LIGHTHOUSE PROJECT - Concept & Architectural Drawings

The footprint of the villa is staggered to provide 2 open spaces - one open space in the front and one at the rear of the plot which is more private as opposed to one large open space at the rear or front of the plot.

The plots are mirrored to create larger open spaces

The central axis of the villa is kept free as a circulation space and also serves as a passage for winds ensuring continuous cross ventilation , which is necessary for the hot and humid climate of Guhaghar .

STONELEIGH PARK - Watchman’s Cabin and Entrance Gate Detail Design and detailing of a Watchman's Cabin, for Stoneleigh Park , a weekend home project at Ajnuj on the outskirts of Pune. The structure was designed with a corner window , facing the road so as to ensure maximum visibility of the oncoming vehicles.

A simple facade of WPC Cladding is provided to the structure, keeping in sync with the overall theme of the project. Also, the stricture has been designed with a sloping roof, to ensure uniformity with the other structures of the project.

STONELEIGH PARK - Bungalow Options Instead of a block shaped house, the villas are designed in an L-shape, so that a larger open space can be formed in the front.

The plots are mirrored so that the private open spaces of each villa are next to each other.

This helps to create larger green open spaces in the master planning of the site.

Since the project consists of 3 types of villas 400sq.ft, 600sq.ft and 800sq.ft, they are designed in a modular way for a sense of uniformity throughout the project.

A part of the house is kept flexible - which can be used by the client as per requitement. It can be used as an open courtyard, can be converted into a second bedroom or a study or it can be used to accommodate a staircase to access the first floor in case of the larger villas.

Retrofitting of old and unused shipping containers for modern housing.

The modules is envisioned to be used as a weekend retreat .

It is designed with a Central open Living Space with an open plan Kitchen and Dining area. There are no walls lining his area, instead there are only sliding windows so that the whole space can be opened up to nature.

Two separate containers at either end are used as the Bedrooms, complete with Toilets.

FINAL YEAR - THESIS PROJECT URBAN CONSERVATION Urban conservation is an important part of modern heritage policies. For at least half a century, historic cities have acquired an incomparable status in modern culture and in modern life; a status defined by the quality of the architectural and physical environment, by the persistence of the sense of place, and by the concentration of the historic and artistic testimonies and events that form the basis for the identity of a people. Last but not least, they have become the icons of global cultural tourism and coveted places for the enjoyment of a different lifestyle and for cultural experiences for millions of people.

The history of Pune begins in the 6th century, and is closely linked to the history of Shivaji Maharaj, and to the Peshwas, the ministers of the Maratha empire .

Since the 1950s and 1960s, Pune is also known for its manufacturing and automobiles industries, as well as for research institutes of information technology(IT), education, management and training, which attract migrants, students, and professionals from India.

TIMELINE OF PUNE’S HISTORY

Rapid urbanization as witnessed in the recent times in India has accelerated the pace of change in all aspects of life, particularly in the urban environments. A majority of the Indian cities and towns are exposed to strong extraneous and fast growing agents of change that disturb the delicate balance that exists between the physical, social, cultural and ecological aspects of the urban settlements.

Delhi, apart from being a prominent cosmopolitan city has also been witness to an eventful and prolific history. Evidence of this is exists in the numerous historical buildings present today in the architectural ruins that dot Delhi’s urbanscape. Many efforts have been made already to record and conserve this extraordinary legacy.

Similarly, most Indian cities have grown from an organic core, which is almost always distinct and identifiable, though not necessarily walled.

The historic core usually consists of a hierarchy of public spaces, mixed land uses and economic activities and a vibrant social and The historic walled city of Jaipur has been an international tourist cultural life. Some of these destination which has increasingly put pressure for the conservation sustenance of this historic fabric. In keeping with the huge characteristics have faded and potential for tourism in the state, the government of Rajasthan has adopted a tourism policy with its focus on heritage and preservation. with time.

The traditional residence in Maharashtra was called the Wada.

It was typically a large building of two or more storey with groups of rooms arranged around open courtyards.

The courtyard plan of the Wadas shielded the living spaces from the outside, no windows were built at the street level.

The houses were inward looking with the upper floors bearing large and graceful windows with cusped arches, typical suru or cypress columns, with carved wooden ceilings and brackets.

The meandering and narrow lanes between the wadas were shaded by the closely packed houses and formed wind channels for any passing breezes , so they were always cool, even at mid-day.

1600 1700 1764 1820 1950 1960-

PETHS IN PUNE were a demarcated neighbourhood where land is allotted on conditional settlement. These were walakable, decentralized areas which advocated mixed use and neighbourhood planning.

The peths grew organically, in spite of being officially 'established' by an individual at a government initiative.

The delicate balance of kinship and community networks, the creation of community spaces and the growth of an urbane culture developed of their own volition.

The shrines and the paars, little cul-de-scas, sudden widening of tortuous lanes, trees, orchards, gardens and above all, the inner courtyards and outer angans created an integrated and spontaneous townscape.

The small houses in this peth had angans or yards in the back and front.

There was a flurry of building activity throughout the second half of the century. The peshwas spent on improving civic amenities. A number of government wadas were built in the various peths, shaniwarwada was renovated and buildings and embellishments were added to it.

A monumental style of architecture never evolved in Pune, even in its heyday. There were no awe- inspiring vistas of urban landscape, nor wide processional ways, or grand planning gestures in 18th century Pune. The only really important structure, which has become a symbol of the city, is the Shaniwar Wada, the fortress-palace of the ruling house. Nevertheless the abiding image of Pune even today is that of a city of peths. Like other traditional towns Pune grew as each peth or ward was added to the original Kasba. But because of the particular way in which the peths were organized, the town presented a unified fabric in spite of many basic differences in the occupation of the various peths.

DEVELOPMENT IN PUNE AFTER THE PESHWAS After the dethroning of the Peshwas and the takeover of the city by the British, the entire focus of the city moved away from the Kasba and the other peths towards the West.

The Britishers saw the Peths as overcrowded and lacking basic hygiene and services. They set up their cantonments in the Eastern parts of the city.

Apart from setting up a prominent cantonment area for their army, the British also set up a number of educational institutions which are still functioning today. The British rule in Pune also saw the development of Bungalow style housing coming up in Pune.

POST INDEPENDENCE DEVELOPMENT IN PUNE The decision to restrict industrial growth in Mumbai in the 1960s, along with the setting up of the MIDC , pushed Pune towards industrialization, as the spillover units were attached to the city. The establishment of the public sector Hindustan Antibiotics and Kirloskar Oil Engines , kick started the industrialization of the city with various other MNCs joining them, that put Pune on the industrial map of the country.

These industries came up in an axial or linear development along the Bombay-Pune road & railway corridor. The big industries have inevitably spawned the ancillaries.

HERITAGE STRUCTURES OF PUNE

RASTE WADA Raste Wada was built between 1779 and 1784 by Anandrao Bhikaji Raste, the Peshwa cavalry's commander-in-chief and founder of Rasta Peth. The five-storeyed Raste Wada, surrounded by a high thick wall, has two quadrangular open spaces and several halls and rooms. The main entrance is marked by an austere yet imposing gateway with massive woodwork, upholding a two-storeyed structure. Adjacent to the main building used to be a kothi (granary) with plain thick walls. The Wada sports several reminders of its past glory in varying degrees of preservation, including fountains, chandeliers, intricate woodwork, fretwork and latticework. It has two gateways, a watchtower, a couple of wells and as many cisterns.

SHANIWARWADA It is an 18th-century fortification in the city of Pune in Maharashtra, India.

Built in 1746, it was the seat of the Peshwa rulers of the Maratha Empire until 1818, when the Peshwas lost control to the East India Company after the Third. Following the rise of the Maratha Empire, the palace became the center of Indian politics in the 18th century.

The fort itself was largely destroyed in 1828 by an unexplained fire, but the surviving structures are now maintained as a tourist site. After the fire in 1828, the Wada was completely ignored by them, and subsequently fell into its ruinous state. It currently only consists of the outer fortification , and the foundations and plinths of the earlier structures.

Currently the Shaniwar Wada is still in a state of decay, with overgrown vegetation inside. The grounds outside the Shaniwar Wada have been redesigned recently, to make an amphitheatre like arrangement that is used by the public for recreation. It is also used to hold many cultural programs on major festivals like Diwali .

VISHRAMBAUG WADA Built by Peshwa Baji Rao II in 1811, Vishrambaug Wada was used as the Peshwa's residence. Peshwa Baji Rao II wanted to move here instead of staying in Shaniwar wada and he lived here till he was ultimately arrested by the British.

The entire palace is made of bricks and still retains much of its old-word charm. The wada presently houses a post office in the ground floor, municipal offices and an exhibition titled 'Punawadi to Punyanagari' displaying the transition of Pune over the years.

Today, the Wada presents a picture most unbecoming of a designated heritage building din and rush straight out of a public park.

Alterations that do not match the original structure and signage slapped on to the main building by the cooperative.

An unkempt and littered entrance passage, further sullied by the sight of the Wada's wall damaged by water seeping out of the school toilets located inside, grass growing on the building walls, and many other telling signs of decay.

The carved woodwork of the balcony, its massive wooden pillars, and brown, white and terracotta façade is an amazing sight. Each pillar is carved from the trunk of a single teak tree. The wada has a large dancing hall with ornately carved ceiling and chandeliers on its first floor. Over the years the old core of kasba and the earlier wards like somwar peth acquired a distinct look of typical urban blight. The graceful wadas could no longer be maintained by their owners. The timber frames were attacked by woodworm and the plaster on the brick walls peeled away, leaving large parts of the facades open to the ravaged of rain.

AS YOUNGER MEMBERS MOVED OUT OF THE OLD CITY WITH THEIR NUCLEAR FAMILIES IN THE SEARCH FOR A DIFFERENT QUALITY OF LIFE IN THE SUBURBS, THE SOCIAL BASE OF THE WADA LIFE BROKE DOWN. THE SLEEPY, LAID BACK PENSIONER'S PARADISE , THE CYCLIST'S TOWN, NOW SEEMS JUST A DREAM FROM THE PAST.

In the mid-1900s, the stables of the Rastes' cavalry retinue along the complex enclosure were replaced by residential cloisters, which have since housed several generations of scores of tenant families. Their involvement in the precinct has not outgrown the measly monthly rents they have been paying for ages. The foreground has been reduced to a thoroughfare.



These residents, still do not have no ownership of the land.

Their cloisters stand right in front of the main entrance to the wada, and have vehicles parked haphazardly in front of them, which are an eyesore.



There are a number of illegal shops on abutting the road, which are built temporarily and are an eyesore as they block the elevation of the Wada as seen from the road.

THIS CULTURAL CENTRE WILL ALSO BE INCOME GENERATING FOR THE OWNERS OF THE WADA, WHICH WILL HELP THEM IN THE MAINTENANCE OF THE STRUCTURE. -RE-ORGANSING THE SHOPS ABUTTING THE MAIN ROAD IN A MORE METHODICAL WAY THAT IS SUITABLE TO THE HERITAGE VALUE OF THE WADA AND IN A WAY THAT IMPROVES THE AESTHETIC OF THE PRECINCT

THE MAIN PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED BY THE WADA IS THAT IT IS NOT VISIBLE TO THE PUBLICIT IS MASKED BENEATH LAYERS OF HAPHAZARD AND INSENSITIVE DEVELOPMENT.

DESIGN CONCEPTS - ZONING : THE PROPOSED PROGRAM HAS A VARIETY OF FUNCTIONS WHICH WILL SEE A VARIETY OF USERS COMING TO THIS PRECINCT. KEEPING THAT IN MIND, THE SITE HAS BEEN ZONED IN THE FOLLOWING MANNER :

THE EXISTING SHOPS HAVE BEEN REORGANISED ON BOTH THE MAIN ROADS , WITH SPACE FOR ADDITIONAL SHOPS AS WELL. THEY HAVE BEEN ARRANGED WITH A COMMON COURTYARD, REFLECTING THE COURTYARD PLAN OF THE WADA AND ALSO TO CREATE A MORE INTERACTIVE SPACE THAT WILL MAKE THE SHOPPING AREA LIKE A HAAT MORE THAN A SIMPLE SHOPPING ARCADE. THE HEIGHT OF THE STRUCTURE HAS BEEN LIMITED TO SINGLE STOREYS SO AS TO NOT OVERPOWER THE WADA BEHIND THEM.

A POCKET OF OPEN SPACE HAS BEEN CREATED IN FRONT OF THE SOUTH FACADE OF THE WADA, THAT WILL ENSURE BETTER VISIILITY OF THE WADA FROM THE ROAD. THIS OPEN POCKET WILL ACT AS A PUBLIC PLAZA FOR THE RESIDENTS OF THE AREA SURRONDING THE PRECINCT

THERE ARE 64 EXISTING APARTMENTS ON THE SITE , EACH HAVING AREAS IN THE RANGE OF 35-50 SQ.M. THESE RESIDENTS HAVE BEEN REHABILITATED INTO MODERN APARTMENTS OF AREA 75 SQ.M , ARRANGED INTO TWO BUILDINGS OF 44 APARTMENTS EACH. EACH BUILDING IS 11 STOREYES HIGH.

THE EXISTING TENANTS IN THE PRECINCT RESIDE IN HOUSES OF AREAS OF 10-15 SQM. THESE TENANTS, 48 IN NUMBER HAVE BEEN REHABILITATED INTO HOUSES OF 25 SQ.M EACH, ARRANGED IN ONE BUILDING THAT ID 6 STOREYES TALL

THUS THE NEW BUILDINGS HAVE ALL BEEN PLACED IN THE PRECINCT SO AS TO GIVE THE WADA MAXIMUM EXPOSURE TO THE PEOPLE PASSING THROUGH THIS AREA. THE MAIN AIM OF REDEVELOPING THE AREA IN THIS WAY IS TO INCREASE THE ASSOCIATIONAL VALUE OF THE WADA AND MAKE IT MORE PROMINENT IN THE SKYLINE OF THE CITY. ALSO, THE PRESENCE OF THE CULTURAL CENTRE INTENDS TO IMPROVE PUBLIC AWARENESS TOWARDS THE WADA THROUGH THE CULTURAL AND OTHER PROGRAMS THAT WILL BE HELD HERE. THE CULTURAL CENTRE PLAYS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ROLES IN REFORMING HE PRECINCT OF THE RASTE WADA. THE MAIN FACADE OF THE WADA IS OPENED UP TO THE PUBLIC B REMOVING ALL THE SQUATTER SETTLEMENTS BORDERING THE ROAD. IT IS PLACED AT THE NORTHERN END OF HE SITE, SO THAT VISITORS COMING TO THE CENTRE PASS THE WADA, THEREBY INCREASING HE IMPORTANCE OF THE WADA IN THE PRECINCT.

CONCLUSION THE NEED FOR THE COMMUNITY TO BECOME ACTIVE STAKEHOLDERS IN A RESTORATION PROJECT SECURES ITS FUTURE MANAGEMENT. NO PROJECT IS SUSTAINABLE IF THERE IS NOT AN INBUILT SENSE OF PRIDE AND POSSESSION WHICH WILL ENSURE PRESERVATION FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS. The public area opens out to a large open landscape that provides views of the river.

The brief involved design of a Weekend Retreat at Boisar , the site being situated on the banks of the Surya River. The Retreat consists of 2 parts - a public part including Dining areas, OfďŹ ces, Conference Rooms, Multi Purpose Hall and a Library; the second part consists of the villas . Stone has been used as the primary material for construction , used in conjunction with glass to give a modern feel to it.

All the structures are designed independently, with lots of open space around them to facilitate ventilation.

The villas are designed with a mezzanine area above for the bedroom which opens out to a terrace, to add an element of novelty. This also keeps more area open on the site. The villas are placed in units of 4, with a common open space between them.

NASA LANDSCAPE TROPHY Indian cities have a rich tradition of public spaces. The competition required the documentation of any one of the public spaces in the Indian landscapes which have withstood the changing times and propose design ideas of a similar size and place in the present context of new cities.

The site is a major junction which links Mumbai cit to is suburbs and also lies between 2 important water bodies of Mumbai - the Mahim Ba and he Mithi river, forming he Mahim creek.

It is one of the original ‘Kolis’ or fishermen of Mumbai. Dense mangroves line the creek, which are the green lungs of the cit.

As the community housing is unplanned, the use the creek and sea-shore as open and recreational spaces , which are not maintained and lack basic amenities such as public toilets.

Also, the are severely polluted with the toxic waste from nearby industries and human waste from slums along its banks.

AMPHITHEATER Focal Point 2: Exhibition Pavilion from where you can see the Creek Bridge, Sea Link and the contemplation space formed on the tip of Mahim beach.

TRANSIT ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT- 4th yr B.Arch

The aim is to achieve the highest possible percentage of mixed use development around the station through redevelopment and urban infill while accommodating the current population. Well designed connections for walking and bicycling to and from the monorail station need to be provided.

TRANSIT-ORIENTED DEVELOPMENT, or TOD, is an approach to development that focuses land uses around a transit station or within a transit corridor.

The site for the project was Wadala, in south-central Mumbai, a suburb that is predicted to see enormous development in

The Baretto Road is a major road that connects the interior residential areas of Wadala with the Monorail & Railway Stations. This important road can be used to connect the inner residential areas by cycle tracks , improving connectivity and reducing the number of vehicles on the road.

The space beneath the Monorail track is currently used for illegal parking of cars by the residents of the area.

Instead this space beneath the track can be used as a cycle track and as a space for parking cycles .

the coming years since it is already on the suburban railway route and will soon have two new metro stops.

The suburb of Wadala presents a picture typical of an other suburb of Mumbai  haphazard development marked by scattered residential areas,  presence of a large area of slums and squatter settlements,  footpaths encroached on by hawkers,  narrow roads and large roads whose carriage way has been reduced by illegal parking along its edges.

The arrival of he monorail, metro and other modes of advance MRTS in Mumbai marks a new phase of development , however it is essential that these new developments be brought forth only afer addressing the glaring problems of the current systems. This should be done to ensure the optimisation of the new methods that are being used to urbanise and modernise the city.

The major change needed in this area is the redevelopment of the slums at the centre of the site. These slums occupy a large area in the centre of the site.

The proposal is to convert this area into a high density residential area which rehabilitates the existing residents and also makes space for more residents.

New roads are proposed in this area, improving connectivity to the major roads. A public plaza is proposed at the intersection of these road, along with a small commercial area.

Grocery stores that line the Baretto road have extended their shops onto the footpath, reducing the useable space for pedestrians. Apart from this, vegetable sellers and other hawkers have also occupied the footpath, making It inconvenient for pedestrians to use the footpath.

Baretto road is a major road connecting the interior residential areas to the current railway station and upcoming monorail stations, which makes it crucial to address this issue .

A recently constructed residential building looms dangerously close to the upcoming monorail station, posing a great risk of privacy o the residents of the tower as well as obstructing the smooth flow of traffic in the area.

The Kidwai marg is the most important road situated on the periphery of the site. This road is a major connector between the industrial area and docks of Sewree and the northern suburbs of Mumbai, hence sees a continuous heavy flow of traffic.

Illegal parking on either side of the road and the footpath has greatly reduced the efficiency of the road so the proposal is to formalise the footpath and use it as a promenade, giving prominence to the shops that are already present on the buildings bordering the road.

Recently Redeveloped buildings in the area show the terrible sense of planning prevalent in he city - the buildings are stacked very close to each other giving no sense of privacy to the inhabitants and also limiting the light and ventilation to the units.

Proposed Land Use Plan Existing Land Use Plan Encroachment and squatters on the pavements of a very busy road pose a serious threat to the pedestrians who are forced to walk on the street due to the lack of a footpath. this road faces a bus depot and links the inner residential area to Kidwai road as well as the Wadala station, because of which It is a very busy road with a continuos traffic movement.

Illegal parking along he Kidwai Marg has greatly reduced the carriage-way of the road. Since this is a major road connecting Wadala to the rest of Mumbai, this road sees a lot of thoroughfare throughout the day of private vehicles, taxis, buses and trucks at all times of the day.
