VISUAL ARTS TRAIL: Follow the visual art trail throughout the City in restaurants, pop up shops, pubs, hotels and other venues. Go out and enjoy all that Kilkenny and it’s people have to offer.

PROUDLY SPONSORED BY

ALTERNATIVE KILKENNY ARTS (AKA) is a collaboration of people living in Kilkenny who have an interest in or practice within the arts around the City and County. ALTERNATIVE KILKENNY ARTS FRINGE FESTIVAL provides a great opportunity for many not involved in the main programme to exhibit, perform, recite and activate their work around the City during the Festival. There has from time to time been a tradition of an informal fringe programme to compliment the main festival. But it has been inconsistent. AKA is endeavouring to bring together these strands under a single programme to promote a diverse range of artistic and creative talent, offer a platform and to raise awareness to patrons of the festival that all of this is going on in our City; all of the time! In the limited time and within the limited resources we had to put this together, we regret that much of the visual arts strand and many other events are not listed here. It would simply be impossible to cover it all. It is our hope that in exploring our lovely little City that you will wander in to many of the wonderful exhibitions that cram every available wall space in the City and even on our Mayor’s Walk. We are most grateful to all who have given of their time, shared their skills and donated hard cash to bring this programme together. A big thanks to Karol Ryan for his graphic design work and to all the artists, musicians, creators, practitioners and misfits who make Kilkenny such a unique melting pot of creativity. Most of all we hope that you will go out and shop local and buy and support Alternative Kilkenny Arts! Enjoy the Festival! There is no committee as such, but these people helped putting stuff together for what we hope will be the first of many AKA’S. It’s open to everyone and very inclusive so get involved! Willie Meighan, Malcolm Noonan, Karol Ryan, Nicci St George Smith, Arthur Drohan, Niamh Moroney, Cathal McFarlane, Ciaran O Neill, Johnny Keenan, Ann Mulrooney, Mary Butler, Dermot Agnew...

Mick took up accordion at the age of nine and has since become one of the leading exponents on that instrument in Ireland. “With irresistible panache, Clive Barnes has produced a benchmark for songwriters. Visual, literary and musical responses through recitals of a selection of the poetry of W.B. Yeats, short original pieces on Yeats’s life and work.

A young man is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown, and must make sure his high-school-age parents unite in order to save his own existence.

Whether Guy Davis is appearing on “Late Night With Conan O’Brien” or in a more intimate venue such as Ryans, Guy feels the instinctive desire to give each listener his ‘all’.

Good For The Soul’ is not just the title of their forthcoming album, it’s the best way to describe these midland mavericks. Tae Lane are burnin’ peat like a loco outa control. Offaly by birth, it seems they could have lived a past life on the Mississippi Delta in the way they are completely immersed in Southern Soul.

Liam O Maonlaí was born in Dublin. His mother from Galway, his father from Cork. His mother showed him what it means to play piano and his father taught him to sing and transmitted to him a grounding in culture and a love of people. His twenties brought him to the world stage with the rock ‘n’ roll band the Hothouse Flowers, with whom he enjoyed seven years recording and performing around the world. Through his travels he has connected with artists from the aboriginal cultures of the land. ‘The possibilities in music are endless. It is time to dig deep’.

KIERAN STREET SUMMER FESTIVAL 2015

Tim V Smyth has been a busy man recently. As a member of Hidden Highways he helped to produce one of the best Irish albums of recent years, being both critically acclaimed and well loved among music fans. Following on from another stunning appearance at Kilkenny Roots Festival,he returns for this coheadliner with Malojian. Armed only with his father’s battered acoustic guitar and a collection of Neil Young LPs, Stevie Scullion began writing songs in his early teens. Struggling to overcome a fear of singing in front of other people, he spent the next few years making lo-fi home recordings on a 4-track tape machine, before eventually finding his voice with acclaimed indie-folk act Cat Malojian.

The Kieran Street Summer Festival 2015 will take place on the 15th August - the day long street party will feature all kinds of events for the young and the young at heart. Everything from face painting to fashion from stories to song, theres something for everyone. Combined with the best food and drink the many restaurants and cafes Keiran Street has to offer it will be a day for the whole family to enjoy! Contact Kytelers Inn for details #KSSF15
