AKA Hybrid Propulsion

Redefining Marine Power and Propulsion standards

Ahead of the Current

AKA Hybrid Propulsion System

The AKA Hybrid Propulsion System is an innovative solution that seamlessly integrates diesel and electric power on the same shaft line, delivering unparalleled efficiency and environmental benefits. Our proprietary Hybrid Propulsion technology is engineered for a variety of marine applications, offering a flexible and reliable power solution for vessel operators worldwide.

Engines operate near peak efficiency, resulting in lower fuel usage and cleaner combustion.

Improved Fuel Economy

Propulsion load sharing eliminates unnecessary idling, enhancing overall fuel efficiency.

Lower Maintenance Costs

Minimal engine use extends the time between overhauls and oil/filter changes.

Healthier Workplace

Reduced engine running cuts engine room noise, creating a more comfortable and quieter work environment.

Holistic Design Approach

AKA’s Hybrid design team adopts a holistic approach, understanding owner-operator goals and vessel duty cycles. Duty cycle analysis ensures machinery configurations are optimized for the vessel’s operational profile, especially during low-load operations where specific fuel consumption performance is crucial. AKA is manufacturer-independent, working with industry leaders

Advantages Over Conventional Systems

In comparison to conventional diesel-electric systems, the Hybrid offers a reduced system size and weight, lower capital cost, greater overall efficiency, and a higher level of safety and reliability. Our unique load-sharing technology allows for highly efficient configurations with fewer installed machinery components.

Why the AKA Hybrid System?

Tailored for Marine Industry Needs

As the maritime industry strives for efficiency and emissions reduction, the AKA Hybrid Propulsion System stands out. The Hybrid technology excels in scenarios where power demands vary widely, making it ideal for ship assist operations and vessels with fluctuating power requirements. Whether for new constructions or retrofits, our system contributes to a healthier workplace for crews.

Verified Performance

A study by the California Air Resource Board compared a conventional tug to one equipped with the AKA’s Hybrid Power system. The results demonstrated impressive reductions in PM2.5, NOx, and CO2 emissions, along with substantial fuel savings. From the study: “The reductions in overall PM2.5, NOx, and CO2 emissions for the hybrid tug compared to the conventional tug were found to be 73%, 51%, and 27%, respectively.

Key Features 02

Efficient Power on Demand

AKA’s Hybrid system utilizes a motor generator and a diesel engine to drive the shaft independently or simultaneously. This unique arrangement adapts to power requirements, ensuring optimal efficiency at every operational stage.

Zero Emissions Mode

For standing-by or low-power operations, the system seamlessly transitions to electrical energy storage, allowing vessels to operate in a zeroemissions mode with no running machinery.

Performance at High Power

At high power, the diesel and shaft motor can collaborate to provide propulsion, augmenting power and enhancing responsiveness with superior low-end torque characteristics.
