President FROM OUR

On behalf of the 320 professional and sophisticated women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Beta Iota Omega chapter, it is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to our 59th Spring Cotillion. The theme of this years’ cotillion, “PEARLfection: Elevating to Excellence,” exemplifies the months of preparation the Cotillionettes have placed into enhancing their self-awareness, scholastic achievement, and service in their community. Our goal for this Cotillion season was to elevate these young ladies above the challenges they have had to face during the last couple of years with our current social climate.

The 59th Beta Iota Omega Cotillion reflects the values and initiatives of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® International theme, “Exemplifying Excellence through Sustainable Service.” Since September 2021, our Cotillionettes have been exposed to various segments of this theme though our five program targets, HBCU4Life and #CAP, Women’s Health and Wellness, Economic Legacy, The Arts!, and Global Impact. Our sixteen Cotillionettes have participated in different activities composed within these international targets through informative workshops, bonding sessions, community service projects, as well as choreography and music rehearsals. It is our sincere desire Cotillionettes, that these experiences have provided the Cotillionettes with opportunities for growth and development. We hope you will always treasure the friendships and relationships you have experienced during your tenure as a Cotillionette. May you continue to mature and grow through future opportunities that will be extended to you as you enter your collegiate journey.

Parents, escorts, family, friends and patrons, the membership of the Beta Iota Omega chapter is appreciative of your dedication, loyalty and commitment to our Cotillion program. Your support over the last eight months will be embedded in the hearts of our sixteen Cotillionettes for years to come. It is our sincere hope that you feel a sense of great satisfaction in knowing that your generous support will touch the lives of the Cotillionettes in a meaningful way.

My sincere gratitude is expressed to our four Cotillion Chairmen, Mrs. Iris Austin, Dr. Raleta Summers Dawkins, Mrs. Valarie P. Welcome

This year we continue in a season of unprecedented times. A year where we all have had to pivot and adjust to a “new normal”. Our 59th Cotillion, PEARLfection: Elevating to Excellence, is no exception.

However, our sixteen lovely young ladies endured our virtual journey with excellence. During this time together, we found them to be funny, smart, courageous and ready to take on the world!

Their journey leading up to this special Cotillion evening was filled with virtual educational workshops, community service and bonding activities. The Cotillion has provided our Cotillionettes with many learning experiences and new friendships. We hope these friendships will continue to blossom as they transition to their next exciting life chapters. Additionally, reading the Cotillion speaker’s (Tabitha Brown) book, “Feeding the Soul” gave them an opportunity to openly express their thoughts and reflections of her shared life lessons. Her lessons were rooted in nonjudgmental kindness and love.

This cotillion experience would not have been possible without the love and support from their parents, family members, friends and chapter members. It definitely takes a village. The Cotillionettes thank you for always being there to help guide their determined footsteps while overcoming obstacles and accomplishing accolades. Their village will forever be remembered.

Anchor Tracey McCain wakes you up every weekday morning from 4:30 to 7:00 a.m. on WFMY News 2’s The Good Morning Show.

Tracey brings her warm smile and 20 years of news journalism to WFMY News 2, but the job’s biggest thrill is the location. Tracey is incredibly happy to be home in North Carolina, broadcasting news in the community where she grew up.

The University of Connecticut graduate got her start at WSHM in Springfield, MA, and then later at WFSB in Hartford, CT. While in the Northeast, Tracey covered mostly crime and politics. Her reports helped shed light on several political scandals and crime rings. Her effort and skill led to several regional award nominations in journalism.

While Tracey’s career was certainly in bloom up North, her home was calling and she jumped at the chance to report at the station she grew up watching: WFMY. Tracey keeps busy volunteering for several Triad organizations and serves as a motivational speaker and role model for young people in the community.

Tracey is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. Tracey has been twice nominated for Emmy Awards for her involvement in the community service program Read 2 Succeed. In January 2015, her hard work paid off when she won an Emmy.

Tracey was voted one of the Triad’s top anchors in the Greensboro News & Record’s 2019 readers-choice awards and was the winner in the publication’s 2021 issue. Tracey was also named in Black Inc. Magazine’s Top 40 under 40 in North Carolina among other recognitions and accolades.

When Tracey’s not at work, she enjoys every minute with her family. Tracey and her husband of seven years have three young children.

Tabitha Brown satisfies the hunger of millions with her unique approach to veganism and her wholesome, comedic personality on the daily. She is a home base for learning new recipes, acquiring imparted wisdom or enjoying a good laugh.

Now a New York Times Bestselling Author of her debut book “Feeding the Soul (Because It’s My Business!)”, the North Carolina born actress vegan lifestyle personality, mother and wife has also taken various business ventures by storm. Alongside making her own healthy haircare line called Donna’s Recipe, being named Equity Partner of Orro, developing a Calm Sleep Story, partnering with McCormick on her signature Sunshine Seasoning, and working on her second book, she has continuously grown her craft as an actress. She has landed notable theatrical features on major network shows such as Will & Grace, The Chi, and the The Conners in addition to co-creating and starring in her own children’s show with YouTube Originals, Tab Time.

Having earned the coined title of “America’s mom” with her 12 million plus followers across platforms, Tabitha teaches all of us about having faith, perseverance, paving our own unique path to achieving dreams and being our authentic selves.

Fifty years ago, Ms. Belinda Bennett Smith was introduced into society in 1972 at our Beta Iota Omega Spring Cotillion. After graduating from North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina, Ms. Smith became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated® Beta Iota Omega Chapter in Greensboro North Carolina in 1982. Ms. Smith has worked diligently and tirelessly in numerous roles with the Cotillion Committee. Ms. Smith has held positions with Beta Iota Omega such as, Ivy Leaf reporter, Graduate & Assistant Graduate advisor, as well as other numerous committees within the chapter.

Ms. Smith retired from the Guilford County Department of Social Services in 2006 after twenty-six years of service. She received the 2002 Marathon Achievement Award, the highest award for Guilford County government. This award is given to employees that show extraordinary work with teens and adolescents in foster care.

Ms. Smith was also a professor at NC A&T State University where she taught in the Sociology/ Social Department for nine years after her retirement. She is a Licensed Clinical Mental Health Counselor and loves helping others.

Ms. Smith has been an active financial member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority for forty years. She gives freely of her time, talents, and treasures. The sorority thanks and commends Ms. Smith for her years of service. We look forward to many more memorable moments for years to come.

The first Beta Iota Omega Cotillion, held in 1961 and subsequent Cotillions, provided pertinent guidance and life skills for each Cotillionettes’ generation.

We are elated to hold the legacy of three generations of Cotillionettes in this year of 2022: Betty Jo-1961, Cheneta-1987, and Emerson-2022.

The bond that is shared between a mother and daughter can be one of the most beautiful connections that exist.

However, a bond that includes a granddaughter is very special also!

It is our prayer that this journey continues to blossom with future generations to follow, resulting in “Pearlfection: Elevating to Excellence”.
