IT’S WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH!

March is National Women's History Month, when we at A Joyful Noise Childcare honor women ' s contributions to American society. Throughout the month, you will notice your children learning about various women and what they have fought so hard for- for our community today, both current and historically. This Year's Women's History Month theme is: "Moving Forward Together: Women Educating & Inspiring Generations"

BLACK HISTORY HERO

This month we are focusing on Shonda Rhimes

We believe it is important for our students to learn about the History of African American people who have made a huge difference in our history

BLACK HISTORY MONTH, was THE BOMB!!!! This year was the 3rd year we dressed as our favorite Black History Hero/ Influencers Our goal was to show our students that they can be any and everything they want to be all they have to do is try In addition, we also cited bios of our Influencers and how they have made a MAJOR impact on society to date. Please make sure you ask your children what they learned and share your comments with us.

As we are cleaning our records up, we are consistently updating out portfolio process, please make sure that if you have moved, changed your phone number or have any updated contact information that you inform us right away An emergency can occur and we will have no access to the child's parent. Please grab a new Child Enrollment form (and Transportation Permission form) to document any changes. This from can be given to you from the front desk!!

Avocado

Avocados are classified as a vegetable in the USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program.

Nutritious and Delicious

Avocados are packed with vitamins, minerals and other nutrients such as dietary fiber, folic acid, potassium, vitamin K and vitamin C.

7 Ways to Try Avocado

Don’t Forget to Record the New Adventures!

It can take multiple tries and different ways for both children and adults to like a new food item. We’ve developed these seven recipes that you can add to your menu where avocado is presented in different ways.

You can use our member resource “ Go On a Taste-Testing Adventure ” to document each child’s experience with trying avocado seven ways.

Classic Guacamole

• 1 lb avocados, seeded and peeled

• 1 garlic clove

• ⅛ cup red onion, finely diced

• ¼ cup plum tomatoes, diced

• Juice from 1 lime

• Salt & pepper to taste

• ⅛ cup cilantro, minced (optional)

In a medium bowl, add avocado and mash with a fork. Then, add all other ingredients. Mix until combined. Makes five servings.

Crediting: ¼ cup provides ¼ cup vegetable

Avocado Mango Salsa

• 1 ½ lb avocados, seeded, peeled and diced

• 2 large ripe mangos, diced

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• ⅛ cup onions, finely diced

• ½ tomato, diced

• 2 limes, juiced

• Salt & pepper to taste

• Cayenne pepper powder (optional)

Add all ingredients in a large bowl except for the cayenne pepper and gently mix. For a spicy kick, sprinkle the cayenne pepper over the salsa before serving. Makes 10 servings.

Crediting: 1/3 cup provides ½ cup vegetable and ⅛ cup fruit

Turkey Avocado Pinwheels

• 6 six-inch whole wheat tortillas

• 12 ( 3/4 oz eq. each) deli turkey slices

• ½ lb avocados, seeded, peeled and mashed

• ¼ lb red bell pepper, seeded and cut into strips

• ¼ lb cucumber, cut into strips

On each tortilla, add two turkey slices. Spread avocado over the turkey. Add ⅛ cup each of bell pepper and cucumber strips. Roll tightly and cut into four slices. Makes six servings.

Crediting: 4 slices provide ¼ cup vegetable, 1½ oz eq. meat/meat alternate and 1 oz eq. grains

Avocado Tomato Toast

• 6 slices whole wheat bread

• 1 ¼ lb avocados, seeded, peeled and mashed

• 1½ cup tomato, diced

Toast the breads and spread ¼ cup of avocado on top of each slice. Top with ¼ cup of tomato. Add another ¼ of fruit or vegetable on the side with milk to make it a complete breakfast.

Crediting: 1 toast provides ½ cup vegetable and 3/4 oz eq. grains

Bean Burger with Avocado

• 1 (15 oz) can of beans (black, navy or pinto), drained and rinsed

• ¼ cup chunky salsa

• ½ cup cooked brown rice

• ¼ tsp salt

• 7 (1 oz eq.) slider buns

• 7 (1 oz) slices of cheese

• 1½ lb avocado, seeded, peeled and sliced

Preheat oven to 350° F. Blend the beans, salsa, rice and salt, pulsing until combined. Scoop ¼ cup of mixture and form into a patty on a greased baking sheet, flattening to about ¼“ thick. Bake for 8-10 minutes, then flip and bake for another 8-10 minutes. Serve on a slider bun with a slice of cheese and ¼ cup sliced avocado. Makes seven servings.

Crediting: 1 burger provides ¼ cup vegetable, 1 3/4 oz eq. meat alternate and 1 oz eq. grains

Avocado Tuna Salad

• 1 (12 oz) can tuna, drained

• 1 cup apple, finely diced

• ½ cup celery, finely diced

• 1¼ cup avocado, mashed

• 1½ tbsp Dijon or whole grain mustard

• ½ tsp cumin

• Salt & pepper to taste

Place tuna in a bowl and use a fork to flake it. Add and mix all remaining ingredients in the bowl until well combined. Makes six servings.

Crediting: 2/3 cup provides 1 3/4 oz eq. meat/meat alternate, ¼ cup vegetable and ⅛ cup fruit

• 3/4 cup milk

Sinh To Bo (Avocado Smoothie)

• 1½ tbsp sweetened condensed milk

• 1 tsp lime juice

• ½ cup avocado, diced

• 1/3 cup ice

Add all liquids into the blender, followed by the avocado and the ice. Blend together until smooth and serve cold. Makes one serving.

Crediting: 1¼ cup provides ½ cup vegetable and 3/4 cup milk

*If serving as a snack, you can credit either the vegetable or the milk. You must serve a second separate component for a snack to be creditable.
