Christmas is the most beautiful and human of all feasts.

God coming to us as a little child.

Coming to tell us how much He loves us.

St. Francis of Assisi had great devotion to the child Jesus.

St. Francis is credited with creating the first crib on Christmas Eve in the year 1233.

May the image of the open arms of Jesus in every crib remind us of God’s welcome to each of us whatever our story in life is.

When we visit the crib, we bring in our hearts our loved ones away from home and our loved ones gone before us.

May the Love Hope and Joy of the birth of Jesus bring Love Hope Joy & healing into our hearts our homes & our community.

Mary we are told “treasured all these things and pondered them in her heart”.

May we enable each other to treasure the story of Christmas so that our hearts may be moved.

May the Light of Christmas come into any darkness we experience in our hearts…homes…community.

I thank you for your on-going support to our community in a variety of ways. I give thanks for the on-going presence of Monsignor and Eamonn and hope that our prayer and presence with you may bring you the strength we all need over Christmas and into the New Year. It is a privilege for us priests to journey with you in faith and in friendship through the ups and downs of everyday life.

Recent Survey on Future Success for the Well Many thanks to all the people and local organisations who took part in the recent surveys funded by Limerick City & County Council and facilitated by Paul O`Raw and Shane O`Sullivan The Community Planning Workshops were well attended, and the information provided showed support for a lot of the necessary developments which are vital for the success of Patrickswell and the community. The draft of the survey is being reviewed and on completion of the review will be presented to Patrickswell Community Council. The results of the survey will strengthen our demand for the funding of much needed facilities and services and we will be relentless in pursuing such funding.

Kilcoyne Family Patrickswell Community Council members wish to offer their support to the Kilcoyne family following the recent attack on their family home and property. The community council condemns the outrageous attack and urge anyone who has any information to come forward and assist the gardai in their enquiries.

Such events are damaging to the good name of Patrickswell, and can result in a reluctance to proceed with future developments and funding of much needed facilities and services.

Patrickswell Active Retirement Association

We are a very active group of senior citizens who meet on a regular basis socially and partake in many different activities.

January | Saw us begin 2019 with art, craft, sewing, bowls & aqua aerobics which continued weekly during the year.

In March | We took part in the life long learning week and had quiz nights hosted by other neighboring organizations.

Our Walking Programme | took place in Mungret every Tuesday during the summer months.

In May | we held a coffee morning and raised €1000 which we

donated

to

the

Adare

Alzheimer’s

Unit.

Other Social Outings | Included trips to Coolwater gardens, Spike Island & Cobh, Birr Castle, boat trip on Shannon, National Museum Dublin, Doneraile House & gardens, Downton Abbey style afternoon tea in Fitzgerald rooms Bruff & many visits to Limetree Theatre for various performances.

Patchwork/Sewing | A number of ladies took part in a weekend of in An Grianan.

Art & Crafts | We also held an exhibition of our in the Resource centre.

We ended our year with our annual Christmas lunch.

We hold group meetings on the last Thursday of each month at which we organize our activities for the month ahead.

We welcome new members and ideas.

Christmas Memories

My memories of Christmas is my Mother taking my sister and myself into Cannocks of Limerick. Being told by my Mum to go down to the end of the counter and pick out what we would like for Christmas in the line of books, toys of our choice, and them to come home to write out the letter to Santa.

One of the many treasured memories I have of Christmas is the 8th December, Mam & Dad would bring us all on the bus to town. First stop Todd’s window, visit to Santa in Roches Stores, treat of the day was sausage & chips in the Golden Grill. Rita Madigan.

At the Graveyard committee meeting on Monday 11th November a new Chairperson was elected. P.J. O’Grady, with Pat Fitzgerald, Treasurer, and Patricia Barry, Secretary, returned upopposed. Councillor’s Daniel McSweeney and Fergus Kilcoyne were in attendance. Patrickswell and Crecora Graveyard Committee are to join Donoughmore | Fedamore CE Scheme, and will have an operative one day a week on a bi-weekly basis to look after the maintenance of the graveyard. Anyone looking for assistance in maintaining their graves please let us know.

Christmas can be a difficult time of year as we are all so busy with Increasing preparations, to do lists and not to mention the calories too. Lack of routine and time can mean our fitness and general well-being gets pushed to the bottom of our priorities. But if we made the decision to take more time out for ourselves, it would make it all less stressful. The problem is we feel it’s all or nothing, so therefore we end up doing nothing and wait for the January madness when we all buy the Gym membership and go on crazy diets. The main thing is to throw away all of the guilt of not doing enough.

There are enough things in life to feel guilty about. From my experience we over think fitness and what we need to be doing. We don’t feel motivated or we feel too tired, but instead we just need some self discipline to get out and do it. It becomes a vicious cycle of chatter in our head. So here’s what you need to know and guess what there is no great secret. Just make the decision that if you don’t have time for the gym or classes that you will get out for a walk for 30 mins. Go as early in the day as you can. Arrange to meet a friend so that makes the commitment more likely to happen.

The benefits of being disciplined to do exercise will positively impact you both mentally and physically. Headspace is what we will all need and getting out in Fresh Air is the best medicine for very one during Christmas. Merry Christmas.

ollowing on from your overwhelming generosity last year, and again at the recent Coffee Morning this year in support of Casa Vida, the orphanage in Peru, and some donations since, I am delighted to tell you that a sum of €1250 was transferred to the support group in Palma Nova, Majorca, and has been acknowledged.

asa Vida means Home Life and is an orphanage and school for boys in Lima. The two boys being sponsored are Alonso, who was twelve on November 27th and Clever who is thirteen on January 6th. Alonso has an older brother at the home and Clever has been blind since birth. The term ‘orphan’ does not necessarily relate to a child whose parents are no longer alive.

Yordan, another of the boys who was living in Casa Vida from the age of eleven, did so well at school last year he was accepted to study Industrial Computer Engineering at university. He is the first of the orphans to go right through secondary school and then on to university whilst living at Casa Vida. “We are very proud of his achievement and congratulate him, together with all

The school closes the week before Christmas and the boys are encouraged to go home to their families if possible, and then back to Casa Vida. January and February are their school summer holiday period, it is mid-summer then and very hot. The boys get taken down to the Pacific Coast where they enjoy their time swimming, playing lots of football and relaxing. Alonso and Clever and all at Casa Vida “wish everyone at the Church of the Blessed Virgin, Patrickswell, a Very Happy Christmas with your families”, and I would like to thank you all once again for your generosity.

What was your favourite Christmas present when you were small? My favourite Christmas present ever was my first set of golf clubs. I got them from Santa when I was 10 years old. I remember they came in a red golf bag and there were golf balls in the pocket. I still love playing golf today.

We Provide Sessional care for Pre-school age children. We provide ECCE places for children in the community from 2 and 10 months to 5 years of age. As we are situated on the grounds of the National School it makes transition from playschool to Big school easier.

New Plans There are great plans to expand in the new year with our after school. To avail of this service please make sure all parents are registered with the national childcare scheme on www.gov.ie.

Finally, Patrickswell National School is the local National School and is one of the heartbeats of the Community of Patrickswell.

We would encourage all parents who have a child/children of school-going age in the parish to visit us and choose Patrickswell N.S. as the primary school their child attends. Now enrolling for September 2020!

We are delighted to announce the formation of a new Board of Management in Patrickswell National School. The term of this Board will be from 2019-2023. We have a good mixture of returning members and fresh faces, which is always a good blend.

atrickswell Cycling club formed in 2015 . The club has steadily grown since its formation and now has over 40 members. Our club is a relaxed and social cycling club with the concept to facilitate every cyclist above the age of 18 together to help Improve fitness, form friendships and most of all have fun. Any person who has a bike it doesn't matter what kind of a bike we cater for everybody.

We wish our members supporters, friends & to all who helped our club throughout the past year.

Mulled Wine Recipe From Russells Catering, Dooradoyle, Limerick.

Ingredients • • •

1 bottle of red wine.

1 orange cut into slices with 2 cloves in each slice.

2 star anise ( Don't add any extra because they are very strong. Too many and and it will have a sambucca taste.

• 2 cinnamon sticks or half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder.

• 3 Tablespoons of either brown sugar or honey.

(Honey would be my own preference) Method Pour wine into a small pot and simmer for about 10 minutes. (Don’t boil the wine, as it will reduce). It is pointless to use an expensive wine, as you make the flavour yourself. Add the other ingredients and leave on a low heat.

Once all the mixture is added, be sure to strain well to avoid swallowing cloves etc. Pour into pre-heated glasses.

You are now ready to toast the festive season.

PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB HURLING NOTES

Memorable Season for the Senior Hurlers

I

t was a memorable season for Patrickswell as we clinched a historic 20th Senior Hurling Championship. The victory allowed the ‘Well to finally overtake Ahane in the “Roll of Honour”.

The Championship group stages started on a positive note as Patrickswell beat rivals Doon and Na Piarsaigh on consecutive weekends in April. After a long break of four months, Ciaran Carey’s men accounted for South Liberties. The fixtures were coming thick and fast, but Patrickswell managed to carve out draws against KIlmallock and Adare to top the group. The semi-final was a tough encounter with Doon; however Patrickswell held its nerve to win by 2-14 to 0-15.

he final was a tactical masterclass against the heavily-favoured Na Piarsaigh. Cian Lynch set the tone with a superb solo point after two minutes. While the Caherdavin men promptly equalised, Aaron Gillane popped up with two frees to match Na Piarsaigh's offering. Patrickswell nudged ahead when Thomas O' Brien and Josh Considine struck points. The key moment of the match was a devastating finish from young Considine, who sent a fierce shot into the net. Na Piarsaigh did respond with two fresh points, but they trailed by 1-5 to 0-5 after 18 minutes. The remainder of the first half was dominated by the 'Well as four straight points built a seven-point margin.

he second half began with a Na Piarsaigh fightback that was combined with a scoring drought from Patrickswell. By the 50th minute, Na Piarsaigh had drawn level with six unanswered points. The scoreboard read 1-9 to 0-12. Thankfully Diarmaid Byrnes ended the slump with a point and Aaron Gillane added another. Na Piarsaigh pulled a point back, but Josh Considine, Aaron Gillane and Cian Lynch opened a four-point lead by the 56th minute. Patrickswell were now in the ascendancy. Na Piarsaigh trimmed the margin to three points; however Cian Lynch and Aaron Gillane increased the buffer to five points.

point, Diarmaid Byrnes closed out the match at 1-17 to 0-15. There were tears and jubilation as Cian Lynch held the trophy aloft.

Junior A Hurlers The Junior A hurlers won silverware in 2019 when the City League was retained. They were pipped in the City Championship final by a committed Claughaun side, while also reaching the County League semi-final and County Championship quarter-final.

GREAT NEWS FOR PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB After many years of hard work, Patrickswell GAA acquired the site adjacent to Pairc Antoin O’Briain. For decades, we have been dependent on a single pitch to meet our needs. While it is great news to have secured a new site, we will require extensive fundraising to realise our ambitions. We can’t survive without the continued generosity of you the local community. Thank you!

Minor Hurlers

The Minor hurlers battled hard in the Premier Championship and earned a Top Four finish in the group stage. Our record of four wins and four draws allowed Patrickswell to scrape a County semi-final berth against parish neighbours Ballybrown.

Unfortunately, Ballybrown proved their “favourites” tag and progressed to the final.

Cian Lynch, Aaron Gillane and Diarmaid Byrnes were part of the Limerick team that won both Munster Championship and National Hurling League medals. Later in the year, Aaron Gillane was awarded a prestigious All-Star. On the Minor stage, Patrick Kirby and John Kirby won the Munster Championship and Patrick was named on the All-Ireland Minor Hurling Team of the Year. Sarah Gillane, Emma Barry and Leah O’Carroll reached Croke Park in the Junior Camogie All-Ireland Final.

The Junior Ladies won a County Shield, while the Under 13 girls claimed a County “C” Championship.

The first Championship won by Patrickswell was the 1949 City Junior Hurling title.

Under 21 Hurlers The Under 21 hurlers easily topped their group and reached a County semi-final with Na Piarsaigh. The Caherdavin men proved too strong on the day.

In 1956 the Patrickswell camogie team won their first Senior County Title.

CHRISTMAS FAIR 2019 The 3rd Annual PCC Christmas Fair took place on Sunday 8th December in The CĂş Chulainn lounge, it was a very well attended event. Huge thanks to all who helped out on the day, to those who sponsored items for the raffles, to those who donated home baking for the cake sale, to the stall holders who booked tables there, and to all who attended and made the event such a success. May the 4th Annual Christmas Fair in December 2020 be as successful.

TO SANTA

for PJ O’Grady

Oh, Santa don`t forget me Just like you did last year, I was really disappointed Crying many a bitter tear.

The children all around me They got lots of lovely toys, The girls all loved their dolls As also did some boys.

—————— But looking out our window It broke my little heart, I would tell you how it hurt But don`t know where to start.

To see the happy children Playing outside without me, Mammy said, “It`s ok dear” But it wasn`t, don`t you see.

—————— I don`t think I was greedy I only asked you for a train, I`d have settled for a doll And I would not complain.

But Santa I got nothing And it isn`t bloody fair, I bet you all the children Got a present in Adare.

—————— Sorry about that Santa I didn`t mean to moan, To leave a child unhappy You`d need a heart of stone.

I am begging of you Santa For it`s something that I fear, You think like Johnny Logan Sure what`s another year.

—————— My daddy said if I`d been bold It could be the reason why, That Santa you were angry And decided to pass me by.

But my mammy said I wasn`t I was an angel without wings, So, Santa just one question What`d you do with all my things.

—————— That`s all I have to say Santa And I hope you get my letter, Last year was disappointing Surely this year will be better.

So Happy Christmas parents And to all the girls and boys, And a word of warning Santa Try not to mix up all the toys.
