Chulainn Memories…….

Our feature item this month is very fitting as it marks what we hope will be the temporary closure of the Cu Chulainn Bar & Lounge. Many of us have great memories of our time spent in the Cu and some had no memory of being there on many an occasion. There were tears when people heard of it`s closure as they began to reminisce of their times spent there and the good times that they had enjoyed. Many met their life partners in the lounge or bar when attending functions, sporting occasions or just there for the music and the craic. There is the material for a book or two to be written about the Cu, the characters and events that took place and hopefully we will get to see that book in the not too distant future.

We wish Christy, Tom, John and all the Murphy family members all the best for the future and thanks for providing us with entertainment, laughter and above all a place to quench that thirst.

A lot of work by members of the Patrickswell Community Council has gone into producing Traditional Irish Crochet Saint Patricks Day badges. These badges are now available from committee members, all the local shops and the Resource House. The badges cost €3 & you can purchase a Card of 12 for €30. See the front page notice regarding these items.

Development Fund Raffle A raffle to generate funds for to train participants in the use of Defibrillators and in support of the Development Fund will take place in Patrickswell Church on Sunday April 19th after 11.30 mass. The first prize is a Travel Voucher to the value of €1000, second prize is €300, and third prize is a Hamper. See the frontpage notice regarding this event.

What Do You Get For €5?

You get a great night`s entertainment in the Resource House on a Thursday night when you join in a game of 45. The card night is mainly intended to be a social event where people can enjoy both the cards and have a laugh and enjoy the banter of which there is no shortage. It also contributes to the much-needed funding of the day to day costs of running the Resource House. You can also enjoy a cup of tea and a bun which is provided at the end of the night. We wish to thank all those who continue to support the event and all those who help in organising the night.

The next Pop Up Shop in aid of Patrickswell Community Council will be held on Friday 15th, Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th of May in John Leddin`s Premises from 11am to 6pm.

Ingredients

Method

1lb Self Raising Flour Teaspoon Baking Powder 8 oz Butter or Margarine 6 oz Sugar 6 oz Currants 2 Large Eggs Milk if Required Pinch of Nutmeg

Blend the Nutmeg with the spiced flour then rub in the butter. Add sugar & currants & bind with the eggs & milk to form a stiff paste. Roll out to ¼ inch thick & cut into rounds.

Bake on a moderately hot bakestone until suitably brown on each side.

Sprinkle with sugar.

Best eaten when warm.

Patrickswell Active Retirement Association

Christmas has passed and we are into our new year of activities. We are a very active group of senior citizens who meet on a regular basis socially and partake in many different activities.

Craft Classes | We still continue on Mondays with many new exciting items produced eg hats, tea cozies, sock dolls and patchwork to name but a few.

Fitness | Four P E students from UL are putting us through our paces in the hope of having us fit and trim for a good Summer that we hope is on the way.

Art | Wednesday is our art day and we are in the process of a Level 3 FET course, and craft art on Fridays.

And More… | Added to all this we have bowls, walking, line dancing.

Our Next Outing | We are off to Westport for an action packed 3 days.

END OF AN ERA It was with deep disappointment and regret recently that the community of Patrickswell learned of the Closure of the famous Cu Chulainn Bar in the village. These premises have been in the ownership of the Murphy family since 1969. One of the first events to be held under the new ownership was the celebration of the County u21 hurling championship. Christy tells the story that he celebrated the winning of the Championship Twice within a few weeks as the Clubs opponents in that final were Christy’s home club Garryspillane. They objected to Patrickswell and were awarded the title a few weeks after.

The reasons for the objection have been well documented.

Murphy Family The Murphy family have made a major contribution to the community. They were a very sporting family and were very supportive of all organisations within the parish. Most fundraising events and celebrations were held in the Cu as it was known. During their time here they have celebrated 18 County Senior Hurling Championships, 2 Munster Club and 2 All Ireland Senior titles 1973 and 2018.

Greyhounds In 2010 he was the Nominator of the winner of the Irish Cup and he also served as an officer of the Coursing Club. Tom also had great interest in all sport and especially the Greyhounds. It is great to see that the Murphy influence will continue with the GAA as John is Chairman of the Juvenile Club and is also team manager of the Minor team.

They will be sadly missed in the village and we would like to wish them every happiness and health in their retirement and we would hope that The Cu will continue to operate as a Bar in the future.

Memories

Christy the Sportsman Christy was the first Captain of the Patrickswell Golfing Society in 1993 and he was President in 1995 and 96. He was manager of the clubs Junior hurling team in 1999 who went on to make history by winning the County Title as it was the first time that the second team from a senior club succeeded in winning the championship. This victory was celebrated for a few weeks to the delight of Christy. He also managed

Some of the events that were held in the Cu will bring back great memories such as the fundraiser The Mock Wedding, with Julie Darcy as the Bride and the late Jackie Thornton as the Groom which brought the village to a standstill.

The Rock and Roll concert was also one to remember with Christy and Catherine playing major roles. All these events raised great money for local charities.

These events were recorded on DVD and I am sure they are still around.

The Cu also supported all organisations in the Parish in raising funds from Table Quiz’s, Sale of works and Coffee Mornings Many people have great memories

PATRICKSWELL GAA CLUB NOTES

We look forward to our annual Juvenile Club Open Day on Sunday 8th March from 12.00pm to 1.30pm. It will be a fun-filled occasion and our Senior stars will be there with the Daly Cup.

JUVENILE CLUB OPEN DAY

We welcome all new children to the club, including those born in 2014 and 2015 who will form our Under 6 group for this year. Our Under 6s and Under 8s will meet every Friday evening at 6pm. Parents can enjoy a tea or coffee and watch the kids have fun playing games, learning basic skills and developing their Fundamental Movement Skills that will aid their athletic development. It's a fun time for all, so please join up with us. See you on 8th March!!

UNDER 21 HURLERS

T

he Under 21 hurlers were defeated

by Doon in the opening match of the Premier Championship. The East Men raced into a two-point lead before Jason Gillane registered the 'Well's first point of the match. Doon went 0-3 to 0-1 ahead, but Clive Kirby and Jason Gillane equalised by the 11th minute. Doon nudged ahead with two consecutive points, although Calvin Carroll trimmed the deficit with a point. Unfortunately, Patrickswell were knocked off course when Doon struck one goal and two points in a five-minute purple patch. The scoreline was 1-7 to 0-4 on the twenty minute mark. Jason Gillane halted the surge with a point, but our opponents notched three straight points to lead by 1-10 to 0-5. Clive Kirby claimed the last point of the first half.

he second half began with another push by Doon. They scored three more points to lead by ten points at 1-13 to 0-6. Clive Kirby and Jason Gillane (0-2) reverted the arrears to seven points.

However, Doon put the match beyond reach with a salvo of four consecutive points. With ten minutes left, Patrickswell trailed by 1-17 to 0-9. The match ended with a Jason Gillane consolation goal and a final Doon point.

The result was 1-18 to 1-9.

CLUB LIMERICK DRAW The Club Limerick Draw is back for 2020. There are thirty prizes each month, with a first prize jackpot of €10,000 and a variable star prize for fifth place every month.

Medal Awards Medals were awarded to the 2019 Senior Hurling Champions, the 2019 City League Champions and the 2019 Camogie Junior Plate winners. Damien Gillane was named Club Person of the Year for his trojan service to the club, while Seamus O'Riordan scooped a Distinguished Service Award and Marie Foley & Ann O'Doherty took home a Special Merit award. Many thanks to everyone that organised the event.

DEVELOPMENTS AT PAIRC ANTOIN O'BRIAIN In February, the hedge that divided Pairc Antoin O'Briain from Courtney's Field was removed. This project was a major step on the road to developing our playing facilities.

MEMORIES OF

ST.PATRICK’S DAY

Long ago a few days before the big day we cycled to the city to get some harps and badges and green felt in Walsh’s drapery in Wickham street. On our return home we looked for Shamrock in the fields. All that stuff was sent to our friends and relations in England. We were up early St. Patrick’s morning to help our parents. We milked the cows and fed the calves. We had breakfast which included eggs. After that we cycled to mass and then to the parade. We wore badges and shamrock. Our parents went to the local church on a Pony and trap On our return from the city we were served a lovely feed of bacon and cabbage. Corn flour and jelly was the dessert.

After that we helped our parents again with the milking etc. After supper we got out the gramophone and records. We had some lovely Irish music and our neighbours came in and enjoyed themselves. That was our St. Patrick’s Day. Slan libh
