AJAY RAMPERSAUD I am a junior Arichitectural Designer working in the field since Febuary 2019 and a recent architecture graduate from the Daniels School of Architecture at the University of Toronto. I have facilitated and perused a knowledge for architecture and design from a young age.

A Divided Neighborhood - Urban Analysis

I was given a section of Toronto to analyze, specifically the Birchmount and Eglinton intersection of the Ionview neighborhood. Upon visiting the site, I created a series of maps that capture and attempt to understand the unique nature of the neighborhood. Observations lead me to realized that there was a seemly even divide between the residential Ionview neighborhood and the more commercial district of the Golden Mile, separated by Birchmount road. I wanted to understand further how this came to pass. I analyzed the property types that make up the area and conducted a spatial analysis to understand how this neighborhood is being used. I also decided to first conduct a historical analysis to understand how this amazingly precise divide came to be. Lastly, I wanted to understand how the site will change in the future. This neighborhood is at the precipice of major change as the older factors are changing into commercial stores and high-rises, as people’s needs change and as population increases. Construction is a constant for this neighborhood today. Thus, this divided neighborhood might be changing to a more interconnected one.

These permit drawings above where part of a commercial project I done during my time working at Archisystem Inc. The building was located at 321 Algonquin Street, North Bay, Ontario. The building suffered fire damage and was subsequently abandoned for a few years before we were asked to redesign the building. I was sent to survey and measure the site, and to photograph and prepare a fire damage report. At the site I worked with the owner and contractors to come up with the best course of action to repair the fire damage in a timely and cost-effective way. Moreover, I then created drawings using AutoCad that corrected the fire damage and brought the building’s facilities up to the current building code. These permit drawings also contained a redesigned staircase at the side of the building that would act as an entrance to the upper floor.

After I submitted these fire repair permit drawings, I then created a unit finish permit set that would allow for commercial stores on the lower level and apartments for rent on the upper level, as per the client’s desire. Thus, this building serves its community well as an efficient mixed-use building, providing both residences and a storefront, on one of North Bay’s main streets.

These permit drawings above where part of a residential project that Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve completed during my time at Archisystem Inc. The project was located on Danfield Court in Brampton, Ontario. It was a two-stage permit where the first permit, which the architectural drawings for are seen above, allowed for the basement to be finished with bedrooms, a bathroom, a kitchen, living and dining room and a gym. It also included drawings for a below-grade walk-out staircase located at the rear yard that leads into the basement, and the enlargement of one side yard window. The owner desired a well finished, well lit, basement apartment for renting purposes, and for a separated entrance to that apartment for the renters, so that there could be privacy between the two parties. The architectural drawings here correspond to the requirements by the City of Brampton and adhere to the Ontario Building Code Pt 9. The second stage of this permit was a deck permit which connected to the below-grade walk-out staircase and included a canopy the covered the deck. The project serves well as an example of increasing the value of the home and allowed for the to reach it maximum dwelling potential.

These permit drawings above where part of a residential project I have completed during my time at Archisystem Inc. The project was located on Giraffe Ave in Brampton, Ontario. The client wanted to remove a previous below-grade walkout staircase and replace it with an above-grade side door. This entrance would be an alternate route to the basement. The hardest challenge for this project was that an above grade door, which if build at ground level, would have the person entering it be positioned too high as the interior staircase landing is below grade level. Therefore, a new raised landing with steps and railings was needed to allow a person to enter and walk down to the existing landing level. This was difficult as it was a small area to build a landing and stairs which all had a minimum width of 3 feet, and we wanted to main a minimum ceiling height of at least 6 foot 5 inches as per Ontario Building Code. However, I managed to come up with a system that worked for the client and which fitted into the space up to the millimeter. Many trips were needed to measure the site and pictures taken to accurately model the space in AutoCad. However, the challenge allowed to learn that architecture is about problem solving and made me better at measuring and surveying.

Cantilever Ramps - Model Making

For this project, I was asks to design a series of levels only using horizontal surfaces. Using Foamcore and wooden dowels, I decided to create a series of stairs and cantilevered ramps. I wanted to experiment with cantilevered levers as they would be visually interesting, and they would add an emotional, sensory aspect as well. For example, having a longer cantilever would render a more fearful, intense affect as the user walks onto it, rather a shorter one. There is also a distinction between the use of stair and the use of cantilever. Stairs offer a more difficult journey up, a more jagged experience to represent the dense space I created in the center of the site, where the base of the staircases lie. The cantilevers contrast this as they are built around the edges of the site. They offer a more free-motion experience for the user. I wanted to create a dichotomy with the choice of connections. Having cantilevers allows the horizontal levels to forgo the need of the structural columns. Thus, there is an aesthetic connection between the levels and the columns, a perpendicular juxtaposition. The site is a dynamic mix of systems that offer the user different modes of traveling upwards, and across between platforms, with the goal of experiencing different sensations, and to understand the relationship between architecture and emotion.

At the beginning of the term I was given Villa Planchart, a private home located in Caracas, Venezuela. The goal was to first deconstruct the home and understand how it was made and why. Moreover, why was it such a successful piece of architecture. Once I conceptualized its elements I would then redesign the villa allowing it to fit into a Toronto context. Pages 05 + 06 are the first half of the project.

I deconstructed the home into its basic spaces represented in the 3D axometric. I also created a set of elevations, sections and floor plans to aid my understanding of the architecture.

From these construction drawings I learnt the external faรงade walls are supported by the interior structure rather than having exterior walls supporting the house. These curtain walls made the house look like the structure was dematerializing, and gave it the illusion of lightness, freeness, and airiness. The roof is also another defining feature, which seems to be a soft wing placed on top of the structure, however is disconnected from the faรงade walls. Thus, the roof also looks like it is dematerializing, but also gives it the illusion of lightness. This dematerializing of materials is a key element of the villa and is continued on the interior. Most of it is open and free, but specific voids are placed made up of large windows or glass walls to continue this experience of openess, freedon and airness.

The next phase of the Villa Planchart project was to redesign the villa for a Toronto context. The site for the villa was just east of the Bloor West Village neighborhood, just on the edge of High Park. From Villa Planchart I chose elements that I thought represented the houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s key essence, which was its internal courtyards. These spaces allowed nature to enter and become part of the villa. In the warm climate of Venezuela this works well, but in Toronto, with a changing climate this is not entirely ideal. However, I still thought the use of internal courtyards that can be used in the summer as living spaces, but in the winter could offer enhanced lighting and a sense of airiness, lightness and freedom through the house would work. The courtyards could be used as living spaces or in some cases as lightwells. In each case they also act as connections between floors.

Interior Perspective

The design brief stated the house needed to inhabit two individuals. Thus, I divided the house into three sections. The upper left and lower right sections are the personal spaces for the individuals containing their living rooms, kitchens, bathrooms and bedrooms. The middle section is communal space, where services like laundry is contained, but also contain large living spaces. Communal living around central courtyards is the key element for this house. Courtyards derives from Villa Planchart and communal living is something I think should be encouraged in a city like Toronto and in these economic times. The site was steeply sloped so offsetting each of the three sections of the house helped to accommodate this environmental challenge, plus it allowed for better views into High Park.

Before I was able to reconceptualize Villa Planchart for Toronto, I was given a site where it would be placed. Thus, I had to analyze the site to better integrate my redesigned villa within the neighborhood. The location where the house would be placed is marked on the maps with a red dot and is facing High Park. Analyzing tree cover, activity and sound patterns was important to understand as Villa Planchart was defined with large windows, glass walls and courtyards, which helps to create an open, free and airy home as well as helping to connecting the outside nature into the house. Thus, eliminating the noise that comes from being in a busy city like Toronto, but at the same time maximize views into High Park was critical for my redesign of Villa Planchart.

Visual Arts

Painting has been a passion of mine. It allows me to express feelings and emotions that I may not get to do when designing architecture. In this acrylic painting I experimented with different colors and techniques including dry brushing, blocking and spraying. I used a paper canvas, acrylic paints and different dry brushes. I learnt a lot through painting including color theory which can help me in my architecture work.

Drawing has been something Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always done. I often find it easier to draw and sketch an idea than communicating it verbally. I often draw in my architecture work, sketching or drawing construction drawings or preliminary ideas before developing a 3D model.

However, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always found it difficult to draw human figures. Thus, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone with this drawing. It gave me a chance to explore drawing techniques of shading, blending and smudging, and helps to improve my sketching technique.

A Viewing Device for Varsity Stadium - Design

The task of this project was to design a viewing device that would be placed somewhere inside the brick wall that encloses the rear of U of Tâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Varsity stadium and, runs parallel to Bloor Street. The viewing device was to draw people to engage with the wall in the hopes of better connecting Varsity stadium and the people walking along Bloor. The design brief only allotted the use of a roughly 1/2 square meter area of the wall. I began by taking photos and drawing the site. Next, I started to develop a system of windows that were mounted on sliders that could be attracted into the 1/2 square meter hole in the wall. These windows are at different magnifications to created different focal points and frames of view. This would make this device interesting and allows pedestrians to view all parts of the stadium, near and far. I modeled the wall and began organizing my sliding windows into the carved-out space. I also added two light wells, at the top and the right side of the wall, to help illuminate the viewing portal, and can have interesting effects when the light reflects off these windows.

A Viewing Device for Varsity Stadium - Design

As I continued to develop my viewing device I decided to limit the number of sliding windows to just three, each with different magnifications. This makes it more user friendly, but still retains all the functionality of being able to see all the different spaces of the stadium and, is still visually interesting for the viewer and passers-by.
