Why Are CPVC Pipes Best For Potable Water Supply

CPVC pipes are similar to polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipes except with added chlorine in the mix.

CPVC pipes have become the new standard pipe for most residential plumbing applications. But why are CPVC pipes best for your portable water supply?

Resistance to Clogging CPVC pipe resists clogs in a variety of way. The incredibly smooth material allows water to flow through them with minimal effort. That means that CPVC pipes are incredibly quiet. On top of that, minerals in the water have a hard time sticking to the pipe walls, so scaling takes a long time to occur if it can at all. Now you’re less likely to have water pressure drop because the mineral scale acts like cholesterol clogging your arteries until it cuts off flow. Nor will the mineral pieces be subject to turbulence until something breaks off and clogs the pipe.

Resistance to Contamination

CPVC pipe resists chemicals both inside and out. Drinking water with fluoride, chlorine and other chemicals won’t cause particles to leach from the CPVC pipes the way metal pipes would.

The best quality CPVC pipes in India meet NSF standards, the highest standards for drinking water and food products. Nor will the chemicals added to keep drinking water safe eventually eat through the pipes.

It also won’t break down on exposure to acidic soil. If it passes under your garden or lawn, pesticides and fertilizers won’t seep through the soil and into your drinking water. Furthermore, the same CPVC pipes won’t leak wastewater into the surrounding point, including into any nearby drinking water pipes or water sources. This is why CPVC pipe is the default choice when installing hot water drains.

Thermal Resistance CPVC pipe can withstand higher temperatures than PVC pipe. For example, PVC pipe is at risk of deformation if it is connected to your hot water heater. This is why CPVC pipe is used around hot water heaters, and it is often used all the way to the water tap to ensure that the pipe doesn’t deform or leak. Why not use it throughout the rest of the house? Then the pipes need less insulation to maintain water temperature, and the pipes are less likely to freeze in winter.

Leak Resistance CPVC pipes are leak resistant for the same reasons PVC pipes are. They’re made to very strict standards. Whether they screw together or slide together until they stick, they’re then essentially glued to form a water- tight seal. Their durability also means they’re less likely to crack and leak if struck or subject to stress as your foundation shifts. A side benefit of CPVC pipe’s low flow resistance is that you don’t get the water hammers that can shake pipe out of connecting hardware. That will either cause a steady leak or massive flood.
