FIRM PROFILE Andre Johnson Architects is a design focused architecture studio located in Raleigh, North Carolina. The practice is dedicated to the principles of modern design, integrating sustainability, sensibility and innovation into every project.

The firm was established in 2013 by award winning architect, Andre L. Johnson, AIA, NOMA, NCARB after successful leadership tenures in architecture firms in Baltimore, Maryland, Durham, North Carolina and Raleigh, North Carolina. Andre’s leadership has fostered amazing growth for the firm, growing from one person to a studio of nine dedicated professionals. Through client service, commitment to client goals, design excellence and a rigorous project development process, the firm has also diversified its portfolio. Andre Johnson Architects has worked on projects as large as 800,000 square feet valued at over $500,000,000.

Andre has over 23 years of experience in architecture and started his practice based on the basic principles of design excellence, client service, collaboration, diversity, and mentoring. Andre’s background in engineering and architecture gives him a unique perspective in project design and development, with a keen eye for the practical and the conceptual. Andre’s leadership and rigorous design process has helped the firm achieve recognition for design excellence with multiple design awards including 9 design awards from the AIA at the local, state, and regional levels. Andre’s drive for success and client service allows the firm to expand its client base with every successful project delivered. Andre is a board member of Diversify Architecture, a non-profit founded in 2020 to encourage and make meaningful changes in diversifying the architecture profession. PROCESS Andre Johnson Architects has developed a rigorous design process. We elevate every project that we work on from the simple to the sublime. Our projects range in both scale and complexity. We understand how to develop projects with restrictive and flexible budgets. We begin each project with a VISION STRATEGY SESSION that brings all stakeholders together to synthesize the goals, aspirations and objectives for the project. This session helps our team and the client collaborate early in the project development.

PROJECT PROFILE

From this early project session, the design team, including all consultants, start on the exploration of the project’s potentials. We analyze the site and the site features, allowing the site to influence and shape the design of the site and the building. We observe the characteristics of the site, seeking to optimize the solar orientation, prevailing winds and other natural features that will help our team design a sustainable building. Our building systems engineers engage with our design staff to create beautiful buildings that are about the place where they are constructed. We never design a building with a preconceived idea. Our designs evolve from the character of the site, the client and the community where our buildings are developed.

Although we are in an age of computer developed design solutions, we always begin with the “old school” approach of hand sketches and physical models.

These tools compliment our firms leading edge visualization and project imagery that help our team and our clients realize each project to its full potential.

CAPITAL CITY SPORTSPLEX The Capital City Sportsplex is a new proposed sports facility that houses multiple sporting events for both indoor and outdoor events. The design of the facility has its roots in the intersection of the various sports represented in the building. The intersection of the various sports become an organizing move in the design of the building, utilizing the natural challenges of the site and building program to create a building where almost all of the indoor sporting events have access to exterior views and natural light. The concept utilizes a mostly glazed building with a metal screen over the building to assist with reducing solar heat gain and glare. The most unique aspect of the this project is that 60% of the building is below grade, yet all public spaces have access to natural light and views.

COMMUNITY AND URBAN FOOD PROCESSING FACILITY The proposed Community and Urban Food Processing Facility will be an incubator and a draw for the local community and local farmers. Feeding a hungry planet and protecting the environment we all share are challenges that become more important every day. The building conceptual design and programming components all support the university’s charge as an innovative and leading educational facility for tomorrow’s technical and agricultural professional. The proposed conceptual building design and site placement enhances the building’s presence on the farm campus while maintaining a thoughtful connection to the adjacent buildings and surrounding landscape.

MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. STUDENT CENTER The proposed Student Center will be a revitalizer for the central hub of campus. It will house many of the campus activities that will allow students to gather in-between and after classes. The project is the result of an award of a federal grant for improvements to the existing building due to the damage from recent storms. Part of the improvements are to remedy the damage caused by water infiltration. Interior walls, finishes and other items are replaced. In addition, the exterior of the building is modified to restrict water intrusion the damaged building envelope. The restoration and revitalization of the building will be the first major construction project on the campus in over 30 years and will bring a much needed campus center back to life. Energy performance is improved through the building skin.

GRACE STEM ACADEMY The Grace S.T.E.M. Academy and Community Center is a 39,000 square foot building that serves the community surrounding St. Augustine’s University.

The building functions in several different capacities to serve the needs of the community. The project is a kindergarten through Fifth grade private elementary school focused on STEM curriculum with special programs focused on sustainability and the arts. The project also serves as a community center and social hub for the area. The project serves as a religious facility for the Grace AME Zion Church. The school was developed with the idea that the building could be a teaching tool for the students. The proposed program for the project included a focus on emerging sustainable technologies. The program would include teaching the kids about sustainable and renewal resources, energy conservation and overall environmental consciousness.

The proposed building design was targeted a Net Zero status.

DIVISION 8 OFFICE BUILDING The Division 8 Office Building is a new facility for the NC Department of Transportation. The facility is an example of designing on a restricted budget. An additional challenge was designing a facility that is typically set amongst utilitarian buildings, including office buildings. For a similar cost per square foot, the design team created a light filled and modern interpretation of the utilitarian office type. The design uses familiar materials for the exterior palette. The familiar “red brick” is used a predominant building material, evoking the familiarity of residential homes nearby. The use of black metal panel and phenolic wood paneling accent the wood while presenting a contrast to the simple brick box. The north and south entries are on axis and are created using expansive curtainwall to allow for natural light to flood the spaces beyond. Integrated landscape design compliments the building and site development.

WATTS CHAPEL Watts Chapel Missionary Baptist Church has experienced amazing growth in the last twelve years. The church has seen all demographics and has positive increases in membership and participation. The church has been a corner stone of the community since 1876. To address the increase of new members, new programs were incorporated into the existing site. This program will include a new sanctuary with increased capacity for worshipers, an education facility with expanded classrooms and office space as well as amenity spaces that serve the needs of the church and the community. The design of the building takes full advantage of natural daylight into the spaces created and the formal qualities of the church such as organization and materials create a strong visual presence on the site. The school portion of the facility is dedicated for Sunday School currently but is designed to function as a future private school if the pastor decides to pursue that route.

THE BAR-BER SHOP The Bar-Ber Shop is a unique project that combines the function of a barber shop and the social aspects of a bar and lounge. The project is approximately 1,500 square feet and transformed a long and narrow tenant space in a “strip mall” in Raleigh just south of downtown. The project develops an important part of the barber shop experience in the African American community: social connection.

The barber shop has the functionality of a barber shop and the social atmosphere of a bar and lounge. The barber shop host / hostess staff serves drinks as a complimentary service to the clients while they wait for a haircut. The result is a multi-function space that is used as a social hub for the community.

BROWN ASSEMBLY AND DINING HALL The Brown Assembly and Dining Hall Pavilion is a 4,000 square foot religious facility that functions as a central gathering point for youth of the Missionary Baptist Church across the state of North Carolina during summer camp. The design focuses on the connection of the interior assembly space to its wooded surroundings. A simple form and limited material palette are utilized to create an intervention which stands in balance with its context while introducing a modern aesthetic. The connection with nature is further amplified by the skylights in the main space and in the outdoor passage, which allow for natural light to enhance the experience within. With the vegetation surrounding the building the lighting quality within the structure changes in a visually pronounced way over the course of any given day regardless of the time of year. TRINITY RESIDENCE HALL With 271 beds, the new residence hall completes the Bell Tower quad Duke has developed in the southwest portion of its undergraduate campus. This residence hall is the longterm replacement for a trio of East Campus halls – Epworth, Jarvis and East – that are among the oldest remaining structures on the Duke campus. There are 125 doublerooms, 6 ADA bedrooms, 10 Resident Assistant rooms and 2 Graduate Assistant studios as well as a 3-bedroom Faculty in Residence apartment. Kitchen facilities, a gaming room and a “common gathering space” capable of hosting several small groups, or one large group, add to the residential quality of student life. All residential and public common areas include LED lighting. The design focused on the surrounding context and complimenting the existing historic buildings. The design mandate from the owner was to create a new building that would fit and be of the 21st century but not one that tries to be more than it needs to be.

SOLFERINO NORTH The Solferino North development is a revitalization of a challenging site and existing building. The property is located in a flood plain, traffic is difficult and the existing building has completely outdated and inefficient building systems.

The location of the property has great appeal because of the location to current and proposed developments. The owner desired that the facility be completely transformed to reflect the future use of the building. The proposed renovation will completely change the “skin” of the building, replace the outdated systems, update the landscape and site design and improve the safety of the occupants with increased lighting and revised traffic flow. The design approach focused on the idea of transformation. This idea of transformation is expressed in the building’s new “skin” comprised of curtain wall and glass.

ENTREPRENEUR MUSEUM The African American Entrepreneurs Museum is a unique project dedicated to the history of the African American entrepreneur in America. The proposed project was the runner up in a invited design competition. The design seeks to challenge the typical museum experience where visitors enter into the building, see exhibits and then leave. The proposal “stretches” the museum over a large suburban site and creates an indoor and outdoor experience where visitors are encouraged to enjoy outdoor amenities while visiting the museum.

Daylighting and views are woven into the fabric of the facility. includes a welcome center, business offices, small classroom, spaces for permanent display areas for the museum’s founder, transient displays for the various entrepreneurs being featured. Additional spaces include a gift shop, café and small kitchen, reading room and memorabilia exhibit. The design also includes permanent exterior displays that are on display in the covered and screened outdoor areas.

YMCA CAMP KANATA DINING TheYMCA of the Triangle Camp Kanata Dining Hall and Kitchen Building is a new replacement facility for an outdated facility on the Wake Forest campus of the YMCA’s Camp Kanata. The site is a boucolic site, with beautiful views and mature trees. The site includes multiple pavilion like buildings for campers. These buildings include camp housing, camp director housing, medical facility, meeting pavilions and other support buildings. The heart of the facility is the dining and kitchen building. The design is based on a high respect for the vernacular of the existing camp facilities. Familiar materials and building forms help create the simple but elegant building stand out but at the same time blend in successfully within the context of the camp. The buildings are separated to allow for the owner’s phased construction as well as provide needed queueing for serving food to the campers. Wood slats on the east and west of the building provide needed solar mitigation while allowing views into and out of the dining hall.

MCCLENDON TOWER MUSIC ROOM The design employs limited architectural elements and materials to create a simple yet powerful experience for the users of the space. Upon approach to the suite, visitors are engaged by the black, white, and gray tonal art wall composed of abstract musical iconography. The use of these tones stands in stark contrast to the bold orange glossy plastic laminate that defines the ceiling, and back wall of the entry to the suite. The color of the floor treatment in each area of the project reinforces a clear delineation of zones and accentuates the contrast. The walls of the corridor which provides access to the individual practice rooms, are painted a neutral gray, in deference to the bold statement made at the entry. The only views and abundant natural light permitted into the project are provided in the entry by way of a large southeast facing picture window which overlooks the public way between McClendon Tower and Eden’s Dormitory. The sill of this window is treated as a bench providing a fitting spot for impromptu conversations or even musical collaborations between users of the space.
