How can the environment and architecture be symbiotic? This question comes first in my mind when I try to observe the health care facilities. For me, perhaps the answer is to find the balance among all the complex parts. We should put as much information on the table as possible may help to decide which are the priority problems to deal with. After considering the positive and negative effects of all the solutions, there will be one that meets the most requirements for a successful design. That solution is the balance point for this specific project.

Acute care patients, have the least amount of opportunity to directly access nature during their stay.

We know from evidence-based design that exposure to natural elements improves patient outcomes. In order to provide a view and connection with nature, our team decided to use the power of biophilia to enhance patient and staff wellbeing.

Create Meaningful Green Space

The site is located in a dense area on a tight city block. There is little opportunity for outdoor spaces on the ground level. Providing gardens where patients, visitors and staff can rest, recover and enjoy nature will be important in improving health and outcomes.

Connection to ART

Connecting to ART will be a key component of the project to allow the hospitals to function efficiently together. By utilizing the existing strong public and private circulation paths of Ashley River Tower, the hospitals will work together.

Incorporate Mixed Use

Incorporating Mixed Use will be important for the hospital to fit the urban scale. Inviting the community into the hospital district as well as providing resources for visitors, patients and staff will help the hospital and the campus.

Charleston lies across the water and provides a great environment for the tourists and residents, which makes it become a famous retire city. But the whole peninsula is been threatened by the annual flooding. In this project, we need to take some solutions to protect the people and the buildings.

Softscape to control inland flooding To help flooding within the medical district, hard scapes (such as surface parking lots) will be replaced with landscaping to help absorb water.

Berm along the Ashley River On a larger scale, a berm will be built along Ashley River to protect the district from flooding. In addition to the resiliency, the berm will also create a public space for the CMD and west edge.

In this project, we create the therapeutic garden on the ramp near the Courtenay Dr, which connects with the dining hall on the second floor and continues to the outdoor courtyard near Bravo St. All these public space composite a mixed-use system for the patient and their families and visitors.

FLOODING SOLUTION

Based on the flooding situation, we suppose the first level can be the main entrance during the hurricane, and the green slope will be the deck.

The central sterile processing is on the upper floor so the hospital still functioning and access for the patient.

we have 3 Intensive Care Units and 6 Acute Care Units, each of them has 32 patient beds. All of the patient room has the direct sunlight and none of them face to the west to avoid the glare. The public vertical circulation located near the east side and the private vertical circulation is located near the west side.

For the Intensive Care Unit and Acute Care Unit design, I use the outboard bathroom type to maximize the visibility of the providers. At the same time, pushing the bathroom to the next patient room in order to provide view when the patient lay on the patient bed and composite the family zone with the window deck.

Mental health facilities have unique characteristics to provide safety and security for both patients and staff members. I used the idea of the wall as inspiration to use design as a healing element while meeting FGI and IBC requirements. The wall can not only be the separation of the space but also can be the landscape and interesting place for patient treatment. The curved shape of the wall provides the soft boundary of the courtyard and creates privacy for patients.

CAMPUS This project located in Greenville Health System campus, the whole campus is providing various care for the patient. In the shortage of mental health care, they decide to build a facility to provide professional and efficient mental health care for more people. In this case, the contour is a big challenge. How to interact with the context and how to create the opportunity for inpatient to connect with nature is another challenge.

Maggie’s centers are a global network of drop-in centers, which aim to help anyone who has been affected by cancer. My project is to build a new maggie’s center in Greenville for cancer patients for gathering and community activities. The site is near the Greenville medical campus and contains many original pretty trees. I would like to keep these trees as many as possible and take advantage of the great forest landscape. I designed two bars to embrace the site and optimize the view from the public dining room, meanwhile to separate the private and public functions.

THE TRADITIONAL TIBETAN TYPOLOGY

Tibet buildings have many different size rectangular space as auxiliary part attaching the big palace. Main entrance can been put across these spaces, but the other side is also permitted.The yard shape is like the word“回”.

First floor usually high and upstairs short.Their exterior wall is Wedge-shaped and very thick 1-1.5 meters.

Construction material is stone and wood, they use stone to build exterior wall, pillars and other part is wood. Tranditional main beam wood is 2-2.2 meters long, because this kind of wood can be transport by animals walk on the moutains.

Mosque buildings always have a big rectangular square in front of the big palace and in the middle of square is a fountain.

Their arcade is an important element. Muslim has a Tower to call people to do religious service, this Tower is very high and at the Corner of the mosque.

There are demos in the end of the walking line to emphasize the most important part in the whole space although there isn't a real idol in the mosque.

Curve is disdinguish in muslim buildings ,they use arcs and columns to create an horizontal order as an guidance to the demo.

There are two types landmark during the Tibet Bakuo Conversion Path, Weisang furnaces and Streamer Columns.

SITE ANALYSIS AND CONTEXT This design is located in The Lhasa old town Tibet. Tibetan Buddhism here plays a very important role in people's life. My site is near Jokhang Temple which is the Holy land of Tibet people.

Around the Jokhang Temple is the old town, the buildings and roads here are small-scale, more friendly to walking than driving.

In front of the site is one road called The Tibtan Conversion Path, for Tibet people to walk and knee for their religion sanctum.

Another important factor in the site is there lacated the biggest Mosque in Lhasa, this block is the muslim accumulation zone. So this site is full of different cultural context.

Even througn in this complecated background, there are something can be abstract in common. All religion emphasize to keep pure before enter into a real Sanctum, so bath is necessety for both two kinds of people.

There are three old roads and one new road for Local Tibet people walk like a circle to show their loyalty to god. The oldest one is in the dazhaosi to walk around the main yard , the second one is Bakuo street pass through the old town and da The dazhaosi, the loggest one is Linkuo road across the site, the last one is around The Potala Palace.

Site is in the south easten coner of the Linkuo road, also in the HUI jujuqu .

Plan is based on the prototype analysis of traditional Tibet architecture and Mosque.

The bath is mix of the two examplerary type plan. It use stone wall as main mateial just like old Tibeten buildings.This design uses two yards and two corrides to shape two different spaces type correspound with context of the site,mosque and the road. Tibet and mosque are both use column as unit, but tibet buildings are short and thick because of stone walls, while mosque use arch as important factor. So I use two different way ,one is emphasizing column the other one is pure curve wall.

ENTRANCES Massive walls was emphasize at tibetan yard to create gentle atmosphere while light bright was underline at muslim yard.

Totally contrast scene toward two main factors in the site.

INTRODUCTION Large stadiums always been abandoned after sporting event were finished.

These huge architectures become big garbages, waste money and resources.

If stadium can be design as recycle use will be economic saving. So we make this stadium variable to meet different people's need. They will share it in different time and to keep the stadium be useing all the time.

A smaller structure was putted in front of main stadium as an intro of main architecture, which can change the width to attract people. This was follow a square based on the hight differences.

Steel structure combine with concrete structure and building boards, keep stadium big enough.
