THE ESCAPE

A time o a busy scheduled life

The Escape is a pod, designed in the college premesis to relax and de-stress under a dome of calm and soothing environment that provides a break from the intense and tiring college work cycle. A portal that takes its users to another dimension, away from the taxing day to day work.

Process and Design

The Escape is a core that is designed with elements that draws attention to oneself and not distracted by any other thoughts. A series of concentric paths lead the user into the inner space, disconnecting them from the outer world. The dome makes people feel secure and comfortable and is said to have a positive e ect. Circles give us a feeling that is more welcoming, in a natural world. The water elements bring in depth and calmness leading to a serene feel. Along with the warm lighting and cool breeze, this entire design takes people to zenith of peace.

SALT BUNGALOW

Reviving the Culture and Heritage of Ennore through Tourism

Salt Bungalow is an exciting tourist site and it can further be developed to enhance its essence and provide the tourists with an experience of the site. The site has ruins of a salt bungalow and is in contrast with the rest of Ennore with its thick green cover and a beautiful neighbourhood.

Ennore

There are many stereotypical assumptions attached to these areas in North Madras that often lead to the isolation of the people of this community in a wider world. This design is an attempt to break those taglines and introduce Ennore as a cultural place, rich in preserving its history and heritage.

People and Local Culture

Bringing out the talents of “Ennore” along with their heritage and introducing a transparent and organized settlement alongside generating active points in shady places through architecture can be an onset to see true image of their commuity. Furthermore, these interventions can also help in generating an income to the locals.

Locals

This design attracts all age groups and people from di erent backgrounds.

This space adapts itself to the di erent needs of the users.

It acts as a crossroad for locals and visitors.

All spaces are multifunctional and can handle small or large crowd with services that’re available round the clock.

Qualitative Aspects

One space trancends into another, seamlessly taking a person into a ow of emotions and experiences that break the stigma associated with this place.

The Salt Bungalow

Entering into the Salt Bungalow ( now turned into a cafe), one gets welcomed into the history of Ennore, therby leading them to openess of the site or into a sway of few stories about the locals and their culture. Furthermore, the walk leads into a space of knowledge, multifaceted for several other purposes.

An evening tea by the waters or an early morning boat ride would help to take in more essence of this place. A day or two, or even a week’s stay would leave one is complete awe, painting a new picture of Ennore.

Assimiltive Architecture

Rethinking Housing Settlements

Housing Board or TNUHBD Tenements are often characterised by similar block structures that commonly do not match with the existing living conditions of the people. Making huge changes is not possible due to many practical factors with cost being one of the major one. But some minute changes can create a big magic.

Assimilative Architecture

Every place is attached to an emotion and a sense of belonging. The minute details that help in experiencing these emotions could di erentiate a “House” from a “Home”. When these dwellings are shifted, even if the tangible elements cannot be transferred, the emotions could be recreated if the newer aspects help with creating similar experiences.

Behavioural Analysis

The major di erences in the settltments starting from the height of the building to the arrangements and organization has a major e ect on the daily activities of people and vice versa. Hence there is a gap formed in-between.

Multifunctional Spaces

Though the site is divided equally, the block does not de ne a stereotypical CUBOID but rather a with staggered pathways depicting the movement from existing community.

This design, starting from zoning to concept delopment and process up until planning has kept in mind the demirits and merits alongside stiving to bring in a change in how we see slum board houses. Though these buildings are under some restricted factors like budget, time and site, there are some minute changes that can bring about huge di erence in the living conditions of these people. However, these changes may not seem to re ect majorly on the quantitaive aspect but has a positive e ect on the qualitative aspect.

Concept and Process for Blocks

Taking one block of cuboid to try and work out di erent form that set with the site and cultural context for the local community of people.

Subtractive alterations to one whole block of the form divides the big chunk further into parts, creating circulation that mimic the existing pattern followed in the existing fabric.

Further division of the blocks allow movement not just within but also outside on a ground level, creating more views and a play of circulation.

Creating open spaces in levels 5 and 10 similar to the opening in ground oor to break up the height and give spaces for group activities pertaining to the community.

The movement within this block is purely based on the movement observed from the earlier settlement of the shermen.

The tilt of the building, provides view to the beach from every common area.

The cut edges creat the space for leisure activities within the building. The spaces are not forcefeited but as a part of the circulation space, concentrated in points that enforece “Chance Encounters”

Since open spaces are restricted to the ground but are one of the vital points for these people, they are translated to the upper oors as well, to cut the height.

The site is facing east, that is towards the sea and will experience sea breaze during the evenings, paving way for natural ventilation. Moreover, as the site is facing the east, it recieves good amount of natural light throughout the day.

Design

The people of this community spend most of their time on the ground which is another way of understanding that high rise apartments do not work for them. But the fact that with rapid urbanization, it has become a must to achieve the maximum. But with small interventions and changes, huge di enences can be brought to support the lifestyle of these people.

Concept and Process for Units

A language for Spatial Relations

New shapes can be created by using di erent arrangements and patterns that helps in understanding the relationship between di erent spaces, helping to solve the design.

Why this option ?

Family of 4 or more

Open Kitchen - Connected with hall

- Open & looks spacious

- Avoids restrictions

- Visual connectivity

- Spatial comfort

Seperate WC and Bath

Can be used by two people at a time.

Privacy for room, bath and WC

Transition from room to bathing area

Seperates private segment from semiprivate segment

In this plan the arrangements of the spaces are as such that is provides good lighting and ventilations to the entire house. Moreover the unit gives enough space for free movement.

Permutation and Combination

Di erent Permutations and combinations have nally lead to this nal design that supports di erent aspects such as group gatherings, spaces for leisure at higher levels, view to the beach, movement, cluster spaces and close knit community. These aspects have not only been followed in the site but also in every block and oor level.

Free Movement Flexibility in Seating

Design

This unit has been designed, keeping in mind the fact that these users have di erent activities and play various roles thoughout the day. At rst the living room is extended into the kitchen, creating one big space rather than breaking it up into rooms. This gives a more comfortable living space and also more light and ventilation. Next, there is a common area that divides the private spaces from the semi-private spaces. This area gives privacy into the bedroom, bathroom and toilet. Since this unit is occupied by four or more people of one family, the bathroom and toilet are placed individually, so that is can be used at the same time without any disturbances, for the same reason why it is also not attaced to the room. On the whole, this unit not only solves the functional aspects but also the qualitative aspects of living.

Ashok Leyland Styling Studio

The Ashok Leyland Technical Center is a space that celebrates light and materials and colours, that o er to blend along with its environment. The natural embellishment plays between the light and shadow, through the glass adornment that gives a huge breath of openness. The transparency through each of the working space brings in a grandeur in its own salient manner.

The Exotic Interiors

Bringing dreams to life

Every space has its own character, based on its context and the client’s vision. Every interior project is a work of dream that upon visualization can be given life and the very soul of the design can be made to be experienced. Every colour, texture and lighting has a story to narrate that illuminates the design, live from a dream.

The Complete Bath Sense

This bathroom is of magic sense that takes us to a tranquil state of imagination with its calm and wondrous space, feeling as though being lost somewhere between the rocks. Those rough grey tiles glide from shades of grey, giving a sense of Earth. Well, all organic is nature’s play and so is the mirror and the exotic wash basin, crafted from river stone from the lands of Indonesia. They are just one of its kinds. A soft excitement and peaceful bath sense is what this Earth bathroom is all about.

Soul Kitchen

Stepping into a morning bliss during sun rise and sneaking in for a late night snack, past midnight, this dream kitchen is a t for all. Food is love and the cook is god, so they deserve a merryland. Right from the selection of materials to the concept of lighting, this kitchen enlightens the soul. Just as how the ow of spaces take one from the living room to the kitchen, the connection between spaces break the barrier, making this an inclusive space. However, due to good ventilation, there is no fear of smoke intruding into the living space. On the whole, this is no ordinary but a dream come true Kitchen.

Expressing a design through words creates a bridge between the designer and client, helping them to understand the deign in a better way. It also acts as a foreword to the design, giving the users an excitement of what’s forthcoming.

The world of Design through Words

Much Significant Architectural Content Writing

“Treasury is the root of administraon” and paddy crops are epitomized for prosperity and growth, as also represented in their logo. The very same are extracted into a glow of admiraon, over the view point as a moment of wonder and in its humbleness, a sense of hope that is hinted on the upper limit. The brightly lit ambience with order and symmetric composion of elements, establishes a formal impression of respect and duty. Every point, line and plane placed in the surroundings is focused towards creang balance and harmony to bring in string, clarity of decision. The energy flows from the top and transcends to the walls, creang a stream of focal bands. On the whole, the design is of confidence and integrity of thoughts.

A Home of Joy

Home is where the heart is. Farther lands we explore, yet our motherland is where a sense of home is felt. But not every house becomes a home. It takes effort, emoons and a feeling of “self” to make that place a home. The subtle warmth felt within the play of light and dark shades, imposed in crust brown wooden panel and sharp shine walls that are spread between the breezy white ceiling and cool beige floor in the living room, is already a family that welcomes its kin into the core. The textures of fabric layered on the seee wraps this family at dusk, into a bundle joy. At dawn, when the day begins in the kitchen, the morning rays play hide and seek, giving a boost for an excing start. Furthermore, the rich aroma, drives the family into the sparkling dining that not only serves a treat to one’s appete but also to the vision. And in the end, it’s the sweetest of dreams that complete the hours where the true self is felt in the haven. As every light dims off, they move into a course of wonderland.
