News-in-brief News-in-brief

This term, we had a myriad of events occurring, including the vibrant activity week, from the 10th to 14th of March. Students were stimulated, challenged and rewarded with every experience. AISHK adventurers engaged in programmes focused on culture, skill and service and travelled all over the world from Japan to Paris. Those who didn’t go abroad, stayed in Hong Kong to find culture on our doorstep, with martial arts. They also were able to give back to this amazing city by getting involved in community projects.

If you were fortunate enough to see Coldplay this week, it was a concert to be remembered. With all the special effects and the focus on wildlife conservation that the band is heavily involved in, they are a force to be reckoned with. Great music with a positive message! It’s good for the soul. Get a sneaky look here.

Mental Health Awareness with Ms Spencer

Ms Spencer, thank you for chatting with us for our PDHPE and wellbeing edition of The Voice. You work with many students to support them through challenging patches at school, so who better to ask about looking after your mental health. We have spoken with Nurse Esperanza, but please give us the Counsellor’s perspective...

How can students determine if they need additional professional mental health support?

There are many signs and indicators that may suggest it’s time to seek mental health support. persistent feelings of sadness or anxiety that stays with you for a sustained period of time changes in behaviour withdrawal declining focus unexplained physical symptoms or problems without a clear medical cause difficulty coping with stress overwhelmed by daily life changes in appetite or significant weight changes using alcohol or drugs as a coping mechanism for stress or emotional pain.

How can mental health problems in students be identified?

There are many possible signs and indications, such as: changes in mood or energy levels social withdrawal declining academic performance less or no participation in activities, especially those that they have previously enjoyed

We spoke to Nurse Esperanza and asked her for strategies to help students to improve their mood if they are feeling low. Could you also give us some strategies from the School Counsellor’s perspective?

Sleep is often seen to be the most critical factor for both mood and mental health. Studies show that poor sleep can lead to more frequent negative moods, irritability and even increase the risk of mental health conditions like depression and anxiety. Students should create a sleep-friendly environment, limit screen time before bed, and practice relaxation techniques.

Apart from developing healthy habits, you can also develop many positive ways to handle tough times. These include: journaling art regular catch-ups spend time in nature music WHO CAN HELP YOU IF YOU NEED SUPPORT?

MENTAL HEALTH

Mental health. It's a buzzword that everybody hears these days. But what exactly is mental health? How is mental health affecting HK’s youth and how does physical activity come into play?

Research suggests that sport and exercise are two great ways to boost mental wellbeing.. Team sports help people build relationships and find a community. As you may already know, a vital aspect of good mental wellbeing is to have strong friendships and feel a sense of belonging.

Furthermore, physical activity produces hormones called endorphins. Endorphins make us feel great, whilst simultaneously lowering hormones related to stress, such as cortisol. According to the Mental Health Foundation, an organization helping to improve mental health within the UK, people who exercise daily also have 20%-30% less risk of developing depression or dementia. Exercise not only increases your physical strength but also lifts your mood and decreases negative feelings. Exercising can make people feel confident as they are actively working towards better health.

However, there can be a few hurdles before you reach that point. Many wish to start exercising but lack the confidence to begin. If you are one of those people, don’t be afraid. It’s often difficult to start something new. Lower intensity options exist, such as stretching or going for regular walks. It is crucial to promote these less strenuous activities to lower the barrier to entry. Additionally, for those who lack time for an hour long run, plenty of five to ten minute workout programs can be found on platforms such as YouTube. You can do it, just give it a go!

Mental health is often dismissed as a trendy term or an excuse for feeling down, but its impact on teenagers is profound and far-reaching. With the rise of social media, mental health has taken centre stage in shaping the lives of many teens. It influences their emotional well-being, academic achievements, relationships, and overall growth. The teenage years, already a whirlwind of physical, psychological, and social changes, leave adolescents especially vulnerable to mental health challenges. It is an essential topic to address.

Several factors influence the mental health of teenagers. Their family environment plays a key role; supportive families can provide a sense of stability, while conflict or neglect can have negative impacts. Friendships and peer pressure are also critical — teens often face the challenge of fitting in or navigating bullying. On top of that, academic pressure creates stress, with many students striving to meet high expectations. The rise of social media has compounded these issues, as it introduces concerns such as cyberbullying and the need to project a perfect image. Hormonal changes and trauma, such as loss or abuse, add further complexities.

The effects of poor mental health are wide-ranging. Many teens experience increased stress, anxiety, or depression, often accompanied by mood swings or even body dysmorphia. They might engage in risky behavior or emotionally withdraw from loved ones. Difficulty concentrating can lead to a decline in academic performance or motivation, while strained relationships and isolation can deepen their struggles. Physically, mental health issues can manifest as fatigue, appetite changes, or other psychosomatic symptoms.

Addressing teen mental health requires a focus on open dialogue, support systems, and professional resources. By recognizing the factors at play and understanding their effects, we can create an environment that prioritizes teens' well-being and sets them on a path for healthier futures.

Make an effort for your mental health

It is often difficult to make the effort to maintain or improve your mental health. You don’t feel like it! You’re too busy! You don’t have the energy! But here is a bit of encouragement, reminding you why you have to just do it!

Sometimes, we don’t have a choice in what we do. For example, there are subjects at school that are compulsory. We spoke to Mr Van Gaalen about why PDHPE is so important that we are made to do it. He told us that it...

Encourages Holistic Growth: PDHPE addresses physical, emotional, and social aspects, ensuring well-rounded development.

Promotes Healthy Lifestyle Choices: It teaches students how to make informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, and mental health.

Fosters Emotional Intelligence: Students learn to understand, express, and manage their emotions effectively.

Raises Awareness about Social Issues: Topics like relationships, bullying, and personal safety are covered to empower students in real-life situations.

Supports Mental Well-being: PDHPE emphasizes stress management and mental health, equipping students to navigate challenges.

Builds Physical Fitness: It helps students maintain good health and develop lifelong habits of regular physical activity.

Improves Interpersonal Skills: Activities encourage teamwork, empathy, and communication among peers.

Teaches Resilience: PDHPE helps students handle setbacks and build a positive outlook on life.

So get your PE kit on and build all of these skills whilst you run around!

AISHK 30th Anniversary

AISHK celebrated its 30th anniversary this term with a celebration of students, staff alumni and culture. The AISHK community joined with former students, teachers and heads of school to look back at a remarkable 30 years.

Everyone was treated to a spectacular lion dance, which took place on the field, alongside a cultural Bai San blessing for our school. Afterwards, a sudden flashmob captivated the attention of students and parents as they injected some energy and fun into the day. After the lion dance, everyone enjoyed a good old Aussie BBQ whilst listening to live performances. The 30th anniversary truly marked a huge milestone for AISHK. It showcased a proud, vibrant school and a caring and engaged wider community.
