We are honored to extend a heartfelt tribute to Rabbi Alon Tolwin, whose leadership stands as a beacon of inspiration, guiding us with wisdom, kindness, and an innate understanding of the human spirit.

Rabbi Tolwin has not only shared profound teachings but has exemplified these values through his actions. His authenticity and genuine care for each individual have been transformative, inspiring personal growth and contributing positively to the world around us.

Rabbi Tolwin's impact is far-reaching. His ability to connect with people, irrespective of background or beliefs, speaks volumes about his open heart and inclusive approach to teaching Jewish wisdom.

In joining Aish Detroit to celebrate Rabbi Tolwin, we acknowledge his role as a co-founder alongside Rabbi Fishel Mael, tirelessly sharing the timeless beauty of Jewish wisdom with the next generation.

Rabbi Tolwin honors the memory of his beloved teacher, Rav Noach, z’tl, by integrating these six guiding principles that he lives by: ●

Set your goal to be an Oved HaShem, a servant of God.

Be a Kiddush HaShem.

Learn the simple meaning of the text; let the Torah teach you (don’t read your ideas into the Torah).

Love Jews; bringing people closer is all about the relationship.

Be energized by doing the will of the Almighty.

Rabbi Tolwin, your constancy in an increasingly chaotic world is deeply appreciated. Thank you for your unwavering dedication, positive energy, loyalty, and friendship.

Dear Rabbi Tolwin: Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “Dare to live the life you have dreamed for yourself. Go forward and make your dreams come true.”

I can not think of a more fitting sentiment upon your retirement from Aish Detroit. When you returned to Detroit from Israel in 1984, you were inspired by Rabbi Noah Weinberg (of Blessed Memory) and you, in turn, inspired countless Detroiters to find their flame of Judaism. In doing so, you made so many dreams come true, and created so much good in the world.

I will always be forever grateful to you for the kindness you showed to my father during his summer visits to stay with me after my mother passed away. His conversations with you always left him with a sense of peace and comfort as he struggled to adjust to living his life without his beloved.

As you reflect back on the community you built when you started Aish Detroit some forty years ago, you must feel so proud to know that your hard work and passion have touched so many lives for the better. You have a kind heart and a keen interest in connecting with people which shines through whenever you engage in conversation. I feel it every time we speak to each other.

I wish you good health and happiness on your retirement. This is not goodbye, but merely so long, for now.

I am a more serious person --in a good way-- through our talks and your teachings.

And now we cast our pod together (I think that's how you say it!) and this experimental project is a new and supreme joy.

"A Rabbi And A Skeptic Walk Into A Podcast", now over 20 episodes deep and growing, has had several hundred streams in just a few months. Many of my friends and relatives, and friends of my children tell me that they never miss an episode!

Your wisdom is reaching more and more people.

I hope our podcast reaches anyone and everyone who can appreciate your wisdom and joy as your share the beauty of Judaism in your unique personal style. I hope your descendants listen to it for decades to come and marvel at the joyous, positive, patient, understanding and clear way you explain deep and complex and important topics to our listeners.

I don't know what retirement means. How does one retire from being wise?

Your teaching deserves to last forever.

There's a (raging) argument among my siblings - your kids - as to which lessons come from you.

Several of them said that you taught us that Hashem loves us. But I remember you bringing me to see Reb Noach when I was a young girl, and he looked me straight in the eye and said, Faygie, you know the Almighty loves you? I always attributed that teaching to your Rebbe.

Here's the peaceful resolution: you raised us with the constant reminder that God loves us, and to recognize that everything comes from a source. Many of your wise teachings came from our Zaidy Yale Tolwin, z"l, and others from your mentor Rav Noah Weinberg, zt"l.

When you add your personality, your love of Torah, of people, of ideas, your musical and artistic abilities, and your collection of PEOPLE around the world, it makes for a pretty awesome Daddy and Zaidy.

Mazel tov, shkoiach ("kudos" for those who don't speak yiddish), and enjoy this next stage.

Thirty years is a long time.

Around thirty years ago I was going through some very challenging times and I was looking for a voice that would know more about life than I did, at that time.

Among those who were closest to me there was one who said… There is a new guy in town that people say is warm and friendly, why don’t you call him?

So I called Alon Tolwin.

At that time Alon had an office in Franklin.

I did not know him and he certainly did not know me.

Early on, in that first conversation, he invited me to come to his office.

We walked and talked around Franklin for three hours.

I don’t want to say that he saved my life that day but he most definitely changed my life and he has ever since.

Here is to you, Alon Tolwin!

One of the kindest and sweetest and wisest men I have ever had the privilege to know.

Thank you for that first day and for all of those days that have followed us until today.
