For 30 years, the American International School Chennai (AISC) has been where global journeys begin and excellence drives purpose.
Rooted in the culture and warmth of Tamil Nadu, AISC brings together learners who find belonging while preparing to make their mark on the world. Here, students chart their paths with curiosity, act purposefully

ACTIVITIES & DISCOVERY PROGRAM
Our high school offers a vibrant student life with more than 50 student-led clubs and organizations, and an impressive 76% of students participating in at least one of them. Athletics are a strong part of the community, with 10 interscholastic teams and nearly 30% of students playing on at least one team. The arts thrive as well, with signature events such as the annual Theater Festival and Contemporary Arts Festival. Beyond extracurriculars, every high school student takes part in the robust Discovery Program, which emphasizes experiential learning, social-emotional growth, inquiry, and reflection—helping students develop both academically and personally.
Scale
Standards-Based Assessment and Reporting (SBAR) Grading Policy
AISC follows a standards-based assessment and reporting (SBAR) model. Students receive feedback using a 1–8 achievement scale, which reflects their most consistent and recent evidence of learning. Final course scores are determined at the end of each semester, based on the relative weight of three academic strands: Knowledge & Understanding, Thinking & Transfer, and Communication. The achievement scale is interpreted as follows:
• 7–8: Exemplary
• 5–6: Proficient
• 3–4: Developing
• 1–2: Beginning / Insufficient No credit is awarded at the Beginning / Insufficient level.
To support external institutions in understanding our grading rigor, AISC also provides a SBAR conversion to a traditional A–F scale.
GRADE DISTRIBUTION | Class of 2026 (11th Grade)

As an inclusive school, we welcome and support students with diverse strengths, interests, and learning profiles. All students who aspire to pursue the full IB Diploma Program are encouraged to do so, and we provide the guidance and resources they need to strive for success
At AISC, full IB Diploma students may take no more than three Higher Level (HL) courses and six courses in total.
At AISC, the Advanced Placement program is accessible to all students in Grades 10–12 who successfully meet the established course prerequisites.
To support wellbeing and academic success, we strongly recommend that students take no more than three AP courses per year due to their rigor and accelerated pace. Those wishing to exceed this limit must complete a formal waiver process with their counselor to ensure a balanced and sustainable workload.
