ho and what is rocking Namibia at the moment? The geology and geomorphology of our diverse country is varied, versatile and voluptuous and thus is the cultural scene. There are secret treasures, hidden gems and miraculous vistas, sometimes austere, sometimes opulent and at other times weathered and brittle. Ancient endemic cultures mingle with recent and modern influences, juvenility meets seniority, hemispheres embrace and distinguish, life rolls and rocks!

Emma Rocks German-Dutch fashion model Emma Engel (18) recently rocks the fashion scene in Capetown, Windhoek, Frankfurt and the like. After finishing with top marks in her final school exams at the German School in Namibia’s capital last year, she will now spend time to take on modelling jobs before starting her university career in Europe. Renowned fashion companies have taken on Emma for upcoming photo shoot sessions. At the same time “EMMA ROCKS” appears as a title of a RUSHOUR song on their recent album “FLAMINGO TIME”. Emma Engel being an ardent fan of the band attended gigs and took part in fashion events where the rock group played. There are plans to create a musical called “EMMA ROCKS” for the Namibian cultural scene.

RUSHOUR rock it again! After the widespread success with their first album “This is Africa,” the Windhoek rock band RUSHOUR is back on the scene again with their new studio album “FLAMINGO TIME” and altogether nine invigorating and inciting rock ‘n roll songs for a wide-ranging audience.

They developed their unique style digging into the history of rock from the sixties onwards, adding to their “Namibian” flavoured debut album with an even more human approach. Take the music on your car radio, jogging/cycling earphones or powerful stereo system and move along in party mood with songs like “All Out Of Rock”, “Something About Love” and “Welcome The Rain” plus many more. The band is proud of the fantastic lead guitar work by Andreas Hofmeyr, the creative bass play and distinctive vocal by Etienne Hofmeyr, and the refined drumming by Johannes Löytty, plus their vocal backing of Klaus Rennack’s raunchy lead voice. Deadvlei

– an extraordinary landscape Ben McRae is a photographer based out of Wollongong on the beautiful South Coast of New South Wales, Australia. As an Ocean Lifeguard, winter is his own…and that’s when he follows his passion, photography in Africa. His photographic tours are legendary. McRae talks about Namibia and Deadvlei. Words & photographs by Ben McRae

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

EDITORIAL

I do wonder why I travel so far to see dead trees and sand. I also wonder why I have been coming back for over a decade. It’s not like Deadvlei is in my back yard, it’s all the way on the other side of the world from my home in Australia. We have dead trees, cracked pans and sand dunes there too, but I don’t care for these. There is something special about Deadvlei.” “When I first decided to travel to Namibia it was a cut out from the Sunday paper that showed towering red dunes, their sides shimmering in the last of the day’s light. The colour itself was spectacular, but it was the twisted forms that stood against time at their base that drew me in. What a contrast, the cracked pan that held them in place for centuries on centuries made me wonder, what was this place? I knew I had to book a ticket” “Long days of travel, flying, traversing wiggly lines on a worn map soon had me trudging through the oxide rich sand. As the sand became trapped in the contours of my feet, they too became the colour of the land. This amused me as I walked, I did not know Deadvlei was a 15 minute walk through the desert, but it was all part of the mystery. Had I known it, it would have added to the lure. I just would not have done the walk in the heat of the day! “I breathed a little harder as I reached the crest of a dune. The gradual rise crept up on me but it was not the physical exertion that drew my breath away, it was the scope of Deadvlei’s size!”

EDITORIAL

“Like ants below, tourists of every creed marvelled at the trees lost in time. The dried out carcasses were testimony to the time when the Tsauchab River flowed that far. I had never thought about the scale of these trees until now. Fully grown Camelthorn trees dwarfed those who had travelled so far to see what I had, dead trees and sand.” “As I looked up into their branches, studied their bark and stepped cautiously over their contorted roots, I wondered what stories these trees could tell. This was not a landscape, but a chapter in the history of time. I was moved.” “I thought about the journey the sands had come on from their origins high in South Africa’s Drakensberg, down the Orange River, only to be dumped unceremoniously into the sea. The Cold Atlantic’s waters then tossed them from side to side before once again becoming part of the land.” “Their journey had not been an easy one but it would only get worse after this, millions of years blown inland at the winds peril.” “Each and every grain of sand’s journey had not been in vain, as here in this inhospitable corner of Namibia their true beauty is able to come to the fore, even if their journey has not yet finished.” “I remember that first experience all those years ago. Since then I have returned too many times to count and seen the many faces this landscape has to disclose. For some unknown reason I keep coming back, but each and every time I realise there is another act to the show.” “Deadvlei is only a snippet of the greater Naukluft National Park, the beauty of which is unrivalled. Every section of the Park has something to offer travellers and photographers. It’s this beauty that draws thousands of visitors a week. Sadly, in this age of Instagram fame, social media likes and shares, these trees and the Park are suffering. Rubbish is being discarded, trees are climbed or broken, and people are driving vehicles off road.”

24

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

“Since my first visit I now notice many changes. I wonder how it was 30 or 50 years ago. What had changed from then to my first time, how many more trees stood where they do not any more due to the hands of irresponsible visitors; visitors who had come to marvel at nature’s beauty.” “If you are travelling to this special corner of the globe, please do so with the upmost respect. Today in the area we have many freedoms, but new signs are appearing regularly. Please stick to the roads - there are many unseen creatures that call the area home. Take all litter away with you; there are many antelope, brown hyena and jackals that call this cut into the sand dunes home. Please also only climb the dunes designated for this activity, as your footsteps can disrupt others’ views.” “If everybody plays their part, this landscape will last. Without your help and respect, what is will cease to be and we will all be forced to view the trees from rope walkways or even worse, from photos taken in bygone times.”

D

espite being an art school dropout, and not having a single workshop, residency or formal artistic experience as guidance, over the past 30 years Michael Mansfield has been spending his days teaching himself as much as he possibly can about the medium and its history. Having gained his wide and varied knowledge – and witty artistic approach – straight from the most recognised European artists, he admits, “Old Masters are the best teachers, after all.” An admirer of Western Art, he explains, “My work almost always deals with the history of Western Art. I rework the themes that were beloved by classical artists and poke gentle fun, as one wise critic put it. That’s what I’m referencing, the themes, not the mythology…” With three solo exhibitions under his belt and successfully working his way to “at least one solo exhibition every 18 months”, the artist is currently showcasing his fourth at The Project Room Gallery in Windhoek. Since his last solo, ‘Who Killed Mr Art?’ – a title inspired by the presentation of figurative character paintings based on a fictional murder mystery – featured in 2017 at the National Art Gallery of Namibia, Michael has received acclaim as representing an ambience of youth - and playfulness in his work. A focus once again dominant in his latest show, ‘Mythtakes (and other attempts)’, the exhibition features a diversity of works inspired by both modern and historical themes and artworks, ranging from David Hockney and Damien Hirst, to older masters such as Joseph Beuys and Jan van Eyck. It comprises monochrome pencil drawings and charcoal pieces, as well as a selection of creative dioramas with catchy titles representing a play on above masters’ works, such as, “The impossibility of

making a meaningful work of art with an inflatable shark”, “Joe was starting to like America a lot less” and “Peter didn’t find it as funny as David did”. Michael emphasises that “the purpose of a lot of my work is to make the viewer aware of art history. The piece means nothing without the back-story, so it educates the viewer – if he wants to be educated.” As a result and not surprisingly, most of his buyers are fellow artists who “get it and are amused by it.” Responding to questions around his future career plans, he states, “I don’t really have any grand plans, other than to keep making art. Recognition means very little to me. It’s the making of the work that’s important.” ‘Mythtakes (and other attempts)’ is opening Friday the 17th of May and can be viewed at The Project Room until the 1st of June. Tackling the business end of the year Reinvesting or drawing excess cash from your business

A

s we pass through the first quarter of 2019, interesting questions and challenges arise for Namibian and SADC business owners. For many, it’s not only the end of their financial year, but also time to think about taxes and dividends. This part of the year gives business owners, especially small to medium businesses, the chance to consider the general financial health of their company and to look at alternative ways in which to manage funds in their company. As business owners, they can also look at lowering the company’s overall risk. Points to consider if you’re a business owner is, • Simplifying your cash management • Reinvesting back into the business • Evaluating what is the best way to hold on to excess capital • Pay out dividends to shareholders, investor or yourself What you probably aren’t thinking about is that the main risk for business owners is that by keeping their funds in the company means that most of their wealth is tied up in their business. This could lead to financial pitfalls should the business not yield the returns expected (be as profitable as one might like), or in the worst case should the business fail. Where should you start? Well, firstly, it is important to manage the risk and return in the actual business. A simple way is through effective cash management, which in turn would help boost profits. An example would be to invest any surplus cash in a call account or Money Market Account, some sort of account where your money can grow.

There are a few available, but a Simonis Storm money market account offers a good interest rate, meaning your business can earn great interest tax free, and you can access your cash within 24 hours. If you’re a smaller business owner who’s cash is tied up in their company, keeping funds on such a call account will allow you to keep any excess funds out of your transactional account – making it clear what funds are available and working in your cash flow – and what funds are available to be used to make payments such as bimonthly VAT payments, provisional tax payments, or to pay salaries. You could also use the call account to save for capital expenses which would allow you to maintain your current scope of work or in the longer term, increase your operations without touching actual working capital. On the other hand, you can further manage your risk by making sure that your company’s assets are properly insured; also think about key-man/woman insurance policies. Also known as business life insurance, it usually insures the owner or a key employee whose absence would mean the end of the company. Further, you could ask yourself what your eventual exit strategy from the business is. Do you have succession planning in place, or if you should choose to sell your business one day, do you need a valuation? Or if you enjoy great growth could you list your business on a stock exchange? If you have already thought of everything, or are the owner of a slightly larger business, while managing the risk of your company is important, it is just as vital for you to diversify your own risk in your personal capacity as a business owner by starting an investment portfolio outside the business investment.

32

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

INVESTMENT

Are you expecting excess cash to paid out by the business by declaring a dividend? Ideally, this money should be used to invest in other investment products such as a share portfolio or bonds – instead of a mid-year holiday! Investment products such as these and others can also have a positive influence on your overall personal tax liability come the end of the next period. Something important to bear in mind is that the Minister of Finance has also indicated in his proposed tax amendments that withholding tax on dividends might be imposed and result in additional tax payable on cash that is not distributed by a company now, but rather kept in the business and only distributed by paying a dividend at a later stage. Along with the tax amendments, as a director, you can be held liable in your personal capacity for negligent dealings of a business. That’s why it is as important as ever to speak to a Simonis Storm advisor in order to ensure that while you do everything in your power to ensure transparent and fair business dealings, that your investments are properly structured to protect your personal wealth.

Our Wealth Team

NOW THAT YOU’VE TASTED SUCCESS, WHAT’S NEXT? While your business turns a good profit, you should ensure that it doesn’t mean your personal wealth is tied up in one investment vehicle. From money market accounts to share 210 mm x 172 portfolios, we can offer the investment strategy tailored to your needs. This leaves you to focus on your company and our team to truly grow your personal equity well into the future.

The Made in Namibia Collection Raymond and Marilyn Spall wanted to become catalysts for those in Namibia who were creating wonderful crafts, but didn’t have the marketing skills or access to a retail outlet. A year ago, they opened the doors of The Made in Namibia Collection retail shop in Swakopmund. This is their story‌and that of their many suppliers. aymond Spall explained the early beginnings of the Made in Namibia Collection: “About four years ago, my wife Marilyn and I took a small variety of items Made in Namibia and visited my clientele base in the Kavango and Zambezi regions (as part of a scheduled bi-annual sales trip to the north eastern region of Namibia). We sold everything and came back with a warm happy feeling, a vision and a Kombi full of Kavango baskets…” Today, The Made in Namibia Collection encompasses a retail shop in Swakopmund (showcasing the entire collection of exclusively produced Namibian products), as well as the supply of a selection of such items to tourism establishments countrywide. Raymond says that their ethos is quite simply, “To supply souvenir, curio and gift products that are proudly made or manufactured in Namibia (from concept to completion) and to furthermore support complementary Namibian businesses when it comes to the printing of labels, packaging and/or the purchases of materials needed to finalize such memorabilia items.” Right from those early days – and more recently since the opening of the retail shop - the concept has blossomed exponentially, and the Spalls currently work regularly with over 20 self-employed Namibians…and growing. For over three years, they’ve worked with Hileni, Chairperson of Panduleni Crafts in Omathiya, Judith, a seamstress from Omaruru, Sophia, owner of Desert Secrets Body Care range, and JP, an entrepreneur in the printing industry in Windhoek. But there are so many more craftspersons, like Samuel and Afas at the Cosdef Centre Swakopmund, Philadelphia, the Herero dollmaker from Windhoek, and Work of Our Hands Okahandja jewellery makers in Okahandja. The Spalls have a growing number of artisans, street vendors, crafters and entrepreneurs that come to see them regularly at the Made in Namibia Collection Shop.

COLORECTAL CANCER Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancers in both men and women and can be prevented through regular screening. Screening can help to detect colorectal cancer when it’s small, hasn’t spread, and might be easier to treat. Regular screening should occur if a family history of colon cancer is present and once the age of 50 is reached, it should be done every five years.

Winemaker shows her bottled memories of Namibia Text by Emile Joubert Photographs supplied by Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards

It does not look like your standard South African wine label, nor does the name sound like one. But Nuiba, the range of wines made by well-known cellar maestro Suzanne Coetzee, comes from the heart of a individual-minded winemaker and memories of a special place. The four wines in the range are named after the Genis (Suzanne’s maiden name) family farm in the Gobabis region of Namibia, about as far removed from the vineyard-clad slopes of the Cape wine region where she has made a name as one of the new breed of exciting South African winemakers. “Deciding on the name and the concept to put on my first solo wine venture, that decision to go back to my roots came naturally,” says Coetzee who has worked at some of South Africa’s leading wineries including Boekehoutskloof, Vriesenhof, Boland Cellars and Clos Malverne. “Just as the contents of every bottle of wine you make represent something of your soul, so too I selected a name with a very special meaning; the cattle-farm at Gobabis where I spent so many happy childhood days. As any Namibian knows, the country and its people are forever embedded in you, no matter where you find yourself later in life.” The four wines in the range, each bearing a bold rural image harking back to her rural Namibian roots, are each simply named 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th post. But each wine is starkly contrasted to the other, both in grape variety as well as its individual flavour profile. The four wines are Semillon Sauvignon Blanc (1st Post), a Shiraz (2nd Post), a Cape Blend (3rd Post) and the 4th Post a Semillon Malbec blend. She is very specific about the origin of the grapes used for these wines, believing that terroir and site lie at the core of the distinctiveness found in the range. Although the Nuiba range has only really been on the market since last year, it has already made its mark – the Cape Blend 2016 winning a Double Gold at the 2018 Michelangelo International Wine and Spirits Awards. “My wines are made from Piekenierskloof grapes,” says Suzanne, referring to the Citrusdal-Clanwilliam region known for its hardy landscape that allows various grape varieties to attain unique expressions of fruit quality. “Piekenierskloof is a very unique area where most of the vines are bush vines and planted in dryland conditions. The result is small berries with high concentrations and very unique flavour profiles.” Her winemaking philosophy is to retain the primary grape flavours and to interfere as little as possible during the winemaking process. “I ferment in open fermenters and do as many punchdowns as I can so as to get as much flavour-extraction from these wonderful grapes as possible.” To maintain fruit character and elegance the wines are sent to older barrels for malolactic fermentation and ageing.

The limited release 1st Post 2016, a Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blend, is a pale-yellow straw colour with green flashes when held up to the light. A zesty wine with full generous ripe fruit aromas, ripe white fleshed peaches and grassy undertones. From entry, this wine is a total joy. The palate shows lively green apple and citrus with a soft mid-palate and a refreshing finish; fabulous Sauvignon fruit of sweet limes, melon and mango. The weight of the Semillon balances the wine perfectly in the palate, and well-integrated oak adds a rich creamy taste. The perfect food wine. The Shiraz, also known as the 2nd Post 2016, is a wine with plush red fruit flavours, supported with oak undertones – just enough not to detract from the primary Shiraz fruit flavours. The wine’s grippy tannins make for the perfect accompaniment to a saucy steak or spicy curry. The Nuiba 3rd Post 2016 is a Cape blend made from 100% Piekenierskloof grapes, and comprises a blend of Pinotage (52%), Cabernet Sauvignon (30%) and Grenache (18%).The grapes were carefully sourced from Pinotage vineyards older than 35 years of age, with Cabernet Sauvignon grapes sourced from bush vines. The wine has an intense fruit driven character with notes of plums and cherries. The Cabernet Sauvignon gives the wine enough grip to ensure beautiful ageing while the Grenache gives the wine finesse. The wine pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as oxtail and lamb shank. The 4th Post 2017, a Semillon Malbec blend, completes the range. A first of its kind these two Bordeaux varietals make the perfect match for this unique Rosé-style wine. With grapes sourced from the Stellenbosch area, the wine was fermented in third fill barrels, giving it complexity and mouthfeel, yet still maintaining its fruity flavours as well as freshness. The perfect Summer wine, enjoy chilled on its own or served with seafood dishes such a seared salmon or paella.

Besides her polished and classy wines having achieved critical and commercial recognition, there is a lot of talk in wine circles about the inspirational and original name Nuiba. “It is very special to me, although my parents sold the farm a few years back,” says Suzanne. “Nuiba is not just a word; it’s also not just a wine.. Nuiba is a place. It is a farm in Namibia where I grew up and where I found who I am; it symbolizes the real me. “It’s where I learned what it is to be thankful for rain, how to wake up early and go to the sheep paddock to let them out for the day; where I learned how to bake bread in a coal stove and that the stars are much brighter when there is no electricity – that you need to be careful of scorpions at night when walking barefoot and that one can hunt but that you also have to preserve the wildlife on your farm; it’s where I learned to be creative and to plan the week’s meals wisely because supplies are only fresh once a week. It’s is where the silence can be so overpowering; and where you learn to spend evenings together around a fire instead of a TV; where time sometimes stands still and one can breathe.. it is a place where my heart escapes to in my dreams. ” And although not everyone can escape to such a magical place, Suzanne hopes that her experience can be shared through her wines.

Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 British photographer Richard Barnton’s ‘The Gauntlet’ seized top prize in Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 (UPY). It’s a sensational image…but there are many many more, which are captivating. Edited by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied

U

nderwater Photographer of the Year is an annual competition, based in the UK, that seeks to celebrate photography beneath the surface of the ocean, lakes and even swimming pools. British photographer Phil Smith was the first underwater Photographer of the Year, named in 1965. Today’s competition has 13 categories, testing photographers with themes such as Macro, Wide Angle, Behaviour and Wreck photography, as well as four categories for photos taken specifically in British waters. This year’s judges were experienced underwater photographers Peter Rowlands, Martin Edge and Alex Mustard. Richard Barnden’s photograph triumphed over 5000 underwater pictures entered by underwater photographers from 65 countries around the world. This thrilling photograph shows the exact moment a pack of grey reef sharks catch and devour a parrotfish. “The Gauntlet” was taken underwater, late at night on the reefs of French Polynesia in the centre of the Pacific Ocean", Barnden explains“ As I descended, hundreds of sharks covered the bottom. This unlucky parrotfish flinched, and that tiny movement alerted the swarm of sharks. The mayhem hurtled straight towards me and I instinctively pressed the shutter; moments later all that remained was a rain of parrotfish scales in the darkness, and this photo on my camera.”

'The Gauntlet' Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019, British Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019 Richard Barnden

Barnden, 40, is originally from Brighton, England, but now lives on the small island of Palau, in Micronesia. Chair of the judges, Dr Alexander Mustard MBE, commented, “Photography is about preserving moments, and what an unforgettable instant this is. Using a wide angle lens, the photographer takes us into the full drama of the hunt, as a melee of grey reef sharks rise like a breaking wave to tear apart their prey, truly revealing the ocean’s wilder side.” Spanish photographer, Eduardo Acevedo from Tenerife, was named Marine Conservation Photographer of the Year 2019 for his photo showing a loggerhead turtle entangled in a discarded plastic fishing net. Acevedo says “The turtles come to the Canary Islands by crossing the Atlantic Ocean from the Caribbean and have to avoid many manmade dangers, like plastics, ropes and fishing nets. This individual was one of the lucky ones because we were able to free it and recover the net.” Judge Mustard added, “Plastic pollution and ghost fishing are ever increasing serious issues threatening the ocean, this sad image highlights both issues”. The Underwater Photographer of the Year competition also aims to promote new photographic talent. Korean Taeyup Kim was named as Up & Coming Underwater Photographer of the Year 2019, for a technically challenging image half in and half out of the water. “Paradise” shows healthy corals growing in front of a resort in French Polynesia. Kim explains “this photo was physically tough to shoot, holding the heavy camera exactly in this position while floating in the water”. Competition judge Martin Edge commented “A perfect under and over split. One of the best examples I have seen of this type of image for some time.”

The title of Most Promising British Underwater Photographer, 2019 went to Malcolm Nimmo from Plymouth in England. His image “Marine Compass” was taken while snorkelling in the Scilly Islands, in the UK. Nimmo explains “Maintaining both the surface features and subject illumination requires high strobe power settings and hence careful strobe positioning. Hopefully this image highlights the beautiful marine environments we are lucky to have around the UK.” Competition judge Peter Rowlands commented, “Composition, colour vibrancy and contrast combined with an unusual angle kept it rising in the rankings with each viewing.”

Meet the judges The UPY competition prides itself on having a panel of internationally renowned judges who get together and look at each and every image submitted into the competition.

Martin Edge Martin Edge grew up without any inclination towards diving or photography! But after moving to Dorset with his wife Sylvia in 1977, they both learnt to dive around Swanage, Weymouth and Portland. Soon after, in Menorca, Martin took his first underwater photographs. His desire to shoot pictures underwater grew into a passion bordering on an obsession! Frustrated by a lack of knowledge of camera equipment and how to best use it underwater, he set out to understand the 'mind’s eye' of those underwater photographers whose work he most admired. In the 1980's he participated in numerous underwater photography competitions, obtaining many awards from all over the world. He began to write articles on such a diverse range of subjects simply as a medium to get his work published. He (and everyone else) quickly identified that his passion and potential was to teach and develop other aspiring underwater photographers. Over the last 35 years he has done just that. Introduced, developed, motivated and mentored many hundreds of underwater photographers from all parts of the globe. Martin is considered to be one of the most influential teachers of underwater photography ever. In 2010 the fourth edition of his best selling book ‘The Underwater Photographer’ was published. This has taken the underwater world by storm and is considered to be the Bible on the topic. Martin is an Honorary Life Member of BSoUP.

The seventh wonder of the world is an easy overnighter from Namibia’s Zambezi lodges . . .

Could there be any cherries to top my superlative Zambezi sojourn - cruising down the emerald waterways spotting the abundant birdlife, and exploring the national parks with their herds of elephant and buffalo? I had been hopscotching between the Gondwana Collection’s three lodges in the Zambezi

Region in the far north-eastern corner of Namibia - Namushasha River Lodge on the Kwando River, Zambezi Mubala Lodge on the Zambezi River and Chobe River Camp on the Chobe River - and had been dazzled by Zambezi beauty.

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

55

H

ow could I possibly add anything more to Namushasha’s trip into Bwabwata National Park by boat and then overland by game-viewing vehicle, or the ultimate boat cruise on the Chobe, viewing wildlife from the comfort and safety of the boat? It was when I reluctantly decided that it must be time to leave that I overheard lodge staff confirming details for a tourist shuttle to Vic Falls. Later in the day, I met guests at supper who had just returned from their drive to Vic Falls. Someone was gently tapping me on the shoulder, telling me the fun was not yet over. There was no turning back. Visiting the seventh wonder of the world was on the agenda and, as I discovered, it was only 140km away from Chobe River Camp and the nearby Ngoma border post.

T

he route via Botswana and northern Zimbabwe traverses a series of national parks and conservation areas, and the slow speed limit of 80km/hour ensures that you have time to slow down for the herds of elephant along the way. “Drive slowly and keep your eyes open for animals,” the policeman advised as I entered into Zimbabwe, before waving me on with a smile.

I

could see the smoke before I arrived in the small and charming town of Vic Falls, with its curio shops, restaurants, craft markets and displays of well-made carvings. It hovered above the land in the distance and it took me a few moments to realize that it was ‘The Smoke That Thunders’ - Mosi-oa-tunya, Victoria Falls, with its spray rising into the air in clouds of mist. It is said that when Livingstone arrived in 1855 and cast eyes on the falls, he wrote: ‘Scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight,’ and named it Victoria Falls in honour of his queen.

A

nd, there is no better activity than to visit the falls themselves in the Victoria Falls National Park, walking to the various viewpoints, wearing - if the water is high - one of their bright yellow raincoats, available for hire. I was soon soaked and spellbound, as I ran through the rainforest avoiding waterfall showers, enchanted by the bushbuck and vervet monkeys, and laughing at the sheer power and beauty of the Zambezi River thundering down the gorge in its watery celebration, with an energy that is infectious.

O

ut of the park, street sellers tried to sell me billiondollar Zimbabwean notes, mementos from the past that are now called ‘crazy money’ and are tourist souvenirs. With a bridge pass from the border office, I walked across the bridge that spans the Zambezi River between Zimbabwe and Zambia looking down into the gorge way below and back to the falls. “Three, two, one, bungeeeeeee. . . ,” the bungee instructors shouted to the brave person about to leap from the bridge – for fun.

I

got my courage up and joined the historic bridge tour, first for the amusing and informative talk and then, attached with a safety line clipped to the railing, for the tour along the walkway under the bridge. The bridge that is more than a century old was a huge engineering feat of its time, and part of Cecil Rhodes’s dream for the Cape

56

to Cairo railway to link the continent. The bridge was constructed in England, shipped to Mozambique and then transported by rail. Our guide, Simba Masusela, acting the part of the bridge engineer Georges Imbault, informed us: “The bungee crew now make more money throwing people off my bridge than the cars travelling over it.” On 1 April 1905, the two sides of the bridge were joined together. “The local chief said that it must be the finger of god that kept it together, but actually it was thirty construction workers and three hundred local labourers. It took 25 weeks. The workers suffered from black water fever, malaria and dysentery – and the blazing tropical sun. They lost two lives, but in the end the bridge was the highest in the world, and comprised 1868 tons of steel.” It was officially opened on 12 Sept 1905 and it is still in good condition 114 years later.

A

lways keen to try the local food of the country I’m visiting, I skipped the choice of restaurants that line Livingstone Way, offering a variety of continental food, and joined former river guide Tertrex Tshuma, at a local hangout. As we scooped up the relish with thick white ‘sadza’ - maizemeal porridge - in true African fashion, I heard about his river experiences. Tertrex, aka ‘Old Man River’, was one of the first Shearwater river guides. His nickname is apt. With ten years of river guiding experience, he is familiar with every bend and rapid in the river. The rapids’ names are descriptive, like Boiling Pot, Devil’s Toilet Bowl, Stairway to Heaven, Gnashing Jaws of death, The Washing Machine, The Terminator, Judgement Day, Oblivion and The Last Straw. Tertrex told me that he always regarded the river - and the Zambezi river god Nyaminyami - as his friend. “The story of the river god

snake that has been passed down through the generations is that if it doesn’t want you there, it will let you know. However, it looks after people, trees and animals.” He described the old custom of throwing a coin into the river and giving thanks to Nyaminyami. “If you go to the falls, you need to throw in a ten or twenty cent piece. Or, if you cross the bridge, take a coin and throw it in for good luck.”

L

ate afternoon meant that it was time for a sundowner at the 1904 Victoria Falls Hotel. A grand old dame from the past, the hotel retains the spirit of adventurers and the large gardens of colonial days gone by.

I

t had been a jam-packed day and I was happy to drive into Shearwater Explorers Village for the night. As darkness enveloped the town all activity stilled until the thundering of the falls became clearly audible, punctuated by the trumpeting of elephants.

T

he next day, I had a late and leisurely breakfast, thankful for the overnight stop which gave me more time to explore and the opportunity to partake in some of the activities this adventure-hub of Africa has to offer. Number one on my list was the much-anticipated Flight of Angels. Although a noisy activity, the fifteen-minute chopper ride above the falls is a grand opportunity to see the dramatic view from above. Awe-struck, I had barely taken in the breath-taking beauty before we were descending.

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

57

R

eturning from the chopper launchpad, I drove along Zambezi Road, to the thousand-year-old baobab tree, ‘The Big Tree’, which I heard had in the late 1800s sheltered traders, missionaries, hunters and fortune seekers, who camped at the tree while waiting for the water level in the river to drop. I was also told that people once danced for rain here to end the drought. Nearing the baobab, I paused for kudu and an elephant bull on the roadside, a reminder that Vic Falls is still part of wild Africa, surrounded by national parks. Back in town, just a street away, a family of warthogs ran along the pavement, and locals mentioned that at night you had to watch out for the elephant and buffalo that came through the village to graze the green grass.

M

y last stop was the indoor craft market, next to the N1 Lodge, where I was lured in by the bright fabrics and the friendliness of the Zimbabwean people to chat, share smiles - the currency of travel - and to choose colourful gifts for friends.

W

ell, it was nearly the last stop. I found that I couldn’t leave just yet. Tertrex’s words kept circling around my head. I hadn’t paid my respects to Nyaminyami. I made one last loop to the Zambezi and while fellow travellers weren’t looking, I took the moment to throw my coin down into the gurgling river below with a silent ‘thank you’ and prayer to Nyaminyami to keep the good luck flowing. Somewhere in the depths, I felt it was well-received.

I

t was with a wide smile that I drove back, through the Chobe National Park, reaching the Namibian border post as the sun was dipping in the sky to arrive at Chobe River Camp in time for supper. A fire was burning in the lapa where guests gathered for the meal. The stars twinkled, the sound of zebras gathering for migration wafted through the air. It was with a strong feeling of contentment that I wandered back to my tented room on the Chobe riverbank at the end of the meal to a chorus of frogs. Images of the waterfall, rainbows and elephants flowed in and out my thoughts before I drifted peacefully to sleep - with the blessings of the river god. by Ron Swilling

Midgard: An Hour From Escape Words by Martha Mukaiwa Photographs by O&L Leisure & Martha Mukaiwa

F

or the weary city soul and the fatigued foreign flier, Midgard Country Estate may seem a mirage. A verdant and intense hallucination springing urgently to life beyond 89 kms of dirt road snaking wildly from the Namibian capital. The journey, if you’re lucky enough to make it, is ever changing. Once the delight of a flowery yellow carpet fringing an ostensibly endless gravel river, later a squat avenue of low trees heavy with flitting weaver’s nests, the road to this popular country estate is a bumpy one, any ache of which dissolves into distraction. “Sorry, Miss. There’s no radio.” The words from the Midgard driver sent to acquire me from my lodgings in Windhoek are less devastating than one may think. Instead, we swop the barrage of pop hits and shrill jingles to tune into the sights and sounds of the land the Lord made in a fit of a flair. The impossibly blue skies dotted with cotton white clouds, the gaggle of speckled guineafowl darting swiftly into the brush and the troops of unbothered baboons, bored beyond belief at the sight of yet another human in their noisy contraption hurrying to who knows where. And then we’re there. It’s been an hour and a half one barely feels go by and, abruptly, we are through a gate, down a short road, past some stables, astride a rustic country petrol station and staring up at an imposing entrance seemingly bellowing the estate’s name… Midgard. It’s a name you’ll come to love.

63

Once you’ve downed a complimentary glass of refreshment, had your luggage loaded into a sparkling white golf cart and driven slowly through the picturesque country village style estate where one of 46 luxurious rooms await. As a more seasoned Midgard visitor, I’ve experienced it all. The pleasure of living poolside and taking twenty quick strides before plunging into one of two sparkling pools. The quiet indulgence of being tucked a little away and unhurriedly scanning the estate from a large private balcony. The hushed comradery of the festive family rooms, a sweet hop and a skip from the dining room and the ever friendly bar. There isn’t a bad corner. And while the rooms are a sanctuary of large beds, soft sheets, rain showers and sumptuous baroque accents and embellishments, it isn’t long before the beauty of the estate calls, echoing from its nest amidst the Otjihavera mountains. With days suddenly feeling much longer and languid, the more energetic traveller will meet the mountains head on, taking advantage of Midgard’s myriad hiking and 4x4 trails extending deep into the quiet of the surrounding bush where all thoughts of luxury, humanity and the world are soon forgotten replaced by feelings of adventure, spirituality and being sole survivors. At the estate, all but abandoned by adventurers, my fantasy is a little different. Exiting my room and heading out into the lush country garden where cordial maintenance workers quietly nip, tuck and manicure the estate into the shining specimen of immaculate that it is, I make my way down some stone steps where a sprinkler gifts drops of water to the bright grass as wind rustles through the estate’s many trees reflected in the unbelievably blue pools. This in itself is a privilege. In a country often plagued by drought, the tickle of emerald grass underfoot and the soul-soothing weightlessness of a head ducked under gallons of water is a blessing to be noted, appreciated and savoured. Paths lead the way. Though the sheer scope of Midgard’s 12 000 hectares may intimidate and inspire awe, one need only follow the map etched into the rich, sprawling grounds to happen upon the estate’s eccentricities.

MAY 2019 | FLAMINGO

The retro kegelbahn (bowling alley) where games are played relatively rowdy and with the reward of Jaegermeister a short walk past the children’s playground and a larger than life chessboard in the lower garden. The vintage car museum proud in its display of a 1972 Ford Thunderbird and a bright red Chevrolet beyond a mighty golden gong about halfway to the newly renovated Trans Namib train carriages where the budget traveller may lay their head, dance around a bonfire and marvel at the expanse of stars twinkling in the balmy late summer night sky. While it’s rare to be completely alone on the estate, for a moment, I am its only visible occupant. The lady of my very own country manor, pausing to photograph African violets and every colour roses as an array of butterflies dip and dive between Midgard’s fragrant flowerbeds and great poolside trees whisper ancient secrets overhead. Midgard has many moods. By morning it is abuzz with guests ambling towards the delicious breakfast buffet. In the afternoon the day is punctuated by tennis balls whizzing through the air, splashes from the pool or the sound of guests giddily returned from various outdoor explorations and, as the light leaks, I make my way to the entrance for a private adventure. A late afternoon safari that spirits me away from the estate and into the wild. In Midgard’s Hans Grimm Wild Park, the world is a land before time. Blue and black wildebeest disperse in clouds of dust at the sound of the approaching open air vehicle, white-tailed kudus race skittish through some trees, baboons scamper and call and a lone and haughty ostrich nips at insects as if Ngambui, my guide, and I are utterly invisible. “They’re called hartebeest because their horns are shaped like a heart.” Ngambui is a fountain of wisdom. He pours me generous gulps of gin and tonic, expounds on the difference between blue and black wildebeest and eventually alights on the dry Swakop river where the shape of big, dry boulders recall the much needed rushing of water. The best is yet to come.

A majestic moment when all of a sudden we are amidst a tower of giraffes. More than nine ethereal and elegant creatures mere metres from our car. The giraffes are bigger than imagination but just as regal and they pay us little mind as they munch their early dinner, quietly biting leaves off trees before pushing on into the distance. The sun begins to set. The light changes, the air cools and, as it does, we make our way to a hill top where we join various guests for a literal and visual feast of biltong, wine and majestic, bird-riven 360 views - a sight of reverence, wonder and ‘Lion King’ quotes. “Everything the light touches is our kingdom…” We are queens and kings. And from our perch at the very top of the world, we watch the sun duck below the mountains before heading back to the estate where Carl’s Dining Room and Terrace’s twinkling chandeliers and velvety chairs usher us back to plush reality. A place where Chef Philip Tjiveze and his team present a lavish buffet including succulent game steaks elevated by crisp, fresh vegetables as well as a selection of artisanal pastes and preserves made with produce straight from the estate’s garden. It’s been a perfect day.

Epacha Game Lodge & Spa – Best Of Both Worlds Epacha Game Lodge & Spa is a mere 60 kilometres from the entrance to the legendary Etosha National Park, so staying here offers you a taste of both wild and tame. Words by Anne Schauffer Photographs supplied

W

hen Epacha Game Lodge & Spa opened in 2001, it was considered a Namibian pioneer – the very first lodge to combine the experience of both wildlife & wellness in their Mystique Spa. Such an intoxicating combination. Today, Epacha still offers that perfect balance between wild and wonderful, but for guests from way back then, rest assured, Epacha Lodge has been refurbished to give it a fresh and contemporary look and feel. With superior hospitality at its heart, Epacha is focused on ensuring your stay in their corner of Namibia, is as memorable as they can make it. Epacha Game Lodge & Spa perches on top of the hills of the 13,000 ha Epacha Private Game Reserve, bordering the main road to Etosha National Park. Of course guests enjoy the privilege of entering this magnificent national Park regularly, but in addition, Epacha offers a wide variety of activities on its own private game reserve. From the comfort of a library, cognac and cigar room, to a well-appointed wine cellar beneath the restaurant, you won’t be short of those little luxuries that elevate a game lodge to a luxurious experience.

Laze by the glorious swimming pool and pool bar, sipping G&Ts…enjoy the free Wi-Fi offered to guests…and then, perhaps a few restorative treatments at the soothing, calming Mystique Spa? Accommodation at Epacha Lodge & Spa consists of 18 spacious, luxury chalets strung out along the hills surrounding the main building, each with views overlooking the private game reserve. You’ll love the roomy bathrooms with a view, an insideoutside shower, a bath in which to laze, and an outside shower for those wonderfully warm days. Every chalet has a large balcony on which to sit and gaze out over the reserve, while inside, you’ll enjoy the chill of the air conditioning, and the handiness of the mini-bar, safe, coffee and tea-making facilities. Epacha has two other types of accommodation, the Royal Impala Private Villa set apart from the other chalets, ideal for a large group or family; or, if you’re more adventurous, you’ll love the Eagle Tented Lodge. If you’re looking for that unique Namibian holiday which combines wildlife with a pampered life, Epacha Lodge & Spa has a luxury room waiting just for you.

Brot: “Furniture for Food” Project

General Motors ARĪV Electric Bicycles: Meld and Merge

Brot, is a beautiful light that also grows food. It’s furniture for food, just like its name, Brot means sprout in Catalan, and this lamp is also a germinator. Don’t worry, it sounds horrible, but it doesn’t have anything to do with germs, it’s just a device to grow sprouts. Brot is a unique project that wants to give you a new way in understanding food and furniture. It’s a lamp that provides a warm and cozy environment, yet it’s also a platform to grow your own food. Designed by Caterina Vianna and Ferran Gesa, Brot consists of two elements made of terracotta and screen. Terracotta is the vessel that holds a stainless steel tray with seeds, while the screen redirects lights to the sprouts and the room. At the center, there’s a circular opening that allows light to pass through, creating a defined light spot bellow it. These elements create a dialogue between food and furniture; it responds to society's growing concern in following a healthier lifestyle.

ARĪV is the latest electric bikes brand from General Motors; it offers two innovative models of integrated and connected eBikes: Meld and Merge. The Meld is a compact eBike for your daily ride while The Merge is a folding eBike. First launched in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands, ARĪV eBikes have received great responses from the market. Battery powered ebikes are very popular on those markets, ARĪV was launched and accepting orders right away. The company promises it’ll begin shipping to customers in Q2 of 2019. GM sets the same automotive high standards to its eBikes. Thanks to GM’s extensive experience with electric vehicle motor software and controls, they can apply the same high quality standards to ARĪV eBikes, which were designed and built from the ground up.

Trek Bontrager WaveCel Helmet Protects Your Brain Against Impacts

Massdrop ALT High-Profile Mechanical Keyboard with Cool RGB Backlighting

Bontrager x WaveCel Helmet has been designed to revolutionize helmet safety technology. WaveCel offers the biggest advancement in protection against cycling concussions; we only have one brain, it’s worth protecting. Standard foam helmets are designed to protect your head against direct impacts; this is 30 years of accepted safety standards, however, there are many different scenarios that might happen. WaveCel takes account of how most cycling accidents happen in the real world; it can be twists, turns, or angled impacts, therefore, it is aimed to prevent concussions caused by common cycling accidents, not just direct impacts. Bontrager x WaveCel Helmet from Trek offers 48 times more effective protection than standard foam helmets. The WaveCell is a collapsible cellular structure that lines the inside of the helmet; it works just like a crumple zone that absorbs force of an impact before it reaches your head. These cells flex to reduce initial frictional forces, then they crumple just like a car bumper upon impact. Finally, WaveCel glides to move energy away from your head. All Wavecel helmets are designed and engineered to fit and feel great; they can be adjusted with a single Boa dial and that includes fit pads.

Massdrop ALT High-Profile Mechanical Keyboard is ergonomically crafted precisely to have a 6-degree angle to deliver a natural feel when you typing on this keyboard. Just like the original ALT, but this time, this keyboard is designed with a tall CNC-aluminum case that covers those switches. This compact keyboard wastes no space; it doesn’t have function keys but it still has a full set of arrows and numerals. Designed with Kaihua switch sockets, it allows you to swap switches when you need it, no soldering required. This mechanical keyboard from Massdrop is also fully programmable via QMK; you can assign different macros or custom keybinds to every key to help you work more easily with this keyboard. Massdrop ALT High-Profile Mechanical Keyboard has dual USB-C connectors, customizable RGB backlighting, and underlighting. You can choose to set it in a single colour of light or a cool rainbow wave pattern, in order to enhance the back-lighting; this keyboard is also equipped with shine-through doubleshot PBT keycaps. There are millions of different colours for every key, feel free to match your setup. Since these LEDs operate at a frequency of 100Hz, you don’t have to worry about visible flicker.

ITB allowed NWR to present its latest offering at the world's largest fair in addition to affording it with a platform to gain insight at the emerging trends within the tourism industry. The fair was from 6 – 10 March 2019. This year, NWR joined over 30 other Namibian companies including the Honourable Minister of Environment and Tourism, Pohamba Shifeta in showcasing what Namibia has to offer. “The Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) who are responsible for marketing Namibia as a travel destination must be commended for the excellent work, and they did this year. They by far exceeded all our expectations and ensured that we could leave our markâ€?, said Mrs Zelna Hengari, NWR Managing Director.

Mrs Hengari was of the view that, “since Germany contributes to the bulk of European travellers to Namibia. Hosea Kutako International Airport (HKIA) undergoes revamp From limited immigration checkpoints, to long queues and only two baggage carousels, NAC and the Government in December 2018 decided to roll out a HKIA upgrading Project currently estimated to be worth N$ 245 Million. N$95.2 million of this amount will come from NAC own resources while the balance will be provided by the shareholder. The upgrading project, to start in 2019, will include the revamp and modernizing of the check-in and departure halls, security screening point, arrivals hall and the luggage handling areas. Installation of a CCTV and intrusion detection system at HKIA has already commenced. The upgrade will also include the upgrading to introduce latest advance technologies and software systems related to self-check ins and screening for both passengers and luggage.

CONTACT DETAILS Namibia Airports Company 5th Floor, Sanlam Centre, Independence Avenue, Windhoek PO Box 23061, Windhoek, Namibia Tel: +264 (0) 61 295 5000 Fax: +264 (0) 61 295 5022 E-mail: communications@airports.com.na Website: www.airports.com.na Facebook: Namibia Airports Company Limited

The upgrade work will have minimal effect on the current airport operations, which will continue as usual. The old terminal, known as Terminal One, currently only used for VIP movements, will also form part of the work to be done to have a dedicated international departure and arrival Terminal as well as a Domestic departure and arrival Terminal. This will go a long way to make HKIA as one of the advanced airport in our Region. Congestion at HKIA is not only causing discomfort to the passengers but also creating a number of issues pertaining to the compliance of aviation regulations, especially due to prevalent mixing of screened and unscreened passengers at certain intervals of the day. Enjoy your flights with us at HKIA!
