CASE STUDY Heat Reflective Paint

01 Project Summary

During mid 2010, CFSGAM organised to have heat reflective paint applied to half the roof of the Altona Gate shopping centre in an effort to reduce overall power consumption of the centre.

02 The Solution

After works were completed to apply the new paint at Altona Gate shopping centre, the AEP* monitoring system was used to generate comparisons of power consumption for the site.

-$435 p.mth

During the month of January 2011 against January 2010 as the average temperatures between these months only differed by 1.3%. This first graph shows temperatures between the two months are very similar January 2010 (Avg 23.5°C) and January 2011 (Avg 23.2°C) therefore power consumption data is comparable between these. *AEP - Asset Efficiency Performance

03 Project Outcomes

Airmaster also placed a temperature sensor inside the roof space so outside air temperature data from the AEP monitoring system can be compared against it. The following graph demonstrates that as the temperature increases the roof temperature does not increase at the same rate.

As verification of the proposed savings data recorded using the AEP system can be compared. The following data acquired from the AEP system is the comparison of the total centre power before and after the paint was applied 1 year apart.

06 Conclusions

From this it can be noted that the average daily power consumption of January this year has dramatically reduced from last year by about 28% even though the outside temperatures have stayed around the same. This could be due to a number of power reduction initiatives but it does include the addition of the heat reflective roof paint.
