Vienatvės kelias

Henriko Čerapo tapyba ir Lietuvos žemė mano sąmonėje yra taip glaudžiai susijusios, kad žiūrėdamas į vieną iš jų, negaliu nesigėrėti kita. Šitaip mąstydamas, klausiu savęs, ar ši tapyba jaudintų mane, jei pats nebūčiau susipažinęs su dailininką įkvėpusia žeme?

Prieš rašant apie šią tapybą, reikia užduoti klausimą. Tai klausimas be atsakymo. Nei kūrinio tiesa, nei jo aiškumas negali būti atskleisti. Visi žino, kad kūrinio tiesos dalelė paslėpta kiekvieno jį kontempliuojančiojo širdyje.

Kai maždaug prieš dvidešimt metų svečiavausi Vilniuje, visi mano sutikti dailininkai turėjo bendrą bruožą – stiprų prisirišimą prie savo kultūros ir žemės. Aš jiems to pavydėjau. Šį prisirišimą liudijo jų menas. Taigi, nuojauta, atvedusi mane iki šios minties, pasitvirtino.

Henriko Čerapo tapyba taip pat apie tai liudijo. Mano šviesiam, idealizuotam atrastos vietos suvokimui jo potėpių skurdumas, brutalumas, net tamsa buvo būtini. Kaip dailininkas, aš supratau ir vienintelį jo tapybos objektą – žemę. Aš taip pat supratau ir šios tapybos niūrų radikalumą.

Sigito Gedos eilėraštis, man regis, nušviečia tokio pasirinkimo priežastis. Tam, kuris turi sąlytį su žeme, sako poetas, savaime persiduoda protėvių dvasia.

Kadangi nėra žmogaus, kuriam nebūtų būdingas absoliuto pojūtis, gamta iš tiesų išlieka – anapus to, kas yra matoma, – neišsenkamas jam siunčiamų signalų šaltinis. Dailininkas visa tai suvokia intuityviai. Štai kodėl jis jaučiasi esąs toks artimas žemei ir ją dirbančiam žmogui.

Estų kompozitorius Veljo Tormisas savo muzikiniame kūrinyje puikiai parodė, kokią įtaką muzikai turi gimtoji kalba. Kalbant apie dailę, neperdedant, galima teigti, kad tokią pat įtaką gimtoji žemė daro ir dailininkams.

Kelias Kadangi erdvė visada suvokiama atsižvelgiant į dydį ir kryptį, vaizdo kompozicija visada priklauso nuo šio suvokimo, nepaisant jos supaprastinimo laipsnio. Apie tai byloja nuolatinis dailininkų dėmesys peizažui. „Peizažą“ reikia suprasti kaip dailininko atliekamą perkėlimą į tapybos erdvę to, ką jis mato 1

realioje erdvėje: medį, šviesą, žemę, namą. Tačiau jo pasirinkta tema tėra tik dingstis, nes regėjimui ir atminčiai reikia atramos taško.

Turime suprasti, kad dailininkas aplinkinį pasaulį stebi ne tam, kad pavaizduotų jį tokį, kokį mato. Dailininkas stebi tarp daiktų egzistuojantį ryšį. Pavyzdžiui, čia medis, ten kalnai, kaip vaizduoja tradicinis kinų dailininkas. Arba – centre valstietis, aplinkui laukai, kaip Malevičius. Žiūrėdami į pasaulį dailininko akimis, už lygumos ar lauko pastebime erdvę, kuri horizontaliai sujungia, o vertikaliai – atitolina. Arba, žiūrėdami į kalnus ar girią, matome tai, kas horizontaliai skiria, o vertikaliai sujungia. Kalnas, kaip ir medis, priartina prie dangaus.

Henrikas Čerapas savo didelėse, niūriose kompozicijose savitai parodo, kaip žemė susilieja su horizontu, o laukas matomas vertikalus tarsi uolos skardis.

Pamenu vieną Povilo Ričardo Vaitiekūno paveikslą. Lauku žengia žmogus, slegiamas nematomos naštos. Šiame paveiksle nematomo svorio jėga, materializuota teptuko potėpiais, tikroviškai deformuoja einantį personažą. Čerapo darbuose taip pat juntama svorio jėga, bet ji vaizduojama kitaip. Sluoksniuodamas įvairius rudus, beveik juodus atspalvius, jis leidžia pamatyti visišką niūrumą, tamsą po kojomis, o priekyje – tarsi vaizdą uždengianti siena. Šiuose didelio formato paveiksluose kiekvienu sprendimu – spalva, kompozicija, formatu, atlikimu jis siekia parodyti ryšį tarp vietos ir gyvenimo patirties, tarp erdvės ir atminties.

O mažuose paveiksluose, kadangi jų žodynas ribotas, mes tą ryšį matome, galima sakyti, užmerktomis akimis, čia ir slypi jų grožis.

Tamsa Šiuo metu Čerapo kūryboje vyksta radikalus pokytis. Nebeliko vieno unikalaus vaizdo, sukoncentravusio visa, kas buvo skirta pamatyti ir suvokti.

Nelengva suprasti šį sprendimą. Gali būti, kad kurdamas vienumoje savo studijoje, ko reikalauja kūryba, jis staiga pajuto visišką savo darbo nereikalingumą. Galbūt apėmė abejonės.

Išties, tapyba yra vaizduotės kūrinys, bet taip pat tai yra veiksmas, kurį reikia atlikti rankomis. Čia nenuslėpsi nei negrabumo, kuris yra santykinis, nei savo paties galimybių ribotumo, kuris yra absoliutus. Kitos raiškos priemonės leidžia tai padaryti, bet ne tapyba. Nes rankų darbas turi apribojimą: reikia daryti nedaug, bet meistriškai. Dailininko meistriškumą nusako šis kredo: mažai yra pakankamai.

Paveikslo grožis ar bjaurumas kyla iš čia: jis galėjo būti nutapytas tik kartą, vieno asmens ir būtent taip, kaip buvo nutapytas.

Visiškai priešingai, Henrikas Čerapas, ėmęsis naujų formalių sprendimų, regis, nusprendė eiti kitu keliu. Tai aiškiai parodo jo paveikslams duotas pavadinimas Les Exercices (pratybos, eksperimentai). Čia veiksmas ne tik kartojamas daug kartų, bet, atsižvelgiant į pasirinktą formatą, kartojamas iki jėgų netekimo. Nesunku suprasti, kad su tokia programa niekada nebus užbaigto vaizdo, nes vaizduotė tarsi sąmoningai sustabdoma. Štai kodėl bandoma vis iš naujo.

Kartodamas vienintelį judesį – iš viršaus į apačią, iš kairės į dešinę, supaprastintą kaip nebylus raštas, menininkas į savo paveikslus įveda laiko dimensiją, kurios anksčiau nebuvo. Šitaip dėmesio centre atsiduria nauja netikėta tema: žmogus, kuris tapo.

Parodoje stebint jo didelius dabartinius paveikslus, man šmėstelėjo mintis, kad po kūrimo laikotarpio atėjo griovimo laikotarpis. Dailininko žodžiai, atrodo, patvirtino šią mano hipotezę. Požiūrio pokytis radikalus. Tapyba, kaip žvilgsnio į pasaulį materializacija, tampa tapyba, kaip buvimo pasaulyje pasitikrinimu.

Atsisakydamas to, ką taip sunkiai kūrė, dailininkas tarsi leidžiasi vedamas ten, kur nenori eiti.

Ne aukštyn, bet žemyn, labai žemai, niekio link. Šis tiesos poreikis neapsaugo nuo nusivylimo. Sutikti viską prarasti yra rizikinga. Tai tolygu visiškos nakties patirties priėmimui.

O dabar grižtu prie tylos, prie apsisprendimo, kuriuos minėjau anksčiau. Dabar aš čia matau kūrybinio kelio nuoseklumą. Kai sėkmės nebuvimas nereiškia nesėkmės, bet yra teisingos pozicijos ženklas. Tai suvokti – tai ruoštis aukštesnio lygio pažinimui. „Gerti. Melstis. Melstis. Gerti“, – sakoma eilėraštyje.

Svorio jėga, bet taip pat ir grakštumas.

Le chemin solitaire

La peinture de Henrikas Čerapas et la terre de Lituanie sont dans mon esprit si intimement liées qu’il m’est impossible de regarder l’une sans contempler l’autre. Cette contemplation intérieure me mène à une interrogation : cette peinture me toucherait-elle autant si je ne connaissais pas par expérience la terre qui l’a inspirée ?

Avant d’écrire sur cette peinture la question doit d’être posée. Elle est sans réponse. La vérité de l’œuvre ne peut être démontrée, ni sa transparence. Chacun sait qu’une parcelle de sa vérité est cachée dans le cœur de celui qui la contemple.

Lorsque je séjournais à Vilnius, il y a une vingtaine d’années, les peintres que je rencontrais avaient en commun un attachement profond à leur culture, à leur terre. Je les enviais pour cela. Leur art témoignait de cet enracinement. Le pressentiment qui m’avait conduit jusqu’ici se voyait ainsi confirmé.

La peinture de Henrikas Čerapas en était un exemple. La pauvreté, la brutalité, l’obscurité même, étaient des contrepoints nécessaires à la perception lumineuse et sans doute idéalisée que j’avais du lieu que je découvrais. Comme peintre je comprenais l’unique objet de sa peinture, la terre. Je comprenais également sa sombre radicalité.

Un poème de Sigitas Geda pourrait nous éclairer sur les raisons de ce choix. A celui qui demeure au contact de la terre, nous dit le poète, l’esprit des ancêtres se transmet de manière invisible.

Puisqu’il n’y a pas d’homme ici bas qui ne possède en lui le sens de l’absolu, la nature demeure une réserve inépuisable de rappels et de signes qui lui sont adressés. Le peintre perçoit cela intuitivement, c’est pourquoi il se sent proche de la terre, et aussi de celui qui l’a travaille.

Un compositeur balte, Veljo Tormis, a bien mis en valeur dans son œuvre musicale l’influence que la langue d’origine exerce sur la musique. Pour la peinture je pense qu’il n’est pas exagéré d’affirmer que la terre natale exerce sur les peintres une même empreinte.

Le chemin Parce que l’espace se perçoit toujours par rapport à une dimension et une orientation, la composition d’une image, quel que soit son degré de simplification, demeure dépendante de cette perception. L’intérêt des peintres pour le paysage en témoigne.

Par « Paysage » 1, on entend que le peintre transpose dans l’espace pictural ce qu’il voit dans l’espace réel : l’arbre, la lumière, la terre, la maison. Le sujet qu’il choisit n’est ici pourtant qu’un support, parce que la vision et la mémoire ont besoin d’un point d’appui.

Il faut bien comprendre que le peintre n’observe pas le monde autour de lui pour le représenter tel qu’il le voit avec les yeux. Le peintre contemple dans le monde la relation qui existe entre les choses. Par exemple, ici l’arbre, là la montagne, comme le fait un peintre traditionnel chinois, ou encore au centre le paysan, autour les champs, comme chez Malevitch.

Regarder le monde avec les yeux du peintre c’est ainsi percevoir au-delà de la plaine, ou du champ, l’étendue qui horizontalement relie et verticalement éloigne, ou encore, regardant la montagne, ou la forêt, ce qui horizontalement sépare, et verticalement unit. La montagne comme l’arbre rapprochent du ciel.

A contrario avec ses grandes compositions obscures Henrikas Čerapas semble dire tout autre chose. Lorsque la terre se confond avec l’horizon le champ se regarde à la verticale comme une falaise.

Un tableau de Povilas Ričardas Vaitiekūnas me revient ici en mémoire. Un homme traverse un champ, comme écrasé d’un poids invisible. Dans cette peinture la pesanteur, matérialisée par la touche du pinceau, déforme réellement le personnage qui va. Chez Čerapas la pesanteur est aussi perceptible, mais figurée d’une autre manière. Par la superposition des couleurs brunes, presque noires, il nous donne à voir toute l’obscurité qui est à ses pieds, mais frontalement comme un mur. Dans ces grandes peintures, le format, la couleur, la composition, l’exécution, chacune des décisions vise à faire apparaître le lien qui existe entre un lieu et un vécu, un espace et une mémoire. Et dans les petits formats, parce que leur vocabulaire est réduit au minimum, on peut pour ainsi dire le voir les yeux fermés.

L’obscurité A ce moment de son parcours un changement radical intervient pourtant. L’image unique qui concentrait en elle tout ce qu’il y avait à voir et à savoir est écartée.

Cette décision est difficile à comprendre. Il se peut que, dans l’isolement imposé par son travail le peintre ait perçu soudain la parfaite inutilité de ce qu’il accomplit dans son atelier.

L’acte de peindre est un acte d’imagination certes mais un acte qu’il faut accomplir avec ses mains. C’est-à-dire qu’il ne permet de dissimuler ni sa maladresse, qui est relative, ni ses propres limites qui sont absolues. D’autres moyens d’expression peuvent faire cela, pas la peinture. Or travailler avec ses mains implique une contrainte, il faut faire peu mais avec maîtrise. Tout l’art du peintre tient dans ce credo : peu est assez.

Toute la beauté, ou la laideur, du tableau vient de là : il ne peut avoir été peint qu’une fois, par un seul, et de la seule façon dont il a été peint.

Le terme «Paysage» définit à mon sens toute la peinture de Henrikas Čerapas.

Par des nouvelles décisions formelles Henrikas Čerapas semble affirmer le contraire. Le titre qu’il a donné à ses tableaux, Exercices, indique clairement que non seulement l’exécution doit être répétée encore et encore, mais aussi, compte tenu des formats choisis, jusqu’à la limite de ses forces. Dans ce programme de travail l’image achevée ne peut jamais être agréé eparce que l’imagination reste en avant d’elle-même. Voilà pourquoi l’expérience doit être toujours recommencée.

Cependant avec la répétition du même geste, de haut en bas, de gauche à droite, décliné comme une écriture muette, l’artiste introduit dans ses tableaux une dimension temporelle qui n’existait pas auparavant. Un nouveau sujet surgit, inattendu, au centre de l’image, l’homme qui peint.2 En face de ces nouvelles peintures, réunies par une exposition, l’idée m’est venue qu’après un temps de construction venait un temps de destruction. Les mots du peintre semblent confirmer cette hypothèse. Matérialisation du regard sur le monde, la peinture est devenue une vérification d’une condition d’être au monde.

Abandonnant ce qu’il a eu tant de mal à édifier, l’artiste semble maintenant accepter de se laisser mener là où il ne veut pas aller. Non plus monter, mais descendre, très bas, vers le rien. Une telle exigence de vérité ne met pas à l’abri du désespoir. Consentir à tout perdre est une décision solitaire. C’est accepter l’expérience d’une véritable nuit.

Et j’en reviens au silence, à la détermination, mentionnés précédemment. J’y vois maintenant la cohérence d’un cheminement. Où l’absence de réussite n’est pas le signe de l’échec mais le signe de la position juste. L’accepter prépare à une connaissance très élevée.

The Lonely Path

In my mind, painting of Henrikas Čerapas’ and the land of Lithuania are so closely intertwined that when looking at one of them, I cannot contemplate the other. In thinking this way I ask myself, would this painting excite me, if I hadn‘t seen the land that inspired the painter with my own eyes?

Before writing about painting there has to be a question asked. It is a question without an answer. Neither the truth of the oeuvre, nor its clarity can be revealed. Everyone knows that part of its truth lies in the heart of the one contemplating it.

When I visited Vilnius around twenty years ago, all of the painters I met had a common trait – a strong connection to their culture and land. I envied that. Their art was a witness of this connection. Thus, a hunch that brought me to this though was confirmed.

Painting of Henrikas Čerapas’ is exemplary of the latter. The poorness, brutality of his stroke, even the darkness was essential to my bright, idealized sense of a place. As a painter, I understood the only object of his painting – land. I also understood its sombre radicality.

I think the poem of Sigitas Geda enlights the reason behind this choice. The poet says that the one who has a connection to the land, intuitively inherits the spirit of its forefathers.

Since there is no man, who wouldn’t have a sense for the absolute, nature, beyond what is visible, indeed remains a never-ending source of reminders and signs. A painter apprehends it intuitively. That is why he feels so close to the land and the man cultivating it.

Musical compositions by an Estonian composer Veljo Tormis excellently demonstrate what significance native language has to music. Speaking about painting, I don’t think it is an exaggeration to say that native land has the same influence upon painters.

The Path Since space is always understood accordingly to magnitude and direction, the image’s composition, whatever the extent of its simplicity, always depends on this perception. It is determined by the painters’ perpetual concern for landscape.

A “landscape” 1 has to be understood as a painters’ shift, transference of that what he sees in reality – tree, light, land, house – to the space of a painting. Yet the subject of his choice is not merely a pretense, as perception and remembrance require a fulcrum.

We have to understand that a painter observes the surrounding world, but not to represent it as he sees it with his eyes. A painter examines the existing connection between objects. For example, here a tree, there mountains, as depicts a traditional Chinese painter. Or, a farmer at centre, fields around – like Malevich does.

Seeing the world through the eyes of a painter, we notice a space beyond a plain or a field which connects horizontally, but distances vertically. Yet when looking at mountains or a forest, we see that, what separates horizontally, connects vertically. A mountain, like a tree, brings us closer to the sky.

In his vast, obscure compositions, in his own way, Henrikas Čerapas shows how the land blends with the horizon, how a field can be perceived as a verticality of a cliff.

I remember a painting by Povilas Ričardas Vaitiekūnas. A man is stepping down the field, weighted down by an invisible burden. In this painting, the force of gravity, materialized by the strokes of a brush, realistically deform the moving character. In the works of Čerapas, gravity is also perceptable, yet the portrayal is completely different. By stratifying various brown, almost black nuances, he lets us see the absolute darkness under our feet, but forward, as if though, a wall. In these large format paintings, with each decision, colour, composition, format, depiction, he seeks to translate the contact between a place and a lived experience, between space and memory. Yet in smaller paintings, since their vocabulary is reduced to a minimum, we see that connection with closed eyes, herein is the beauty.

The Darkness At the moment, a radical change is happening in Čerapas creative process. A unique image, which concentrated everything, and was meant to be seen and understood, did not remain.

It is a difficult task to understand. It may be, that while creating at his studio in isolation, imposed by his work, he suddenly felt a complete unnecessity of his work. Might it be, he was taken aback by doubt.

Surely, painting is an act of imagination, yet as well an act, which has to be done by hand.

Herein, you cannot hide neither the stiffness, which is relative, nor the limitation of your own ability, which is absolute. Other means of expression let you do that, but not painting. Because work done by hands has a restriction – must do little, but with control. The art of the painter is defined by saying: little is enough.

From here, ascends the beauty or the ugliness of a painting: it could only have been painted once, solely by one person, and exactly the way it has been painted.

Henrikas Čerapas, while undertaking new formal decisions, has decided to do the contrary and go another way. It is distinctively shown by naming his paintings Les Exercices (exercises, experiments). Not only is an action repeated again and again, but, taking into account the format of his choice, it is repeated until the loss of his strength. It is not hard to understand that with such a program, there will never be a finished image, because imagination is consciously forced to a stop. That is why it is tried again.

By repeating a sole motion – up to down, left to right, simplified to a silent scripture, the artist introduces to its paintings a dimension of time, which was not there before. Consequently, a new theme comes into the centre of attention: a man who paints.2 While observing his present paintings at an exhibition, an idea came to me that after a time of creation, there comes a time of destruction. It seems that the painter’s words confirm my hypothesis. The change in perspective is radical. Painting as a materialization of an attitude towards the world becomes painting as verification of being in the world.

By abandoning that what he had so much trouble creating, the painter seemingly accepts that he is led where he does not want to go. No more going upwards, but going downwards, very low, towards nothingness. Such a demand for truth does not shelter from despair. Complying to lose everything is a risky decision. It is accepting an experience of a complete night.

Now I go back to the silence, to the previously mentioned determination. I see the coherence of this path. Lack of success is not a sign of failure, rather a sign of a right position. Acceptance prepares you for a higher knowledge.

“Drink. Pray. Pray. Drink”, is said in the poem.

Gravity, indeed, but likewise and grace.

Laikas grįžti į savo upę Agnės Kulbytės pokalbis su Henriku Čerapu

Agnė Kulbytė: Iš nieko niekas neatsiranda / Ex nihilo nihil fit. Tai, ką skelbia šis posakis, regis, galima aptikti kiekviename tapybos akte, – kaip priežasties-padarinio ryšį, kaip formos radimosi konstatavimą. Ar Aftermath galima vadinti radikaliai nauja – visų ankstesnių kūrybinių ieškojimų post-faze?

Henrikas Čerapas: Aftermath yra etapinis tarpsnis. Visus atsiradusius tapytus dalykus, kuriuos pavadini „kūrybiniais ieškojimais“, manyje padarė dažas – aliejiniai dažai ir vidinių paskatų apmąstymas. Tapybinė forma randasi iš dažo, bet ne iš žinojimo. Mano veiklą valdo kryptingas atsitiktinumas.

Tapybos materija ir tapybinis veiksmas, jo betarpiškas išgyvenimas yra svarbiausi mano formuojamo tapybinio pavidalo argumentai. Jau seniai keliu sau klausimą, kodėl darbas negalėtų būti baigtas tokioje neužbaigtoje būsenoje, kaip yra dabar, kodėl jam būtinai dar trūksta brūkšnių ir išsipildžiusios istorijos. Juk tai Niekis, niekada neįvyksianti svajonė susigrąžinti tai, kas prarasta.

Galiu konstatuoti, kad nesu tapybiniu požiūriu toks laisvas, kaip norėčiau, kad mano judesius varžo pernelyg komplikuotas santykis su mano pasakojama istorija. Tapybos tema man visada buvo mano gyvenimas, jį mąstydamas ir jį aptapydamas galbūt aš siekiu kažko, ko tam gyvenimui trūksta. Arba, jeigu konstatuočiau, kad mano gyvenimas-tapyba yra gryniausia rutina, trajektorinė inercija, tai galėčiau patikinti, kad šita serija darbų, kaip ir daugelis kitų, yra labiau inercijos rezultatas, bet ne „ieškojimų“ padarinys.

Tačiau yra dar kažkas, ko negaliu nusakyti. Tas kažkas yra tai, kas verčia mane, aš tai vykdau nesąmoningai, tarytum įdiegtą programą, tapybos darbe ieškoti, arba siekti, tvirtos struktūriškos formos, galingos jausminės išraiškos. Gali būti, kad tai ir yra tai, ką vadini „priežasties ir padarinio ryšiu“, ir ši konstanta yra aukštesnė valia, kuri mane veda. Aftermath galbūt ir yra vidinio susikaupimo ties šitos paslapties apmąstymu dalis ar fazė, arba gilesnė pradžia.

A. K.: Aptariant ankstesnę tapybos seriją Les Exercices man pačiai rūpėjo apibūdinti tapymo metodą – kaip susiklosto tapymo procesas, kaip vyksta įsimąstymas ir realizacija. O kaip vyko Aftermath?

H. Č.: Paviršutiniškai pažiūrėjus, tai gryna mechanika. Tu taikliai tai apibūdinai – egzistencinė mechanika. Gyvenu tartum iš inercijos, tapau iš inercijos, ir tai sudaro mano egzistencijos pagrindinius konstruktyvius parametrus, todėl juos integruoju į tapybinį veiksmą: inertiškas

požiūris, mechaniškas potėpis, jokių iliustracijų, jokio vizualaus pasakojimo. Tačiau tai tik paviršius. Drobės erdvė man yra atsivėrimo, išpažinties galimybė ir priemonė, dirbtuvėje lyg scenoje, niekam nematant, vyksta tikroji mano drama: pasekmė virsta priežastimi, priežastis – pasekme, ir būtent šitas determinizmas suteikia mano tapybai vidinės gelmės, be ko mano paveikslai būtų tiktai dekoracija.

Tapant Les Exercices manyje buvo daugiau automatizmo, situacija buvo kitokia, nes jaučiau nauja, buvau šviežias, įsimylėjęs, o dabar buvau prislėgtas savo darbo beprasmiškumo suvokimo. Dar ankstesnėje serijoje Live, kurią tapiau standartinio buto virtuvėje, atsidaviau matomo pro langą motyvo peizažinei kontempliacijai ir formos tyrinėjimui, ir tie parametrai buvo suprantami ir tinkami mažo formato tapybai. Tai buvo raktas – klasikinis peizažinis motyvas: dangus-žemė, viršus-apačia tapo konstruktyvine schema, abstrakčiomis kategorijomis. Dideliame formate tai ne iš karto veikė ir turėjau rūpesčių, kol įgavau pagreitį.

Jautrumas čia netiko, reikėjo atsainaus, įtikinant save, kad tai nieko nereiškia, atstumo, maksimalaus energetinio smūgio, netgi dekoratyvaus požiūrio į tapybos paviršių.

Live serijoje jau buvau ištyręs pozityvų tapybinės inercijos, mechaniško judesio poveikį, jis man tapo parankus. Atsitiktinumas tokio tapybos inertiško prisilietimo paviršių padaro kiekvieną kartą vis kitokį. Mane tai „užvedė“ ir serijoje Les Exercices aš tai įtvirtinau kaip metodą.

Bet tapydamas Aftermath jaučiau, kad artėju prie ribos, reikėjo visą savo būseną ir visą savo kelią apmąstyti, kam visa tai darau, gal todėl šios serijos darbai regisi įvairesni. Tai tartum „antras derlius“, arba „atolas“... – arba „pasekmės“.

A. K.: Įdomu, kad atskiros Aftermath serijos drobės tarsi ištrūksta iš sekos, cikliškumo.

Aftermath variacijas ir tiktų vadinti kaip muzikoje – dalimis (Parts). Jų grupavimą nulemia dažas, formatas, tapybinio tūrio sanklodos. Jos struktūruojasi laike – nuo įkvėpimo iki iškvėpimo, ir, matyt, tikrai, „jei siela būtų laisva, ji kartotų vis tą patį judesį“, – iki visiško „išsilaisvinimo“... Kartojimas, veiksmo ritmas įveda garsinį parametrą, „sukuria“ tembrinį skambesį. Visgi, tie tapybos tembrai, atrodytų, išeina ne iš spalvų skaidrumo, švytėjimo, bet iš kažko kita – „netapybiška“ tradicine prasme?

H. Č.: Tapybą „padaro“ dirbtuvė, ji sąlygoja užmojį ir, ko gero, netgi tematiką. Dabartinė mano dirbtuvė yra maža, jos erdvė neleidžia žvilgsniu aprėpti viso paveikslo, todėl tapyba sluoksniuojasi dalimis.

Visos tos dalys susiklosto iš tapybos procese išgyvenamų akistatų, o pats tapybos „garsas“, arba garsinis tapybos tembras užsirašo veiksmo metu, kada tapybinė materija, jos klampumas ir sunkis, spalvinio tono gylis ir visi brėžimo, lietimo, tepimo pėdsakai sukuria

plokštumoje tembrinę įtampą. Pati savaime spalva, kad ir pati gražiausia juoda, viso to dar neturi, ji yra tik dažas be patirties, dažas be egzistencinio turinio. Iš to, kaip ji užrašyta, kokioje ji ritminėje sekoje, konstruojasi paveikslo architektūra ir, be abejonės, garsinis tembras.

Aš vadovaujuosi tam tikra kompozicine logika. Tapyba gimsta iš jos kalbos savybių, iš medžiagos, o tapymo „mechanika“ manyje kyla iš kūno – jos prigimtis yra natūralus mano rankos ir viso kūno fizinis judesys. Potėpis arba brėžis gimsta iš šito judesio.

Mano vizijos išsirutulioja iš mano išgyvenamos būties peizažų, jų vaizdiniai persipina, atsitrenkia vienas į kitą, dauginasi – sunku būtų juos perteikti vienetiniame „unikaliame“ paveiksle, todėl serijiškumas iškyla kaip natūrali tapybinio proceso būtinybė: tapyba gimsta iš jos kalbos savybių.

A. K.: Abstrakcijų srautai, kuriuose atskiri paveikslai yra vienas kito refleksijos ir tęsiniai – tipiška šiuolaikinės tapybos raiška. Tokia slinktis vyksta ir nuo Dirvonų iki Megapaveikslų – iki Les Exercices ir Aftermath, regis, balansuojant tarp rankos ekspresijos ir mechaniško tapymo metodų. Ar Gerhardo Richterio tapyba kokiais nors aspektais čia galėtų būti aptariama kaip bendrumų turinti strategija?

H. Č.: Palikim Richterį Richteriui. Mano visai neadekvatūs materialiniai tapybos resursai, ką jau kalbėti apie civilizacinę-kultūrinę terpę, kurioje gyvenu ir dar tapau. Bet tai man suteikia jėgų ir savivertės jausmą, kitomis sąlygomis gal taip pat gaminčiau masinę produkciją rinkai.

Tradiciškai yra tapoma teptukais, ranka. Visi kiti išradimai yra tik vadinamosios racionalizacijos. Rankos protagonizmas yra ekspresija, parašas, kuris dažnai tampa atpažįstamu stiliumi, formos ir minties gravitacines galimybes apribojančia maniera. Richterio atveju, tapyba iš šitų varžtų išlaisvinama, pritaikius braukymo specialiu įnagiu veiksmą. Tapyba tampa mechanine produkcija, atveriamas kelias tapybinių situacijų atsitiktinumams, tapybinės materijos grožiui ir netikėtų efektų džiaugsmui. Tokiu būdu išryškinama konceptualioji tapybos būsena.

Man tapomas paviršius, tapybinė erdvė, visų pirma yra figūra, per kurią suvokiu manyje gimstantį egzistencinį provaizdį. Abstrakcija man yra greičiau poetinė kategorija. Tai metafora. O jos mėgsta daugintis ir viena kitą reflektuoti. Rankos mechanika tam palanki.

A. K.: Parodos Aftermath kolekcijoje išsiskiria paveikslas Latvių šokiai. Ar tai sąmoninga kultūrinė asociacija?

H. Č.: Gali būti, kad tai tapatumo asociacija.

A. K.: Aiškėja, kad Aftermath yra ir autobiografinio kelio peržvalga. Ir čia išnyra savi motyvai, susiję su gimtine, ir vyravę taip pat ankstesnėse kūrybos fazėse – geležinkelio bėgių ritmai, senojo Papilės kooperatyvo sandėlio siluetas, jo sijų struktūros, traukinio dundesys ir tamsa, pagelžkelio peizažo spalvos. Kaip dabar apibūdintumei šį atminties prilietimą vizualia prasme?

H. Č.: Taip, tikrai jaučiuosi priėjęs kažko pabaigą, laikas grįžti į savo upę. Pritapiau sandėlį paveikslų, ir kam? Kur juos dėti, niekam jų nereikia. Tikriausiai Aftermath yra ir šitos pasaulio neatitikusios patirties apmąstymas.

Visi tavo paminėti realybės fragmentai yra mano vidinio regėjimo sugerti autobiografiniai motyvai ir vaizdinių struktūriniai komponentai, tapybiniai „įrankiai“, perteikiantys žmogaus gyvenime netelpančią jo katastrofą ir egzistencinę tuštumą, į kurią jis pateko, kai buvo išdraskytas jo gyvenimo lizdas, nukirstas ryšys su gimtąja žeme, vietove, buvusia jo kosmosu, kai jis tapo klajūnu... Tai įvyko per vieną žmogaus gyvenimą, tai vyksta Dabar.

Aš kalbu apie neįveikiamą neviltį, kurią noriu išreikšti, ir man pasirodė, kad „unikalus paveikslas“, čia turiu galvoje Dirvonus, kurių promotyvas yra konkretus peizažas vietos prasme – Papilė, neperteikia tos nevilties dydžio ir gylio, greičiau tą neviltį atmintyje mumifikuoja, nes ji laike išsiskleidžia fragmentiškai, atskirais, ir kas dar blogiau – „gražiais“ paveikslais. Tokiu būdu su ja, kaip ir realiame gyvenime, susigyvenama ir susitaikoma.

Aš noriu pasakyti, kad neviltis nesibaigė, kad jos mastas žmogiškojoje egzistencijoje yra neaprėpiamas. Man pasirodė net paradoksalu, kad nutoldamas nuo žemės motyvo peizažiškumo, ir panaudodamas universalesnę dangaus-žemės schemą, kuri paveikslo sanklodą pavertė abstraktesne, ir ją daugindamas laike, įvesdamas serijų kategoriją, pats sau neleidžiu tos nevilties užmiršti ir labiau priartėju prie jos belaikiškumo, non finito išraiškos.

Go Back to Your River Agnė Kulbytė in conversation with Henrikas Čerapas

Agnė Kulbytė: Nothing comes from nothing / Ex nihilo nihil fit. What this philosophical expression contains can be found in every act of painting – as a cause-effect relationship or a statement of the becoming of the form. Could it be said that Aftermath is something radically new – the post-phase of all your previous creative searches?

Henrikas Čerapas: Aftermath marks a milestone. All the painted things that have appeared in me and that you call “creative searches” were caused by paint – oil paint and reflection on my inner incentives. The painterly form comes originally from paint rather than from knowledge. My work is governed by a purposeful coincidence.

Paintings’ substance and the act of painting and its immediate experience are the most important arguments in the form of painting that I have been shaping. For a long time I’ve been asking myself, why work could not be completed in such an unfinished state as it is now, why it still lacks strokes and a story that has come to fruition. After all, it’s a Nothing, a dream of retrieving that which is lost – this dream is not meant to be fulfilled.

I can say that, from the painting point of view, I am not as free as I would like to be, and my movements are hampered by an overly complicated relationship with the story that I’ve been telling. I have always had my life as the theme of painting, and in reflecting on it and painting it in, perhaps I seek something that is missing in that life. Or, if I stated that my life as painting is a purest routine or a trajectorial inertia, I could assure you that this series of works, like many others, is rather a result of inertia than an outcome of “searching”.

But there is still something else I cannot put into words. That something makes me – unconsciously, as if I had a program installed – search for or strive for a strong, structured, powerful emotional expression in a work of painting. It is quite possible that this is that which you have called a “cause-effect relationship”, and this constant is the higher will that leads me. Aftermath is perhaps a part or phase of inner concentration on reflecting on this mystery, or a more profound beginning.

A. K.: When discussing the previous series, Les Exercices, I was concerned with describing your method of painting – the ways in which the painting process is unfolding, and in which the contemplation and realization take place. How did Aftermath develop?

H. Č.: In superficial terms, it is pure mechanics. You have correctly described it as existential mechanics. I seem to live as if out of inertia, I paint out of inertia, and it forms the basic constructive parameters of my existence, so I integrate them into the act of painting: an inert

attitude, a mechanical stroke, no illustrations, no visual narration. But this is just a surface.

For me, the space of canvas is an opportunity and a tool for unraveling and confession. In the studio, as if on a stage, there is a real drama going on without anyone seeing it: a consequence turns into a cause, a cause – into a consequence, and it is this determinism that gives painting its’ inner depth: without it, my works would be just a piece of stage scenery.

When painting Les Exercices, I had more automatism inside me, the situation was different, because I felt something new, I was fresh, in love – but here, I was depressed by realizing the senselessness of my work. In the previous series Live, which I was painting in the kitchen of a standard apartment, I devoted myself to contemplation and exploration of the landscape that I could see through the window, and these parameters were understandable and suitable for small-scale painting. It was the key – the classic landscape motif where the sky-land, the top-bottom turned into a constructive scheme, or abstract categories. In a large format, however, it didn’t work right away, and I had some trouble until I gained traction. In this case, sensitivity was out of place, and what I needed was a feeling of negligent – convincing myself that it did not mean a thing – distance, a maximum energy shock, even a decorative approach to the surface of painting.

In the Live series, I had already explored the effects of positive painting inertia and mechanical motion, and it became handy to me. The randomness makes the surface of such an inert touch of painting be different each and every time. It got me started up, and in the Les Exercices series I set it up as a method. But when working over Aftermath, I felt like I was approaching the limit: I had to reflect on my whole state of mind and my whole path, including why I was doing what I was doing, and probably that is why this series of works look more diverse. It’s like a “second mowing”, or “consequence”... – or “aftermath”.

A. K.: Interestingly, Aftermath breaks out of the sequence, the cyclic recurrence. Thus, variations of Aftermath are more suitably referred to as Parts – like in music. Their grouping is determined by the very paint, format, volume of a pictorial structure. They layer in time – from inspiration to exhalation – until a pure “liberation”, and perhaps, truly, “if the soul was free, it would be repeating the same movement”… Recurrence, a rhythm of action introduces a parameter of sound, “causes” a timbre tone. But is it true that those timbres stem from something else than the transparency and glow of colours – from something “unpicturesque” in the traditional sense?

H. Č.: What “makes” painting is the studio: it determines the ambition of painting and probably even the theme. My current studio is small, its space does not allow me to envelop the whole picture with my eyes, so the painting is layered in parts.

All the parts are born from the confrontations of the experiences within the process of painting, but the “sound” of painting, or the paintings’ timbre, is recorded during the action,

when the paintings’ substance, its swampiness and gravity, depth of its colour tone and all the marks of scratches, touches and smears create a timbre tension in the plane. In itself, the colour – even the most beautiful black – does not have all of it yet, it is just paint without any experience, any existential content. The way it is recorded, as well as the rhythmic sequence it is in, constructs the architecture of the picture and, of course, its sound timbre.

I am guided by some sort of composite logic. Painting is born from the characteristics of its language, from the material, while the “mechanics” of painting stem from my body – its disposition is the natural movement of my hand and the whole body. The stroke or scratch is born from this motion.

My visions emerge from the landscapes of my experienced being, their images intertwine, collide with each other, and multiply – it would be difficult to convey them in a single, “unique” picture, so seriality emerges as a natural necessity of a painterly process: painting is born from the characteristics of its language.

A. K.: Flows of abstractions, where separate paintings are reflections and sequences of each other, is a typical expression of contemporary painting. This kind of shift has also occurred in your painting: from Soils to Mega-pictures. Could the painting of Gerhard Richter in some aspects be considered as a somewhat akin strategy here?

H. Č.: Let us leave Richter to Richter. My material resources of painting are inadequate, so what can I say about the civilization-cultural environment in which I live and, moreover, paint? But it gives me strength and a sense of self-esteem; perhaps in other circumstances I would also start mass production for the market.

Traditionally, painting is done by brushes, by hand. All the other inventions are nothing more than so-called rationalizations. The protagonism of the hand is expression, a signature that often evolves into an easily recognizable style, or a manner restricting the gravitational possibilities of form and thought. In the case of Richter, painting is freed from these bolts by applying the action of scratching by a specific tool. Painting turns into mechanical production, opening a path to the randomness of painting situations, the beauty of paintings’ substance and the joy of unexpected effects. In this way, the conceptual state of painting is highlighted.

For me, a painted surface, a painted space, is first and foremost a figure through which I perceive the existential primordial image that is born within me. Abstraction is rather a poetic category, a metaphor. And these like to multiply and reflect upon each other. The mechanics of hand is favourably disposed towards that.

A. K.: There is a picture that stands out in the Aftermath collection: it’s called Latvian Dances. Is it a conscious cultural association?

H. Č.: It may be an identity association.

A. K.: It turns out that Aftermath is also an autobiographical overview. Herein, emerge some of your own motifs that prevailed in earlier phases of your oeuvre – the rhythms of the railway tracks, the silhouette of the old cooperative warehouse in Papilė, the structures of its beams, the rumble and darkness of the train, the colours of the landscape behind the railway. How would you describe this touch of memory in a visual sense now?

H. Č.: Yes, I really feel like having come to an end of something, it’s time to return into my own river. I have produced a whole warehouse of paintings, but what for? Where should I put them now? No one needs them. Aftermath is probably also a contemplation of my inadequate experience of this world.

All of the fragments of reality you have mentioned are autobiographical motifs and structural components of the images captured by my inner vision, or painting tools conveying a man’s catastrophe and existential Emptiness that cannot fit into his life – those he got when his nest of life was taken, his relations with his native land and the place that used to be his cosmos were broken off, when he became a wanderer... This has happened within a single human life, and this is happening Now. I am talking about the insurmountable Despair that I want to express, and it has turned out to me that “unique picture” – here I mean the Soils, whose primordial motif is a specific landscape in the local sense – Papilė, which does not convey the greatness and depth of that despair, but rather, mummifies it inside memory, because, from the point of view of time, it unfolds in fragmentation, in separate and, what is even worse, – through “beautiful” pictures. In this way, as in real life, one just settles and reconciles with it. I mean that despair has not ended, that its scale in human existence is immense. I even find it paradoxical that by moving away from landscape characteristics of the motif of land, and by using a more universal scheme of sky-land, which made the structure of painting more abstract, and by multiplying it in time, by introducing the category of series, I cannot allow myself to forget that desperation and come even closer to its timelessness, its expression of non-finito.

Biografija Henrikas Čerapas gimė 1952 metais sausio 13 dieną Akmenėje. Augo Papilėje. Visą jo kūrybą persmelkia autobiografinė tematika, autentiški gimtinės motyvai ir vaizdiniai.

1974–1978 m. mokėsi Kauno Stepo Žuko taikomosios dailės technikume. Tapė Žaliakalnio,

Aleksoto tilto, Nidos pajūrio motyvus. Savo pirminiuose tapybos bandymuose rado atspirtį Vlado Eidukevičiaus kūryboje. Nutapė etiudus: „Laisvės alėja“ (1975), „Vaizdas iš Latvių gatvės“ (1977), „Latvių gatvė“ (1977), „Po Aleksoto tiltu“ (1978), „Prie Vytauto bažnyčios“ (1978), „Žaliakalnio motyvas“ (1978). 1978–1979 metų žiemą praleido Ramygaloje. Nutapė pirmą savo tematinį peizažą „Šventoji naktis Ramygaloje“ (1979).

1976 m. gimė dukra Patricija.

1980–1987 m. studijavo Vilniaus Valstybiniame dailės institute. Susidomėjo Paulio

Cézanne’o tapyba, Liongino Šepkos dvimačiais reljefais, jų linijinio raižymo plastika (diplominis darbas „Lionginas Šepka. Portretas“, 1987). Nutapė etiudus – „Žemaitiškas dekis.

Beržoras“ (1981), „Tėvo trobelė“ (1982), peizažus – „Raudonskardis Papilėje“ (1982), „Vaizdas nuo Pelėdų kalno“ (1983), kompozicijas – „Kompozicija su pianinu“ (1986, eksponuota Studentų meno dienose Dailės institute).

1987–1988 m. nuomojosi kambarį Vilniuje, Užupio g. 7. Čia nutapė meditatyvių, savos

aplinkos natiurmortų – „Rudi batai“, „Natiurmortas su bažnyčia“, „Natiurmortas su baltu arbatinuku“, figūrinę kompoziciją – „Geltona siena“. 1987 m. dalyvavo Respublikinėje vaizduojamosios dailės parodoje Vilniaus Dailės parodų rūmuose (dab. Šiuolaikinio meno centras, ŠMC).

1988–1998

1988 m. įsikūrė pirmojoje savo dirbtuvėje Antakalnio g. 3, prie Vilniaus Šv. Petro ir Povilo bažnyčios. Dirbtuvės vidaus apšvietimas buvo itin tinkamas tapybai, leido sutelkti dėmesį į šviesos kontempliavimą, kuri ilgainiui virto pagrindine tapybos kategorija. Nutapė figūrinę kompoziciją su daiktais interjere „Vakaro mazochizmas. Paletė, arbatinukas ir magiškoji lazdelė“ (1988), pradėjo ciklą „Alijošiai“ (tapymo serijomos užuomazga): „Natiurmortas su alijošiumi“ (1988), „Alijošius žaliame fone“ (1988), „Alijošius ant lentos“ (1989), „Dvi šviesios figūros“ (1989), „Alijošius ir žvakidė“ (1989) ir kt.

1989 m. surengė pirmąją personalinę parodą „Alijošiai. Tapyba“ Dailės fondo galerijoje Vilniuje, P. Cvirkos g. Paveikslas „Vakaro mazochizmas“ eksponuotas Jaunųjų dailininkų kūrybos parodoje „Šalies jaunystė“ Maskvos centrinėje parodų salėje „Maniež“.

1990 m. lankėsi Paryžiuje ir Lufuteno salose Norvegijoje. Susidomėjo Alberto Giacometti tapyba ir skulptūra. Giacometti kūrybos paskatintas grįžo prie dvimatės plokštuminės struktūros tyrimo. Alijošiaus motyvą ėmė naudoti figūratyvios tapybinės masės ir paviršiaus struktūros įvaldymui. Svarbesni 1989–1991 m. kūriniai: „Papilės bažnyčia“ (1989), „Balta figūra žaliame fone“ (1990, Nacionalinis M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejus, NČDM),

„Alijošius prie sienos“ (1990), „Dvi nepažintos formos“ (1990–1991, Lietuvos dailės muziejus, LDM), „Respublika“ (1991, NČDM). Nutapė pirmąsias kompozicijas su geležinkelio motyvu „Dvi mėlynos figūros“ (1990), „Dvi pilkos figūros Papilėje“ (1990–1991).

1990 m. prisijungė prie „Angies“ grupės. Dalyvavo steigiamojoje grupės parodoje Vilniuje, Parodų paviljone Lazdynuose (dab. „Litexpo“). Įstojo į Lietuvos dailininkų sąjungą, pristatytas projekto „8 Painters from Lithuania” parodose Mosse (Norvegija) ir Stokholme (Švedija).

1990–1991 m. susižavėjo Jean-François Millet peizažų ir Gustavo Courbet figūrinių kompozicijų didingumu. Nutapė pirmąjį epišką dirvoną „Prarastos formos. Juoda figūra. Dirvonas“ (LDM), apčiuopė savo esminę temą ir plastinę idėją – „begalinę dirvono struktūros kitimo galimybę“ [H.Č.]. Pradėjo „Dirvonų“ ciklą.

1991 m. rudenį ir žiemą Čerapas praleido Prancūzijoje, Ardèche regione. Nutapė peizažinių motyvų – „Peizažas su rūku“, kompozicijų – „Ardèche‘o kėdė“, „Eifelis ir Napoleonas“, „Geltona kalva“ (1992), sukūrė objektų ir piešinių. Paryžiuje susipažino su skulptoriumi Antanu Mončiu, kuris 1992 m. pavasarį aplankė Čerapo parodą galerijoje L’ANEX, Montrouge (netoli Paryžiaus). Tų pačių metų rudenį Čerapas surengė etapinę parodą „Prarastos formos“ Vilniaus galerijoje „Arka“.

1992–1993 m. intensyviai tęsė „Dirvonų“ ciklą. Nutapė paveikslus: „Peizažas su keliautoju“ (1992), „Peizažas. Juoda skylė“ (1992–1993), „Peizažas su gulinčia galva“ (1992–1993), „Dirvonas su krūmais“ (1993), „Dirvonas su šungrybiais“ (1993). Jų plastika pasižymi vizionieriškumu, tūrine išraiška, abstrakčios ir figūratyvios tapybos junginiu.

1993 m. vasarą praleido Būtingėje, Latvijos pasienyje. Čia nutapė žymiuosius natiurmortus: „Natiurmortas su svogūnais“ (1993, Modernaus meno muziejus, MO), „Pilkas natiurmortas“ (1993, MO), „Natiurmortas su plūdėmis“ (1993, LDM). Pradėjo vad. Kurliandijos peizažų ciklą.

1992–1993 m. kūrė apimtinius medžio plastikos objektus (vertikalius aptapytus medžio stulpus). Juos kartu su tapyba instaliatyviai eksponavo parodoje „Amžinybės fragmentai“ Vilniaus galerijoje „Lietuvos Aidas“ (1993).

1994 m. nutapė etaloniniu laikomą dirvoną „Indigo Black“ (1994), taip pat kitus darbus: „Saulėtas dirvonas“ (1994),„Rudas dirvonas. I-II“ (1993–1994),„Dirvonas Papilėje“ (1993–1994).

Kūrė gulsčių formų, antropomorfinę, aptašyto medžio plastiką, vad. lavoniukais. Surengė personalinę parodą „Transformatoriai“ (ŠMC), kurioje instaliatyviai eksponavo „Dirvonus“ ir medžio plastiką. Dalyvavo apžvalginėje parodoje „Lietuvos dailė: 1989–1999. Dešimt metų“ (ŠMC).

1995 m. gimė dukra Kristijona. Čerapas pradėjo dėstyti Vilniaus dailės akademijoje, Tapybos katedroje (dėstė iki 2017 m.; prof. nuo 2013 m.).

Nuo 1995 m. pradėjo ieškoti naujos tapybinės temos, pasuko link figūratyvesnės raiškos.

Tapyba įgavo judesio, tapymo piešiant savybių. Kūrė masyvesnę apimtinę medžio plastiką, ją aptapydavo, taip tapybinį judesį pratęsdamas trimatėse formose. 1995–1996 m. dirbtuvės erdvėje sukūrė instaliaciją „Tapyba kaip skulptūra“ (užfiksuota Gintauto Trimako fotografijose).

1996 m. surengė parodą tuo pačiu pavadinimu galerijoje „Arka“.

Nutapė abstrakčiai figūratyvią kompoziciją „Gelžkelis Papilėje“ (1997), kuri žymėjo naujos temos ir naujo etapo pradžią.

1996–1997 m. gamtos įspūdžių pagrindu sukūrė piešinių bei didelio formato peizažines kompozicijas „Debesėliai. I-II-III-IV“. Surengė parodą „Krūmai ir debesys“ Kauno galerijoje „Eglė“ (1997).

1998 m. turėjo išsikraustyti iš dirbtuvės Antakalnio g. 3, pastatą perėmus Kurijai.

Prasidėjo naujas etapas.

2000–2007

1999 m. Čerapas įkūrė naują dirbtuvę Maironio g. 3 (buvusios spaustuvės Tiesa patalpose), Vilniuje. Apleistoje pramoninėje spaustuvės erdvėje galėjo padidinti kūrinių formatus ir įgyvendinti Courbet paveikslo „Laidotuvės Ornane“ inspiruotą mintį – suteikti savo tapybai „epinį tūrį“. Čia autobiografinių vaizdinių ir šalia geležinkelio praleistos vaikystės motyvų pagrindu nutapė seriją kūrinių, kuriuos apjungė į ciklą „Gelžkeliai ir galvos“. Praplėtė savo tapybinės raiškos arsenalą, ėmė naudoti netapybines medžiagas – statybinius ir spaustuvinius dažus, asfaltinę dervą (paveikslai „Skenduolių pasaulis“, 2003–2004, „Railway to Heaven“, 2005–2006 ir kt).

2004 m. Vilniaus miesto rotušėje surengė naują etapą apibendrinančią personalinę parodą „Tapyba. Gelžkeliai ir galvos“.

2000–2001 m. stažavosi Cité Internationale des Art Paryžiuje. Iš čia parsivežė piešinių seriją „Paryžiaus dienoraštis“ (eksponuota galerijoje „Kauno langas“, 2001).

2007 m. lapkritį, prieš išsikraustydamas iš buvusios spaustuvės Tiesa (dab. VDA parodų salė „Titanikas“) patalpų, surengė savaitę trukusią savo kūrybos dešimtmečio darbų retrospektyvą – „Ten Years After. The Last of My Last”. Svarbiausi eksponuoti paveikslai: „Requiem SS batalionui / Tėvo atminimui“ (2006), „Skenduolių pasaulis“ (2003–2004, MO), „I liked!“ (2005– 2006), „Rising Rising (I put a Spell on You)“ (2004, MO), „Gelžkelis Papilėje 2000“, „Railway to Heaven“ (2005–2006), etapinė didelio formato drobė „The Last Day of My Future. Didysis Penktadienis“ (2006–2007, Kauno modernaus meno fondas, KMMF).

2009–2019

2009–2010 m. trumpam įsikūrė buvusios ligoninės patalpose Bokšto g., Vilniuje. Čia nutapė raudonų monochrominių paveikslų seriją „The Dark Side of the Moon“ (2010, KMMF; eksponuota personalinėje parodoje „Kontracepcija“ VDA galerijoje „Akademija“ bei XIV-oje Vilniaus tapybos trienalėje „Klaidingas atpažinimas“ ŠMC).

Pradėjo tapyti vad. megapaveikslus (didelio formato drobes, susidedančias iš keturių segmentų), juose apjungė dviejų ankstesnių patyrimų rezultatus – struktūrišką plokštumos įtapymą ir maksimalaus tapybinio vizualumo siekį, haptišką vaizdo energetiką: „Jauno gitaristo meilės darželis I-II“ (2011), „Cabernet Sauvignon“ (2012), „Tapytojui kapuose dar yra vietos / Augustino Savicko atminimui“ (2012), „Tremtis gimtinėje. Kristus pievoje“ (2013).

Megapaveikslai eksponuoti parodose: „Peizažo transformacijos“ (Pero Kirkeby parodos

tęsinys) Nacionalinėje dailės galerijoje (2012), XV-oje tarptautinėje Vilniaus tapybos trienalėje „Tapybos kontekstai“ ŠMC (2013); „Lithuanian Art: Thinking through Landscape“ Beijingo nacionaliniame meno muziejuje, Kinijoje (2017).

2010–2011 m. dalyvavo jubiliejinėse grupės Angis parodose „Titanike“ ir Kauno paveikslų galerijoje.

2013 m. apsigyveno Vilniaus Pilaitės mikrorajone. Standartinio buto virtuvėje, pro langą matomo peizažo fragmento pagrindu pradėjo tapyti kamerinių darbų seriją „LIVE“ (angl. live – gyvai, tiesiogiai, iš vietos), simbolinį dangaus uždangos motyvą, rūko ir tuštumos kontempliacijas. Nuo šių peizažinių redukcijų tebesitęsia abstrakčių, didelio formato tapybinių serijų kūrimo procesas.

2014 m. Čerapas surengė antrąją savo kūrybos retrospektyvą „Vienas kelyje“ Kauno paveikslų galerijoje.

2015 m. serijos „LIVE“ kolekcija eksponuota tarptautinėje šiuolaikinio ir modernaus meno parodoje Expo Chicago 2015 (Navy Pier, Čikaga) ir paties Čerapo inicijuotose parodose „Ad Originem“, su jaunaisiais tapytojais.

2016 m. surengė retrospektyvą „Dirvonai. 1990–1995“ galerijoje „Pamėnkalnis“, Vilniuje.

(Parodą pristatė kaip Didžiąją tapybos legendą, atgaivino dailėtyrininkės Gražinos Kliaugienės mintis).

2016–2018 m. išsinuomotoje dirbtuvėje Vilniaus Spaudos rūmuose nutapė didelio formato drobių seriją „Les Exercices“, pilnai išskleisdamas vad. „brūkšniavimo“, neformalizuotos ritmikos metodą – kaip „automatinę mechaninę judesio percepciją“ [H.Č.]. Serija eksponuota 2017 m. Krokuvoje, galerijoje „Otwarta Pracownia“. Išleistas parodos katalogas: Les Exercices / sud. Agnė Kulbytė. Vilnius: Petro ofsetas, 2017. (ISBN 978-609-420-572-9).

2018–2019 m. nutapė seriją „Aftermath“, kuri tęsia „Les Exercices“ ieškojimus. Serijoje išsiskiria megapaveikslai: „Latvių šokiai“ (2018), „Acta Theologica“ (2019), „Grįžk į savo upę“ (2019).

2019 m. kovą-balandį Kauno galerijoje „Meno parkas“ Čerapas surengė parodą „Aftermath“.

Biography Henrikas Čerapas is born on January 13th, 1952 in Akmenė, raised in Papilė. His oeuvre is of an autobiographical theme, filled with authentic images and motives of his homeland.

1974–1978, studied at the Stepas Žukas Applied Art School in Kaunas. Painted motifs

of Žaliakalnis, bridge of Aleksotas, seaside of Nida. His first attempts to paint were inspired by the work of Lithuanian painter Vladas Eidukevičius (1891–1941). Etudes: “Alley of Laisvė” (1975), “View from Latvių Street” (1977), “Latvių Street” (1977), “Under the Aleksotas Bridge” (1978), “Near the Vytautas Church” (1978), “Motif of Žaliakalnis” (1978). He spent the winter of 1978–1979 in Ramygala, painted his first thematic landscape “Holy Night in Ramygala” (1979).

1976, his daughter Patricija is born.

1980–1987, studied at the State Art Institute in Vilnius. Was interested in painting

of Paul Cézanne, two-dimensional reliefs by Lithuanian sculptor Lionginas Šepka (1907–1985) and the plasticity of his liner carving (diploma work “Lionginas Šepka.

A Portrait”, 1987). Painted etudes – “Samogitian Bedspread. Beržoras” (1981), “Father’s Hut” (1982), landscapes – “Raudonskardis in Papilė” (1982), “View from the Owls Hill” (1983), compositions – “Composition with a Piano” (1986, exhibited at the Student Art Days in Vilnius Art Institute).

During 1987–1988, he rented a room in Užupio 7, in Vilnius. Here, painted meditative still-lives from his living surrounding: “Brown Shoes”, “Still-life with a Church”, “Still-life with a White Teapot”; figurative composition “Yellow Wall”. In 1987, participated in the Regional Exhibition of Fine Arts at Exhibition Hall (now Contemporary Art Center, CAC) in Vilnius.

1988–1998

In 1988, he settled in his first studio in Antakalnio 3, near the St. Peter and Paul Church in Vilnius. The interior lighting of the studio was particularly suitable for painting, allowing him to focus on the contemplation of light, which eventually became the main category of his painting. Painted the figurative composition (objects in interior) “Evening’s Masochism.

Palette, Teapot and the Magic Wand” (1988), began the cycle “Aloes” (the first series): “Stilllife with Aloe” (1988), “Aloe on a Green Background” (1988), “Aloe on a Board” (1989), “Two Light Shapes” (1989), “Aloe and the Candlestick” (1989) and others.

In 1989, organized his first solo exhibition “Aloes. Painting” at the Art Fund Show-room, P. Cvirkos Str., Vilnius. The painting “Evening Masochism” was exhibited at the Young Artists’ Exhibition “Youth of the Country” in Moscow, at the central exhibition hall “Maniež”.

In 1990, he visited Paris and the Lufuten Islands in Norway. Inspired by the painting and sculpture of Alberto Giacometti, he returned to the study of two-dimensional structure.

Motif of aloe was used to master the structure of painterly mass and surface of figurative

painting. Major works from 1989–1991: “Church in Papilė” (1989), “White figure on a Green Background” (1990, M. K. Čiurlionis National Museum of Art, NČDM), “Aloes by the Border” (1990), “Two Unknown Forms” (1990–1991, Lithuanian Museum of Fine Arts, LDM), “Republic” (1991, LDM). He painted the first compositions with the motif of a railway (“Two Blue Figures” 1990, “Two Gray Figures in Papilė” 1990–1991).

In 1990, joined artist’s group “Angis”. Participated in the founding exhibition of the group in Vilnius, at Exhibitions Pavilion in Lazdynai (now “Litexpo”). Joined the Lithuanian Artists’ Association, was presented at the project “8 Painters from Lithuania” exhibitions in Mosse (Norway) and Stockholm (Sweden).

During 1990–1991, he became fascinated by landscapes of Jean-François Millet and figurative compositions of Gustav Courbet. Painted his first epic soil “Lost Forms. Black Figure.

Soil” (LDM), got a grip of his underlying theme and plastic idea – “possibility of a soil’s infinite changeability” [H.Č.]. Started to paint the cycle of “Soils”.

Autumn and winter of 1991 Čerapas spent in France, in the region of Ardèche. Painted landscapes – “Landscape with Fog”, compositions – “Ardèche Chair”, “Eiffel and Napoleon”, “Yellow Hill” (1992), created objects and drawings. In Paris, he met a Lithuanian sculptor in exile Antanas Mončys (1921–1993), who visited Čerapas’ exhibition at the gallery L’ANEX in Montrouge (near Paris), in spring, 1992. In the autumn of the same year, Čerapas organized an important exhibition “Lost Forms” at the gallery “Arka” in Vilnius.

In 1992–1993, intensively continued the cycle of “Soils”, painted works: “Landscape with a Traveler” (1992), “Landscape. Black Hole” (1992–1993), “Landscape with a Lying Head” (1992– 1993), “Soil with Bushes” (1993), “Soil with a Toadstool” (1993). Their plasticity is characterized by a visionary, volumetric expression and combination of abstract and figurative painting.

Summer of 1993 was spent in Būtingė, border of Latvia. Here, he painted the famous still-lives: “Still-life with Onions” (1993, Museum of Modern Art, MO), “Gray Still-life” (1993, MO), “Still-life with Floats” (1993, LDM), started the cycle of so-called Kurlandian landscapes.

During 1992–1993, created voluminous objects of wood plastics (vertical polished wooden poles). They were exhibited together with paintings at his solo exhibition “Fragments of Eternity” at the gallery “Lietuvos Aidas” in Vilnius (1993).

In 1994, painted an etalonic soil “Indigo Black” as well as other works: “Sunny Soil” (1994), “Brown Soil. I-II” (1993–1994), “Soil in Papilė” (1993–1994). Created wooden plastics of anthropomorphic, horizontal forms, called Corpslets. Organized a solo exhibition “Transformers” at CAC, where he installed “Soils” together with the wood plastic. Participated in the exhibition “Lithuanian Art: 1989–1999. Ten Years” (CAC).

In 1995, daughter Kristijona is born. Čerapas starts teaching at Vilnius Academy of Arts, in the Department of Painting (until 2017; professor since 2013).

Since 1995, started to look for a new painting theme, turned to a more figurative expression – his painting acquires the quality of movement. He created a more massive, circular plastic of wood, painted it over, thus extending the painting’s movement in three-dimensional form. In 1995–1996, created an installation in his studio “Painting as Sculpture” (captured in photography by Gintautas Trimakas). In 1996, organized an exhibition under the same name at the gallery “Arka”.

In 1997, painted an abstractly figurative composition “The Railway in Papilė”, marking a new theme and a new period.

From 1996 to 1997, he created drawings and large-scale landscape compositions “Clouds. I-II-III- IV”; organized the exhibition “Bushes and Clouds” at the gallery “Eglė” in Kaunas (1997).

Forced to leave his studio at Antakalnio 3 in 1998, after the building was taken over by the Curia. A new phase of his work begins.

2000–2007

In 1999, Čerapas founded a workshop in the Maironio 3 (former premises of the printing house Tiesa), in Vilnius. In an abandoned industrial space, he finds an opportunity to enlarge the format of his works and realize the idea inspired by Courbet’s “A Burial at Ornans” – give to his painting an “epic volume”. Here, on the basis of autobiographical images and motifs of his childhood spent near a railway, a series of works appear, later combined into a series “Railways and Heads”. He expanded the spectrum of his painting expression, started to use non-painting materials – technical and polygraphic paint, asphalt resin (paintings “World of Drowned Men”, 2003–2004, “Railway to Heaven, 2005–2006, etc.).

In 2004, organized a solo exhibition summarizing the new era – “Painting. Railways and Heads” at the Vilnius City Hall.

In 2000–2001, Čerapas had an internship at the Cité Internationale des Art in Paris. From here, brought back a series of drawings “Cahier de Paris / Diary of Paris” (exhibited at the gallery “Kauno langas” in Kaunas, 2001).

In November, 2007, before leaving the premises of the former printing house Tiesa (now, Exhibition Hall “Titanikas”), he organized a week-long retrospective of his oeuvre “Ten Years After. The Last of My Last”. Major paintings on display: “Requiem for SS Battalion / Commemoration to Father” (2006), “World of Drowned Men” (2003–2004, MO), “I Liked!”

(2005–2006), “Rising Rising (I put a Spell on You)” (2004, MO), “Railway in Papilė 2000”, “Railway to Heaven” (2005–2006), era-defining large format canvas „The Last Day of My Future” (2006–2007, Kaunas Modern Art Foundation, KMMF).

2009–2019

2009–2010, temporarily settled his studio in the premises of the former hospital in Bokšto Str., in Vilnius. Here, he painted a series of paintings in red monochrome “The Dark Side

of the Moon” (2010, KMMF; exhibited in the solo exhibition “Contraception” at the gallery “Akademija” in Vilnius and at the XIV-th Vilnius Painting Triennial “Misidentification” at CAC).

Started painting mega-paintings (so called large-format canvases, consisting of four segments) and combined the results of two previous experiences – structural plane-tapping and maximum striving for pictorial visuality, haptic visual energy: “Young Guitar-Man’s Love Garden. I-II” (2011), “Cabernet Sauvignon” (2012), “There is still a Place for a Painter in the Graves / Hommage to Painter Augustinas Savickas” (2012), “Exile in the Country. Christ in a Meadow” (2013). Mega-paintings have been exhibited in the shows: “Transformations of Landscape” (following the exhibition of Per Kirkeby) at National Art Gallery in Vilnius (2012), XV-th International Vilnius Painting Triennial “Contexts of Painting” in CAC (2013); “Lithuanian Art: Thinking through Landscape” at National Museum of Art in Beijing, China (2017).

During 2010–2011, participated in the anniversary exhibitions of group “Angis” at Exhibition Hall “Titanikas” and Kaunas Picture Gallery.

In 2013, he moved his studio to Pilaitė district in Vilnius. In the kitchen of a standart apartment, he began to paint a chamber series of paintings “LIVE”, based on a fragmented landscape’s view through the window. It was a contemplation of a symbolic cover of the sky, of fog and emptiness. From these landscape reductions, the process of painting abstract, large-format series continues.

In 2014, Čerapas organized his second retrospective “Alone on the Road” at Kaunas Picture Gallery.

In 2015, the collection of paintings from the series “LIVE” took part at the International Exhibition of Contemporary and Modern Art at Expo Chicago 2015 (Navy Pier, Chicago); the works were also exhibited in shows with younger painters “Ad Originem”, initiated by Čerapas.

In 2016, he organized a retrospective “Soils. 1990–1995” at the gallery “Pamėnkalnis” in Vilnius. (The exhibition was presented as the Great Legend of Painting, reviving the thoughts by Lithuanian art critic Gražina Kliaugienė).

2016–2018, he painted a large-format series of canvases “Les Exercices” in his second studio at the Press House in Vilnius, fully expanding the method of “dashes” – as a unformalized rhythm and the possibility of “automatical mechanical perception of motion” [H.Č.].

The series was exhibited at the gallery “Otwarta Pracownia” in Krakow (2017). Catalogue of the exhibition is published: Les Exercices / ed. by Agnė Kulbytė. Vilnius: Petro ofsetas, 2017.

From 2018 to 2019, he painted the series “Aftermath” that extended the search found in “Les Exercices”. Remarkable mega-paintings from the series: “Latvian Dances” (2018), “Acta Theologica” (2019), “Go back to Your River” (2019). The series “Aftermath” was exhibited at the gallery “Meno Parkas” in Kaunas, in March-April, 2019.
