igitalization doesn’t simply enable us to do the same things as before but faster.

Because of the insights it generates, the detail that it can reveal and it’s adaptability across platforms, digitalization with its co-workers, big data and data processing, make tasks and processes that might once have been considered too difficult or even impossible, now very doable. It supports the delivery of what once were hard, physical products that had to be bought, now as non-physical services that are available when we need them but do not need physical storage when we don’t need them. The obvious example is music where, instead of shelves weighed down with physical media — vinyl, tapes or CDs — we simply call up the music we want from Amazon, Spotify, Google or whoever we use.

It’s becoming much the same in Aircraft Operations IT where, instead of Racks upon Racks of physical paper manuals, including the ever-growing archive of previous versions, an increasing number of airlines and operators are turning to digital document solutions.

That’s the theme of our case study from Luxair where a digital document management system has not only removed the need to hold physical copies and archives but also has improved the scope, cross

referencing and accessibility of the airline’s manuals.

In a similar vein, we are launching the first of our new occasional features, ‘Solutions in Practice: Real life essential five minute case studies’ with a strippeddown, quick read, case study on a critical topic. In this issue that is the digital document management system implemented by SAS. Another great strength of digitalization is the sheer volume of information it can manage which, when combined with big data and data processing (see above) means that cost and environmentally critical decisions such as in the area of fuel efficiency, can be much better informed for much more effective outcomes. Our case study from Lufthansa Cargo focuses on a particularly central feature of fuel management, contingency fuel, and how a data driven digital solution can make a significant difference.

In early July 2019, StorkJet announced that Bombardier and Embraer have been added to the list of supported aircraft in advancedAPM, on top of the already supported Airbus and Boeing aircraft. Storkjet’s APM (Aircraft Performance Monitoring) software informs airlines with up-to-date in-flight performance for each aircraft in the fleet, enabling optimum accurate planning and execution of flights, and reduced fuel burn.

StorkJet CEO, Renata Niedziela, said: “Nowadays, independent monitoring and constant improvement of aircraft performance is considered to be a crucial element of airlines’ business strategy. Since each aircraft manufacturer provides their own performance monitoring software, the diversity and the size of the fleet makes the aircraft performance monitoring process laborious and time-consuming.

“The initial development of advancedAPM has been centered around performance monitoring for the most popular aircraft types produced by Airbus and Boeing, undoubtedly key players in commercial aircraft manufacturing.

However, in response to customer demand, the solution has recently been introduced for Embraer and Bombardier as well. Today StorkJet provides APM for: Q400, E-Jet family, B737 (Classic, NG & MAX), B787, A320 (entire family, CEO and NEO). If a specific type is not included on the platform already StorkJet is sufficiently flexible to include it during the implementation process.

Safety Line launches ‘ OptiFlight — In-Flight guidance ’ to optimize all flight phases Airline flight plans are usually highly optimized but within certain constraints and limitations, leaving space for further optimization by the pilots in real time, if given the right tools and information.

Safety Line announced, in early Auguist 2019, the launch of ‘OptiFlight — In-flight guidance’, a unique suite of solutions optimizing all flight phases including climb.

The flight phase that can benefit the most from optimization is the climb phase, which consumes up to 30% of total fuel for medium haul flights, but is also the most complex, with many parameters changing as the aircraft ascends.

To tackle this complexity, Safety Line’s data science team initiated a partnership with academic research labs to explore how historical flight data could be leveraged towards optimizing the climb phase. The result was OptiClimb, a unique fuel efficiency solution allowing airlines to save 5 to 6% of climb fuel thanks to machine learning performance models for each tail, accurate 4D weather forecasts and the issuance of customized speed recommendations to the pilots for each flight.

Having addressed the climb phase, Safety Line started getting feedback from customer airlines that they would like to see a single flight efficiency solution addressing all flight phases. After initial discussions and testing, the following services emerged: • OptiDirect: shortcut opportunities based on historical tracks flown; • OptiSpeed: proposed Mach speed adjustments and their impact on fuel and time; • OptiLevel: Flight level optimization taking winds into account; • OptiDescent: Top of descent and descent speed recommendations.

A new customer: in July 2019, iXair joined the dgBirds’ community

iXair, the Business Aviation company based at Paris le Bourget, subscribed the Documentation service that will enable its pilots have an easy and rapid access to the technical manuals and company’s referential, from their iPads. Jenny Perrot, iXair Compliance Monitoring and Safety Director mentions that, “After a few weeks where we tried the solution and after having obtained the approval from our civil aviation authority, we decided to formally deploy dgBirds’ Documentation service since we are convinced that this solution will significantly improve our Flight Operations processes and this, for a very reasonable budget.

Both the mobile application and the Administration platform revealed to be very user friendly and, therefore, easy to use”.

New features leading to full paperless Flight Operations

On the top of the already Documentation service, dgBirds customers are now able to have access to Electronic Flight Folders and schedules via the new Mission / Briefing service, available in mobility situations from iPads as well as from any Web browser. Thanks to this new service, Pilots can receive, view their schedule and consult their flight folders. During the flight preparation, pilots can communicate their fuel decisions, read the dispatcher message and study their flight folder. During the flight, they can write all information required (e.g. fuel consumption, flight plan updates, clearances…) and, at the end of flight, Pilots can sign and send back the filled document to their Dispatch department who can consult and store the signed OFP, as requested.

Transavia France and OpenAirlines announce green initiative to launch real time and in-flight fuel efficiency solution In mid-June 2019 OpenAirlines received the Paris Air Forum Trophy 2019 and announced a partnership with Transavia at the PARIS AIR FORUM organized

by La Tribune and gathering major players in the aerospace industry.

Transavia and OpenAirlines, the global provider of fuel efficiency solutions, signed an agreement on Friday, June 14th. Transavia becomes the research and development partner for SkyBreathe® OnBoard, a real-time eco-flying solution that provides live guidance to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions during the flight.

Building on the significant fuel savings and emission reduction of SkyBreathe® Fuel Efficiency, for which the launch airline was also Transavia, in 2013, both companies are taking their partnership a step further to reduce aviation’s carbon footprint by

The AWACS research project comes to a conclusion after three years of successful collaboration

Groupe ADP and VallJet signed up to adopt Safety Cube risk management solution

In order to address airport safety and efficiency issues at a time when congestion and capacity increase are major concerns for airports, Safety Line, together with key actors in the aviation industry, launched the AWACS (AirsideWatch for Amelioration of Capacity and Safety) research project in late June 2019.

Since October 2015, Envisa (an international consultancy specialized in environmental and sustainability aspects of aviation), LIP6 (the Computer lab of the Univertsity of Paris VI), IFSTTAR (the French Institute of Science and Technology for Transport, Development and Networks) and Paris Aéroport, have worked closely with Safety Line on this common project. Supported by the competitivity clusters AsTech and Systematics, the Ile-de-France Region and Bpi France, the AWACS project has allowed Safety Line to further enrich its ‘AirsideWatch’ solution for airports, which aims at leveraging ground radar data towards improving airside operations efficiency.

Etihad bolsters flight safety with SITAONAIR’s eWAS Weather Awareness Solution In late June 2019, Etihad Airways announced that it has bolstered flight safety by choosing to deploy SITAONAIR’s rich and intuitive EFB Weather Awareness Solution, eWAS, across more than 100 aircraft.

Ahead of its official launch on 6 April 2019, the eWAS solution was trialed by a select group of Etihad pilots throughout 2018 with extremely positive results, cementing its undeniable business and safety benefits for airlines, pilots and flight operations alike. More than 18,000 pilots across multiple carriers have now trialed the solution globally.

Flatirons announce new managed content services and software agreement with Rolls-Royce In mid-June 2019. A business update from AVTECH In late June 2019, AVTECH Sweden AB published a business update. The initial two quarters of 2019 have involved intensified marketing and development activities. AVTECH has visited several trade shows, airlines and conventions but has also had an active period of more conventional marketing activities. The last 18 months has involved similar types of activities and the business was glad to announce that there is an increasing market interest in AVTECH’s technology.

Several airlines are currently reviewing business offers sent from AVTECH and decisions from these airlines are expected during 2019. AVTECH has increased its capacity on the marketing side by engaging Björn Ostertag, former Head of Fuel Efficiency at Lufthansa Cargo. Björn fits very well with the AVTECH team.

AVTECH has so far focused on the European market, but with this increase in resources the North American market will also be reviewed. A strong focus has been put on the development of additional cruise and climb optimization services to expand AVTECH’s in-flight optimization offering. In Q3 and Q4 these new services will be rolled out and tested primarily in Norwegian’s operation.

The first of a series of proFLIGHT campaigns was launched during Q2. The first campaign focused on attracting European airline pilots to sign up for a free proFLIGHT PREMIUM trial.

Boeing Introduces Jeppesen Mobile QuickClear Application for Pilots In late July 2019, Boeing announced that it has has introduced a new digital application, Jeppesen Mobile QuickClear, created in partnership with Airside Mobile for encryption and data management services to simplify the international clearance process for pilots with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).

“Mobile QuickClear helps pilots manage the entire customs process in one place,” said William Ampofo, VP Business & General Aviation, Boeing Global Services. “improving their efficiency with easier access to required clearance information.”

Working seamlessly with Mobile Passport app, used by more than seven million commercial passengers today, Mobile QuickClear securely collects passport information to relay it to the CBP agents via Mobile QuickClear for a seamless Advanced Passenger Information System manifest clearance process.

The launch of Mobile QuickClear also expands the capability of the existing Mobile Passport app to now include passengers of private aircraft in addition to commercial airlines, and is expected to reduce clearance errors and consequences such as fines or penalties on air travelers by up to 30%.

The development of Mobile QuickClear received support from strategic partners, including the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), to obtain pilot perspectives and feedback. “Innovative applications like Mobile QuickClear are critical for the future of aviation,” said Mark Baker, president and CEO of AOPA. “Simplifying the international customs process will give more time back to pilots to focus on other tasks and enhance the flying experience.”

Connected FMS: First automatic inflight synchronization of FMS and Lido Pilot Solutions Successful cooperation between Lufthansa Systems and GE Aviation | First demo presentation at the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) Users Forum in Chicago

In late June 2019, Lufthansa Systems and GE Aviation announced that they are the first providers in the aviation market to offer a Lufthansa Systems, in cooperation with GE Aviation, are the first providers in the solution that allows for the inflight aviation market to make use of the synchronization of the flight plan between capabilities of a connected FMS. the GE Aviation flight management system (FMS) and Lufthansa Systems Lido pilot applications directly on-aircraft. The first demonstration of the connected FMS using operational use cases was presented at the EFB Users Forum in Chicago. The new FMS feature will be available following a software update from GE Aviation.

Flight crews rely on flight-operational information available in their EFB devices in various applications, which today is typically entered manually into the FMS. Inflight, the FMS manages the flight plan by computing an optimal trajectory and provides pilots with guidance along the computed trajectory. The manual entering of data into the FMS during pre-flight preparations or inflight can lead to partially hazardous consequences if entered incorrectly.

Lufthansa Systems, in cooperation with GE Aviation, are the first providers in the aviation market to make use of the capabilities of a connected FMS. The new solution has an interface that enables the Lido Pilot Solutions to read flight-plan data processed by the FMS and send flight-plan information from the EFB to the FMS. “Utilizing capabilities of a connected FMS is a true milestone for digital navigation in aviation, because it automates the daily manual data entry processes of pilots, which are quite prone to error, and enables the data flow between different applications,” said Dr. Bernd Jurisch, Head of Flight & Navigation Products & Solutions at Lufthansa Systems.. “This synchronization of valuable flight-relevant data between the FMS and pilot applications reduces pilots’ workload and greatly improves their situational awareness, while also significantly mitigating errors through incorporated cross checks that are even graphically visible for the crew.”

Dr. Wittmann began his career in the Lufthansa Group in 1995 at Lufthansa Systems after earning a doctorate in physics. In his more than 20 years with the aviation group, he has held various IT management positions in Commercial Solutions and Operations Solutions as well as in technical domains.

A: Fuel is a very large component of airlines’ expenses. We already had some measures to track down our fuel initiatives, but we wanted to go further.

SkyBreathe® allows us to narrow it down to different phases of flights. The software helps us get a better picture of the overall performance and savings.

Q: What are the benefits that the solution brings to Porter Airlines so far?

A: In terms of the benefits, it helps us asking “why” about a lot of different things such as how we run our airline, how we use the Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), how we do our approaches… It is constantly evolving: we already have achieved solid benefits, but through asking why we keep finding new opportunities to be more efficient.

Q: What features do you particularly enjoy?

A: I particularly enjoy the fact that we can run analyses through many criteria such as timeframe or airports. I also like the fact that I can track my flight since I am a pilot as well. The software helps analyze flight, for example by observing the difference we have during the four seasons in Canada, or by identifying the challenges we could have at specific airports. I can drill down on why things are the way they are.

Q: What advice would you give to airlines that want to set up a fuel efficiency program?

A: I suppose it’s about managing expectations: understanding that on the first day you don’t have all the information you need. It does take a little bit of time to find opportunities.

As a result, it’s a gradual process that will pay-off. You will be able to adjust the procedures and techniques that pilots and operations use to better manage fuel and carbon emissions.

Q: And if you had to define SkyBreathe® in three words, what would they be?

In late July 2019, Sezgin Yolcu, Flight Operations Engineer at SunExpress, shared his experience using SkyBreathe® to support fuel efficiency efforts: Q: Which were your goals and main issues when you chose SkyBreathe®?

A: When we chose SkyBreathe® at SunExpress, our main goal was to increase and optimize our fuel savings by implementing fuel efficiency software. In 2017, we assumed that we were saving 2% of our fuel consumption, and we expected to increase our fuel savings by 0.5% per year until reaching 4% of fuel savings in 2021. To achieve this goal, we needed a fuel efficiency tool that showed trends and analysis to identify fuel savings opportunities. We wanted to move fast and implement it within three months.

However, with the help of OpenAirlines Project Team, we implemented SkyBreathe® in just four months, which was aligned with our Project Plan.

Can you estimate the benefits that the solution brings to SunExpress?

First, I would like to explain the organizational structure of SunExpress in terms of the Fuel Saving Campaign: our Flight Operations Management created a Fuel Efficiency Core Team (FECT) to handle fuel-related topics companywide. Our FECT is composed of a pilot, two engineers, and an operational control center.

On the other hand, we established a Fuel Efficiency Team (FET) with more members from different departments such as maintenance, ground operations, flight planning, and commercial. The main benefit of using SkyBreathe® for our Fuel Efficiency Core Team (FECT) is that they can measure fuel savings and potential remaining. It also helps us improve communication with executive management: fuel savings are reported every quarter, giving our Management Team a chance to follow the financial progress. I cannot disclose the exact numbers, but I can roughly say we are on track to reach our goal of reducing our fuel consumption by 4% before 2021.

What I enjoy the most about SkyBreathe® is its Query Editor, which is a flexible environment where I can create graphs, tables, and even new measures to run any kind of analysis that I want. What advice would you give to airlines which want to set up a fuel efficiency program? A well-prepared project plan is crucial to start an effective fuel saving campaign. First, establish your fuel team, and then look for the fuel efficiency software which best suits your airline’s needs. Indeed, without any view on your fuel savings achievement, you cannot calculate your potential and detect your weak areas to focus efforts on. Then you can start a communication program with your pilots. Once you have implemented a fuel efficiency solution, you’ll also find additional fuel-saving potentials for maintenance, ground operations, flight planning, and commercial sides. Then, it’s all about applying a continuous improvement cycle to the fuel-saving initiatives: Plan, Do, Check, Act, which is known as the PDCA cycle. Finally, when considering implementing a fuel efficiency solution, I would advise airlines to anticipate data integration issues: FDR (Flight Data Record) data flow and conversion to the required format, AOC (Airline Operations Center) data, OFP (Operational Flight Plan) data, and others (ACARS, Weight & Balance, etc.).

W

e’ll tackle this article in two parts. First we’ll consider how Lufthansa Cargo (the airline) approached the topic of contingency fuel; then we will cover some background information on the statistics. But first, some brief facts and figures about Lufthansa Cargo.

LUFTHANSA CARGO

There are around 4,600 employees in the business with a fleet of 17 aircraft: 12 MD11 and 5 Boeing 777 with a further two 777s scheduled for delivery in 2019.

EBIT (Earnings Before Interest and Taxes) is around €240m and, more pertinent for the subject in hand, 20 per cent of Lufthansa Cargo’s costs are accounted for with fuel, the cost of which amounts to €326m. That’s a significant cost so there is always an incentive to reduce it and an interest in any program offering the chance to improve performance on this front. The airline serves over 300 destinations but that includes the entire Lufthansa Group network because, while 50 percent of Lufthansa Cargo’s cargo is transported on the freighters, fifty percent goes into the holds of passenger flights. There are some 12.9bn Freight Ton Kilometers Offered (FTKO) and about 8.9bn Freight Ton Kilomenters Transported (FTKT): the overall Loadfactor is around 70 percent.

WHY INTRODUCE ANALYSED CONTINGENCY FUEL (ACF)

Now, jumping into the main topic, and what motivated Lufthansa Cargo to introduce Analyzed Contingency Fuel (ACF). At the time of writing, the implementation was not completed but was in the final phase, however, we’d like to share how it has gone so far and how the issue has been tackled.

First, what is the purpose of contingency fuel? The classic definition states that ‘Contingency fuel is loaded for deviations from planned and actual trip fuel’, i.e. for unforeseen factors. They might be deviations from forecast weather conditions, deviations from the planned route or from planned cruising levels and/or altitudes.

In general, it’s loaded for deviations between planned and actual demands on fuel: this is the classic definition of contingency fuel.

Most of the contingency fuel policies used by Lufthansa Cargo are in the OFPs (Operational Flight Plans) as in figure 1.

In fact, in a couple of months following the time of writing, all contingency fuel policies were planned to be in the OFP because the airline will have a statistical program (see below) being implemented and this will reduce many of the other fuel policies but not always. There has to be a statistical sample size behind the data and where there have only been, say, ten flights using that policy type, there won’t be any statistical contingency fuel. That’s why airlines are forced to stick with some old methods because it will not be possible to substitute everything behind it in the future. That said, Lufthansa Cargo calculates that about 80 per cent of flights will be run under statistical contingency fuel.

We won’t go through the classic methods with which readers might well be familiar but figure 2 shows the current distribution for contingency fuel policies for the two fleets at Lufthansa cargo.

Depending on the fleet, the airline makes less use of 20 minutes contingency for the MD11 and, for the B777, it is used more with more China routings which are longer. So, it depends on where the aircraft is flying and how it is being flown. At the time of writing Lufthansa Cargo used all contingency fuel policy types except Analyzed Contingency Fuel (ACF) or Statistical Contingency Fuel (SCF); but is getting there with those.

The chart in figure 3 was created by Michael to show the current situation. So what does it show?

What is the driver for introducing ACF at Lufthansa Cargo?

Explaining the advantages of ACF on the basis of a representative subset of our Citypairs (2 years)

statistics behind it: there’s nothing about sample sizes, how big a sample size has to be used to administer ACF; what kind of normalization to do; factorization; standardization; how to model the data behind… this is all something we’ll cover below. In general, an airline will have to negotiate with the local regulator as to how ASCF and/or SCF will be implemented. It is necessary to file an agreement and to show all of the data and documentation in support of that. For the future, Lufthansa Cargo’s aim is to find the balance between safety and economy plus, the whole thing should be sensitive to fuel consumption.

Taking all that into account, the chart from figure 3 has been modified for figure 4 with the percentiles introduced.

The boxes represent Delta Trip Fuel and the distribution of the Delta Trip Fuels by routings over a period of two years. You’ll see the minimum values of Data Trip Fuel as well as the maximum values and the ‘center of gravity’, the boxes that contain 50 percent of the Delta Trip Fuels. It gives a good idea of the current data spread for those representative city pairs that were used. Delta Trip Fuel is defined as actual trip fuel minus planned trip fuel.

What readers will see is that the city pairs on the left tended to over-burn, for example Sharjah-Hong Kong, and they have a fixed amount of contingency fuel.

The contingency fuel never adapted to what is actually consumed so that, for the next flight there will always be the same amount (5%, 20 minutes…): it’s not consumption sensitive. Some of the city pairs cited will usually burn up all of their contingency fuel while for others, on the right of the chart, such as Frankfurt-Narita, the contingency fuel was hardly ever used up and yet the same amount was always loaded; there is no flexibility. This was an issue that Lufthansa Cargo wanted to tackle and with Statistical Contingency Fuel there is a framework with which those fixed values can be replaced. However, it’s important to know that this framework is not like a recipe that tells users how to treat the data in detail or how to treat the

It could be said that 90 percent of trip fuel data are below the orange (90 percentile) line and 99 percent of trip fuel data lies below the black (99 percentile) line. But of course, not all of Lufthansa Cargo city pairs are on the chart: it’s just a representative sample.

When does the airline use CONT90 (Contingency 90) and when CONT99?

Lufthansa Cargo’s plan is to follow the EASA scheme, a decision tree constructed

by EASA which takes into account the weather situation, visibility, cloud ceiling, whether there is an ERA airport available and runways with ILS. This is going to be implemented in the airline’s flight planning software, LIDO, then it can be decided which percentile is going to be used. So, one could roughly say that 90 percent is more for the standard conditions and the 99 percent is for adverse conditions.

There is analytical software on the left of the chart, Honeywell Forge for Airlines, and in that software, Lufthansa Cargo produces the table that goes into the Lido Flight Planning System. Lido then decides whether for the next flight it will take the CONT90 value or the CONT99 value, the result of which is printed on the OFP. Parallel with that, the pilots are shown dashboards about distribution (below right on the table) which is important in the context of building up trust in the data: the crew has to see how the value CONT99 looks in a distribution for this specific city pair; otherwise, if there’s no trust, there will be a counter reaction. All that said, the final fuel decision still remains with the crew but the hope is that the better process will offer a better picture of what they need to make that decision.

So, when the flight is conducted and creates a new sub-set, this goes back into the software and there is data monitoring with quality checks and so on. It is important to build a program behind it that monitors the whole process.

Current stage for implementation and next steps

Statistical metrics and analytics have been developed together with Honeywell and made ready, and there is also a data quality program underway to watch all ACF involved parameters. The next step will be the testing of the integration of the new system with the flight planning software which, at the time of writing, was looking very good — as we’ve already said above, it will be necessary to provide data and charts to the crews and set up the communication program, a very important element to explain how ACF works. Of course, a flight safety risk evaluation has to be done and then the plan was to go live in the first quarter of 2019.

DATA PREPARATION, VALIDATION AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF CONTINGENCY FUEL

As we’ve already seen, there is a process that has to be followed in order to introduce ACF. There are regulations that need to be understood and there is, of course, data preparation, data validation and statistical analyses to be done, the last step but not the least important.

From the point of view of the software provider, there first needs to be a correct calculation, the calculation needs to be integrated into the flight plan and then, from the software point of view, there needs to be proper support, proper validations, proper troubleshooting tools to ensure that the data is always being calculated correctly (a simple example would be where there are old aircraft, it might not deliver good resolution of the FDM data, it might be necessary to use burn-based values or a variance of those values).

As a first step for each flight (figure 6) the corrected Trip Fuel Delta will be needed.

are many different correction that could be put in here, for example, the planned ground distance and the fuel bias correction factor for the engine… there’s a lot that can be done but it’s still normalization of variables that are meant to stabilize the trip fuel Delta.

Then, one of the most important things that can extend behind the scenes is, opening the EASA regulation or any other ICAO regulation, they say, ‘we want recent data to be weighted more than past data’. So that, when something happens like a routing change, or if fuel burn has drastically increased in the past 6 months or if the routings have changed because of some events, the data from a couple of years ago should be less weighted less than the more recent data.

In short, there is no fixed recipe. There are many options: an airline could take the full two years, and weight them linearly with, say, the first flight having a weight nearer to zero and the last flight nearer to two to give an average of one. But then you might want to include seasonality or have a rolling period, every three months; those data will need to be updated for the specific city pairs and aircraft type. At the same time there might be different winter and summer schedules, and different fuel planning procedures for these: these are all important elements and, for that reason, it’s never ‘one size fits all’. Every operation is different with, perhaps, some flights that are seasonal, some that are not or some in between.

For this part, figure 7 shows a real example from Lufthansa Cargo; the whole story has been divided into five periods.

There is the actual trip fuel and the planned trip fuel and the difference between them would be the Delta. However, if the weather was bad and there was additional fuel put on at the last minute, then that needs to be corrected with the Cost of Weight (CoW) and the Take-off Weight (ToW) of the fuel because the Delta will be greater. On the other hand, if the flight has been planned with more passengers but, actually some of them didn’t show up, then there will need to be another Delta which has been calculated in the flight planning system with the weight of the passengers being a certain amount and that also needs to be corrected.

This is the first step to building the trip fuel Delta because, at the end of the day, there can be different averages, i.e. per flight, per city pair, a combination of city pairs and aircraft type… however, it will be necessary to take into account the variance and the arrival time as well as the airport at which the flight lands. Arriving at Heathrow in the morning is one thing: arriving in Sofia is quite different. There

just the plan average and with a fixed weight of 1. Then there is an intermediate weight that is a bit lower than 1 and then, the data on the far left is accorded a lower weight. In this way, the whole spectrum of data is included with, of course, care taken to calculate the correct variance so that, at the end of the day, when values are calculated, the aim is for the Delta at the end of the day to go to zero.

In addition to all that, the data has to be cleaned, normalized for different parameters (figure 8); also, distributions need to be considered so we’ll try to explain the concept of distributions.

On the very right side of the chart it says ‘Outliers matter’ because, if we think about how airlines plan their passenger weight on the flight. They’ll say, there are 200 passengers and each passenger with their baggage will be 100kg. But that average does not tell the whole story because the variance between different individuals can be significant and that needs to be incorporated in the calculations. Reports for management can show averages but averages in the analyses will not help achieve a tangible result. All of those things need to be considered.

Figure 9 shows a typical distribution of over one thousand flights — TFD stands for Trip Fuel Delta.

“…there are 200 passengers and each passenger with their baggage will be 100kg. But that average does not tell the whole story because the variance between different individuals can be significant and that needs to be incorporated in the calculations. ”

This is what you see on the X-axis: percentages of planned trip fuel and it’s very important to understand because the flight planning system works with planned amounts of fuel. It has to take into account different routing, different weather, the weight of the aircraft, etc. For example, looking at the green sector, that represents distribution to the 90th percentile which means that 90 percent of the flights have had trip fuel delta, actual minus plan with all the corrections, less than 3 percent. Then, the 95th percentile in yellow is between 2.7 and around 4.2.

The 99th percentile represents 99 percent of Delta and, in purple, the outlier flights include some very large Deltas such as 10 percent or some very low Deltas such as minus 2 percent.

That all needs to be considered and now imagine all the combinations of fleet, route, or the combinations of city pairs and aircraft type plus, each of those blocks (the 90 percent, the 95 percent, the 99 percent, the outliers…) has different distribution and each distribution is different. You won’t see standard bell-curve distributions. All the different distributions would be messy which is why we need smart statistical analysis and modern methodology in order to do that calculation.

Averages won’t be enough because flight is a phenomenon that has many variables so, taking all that into account in figure 10…

… the green distribution (the 90th percentile) looks more or less like a bell curve while the yellow, 95th percentile, is very narrow. The 99th percentile, the outlier distribution, in purple, is much larger if we calculated the weight between the lightest and the heaviest cases which is what has to be done. We have implemented state of the art statistical methodology with state of the art data preparation and validation in order to achieve that. Fortunately, at the end we

… first there is Lanzarote to Brussels (Note: example doesn’t use Lufthansa Cargo data) — where 90 percent of flights have had the trip fuel Delta less than 3.29 percent. But, on the second row, Lanzarote to Fuerteventura, two Canary Islands close to each other, around 100km apart, the 90th percentile is around 30 percent. On shorter flights, there are larger deviations; which is why we need a statistical program that can calculate this. We don’t want, every time to divide the flights into different brackets and then do it manually, and then come back, and report this information to management. We need a smart system that can do it for us.

We have depicted in figure 12 a very simple tree with a three-fold usage. On the one hand there might be data fields which combined inputs from different data sources and, for those data fields, there needs to be validation. ‘Is my landing weight actual always greater than the aircraft operating weight?’ That’s something very simple but human error in the system will ruin your analysis. On the left there is a ‘B’ box where it also says ‘Coalesce (D, C) which means that if you don’t get the burn-based values, you’ll get the time-based values. So it’s important that the data validation engine is capable of handling such complicated trees behind the scenes, to be sure that the correct data is being used. And this can also be used for what is called ‘Tag functionality’, meaning, in the example above, burn-based versus time-based. If

there are three, four, five hundred different validations for every data field that comes out of flight planning operations … the end data, will amount to 2 to the power of 500, an enormous number of data units; that’s why we need a smart engine and validation engine to do that. What Honeywell has done with its software is to combine all of those to do the work so that users can concentrate on Operations.

For the last consideration: imagine something happens with the QAR on an aircraft and the airline stops receiving FDM data. Honeywell’s system will simply send an email to the right person and it can be configured so that they’ll know something is happening and can go and check it. Once this is done, then the system helps align everyone on the same page with the fuel program.

irlines are always looking for ways to improve the quality and efficiency of their operations so, in this article, we want to share with you a few highlights from the recent implementation of a program to digitize flight operations manuals and regulatory compliance at Luxair. But first, we’ll give you a brief introduction to the authors and to Luxair.

INTRODUCTIONS

Florence Baudin works with Luxair as Quality Representative in the Flight Operations Department. Her background is in engineering with a focus on structures and airworthiness. Santiago Mesa, Aeronautical Engineer and Sales Executive at Web Manuals, has a background in CAMO engineering in Colombia, working with Jetstream32 in a regional airline where he became experienced at working traditional paper manuals.

Luxair is a small to medium sized regional airline and part of a group in which, apart from the airline, there is Luxair Tours, a travel agency; Luxair Cargo, handling cargo aircraft; and Luxair Services which are ground handling and check-in agents.

The fleet includes four Boeing 737-800 and four 737-700 as well as eleven bombardier Q400. Most flights are in Europe but there are some destinations in Africa and in Asia. In 2018, more than 2 million passengers flew with Luxair — roughly four times the population of the home country of Luxembourg.

DOCUMENT EDITING

How many readers are still using Microsoft Word for editing and authoring their manuals and how many have specialized tools in place? Luxair was certainly a Word user in this context; as were or are many businesses. However, Operations manuals have so many chapters that they’ve become huge and difficult to manage in one document. So Luxair used to separate each chapter into one individual Word document and transform each of those documents into PDFs which could be combined together to create the manual. That process wasted a lot of time in production, combining the different PDFs together, creating bookmarks; so Luxair started to look for tools that could help with this task and be tailored to the company’s specific needs (Word cannot be adapted to meet specific requirements in the business).

That search led Luxair to contact Web Manuals who demonstrated that their solution could be tailored to the needs of the user company and that they could develop features to address any specific user needs. It isn’t so much that it’s not possible to manage manuals using Word but the benefits of using a tool like Web Manuals is that it introduces efficiency into the work with manuals and delivers a number of benefits.

BENEFITS OF USING A DIGITAL TOOL

One important benefit is customization. For example, Luxair has its own layout.

Instead of making the layout in Word and having issues with headers and footers, the layouts were sent to Web Manuals who compiled them exactly as Luxair wanted and that is fixed with no issues. There is also a reviewing process in which specific people can be assigned to review particular documents, to give comments, reject pages and, importantly, they don’t have to scroll through the whole document to find all the changes. It’s possible to go from one change to another which makes the work much easier. And there are a lot of automatic features such as the list of effective pages: any readers who have to edit manuals will know that doing that manually is a nightmare, changing one page then having to go back to the start of the manual to edit the table of effective pages because, if it’s not done right away it’ll be forgotten leading to discrepancies: plus, of course, it’s required by the authorities to do that, so you wouldn’t wish to mess it up. Automatically updating the list of effective pages is a very useful capability. Also, the table of contents is automatically generated plus there is a log of changes in which every change, every addition or removal, is all automatically recorded and the user can opt to show them in the log of changes, which makes the manual easier to prepare.

BENEFITS OF USING A DIGITAL TOOL TO SUPPORT COMPLIANCE

As readers will understand, documents in Operations department are live documents inasmuch as they are constantly changing because of the nature of the document itself since it is tied to regulations and might be subject to many changes from the regulator. That implies that there will have to be constant adjustments to the documentation. Bearing this in mind, Web Manuals has designed a tool that provides linkage between the regulations and the manuals.

Users will always be notified when there are changes by their competent authority; EASA, FAA or other CAAs. This is a further benefit from the software.

Another thing that has been very helpful for Luxair has been the Compliance Library. However users manage compliance, they have to deal with massive books.

Those books are not very easy to refer to every time and Luxair used to manually update each chapter covering the subject of the regulation: that took a lot of time and, every time there was a change in a regulation it was not easy to find where in

the manuals there was a paragraph with a reference to the regulation in question.

Figure 1 is an overview of what the compliance module of Web Manuals looks like. It can be seen that the tab selected is for Air Operations — part-CAT… and that every paragraph and sub-paragraph is listed from which users can link chapters or sub-chapters in their manuals to the requirements of, in this case, the EASA regulation. That helps with the compliance matrix and it also helps if there is a query as to whether the airline is compliant with any particular regulation; the user can look on the screen to see where the airline is compliant. There aren’t just the numbers of the regulations on the tool but also all of the associated text and when there has been a change so that it can be seen where the regulation text has been updated.

the airline’s EFB system (figure 3.1) which Luxair developed in-house — in fact it was a pilot who developed it for pilots so it does exactly what they want. It’s a complete tool with many Applications including a performance tool, mass & balance, a reporting tool and, the subject of this article, a documentation display tool.

This is very helpful for Audits (figure 2) because, usually, when there is an audit, the big book of the manual is required. Now, Luxair does not necessarily need that because it’s possible to simply go to the tool, go through the regulatory requirements and, in front of those will be the relevant chapters in the manuals making it much easier to satisfy the audit. At Luxair, before the Web Manuals tool was available, the IOSA (IATA Operational Safety Audit) process, for instance, was very long but now is much quicker.

That compliance can be exported to an Excel Sheet to create a compliance matrix showing which requirements have been complied with and which

ones have not or are not applicable. And there is an alert to the user when there is a change of regulation so that the regulation watch can be kept in-house and the teams behind the software will send a notification that a particular regulation has changed and will indicate exactly where the change has been made.

That automation of the notifications where there are changes in the regulations is one of the key benefits of the Web manuals solution. Plus, with that list, the user knows where they have to continue to direct man hours in order to be able to maintain compliance.

So far we have covered the authoring part of working with manuals and how compliance can be incorporated in all documents. But there is another very important part to this and that is how does the information get distributed; how to ensure that pilots and crew are always getting the correct and latest up-to-date information. For Luxair, once the documentation is ready, it is distributed to crews via AIRCRAFT IT Operations • SEPTEMBER-OCTOBER 2019• 41

The EFB is simple with each folder named and further folders within each and, if there’s a document like the Operations Manual Part A (figure 3.2) and you click on it, it opens as a PDF viewer.

Changing EFB regulations Santiago Mesa, Sales Executive — Aeronautical Engineer, Web Manuals There is a new EASA regulation which is very important for airlines and especially EFB users since it has come into effect. With it comes the risk that EFB operators could find themselves grounded at worst or at least having to revert to paper copies which, of course, are unlikely to be up to date in airlines and operators who are EFB users.

The regulation in question, EU 2018-1975, has been effective from 9 July 2019. That doesn’t mean that users had to have approval by 9 July but they will at least have to have filed the application for approval under the new regulation with their competent authority.

This new regulation is largely targeting CAT (Commercial Air Transport) operators, i.e. most readers who are required to hold an operational approval for EFB Type B apps. In the past, the requirement was to hold approval for EFB devices (iPad or whatever an airline used) but the new rule is aimed at the software. It is required to ensure compliance with the standards of ICAO so that EASA has incorporated the ICAO standards and recommendations from ICAO into the regulations making it now mandatory to comply with this.

There are also requirements for special operations and special missions. It is not required to hold an approval just yet but it is recommended to be compliant and to have all of these procedures in order — risk assessment of software and so on.

In essence, what this has changed from 9 July is Part-Ops with these having been affected and Part-CAT — it’s good to aware of that as well.

Some of the challenges regarding these regulation changes are, of course, that compliance is required, otherwise, missing the deadline will risk, as stated above, to be grounded or to be

compelled to revert to paper copies which will, most likely, not be up to date. That’s one of the biggest challenges — to remain compliant.

The second challenge, before actually being compliant, will be the need to clarify what are your obligations to your authorities depending on the type of operation and what you are entitled to do.

Also, it is important for compliance managers and the quality departments of companies to ensure a software transition between the non-approved operations to holding an approval for EFB software.

This means referral to not just, let’s say, Web Manuals as the document app but also to flight planners and some other EFB apps.

In total there were 824 single requirements added into the regulation and they are spread across different sub-parts as mentioned above.

What was in place before was not mandatory, it was the AMC 20-25 but the new regulation is mandatory So, in essence, what needs to be done about the regulation is to perform a risk assessment and include all means of compliance into documentation. Also, it is required to provide a new procedures manual that will include the organization’s EFB policy as a consolidated document.

And lastly, those affected will, of course, be required to file their application with their competent authority to get operational approval.

Although that was not required on the 9 July, if, say, there is a ramp inspection, the airline will still be expected to have complied, i.e. filed the application and with the procedures in place.

readers will also be interested to know is that, at Luxair, we have had an EFB class 1 since 2003; switching to EFB class 2 in 2014. The spirit of digitization has been in the business for quite a long time so flight crews and crews are used to it. But it’s still important for flight crew who have not always known iPads to also be able to adapt to this new technology.

A summary of the advantages of using a digital system

Compared to hard copy paper or even a digital tool that is not optimized, such as Word there are a number of advantages. Having digitized documents will help in a lot of ways.

Everything is in a single device where users don’t need to switch either from one document to another or one application to another or to a different device to access, say, a check-list. There is a lot of weight saving (no need for hard copies in the cockpit) which translates to fuel saving. Updating the documentation is very easy, there is a manager where all the documents are uploaded and, once it’s synchronized, the EFBs can each be synchronized and downloaded to the tablet. When the documents have been downloaded, it’s easy to track who has read the document. Also, it’s possible to access the documentation offline which is very important for flights where the EFB is not connected to the Internet.

Then, once the change has been agreed internally, it is submitted to a review for approval and, once it has been approved, it is published with the documentation uploaded to the EFB. But it isn’t only the EFB on which Crews can see the documentation; there is also what Luxair calls crewDoc, an online platform that crew members can access from home via their own laptop where there is the same content as on the EFB. So if, while at home, crew members want to start to look at, say, their next training event syllabus, they can access that information on their computer without having to go through the crew room or to the cockpit to check those documents. Once the updated documents incorporating regulation changes have been published, approved, read and understood by the crews, the requirement for compliance will have been fulfilled.

WHAT IS NEXT?

Luxair has started to use Web manuals but only in the flight Operations department. However, when the solution was shown to other departments, such as Maintenance and Quality, they also became very interested in the process. Luxair believes that it will be a good thing to expand use of this new tool across the whole organization because, as readers will be aware, in one document another document will be referred to or another procedure and, if those links can also be made, it will become an even more powerful tool. That development was still in process at the time of writing. The management of change can be a lengthy process as readers will be aware.

With regards to the application itself, the plan is for it to be more inclusive in terms of the formats allowed to work with the platform. HTML is already incorporated in the application. We know that a lot of readers will be working with FrameMaker, although it is an outdated tool, but the format is allowed on Web Manuals so it is possible to import documentation from FrameMaker in HTML format

and then get it transformed to a more agile type of format that allows a lot of functions to be automated. Also, with regards to XML, although a lot of OEMs like Boeing and Airbus are distributing their manuals on XML, it actually imposes a huge technical challenge because of the nature of the code and the language — users practically need to know how to program or code in order to make modifications to manuals. And since there is a different formatting standard for every type of aircraft, it also creates a lot of work, working with XML formats. However, the plan is to integrate with these formats in the future if that will provide real benefits to users. The way of working round will be with PDFs and with other types of format.

That’s what is foreseen for the future and, as long as there are more formats and the application is inclusive that will allow people to work with different types of documentation and get the advantages that Luxair now enjoys.

The word that occurs in so many discussions and conferences around aviation today is ‘data’ and gathering data is something that is important today in our industry but it hasn’t yet been fully integrated into flight operations regulations, for example. Today, the authorities ask airlines and operators to write four big Operations Manuals (OMs) for parts A, B, C and D, which are very hard to manage. Also, there is information in one document that overlaps with information in another document meaning that there are redundancies between those documents. So, if users or crews are looking for information on, for example, a pre-flight checklist, they would have to look at the OM Part B but if they wanted information about the flight duty regulations, they’d need to open the OM Part A. So why not streamline that information? Does it still make sense today to open documents individually whereas it’s possible to access the data in a streamlined manner?

Let’s hope that the next step from the authorities is to adapt the regulations to what technology can do for airlines and flight operations.

Aircraft IT: How did Safety Line get started?

FC: As a former airline pilot, our founder, Pierre Jouniaux quickly realized that there were often many changes between the flight plans pilots received and what was actually flown, with very few tools available during the flight to accommodate such changes. Tapping into his background as an aerospace engineer he decided to look into solutions that could deliver the best in-flight optimization recommendations to pilots.

He then identified that the flight phase that could benefit the most from optimization was the climb phase, which consumes up to 30% of total fuel for medium haul flights, but it is also the most complex, with many

parameters changing as the aircraft ascends. To tackle this complexity, Safety Line initiated a partnership with academic data science research labs to explore how historical flight data could be leveraged towards optimizing the climb phase.

The result was OptiClimb, a unique fuel efficiency solution allowing airlines to save five to six percent of climb fuel thanks to machine learning performance models for each tail, accurate 4D weather forecasts, and the issuance of customized climb speed recommendations to pilots.

Aircraft IT: What has been Safety Line’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

FC: Our greatest technical achievement to date has been to have built a bridge between aviation and data science that allows airlines to save five to six percent of climb fuel, thanks to OptiClimb speeds computed for each flight using tail specific machine learning performance models computed from historical flight data.

Aircraft IT: What has been Safety Line’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

FC: Our greatest business achievement so far was marking the first anniversaries in 2019 of our OptiClimb contracts with launch customers Transavia France and Transavia Netherlands, the LCC affiliates of the Air France-KLM Group, with yearly fuel savings statistics living up to expectations. We look forward to exploring further savings opportunities with both of these airlines and many others.

I

n this article, I want to share some thoughts on fuel efficiency, including the very important matter of communications; a matter that is sometimes overlooked when we just focus on analyses, big data and continual improvements. What we often forget is how to communicate all that data with meaning to the right people in order to realize changes in the business.

But, before we delve in to main topic, I’d like to tell you something about Volotea, the airline to which all this will apply.

It can be summarized as ‘a way to operate an aircraft, to complete the mission, getting the maximum profitability’, taking into account the conditions that we have, i.e. it might not be the best aircraft, it might not be the best ATC route… but at the end, with a definition, we can do our best to generate the maximum profit or, at least, to burn less fuel and to minimize the additional costs, and that supports the operation.

If we’ve defined efficiency for our purposes in our working environment, how can we measure that? Well, we know that there are cost drivers which are the tools that we have to measure efficiency (figure 1).

What is efficiency — the concept

If we think about efficiency, we are thinking about physics: efficiency is the ratio between useful work and the energy required to do that work. But sometimes it’s difficult to measure the results from an investment and sometimes it’s difficult to measure the amount of energy that has been invested to get a result. However, what happens when we want to talk about efficiency in aviation? There are so many variables that we don’t control and there are so many ways to do the same things plus we have a lot of difficulties defining and refining a proper way to analyze efficiency: • Type of aircraft — depending on the type of aircraft used we can be more or less efficient on the same mission; • Flight management and flight profile — depending on the profile used we will burn more or less fuel but we have to consider all the costs; • Type of mission — this will contribute to fuel efficiency during a flight.

The upshot is a complex environment to define, hence the difficulties to define what is efficiency

Volotea is a low cost carrier based in Barcelona and connecting small cities mainly in France, Italy, Greece and Spain. The fleet currently includes two aircraft types, Boeing 717 and Airbus A319. I joined the business in summer 2016 and, although I started working with Operations in general, that has shifted to a focus on fuel efficiency which has been my main work since 2017, developing improved reporting and new ways to measure the implementation of our fuel management initiative.

energy required to complete the work. There are two types of drivers to consider to measure efficiency. Basic drivers that are mainly used for cost control purposes and advanced drivers or complex drivers that can deliver more meaningful numbers that allow us to work in depth on our efficiency.

Looking at basic drivers like the burn per block hour (Burn/BH), we see these drivers are useful for cost control because companies usually allocate their costs per block hour and per flight hour (FH) per flight. These drivers are very useful for finance reporting. However, for example, for burn per flight hour (Burn/FH), taxi duration of very short flights can have a very big effect. And, we can arrive at wrong conclusions concerning efficiency. For example, for a one-hour flight, there might be a taxi time of 20 minutes or 40 minutes, depending on time of day. The flight that had a taxi time of 40 minutes will exhibit a lower burn per block hour than the one where the taxi time is 20 minutes. But which flight is more efficient?

Obviously, it’s the flight that had the shorter taxi because, at the end, what you want is to go from A to B using the minimum total fuel. This is very complex to explain to Finance because they only look at the high-level data.

It is the same with the burn per flight hour (Burn/FH) but, in this case, it’s affected by the flight direction. If a flight is rerouted because there is a storm, an airspace closure or any other reason, it will exhibit a better fuel consumption per hour than the flight that flew directly from A to B. Again, this can lead us to a wrong conclusion that it was performing better.

We can think about the most typical drivers in the industry which are burn per available seat kilometer (Burn/ASK) or burn per revenue passenger kilometer (Burn/RPK) and how they behave against, for example, Great Circle distance. It can be seen that there is a clear trend that short flights are less efficient than long flights. But for every single distance that can represent a city pair or maybe different city pairs that cover the same stage length several points can be seen. That’s because there are different levels of efficiency for the same type of operation.

At this point, we realized that these kinds of drivers are useful to compare the efficiency of our operation because it takes into account all the things that affect our total consumption covering a distance. With these drivers, we can compare our efficiency for different types of airplane or maybe different routes that cover the same distance.

Who is involved in fuel efficiency?

Once we have this picture of how to measure the efficiency, we’ll need to consider who is involved with efficiency (figure 3).

A fuel efficiency program is very complex. We have to take into account that we have different actors who do not always have the same technical knowledge. And when we talk about efficiency, we have to think about safety because our first requirement in the company is ‘Safety First’, as with everyone in the industry: any fuel efficiency program has to be under the supervision of the safety department.

There are two axes inside the fuel efficiency program. One is the vertical axis that takes into account top management and Operations staff and we can think of that as the strategic line. They work to define policies, target resources, track the performance of projects and implement projects; the strategic and tactical part of the project. Then there is the horizontal axis that covers the operation; flight crews, airports and ATC, the people who are affecting our real efficiency in the operation. Flight crews apply policies, give feedback and share their knowledge while the airports and ATC collaborate with the airline, create new regulations that help us to improve our efficiency and regulate the daily operation.

COMMUNICATION

To have a successful fuel efficiency program, there needs to be collaboration which cannot be achieved without effective communication (figure 4).

Volotea’s reporting philosophy; how do we do it?

We realized that we needed to communicate in a very proper way so we developed a very strong reporting policy. This policy is divided into two methods, depending on the receiver; one based on strategy and one based on operation (figure 5.1).

The message — the right content for the right receiver

If we communicate in a proper way, we will transmit the right message to the right receiver and, at the end, there will be a change in our company or in our operation or in an individual’s behavior.

For example, a problem with a project, let’s say ‘engine wash’, can have a big impact on the operation. What if we try to communicate this idea with just a flat sentence; ‘Oh, we have a delay, we won’t get the savings that we have targeted’.

We are revealing just a small part of the problem and management will not have enough information to evaluate the situation. So, at the end, there won’t be any intervention because they don’t know the real effect of this problem. If, instead of doing that, we give them information to evaluate the project, perhaps by adding to our communication ‘… and it will cost €1m’, they will see the whole picture and, probably, if it’s important for them, will allocate resources. It’s very important that we send the right message to the right receiver. It’s not the same talking to management as talking to flight crews, it’s necessary to tailor the way a message is expressed to the level of knowledge and the level of implication in the project.

In the end, we need to transmit important material with the message. This is a most important concept of communication.

OUR REPORTING PHILOSOPHY In Volotea we understood how important is transmitting the right message, and we developed a strong reporting philosophy. It is based on different timings and reports and, of course, it is different depending on the receiver.

… then, at the end of the year, we summarize all the operations that we have, how was fuel consumption against what we expected, why actual was better or worse than expected, how are other projects and what are we delivering from them, can we improve them? For example, here we have a monthly report showing the trend against the budget because, at the end, what controls our operation is the budget. It’s very important to have the real picture of where we are against where we expected we would be.

For flight crews, and operations, we have, again, daily reporting based on the MyFuelCoach App provided by Skybreathe for pilots — more below. It’s a monthly report that gives a picture of every operating base of the company which is sent to the Chief Pilot who decides how to work with this data. And, finally there is an annual report, not at the same level as the top management report but giving a big picture of what has happened during the year. Here there are different metrics that we provide to our pilots with their burn per flight hour, for example, or the extra fuel that we have used against target and, below target. Our captains feel comfortable with the plan and they understand that we are providing the tools they need. This is on a monthly and an annual basis: only the pilot knows which Captain he is and it’s not shareable, to protect their privacy because we don’t want to punish them, we want to help them.

MyFuelCoach is a tablet or iPad based App that Volotea has adopted for pilots.

In the App, we have a lot of data about their flights so that every pilot can access and interrogate his own flight history, how was the flight, what was his performance and his mileage against the company average.

User experience has been good with pilots able to access their flights (individually and in summary) and they find the App easy to navigate. They feel comfortable using the App and understand what they see. Data is integrated to the system once it has been uploaded to the server and any comparisons are anonymous inasmuch as only the pilot can see their own flights and the system offers them a very detailed report of the flight with matrices that can help to analyze their performances for them to use for self-improvement. There are a lot of matrices and these are clear and offer good definition. Results are normalized against the company performance which all adds to the tools available for pilots.

There are also detailed trajectories and other information relating to performance: it’s all in the App.

Typical interest

When we provided the solution, different users had different interests and within a few months of using the App, we found more or less always the same feedback. People asked how we got the data and how we could be presenting this level of detail. It was because we had integrated a number of different data sources; the software had put it all together and delivered a final result that is a clear analysis, once they understood where the data comes from, they then

We explained that it was anonymous, only the pilot himself can see his own data. It is essential that pilots are happy to have this App because it’s not designed to punish anyone but rather for them to use for self-improvement. Finally, when all that was understood, they agreed that, yes, they liked the data and found that they could find opportunities for improvement.

We started to see variances from the company averages and people asked if we were sure that the numbers were right. Behind the App is a large data analysis with a lot of filters, comparisons and normalization, so that data can be trusted to be accurate. With that assurance, pilots began to understand where they were not doing as well as they thought. Finally, they asked, ‘how can we improve, we want to be the top of the company.’ This is the great value of this kind of communication — give people the tools to evaluate the situation and, at the end, they will develop their own route to improvement.

Feedback from pilot community

We valued the feedback that users gave us and three typical feedbacks that we received were: • From a pilot — ‘Having all the information in just one source is the best thing because we can analyze in detail anything that we want.’

• Another pilot said that — ‘The information is relevant and precise.’

• Yet another said — ‘OK, this is very easy to use and is very helpful to improve the efficiency of the company.’

We are happy with these responses; our pilots are happy with the system and, thanks to these kinds of tools, we have our data available in a useful level of detail.

Evolution of some KPIs since we started using it

Now, I’d like to share with readers some results from Volotea after we started using the App. We implemented the App in 2016 and at the beginning we were learning how to use it. During 2017 and 2018 we started to get more value from the App (figure 6).

We could see that fuel consumption had gone down by 2% for the Boeing 717 fleet and by 3.1% for the Airbus A319 fleet. This is a very good result from my point of view as I deal with fuel efficiency every day. But, beyond those global results, we are able to focus on specific practices that help us to improve fuel efficiency. For instance, using Single Engine Taxi contributed to fuel efficiency improvements for both fleets of 4 pp (percentile points) for the B717s and 11 pp for the A319s. The general trend has been very positive after the pilots started to receive feedback about their performance.

There are other useful metrics (figure 7).

In over two years at Volotea, Jordi has worked in operations engineering, including performance analysis, weight and balance, route analysis and airport studies. During the last year his special focus has been on fuel efficiency, working to define a new way to understand fuel efficiency in the company, involving pilots in the development of new initiatives and ways to optimize operation without compromising safety.

For instance, with ‘Pilot extra fuel’ we saw that, after giving pilots the analysis of flights, they started to better trust the operational flight plan (OFP) because they were able to see that there would be enough fuel to fly their mission. In the end, it meant that, on average, we were carrying 12 less kilos per flight for the B717s and 20 less kilos per flight for the A319s. This was good because it reduced extra weight, which had not been generating any revenue, and further reduced fuel burn.

Finally, looking at the Reduced Acceleration Altitude; pilots have to focus on this during their climb phase but they sometimes do not realize the importance of the practice. However, thanks to the proper communication and giving them the tools to understand it, we found that, for the B717 fleet there was a large improvement of 17 pp while the A319 fleet saw an improvement of 2.4 pp.

We have seen that globally we are improving thanks to the strong reporting philosophy and thanks to proper communication. We now have an overall picture of the topic and a clearer idea of communication. We want the company’s message to be communicated properly and to get the right message to the right receiver.

Renata Niedziela, Managing Director, StorkJet, shares the story behind the most precise Aircraft Performance Monitoring based on QAR data and machine learning Renata Niedziela is the Managing Director at StorkJet. She leads a team implementing the new approach to Aircraft Performance Monitoring. Her adventure in aviation started with programming her own QAR raw data reader and associated analytics tools. Renata holds a master’s degree in software engineering from AGH University of Science and Technology in Cracow and an MBA from Cracow University of Economics.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title and the name of the business?

Renata Niedziela: Renata Niedziela, Managing Director, StorkJet Aircraft IT: How did Storkjet get started?

RN: During my studies I received a request to develop a QAR raw data reader and group of tools enabling analytics to be applied to retrieved data. I already saw huge potential in those data. After gaining commercial experience I finally established StorkJet, five years ago. Our goal is to help airlines reduce their fuel consumption and carbon footprint.

Year on year we have been expanding our team with new members: performance engineers, pilots and data scientists whose knowledge and passion

allowed us to spread our wings. In order to develop such comprehensive software, capable of recreating tail-specific aircraft performance model, a lot of R&D had to be done. Thankfully our potential was recognised by the European Union who awarded us research grants which enabled the mastering of this technology.

Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of aircraft-related software?

RN: The ability to analyze real data, reaching conclusions and optimizing future operations. Every aircraft and flight is unique and there is so much you can achieve with tail-specific analysis. The amount of information stored in the data and the possibilities of how to utilize them seem endless.

RN: Our principle is to deliver the most precise, data driven solutions. Precision is crucial to reach maximum efficiency. That is why we re-invest most of our income back into R&D. We believe that by connecting aircraft performance engineering with data science we can make airline operations more efficient than ever before.

Aircraft IT: What has been Storkjet’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

RN: We developed tail-specific performance models based on flight mechanics and machine learning that can calculate fuel consumption in any atmospheric conditions and flight phases. To

Aircraft IT: What has been Storkjet’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

RN: The revolution in Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) processes. In the standard approach to APM, data processing is a nightmare.

Performance engineers had to use various, complex tools for each aircraft type and run APM in semi-manual mode. Thanks to StorkJet APM, airlines can use one fully automatic solution for the entire fleet. For

example, LOT Polish Airlines can fully unify APM for ten different aircraft types, including medium and longrange Boeing, Embraer and Bombardier aircraft.

RN: Delivers precise aircraft performance for each tail, so that airlines can use them to plan and execute flights in an optimum way and, as a result, reduce the fuel burn.

Aircraft IT: What have been Storkjet’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

RN: What we often see is that the maximum potential in the data cannot be realized, even if the airline really wants to. Reasons vary from third party dependence to legacy technology not able to support new features or procedural aspects. As we are passionate about efficiency it was really challenging for us to accept that. What we have learned is that we shall optimize as much as we can in our field and to be really flexible and find alternative solutions for problems outside our circle of influence.

Aircraft IT: What is new on Storkjet’s development horizon?

RN: Full integration of APM performance models with fuel efficiency solutions — for in-flight and post flight applications. Also we want to expand the scope of fuel efficiency benchmarking services between different aircraft and engine types. As we are able to recreate any flight scenario, we can perform like for like comparison of aircraft operating in conditions specific to any airline. We take into account Cost Index used, distances flown, average temperatures, payloads etc. On top of fuel burn, we also compare flight time and total costs for an airline’s Cost Index.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Storkjet does for aviation customers?

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big

thing in Aviation IT? RN: Aviation IT has changed a lot in recent years. Now it’s time to put all the concepts of ‘big data’ into production. I believe that, as a next step, IT vendors should talk more with each other and integrate their solutions in order to deliver more value to the airlines. For instance, StorkJet integrates with FLIGHTKYES 5D flight planning software.

Aircraft IT: What do you want your customers to say about Storkjet?

RN: That we are the leader in aircraft performance and that it is really easy to work with us. We always focus on finding solutions rather than elaborate on the challenges. Customers’ re-purchase rate proves that such approach works. So far only one of our customers has not expressed an interest in expanding the scope of our partnership… yet!

As a result of these challenges, SAS recognised the need for an enterprise-wide document management solution to enable a seamless process for the maintenance, publication and distribution of flight operations manuals throughout their operation.

As at August 2018, the SAS fleet included 65 Boeing 737-600/700/800; 38 Airbus A320 family (a fleet which is scheduled to grow in the next few years as further aircraft are delivered); eight A330 and A340 and, also scheduled for delivery between 2019 and 2021, eight Airbus A350s. SAS publishing co-ordinates about 200 documents, most of them being SAS Scandinavia including documents on safety, security, flight operations and crew training, ground operations and CAMO. The team also supports other units with, for example, a Safety Feedback magazine and working with the internal communications system.
