By the time that IT arrived on the business scene, aviation was already a mature economic sector with a history that included many generations of aircraft. Since then, the sector has continued to grow and several more generations of aircraft have come and gone. At the same time, the complexity of aircraft has increased exponentially as has the amount of data that they generate. The processes of maintenance are ever more demanding. Keeping track of all this requires ever increasing volumes of records to the highest quality and with comprehensive coverage. Plus, as well as the airlines finding ways to cope with all of that, new airlines are starting, some rising from other businesses that have failed and others starting from scratch. IT has turned out to be an indispensable component in success for airlines and MROs.

In this issue, we have assembled an eclectic selection of IT case studies and white papers covering a range of IT applications in the aviation sector. From China Airlines a case study on how they have implemented a new Production, Planning and Control solution, and the new opportunities for efficiency that has revealed. Air Asia Thailand share with readers the experience of and savings from their

use of an RFID based solution to check the cabin each day. Not only has it saved time and money but has also added to the passenger experience. For our final case study, we look at Heston Airlines which launched during the pandemic and has been able to digitalize its processes from the outset. Comply365 and Vistair announce merger and strategic growth investment from Insight Partners and Liberty Hall Capital Partners

In early January 2024, Comply365, LLC (Comply365) and Vistair Limited (Vistair) announced completion of a merger to create a leading global provider of compliance, safety and data intelligence technologies serving the aviation, defense and rail industries with over 120 customers located in over thirty countries on six continents. In mid-January 2024, Swiss-AS was pleased to announce the success of their collaboration with Luxembourg Air Ambulance (LAA), a renowned operator of life-saving helicopters. LAA is currently renewing its 14 aircraft fleet, consisting of MD 902 helicopters, Airbus Helicopters H145D3 and Learjet 45 jets, as well as a new Challenger 605, and is now successfully live and running with AMOS 22.12.

Overcoming Challenges and Achieving Milestones

The journey to this achievement was not an easy one, as it involved transitioning from their legacy system to AMOS amidst the challenges and disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. After almost three years of the project, LAA’s achievement, despite the obstacles and challenges, is a major milestone that Swiss-AS is proud to have been part of. The AMOS implementation project unfolded with the switch-off of the legacy

system and its migration to AMOS, marking a pivotal moment in their operational processes. Since then, the system has been operating successfully with no significant issues reported.

Elevating Safety Standards with AMOS Airline Edition

LAA chose the Airline Edition of AMOS, running on the PostgreSQL database, to meet their specific maintenance requirements and ensure the highest standards of safety in their daily operations. They have also outsourced the management of their operations to AMOS Operational Services (AOS) in order to further enhance their capabilities. Today, nearly 50 users at LAA are using the new system and its integrated set of standard features. This enables them to efficiently provide line/light and base maintenance services for their own fleet, as well as for any leased equipment, all while adhering to the strictest safety and maintenance standards in the industry.

Magnetic Group selects AMOS

Synchronized software: Web Manuals combines with Air Maestro to enhance aviation safety

In late January 2024, Web Manuals, the world leader in digital documentation for the aviation industry, announced that it has collaborated with safety and operational management solution, Air Maestro, to launch its latest software integration, set to improve the experience of aviation customers globally.

Nina Wedding, Product Manager at Air Maestro, said: “Prior to our latest connector, our customers were required to review and amend regulatory documents in Web Manuals’ platform, meaning that they needed to be reuploaded and redistributed in Air Maestro’s system. Now, we’ve provided the ability to view and download Web Manuals’ documents within our own platform, eliminating the need for document duplication and enabling synchronized folders, categories and alerts.”

Sofia Eckholm, Customer Experience Manager at Web Manuals, added: “Customers can now benefit from synchronization across both platforms. In this article I’m going to take the opportunity to share with readers the story of China Airlines’ integration of information with a domestic organization change. But I’ll start by telling you something about the subject of the study, China Airlines.

CHINA AIRLINES

Based in Taiwan Taoyuan Airport since 1959, China Airlines has a strong safety culture. We fly to over one hundred destinations with more than 12,000 employees. In addition to the main airline, there are two subsidiaries in the China Airlines Group, Mandarin Airlines catering for regional flights and Tigerair Taiwan catering for domestic flights, largely to serve offshore islands. The fleet is currently made up of more than 80 aircraft including Airbus A350, A330 and A321neo as well as Boeing 777ER, B777 Freighters and B747 Freighters, plus B737-800. There are also 24 Boeing 787 Dreamliners on order.

I’m part of the China Airlines EMO (Engineering Maintenance Organization) and in that organization there are three divisions (figure 1).

2025 and 2030, another one will be established specifically for handling Pratt & Whitney GTF engine MRO.

In the meantime, we inaugurated a new Structure Shop for Thrust Reverser (T/R) and Composite Material Maintenance Service. Furthermore, there are plans to open a new two-bay hangar in 2026. Currently, we operate seven hangars capable of simultaneously handling heavy maintenance for up to 10 aircraft. Additionally, we have a 100% subsidiarity MRO company named TAMECO.

In the Base Maintenance department, there are five production lines, each consisting of a Cabin section, a Painting section, and a Structural section. This department stands as the largest within the EMO, boasting a workforce of nearly 700 employees. From 2019 to 2022, our average for aircraft Return to Service (RTS) from Heavy Maintenance exceeded 50. Our clientele includes the China Airlines Group, encompassing Taiwan Tigerair and Mandarin Airlines, along with FedEx and the Taiwan Air Force.

WHY CHINA AIRLINES NEEDED A PRODUCTION PLANNING & CONTROL (PP&C) SOLUTION

There were four key drivers that made us realize that we needed this new solution (figure 2).

The first division encompasses the Engineering Division, which includes the Engineering Department, Planning Department, IT Department, and Material Support Department. Additionally, we have the Quality Assurance Division, consisting of the Quality Control Department, Audit Department, and Standards Department. Of particular note is the EASA Part 147 Training Center within this division.

The primary focus is the Maintenance Division, with Line Maintenance for Line operations. This division also houses a Component Shop for component overhaul and the Engine Shop. In 2025, we plan to open a new Engine Shop, and between

scheduling, especially for heavy maintenance planning; neither did we have digital data to allow us to easily monitor the status of Heavy Maintenance processes. The third driver was about our planning engineers whose knowledge was not easy to transfer, again, especially for the Heavy Maintenance planning. Before PP&C, they used Excel files to plan the Heavy maintenance but nobody cared about the Excel files or that a given aircraft had to be returned to service. The next issue was that our old organization was inefficient resulting in a significant waste of manpower and unclear responsibilities.

WHAT PP&C DOES

For the PP&C solution at China Airlines, we have chosen to cooperate with IFS whose solution is comprised of three parts (figure 3).

Those three parts are Labor, the Plan and the Task. They all have APIs (Application Programming Interfaces) that share data and therefore improve the data in the system. The HR (Human Resources) system deals with Shifts, Skills and Rosters and feeds into ‘Labor’ in the PP&C module. We are using IFS Fleet Planner for Long-Range Planning, Middle-range Planning and Capacity Manager, which all goes into the Plan in PP&C. And, because we are using IFS Maintenix for our MRO solution, Task required, Tools required, Material required and Labor required all get fed into PP&C which will integrate the three input sources.

For China Airlines, the work flow is about our Engineering Planning department who will commit and transfer the work package 30 days before that work package commences (figure 4).

The work package includes all Job Instruction Cards (JIC), such as the Aircraft Maintenance Program (AMP), Airworthiness Directives (ADs), Service Bulletins (SBs), or Engineering Orders (EOs). Upon receiving the work package, the planning engineers in the Base Maintenance Department plan all tasks in the Production Planning & Control (PP&C) system. As heavy maintenance begins, the tasks are assigned through a web-based system on the Intranet (designed by China Airlines), facilitating a seamless and digital completion of the entire process. So, what are the benefits from this chart?

PP&C is currently used by the planning engineers, the Project Manager and the Planning Controller. PP&C users can move the task into the work-package and every task will show on a Gantt Chart (figure 5). Currently, PP&C is not used by mechanics, who continue to use the original system.

What does PP&C do?

to arrange the scheduling for the right places and times to do the work.

If the user clicks on any single task, that will show the details of the task and it will show the capacity versus the manpower required for the task. It will show the materials status and the manpower status with a filter, sorting and tracking those elements. The Project Manager and Planning Engineer can effortlessly monitor these aspects for each task. If you configure the data in the system,

PP&C also generates a daily report showing how many hours have been used for planned jobs and a non-routine report that shows how many hours are being taken up for non-routine jobs. PP&C has one specific function, the Knowledge Base, that can save a plan in heavy maintenance such as for the Triple Seven C1, if it is a good plan, it can be saved to the template, so that the next time there is

Drive Aviation maintenance

The whole implementation of the PP&C solution (figure 6) in China Airlines took six months from kick off to go live.

Of that time, we dedicated four months to developing the workshop solution design for Business Process Re-engineering (BPR) implementation and instruction. Following this, we conducted two trial runs over a two-month period. The first trial run focused on the narrow-body 737-800, while the second trial run centered on the 777-300ER. IFS provided valuable on-site support by sending two consultants to assist with the implementation. Their professional approach and commitment, even working during holidays, were greatly appreciated. China Airlines contributed a team of 15 members. The most critical phase was the BPR, as it involved substantial changes to our colleagues’ procedures, the Operational Procedures Manual (OPM), and over 500 processes.

WHAT CHANGED POST-IMPLEMENTATION

How did China Airlines’ implementation of the PP&C solution affect different divisions and departments? To answer that, let’s look first at our old organization (figure 7).

The organization before we took on PP&C was function orientated; we separated mechanics by their skills. Like the Airframe, Powerplant and General (APG), the Electronic, Radio and Instrument (ERI), Cabin and Interior (CAB) and Structure and Metal Shop (SMS). We had one Maintenance Production Control Center (MPC) with a few project managers in charge of Heavy Maintenance management and monitoring, and the controller for all heavy maintenance aircraft, but they didn’t have the power to control the availability of human

manpower. They needed to request the manpower they needed every day and the section manager assigned the staff to the aircraft. So, implementation of PP&C encountered some problems.

The first problem was an unclear allocation of responsibility because the project managers were responsible for everything, but allocation of the manpower was not within their control. The second problem was inefficiencies because they were spending a lot of their time assigning manpower. The third problem was EASA Part 66 because our new mechanic certificate for EASA required all historical data for that mechanic and they needed to get that. If we were using the old registration, it just focused on the one area, not all areas, so we couldn’t apply for the new certificate from EASA.

PP&C was not just software for China Airlines; it was also a catalyst to let China Airlines seriously consider potential problems in our organization. We spent one year for simulations and for testing, for the trial run and to do the whole new production line (figure 8).

these departments. We have a duty manager who will assign the aircraft to the production lines. We separate the mechanics, the APG, ERI and Cabin mechanics who are sent to every production line and we also keep the structure and the section and the internal shop because they are needed to support the production line.

Also, we have taken three years for training the APG and the ERI mechanics. Right now, the ERI mechanic will know how to change the engine and how to open the right panels. At the same time, we have renovated our office and the Control Room.

At China Airlines, we now also create over twenty reports. The first one was our dashboard (figure 9).

Right now, we refresh the dashboard every 30 seconds, allowing users to drill down into a detailed dataset for each item. The first item on display is ‘where is the aircraft?’ If the aircraft is in motion, the dashboard dynamically updates. The second item shows the number of remaining days. The third item, represented by the circle, is the progress indicator for Heavy Maintenance: if they are behind the total schedule by 10%, the indicator turns amber; if the delay exceeds 20%, it displays in red. This visual cue serves as a reminder for both the manager and project manager, signaling significant delays that require attention and action.

For each task, we want to know details about the delay, how many tasks are open, how many staff are engaged on the task compared to how many were planned, plus we consider the AOG parts and how many of those AOG parts are available right away, how many are on order or how many are still open. And, if there is an RTS (Return to Service) Flight it will show at the bottom of the Dashboard.

After implementation of PP&C, we had to think about the quality for the planning engineers. We created one report to check every day with their KPIs (figure 10).

The red lines show how many tasks need to be complete for the ratio while the blue line is how many tasks were expected to be completed. Every day, using this report, we can check our status and be very careful about our manpower; so, the next one is our manpower chart in real time. Readers will understand, in heavy maintenance we have a huge physical area so we cannot use laptops or PCs everywhere, especially with the Intranet. So, we have designed and developed a new mobile application for China Airlines (figure 11) to work with the PP&C solution.

The concept is that the App pulls data from PP&C, from the Maintenance system, and from our HR system. The first screen in Figure 11 uses the materials list combined with the progress and that can be seen for one aircraft so that users

on any one aircraft in Heavy Maintenance, that will show the task, manpower and material. The task will have another list that will show how many tasks have been assigned with how many tasks have been completed, and every task will show the scheduled hours and the actual hours, in real time. The right screen is manpower minutes. We separate the aircraft into the four parts; for example, the right part is how many tasks (right now we have ten tasks) and 15 staff in this

maybe have some problems such as a material issue, tasking issue and/or mechanic issue which might cause a delay.

For China Airlines, the combination of implementing PP&C from IFS, using the maintenance system and our re-organization to the production line brought about several efficiency improvements.

In the first place, we have reduced total man hours by 5% per year and have reduced multi-crew JIC (Job Instruction Card) manhours by 10% per year. Heavy Maintenance turnaround time (TAT) has been reduced by 13 days per year so delayed returns to service are down to less than one a month. Actual man-hours have increased to 5.5 hours per day for Heavy Maintenance mechanics while planning engineer planning time has reduced by 50%. And finally, which is special for us, we no longer lose any physical Job Instruction Cards (JICs).

creating a data bank and a data warehouse with plans to implement data mining. Also, in recent months, we have kicked off APP Phase 2 with extra functions for the APP. Lastly, we have a new mission for China Airlines because I have been asked to generate the strategic plan for the next five to ten years. We want to create smart hangars using mobility and a smarter warehouse. We’ll be happy to share our information and experience if any readers want to contact us.

THE IMPERATIVE OF DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN AIRCRAFT MAINTENANCE

When talking to industry peers there is a lot of buzz about digital transformation emerging as a strategic response to the challenges faced by organizations in the sector in general and the aircraft maintenance sector in particular. However, most of the time, that talk is about state of the art projects which are quite often very expensive and lengthy to implement, causing other projects to be delayed and/or adding to the backlog. Other examples are that organizations tend to transform paper processes into a digital environment. This way of working cannot be considered as digital transformation due to the risk that it simply perpetuates the inefficiencies inherent in a paper-based process. My take on this is that digital transformation should not just be a technological upgrade but should be a holistic approach to future-proofing an organization. Although many companies have adopted digital signatures, they often overlook

The focus is now shifting towards intelligent, interconnected systems and processes that can benefit from automation and artificial intelligence. For instance, aircraft maintenance can be revolutionized with these technologies. Consider the following scenario: when it comes to daily planning tasks, there are often a lot of repetitive actions involved. These include gathering information from various software applications, such as M&E systems, HR systems, and flight planning tools. Subsequently, a range of manual calculations need to be carried out before updating all the relevant information. However, with the help of

There are very few aspects of running an airline where a digital and mobile tool will not improve the quality and productivity of the process. This case study will be about how the introduction of a new cabin monitoring tool has added real value to the process it improves and the wider airline. But first we should introduce the two businesses who are the subjects of the Case Study.

AIRASIA GROUP

As you can see in figure 1, there are currently 212 aircraft in the whole fleet who will soon be operating under five AOCs from five different countries with five different regulators but with all five running under the name of one airline, AirAsia.

To date, ADE’s digital solutions include the B2B marketplace, AEROTRADE, and their Enterprise Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions ELEVADE as well as Digital Content Services.

WHY CABIN MONITORING WITH RFID?

Let’s go back to 2016 when Banyat had been working with AirAsia for many years. It was well understood that accuracy was always a big issue; so how the airline controlled it and ensured accuracy was also a matter of high importance. It needed the right data to be put into the AMOS maintenance solution which is AirAsia’s solution for its records. Among the many checks needed to ensure safe and efficient aircraft operations, the nightly cabin check is very important.

AirAsia has a number of programs with ADE about digital data solutions but this article will be about the RFID initiative. It is a big challenge for AirAsia to standardize practices across all the AOCs. Even the RFID implementation was not easy because of the varying requirements of each operator in the group but the airline had to make it happen across the network.

ASIA DIGITAL ENGINEERING (ADE)

Briefly, ADE was founded in 2020 so is a young MRO company but not wholly new. The business was originally AirAsia’s engineering arm so the organization has twenty years of airline MRO experience. Now, as a separate business, ADE has a big vision and mission to be one of the most important digital players in the region’s MRO space (figure 2).

However, the challenge was that there are about 180 checks for the cabin of a narrow-body A320 and, when that is multiplied by the 212 aircraft in the fleet, you can imagine how, with manual checks and paper-based records, things might be missed or not be accurately recorded. It was also the case that when the auditor, internal or external, did their audit, the airline could not guarantee 100 percent accuracy of its records because it was a manual process that relied on people. AirAsia wanted to find a solution to improve the accuracy of cabin monitoring and servicing which would improve the process and, by ensuring better cabin condition, would also be good for the image of the airline.

There might also be some repairs needed on damaged seats and equipment. Even life vests can be out of their proper place. The cabin crew does a life vest demonstration before operating each flight and, if the passenger wonders where the life vest is located, they are likely to check under the seat. However, the airline knows that sometimes the life vest is missing which causes the operation of the flight to be delayed. It’s important for AirAsia which aims to optimize aircraft utilization, to have aircraft in the air for, on average, thirteen hours a day. That’s why On-Time Performance (OTP) is really important to the airline. Even spending a minute trying to find a life vest is very important because it is part of

safety and safety is one of the customers’ main expectations and AirAsia’s main objective. But if a passenger pulls the life vest from under the seat, they might even take it as a souvenir. It all means that AirAsia Thailand has to do a nightly inspection at the end of each day’s service to undertake any necessary repairs and replacements. A mechanic or technician had to inspect the cabin every night, a job that not everybody enjoyed. This kind of activity is a time and cost burden for the airline; so, a time and cost-saving initiative was needed. But then Banyat noticed something that gave him an idea of what to do.

On the Airbus A320, there are RFID tags on all of the life vests; Banyat’s idea was, why didn’t the airline use RFID tagging on all cabin items liable to be lost or damaged. AirAsia, asked Airbus whether they could RFID tag all items in the cabin but, as no other airlines wanted it at the time, it was not possible. So Banyat asked the airline’s own engineering staff to help with implementing RFID tagging in the cabin. Having considered the manpower needed to do the job and the cost, the IT department didn’t feel they could do it, plus no other airline had implemented an RFID solution of this sort. So, Banyat looked around for a partner that could help AirAsia Thailand to implement an RFID solution for cabin monitoring. The implementation was done by a Thai-based vendor, as a one-off stand-alone project, but became outdated after a few years due to no ongoing support.

That said, using the RFID in this job delivered good savings. Before the RFID, the nightly cabin inspections took about 60 minutes per aircraft whereas, using the RFID brought that time to around 20 minutes. On a fleet of 210 aircraft whose cabins had to be inspected every night, this represented a significant saving of 51,100 Man-hours a year. These numbers apply where there are missing life vests and other items but if nothing is missing, the inspection can be completed in five or ten minutes. Either way, it ensures that the aircraft can more quickly be made ready to fly the next day as normal.

For example, from 210 aircraft, saving 40 min each adds up to 8,400 minutes saved per night which is equal to 140 hours. In one month of operation, 140 hours a night by 30 nights adds up to a saving of 4,200 man-hours per month. The second benefit, efficiency improvement, results from a checking duration reduced from 60 minutes to only 15-20 minutes per aircraft per check. The final benefit, operational safety, results from ensuring compliance with safety standards by automating compliance checks. And, by using RFID technology, airlines can significantly reduce the likelihood of Non-Conformance Reports plus it also minimizes human errors.

But what impact does RFID technology have on passenger safety and satisfaction levels?

It enables the airline to guarantee that the life vest is on board (good for the airline’s image and critical for safety), guarantee to the passengers and, to the authorities that there is a system for ensuring this and that they can audit. When Banyat tells the authorities that AirAsia uses RFID technology, there is no need

that the airline employs advanced technology.

And, does the integration of RFID technology result in a tangible return on investment (ROI) for airlines? Definitely, as the figures above show, the efficiency gain and cost reduction are the keys in this. Manual checking of the cabin requires more manpower. Using RFID incurs the one-off investment which, in AirAsia’s case was saved in just one year. The cost of an RFID tag today is only about one Thai Baht – roughly one US Dollar for thirty to forty tags. So, when a life vest tag is lost, the airline doesn’t waste time trying to find out why, they just get a replacement. Operational efficiency is driven by the swift inspection process and enhanced compliance. Cost reduction is delivered in several ways: manpower efficiency, preventive maintenance and inventory management.

And finally, using RFID technology aligns with sustainability goals and corporate responsibility initiatives in the aviation industry. It supports environmental sustainability and efficient spares management, plus reduces resource consumption.

Life vest and equipment inspection is a very simple process with RFID based on the LOPA (Lay Out of Passenger Accommodations) in the cabin (figure 4).

Checks can be made with a mobile device because the solution is web-based.

The solution means that AirAsia does not need to worry about authority issues or non-compliance and that they can commit to the passenger that the airline cares for the safety and that all equipment that should be on board will be on board all the time. This prevents AirAsia’s aircraft from being non-compliant because the solution includes alerts that enable AirAsia to detect what is missing on the aircraft and support proper record-keeping.

Not everything has to go into the airline’s AMOS system but the RFID solution can be stand-alone with the life vests and all emergency equipment. The airline can see the digital data and predict the items that might go missing such as life vests and then can make changes to processes accordingly such as making sure that, in the pre-flight safety announcement, the cabin crew remind passengers that they don’t need to take the life vest from under the seat to check it’s there, or take it off the aircraft. On routes where the airline finds a lot of missing life vests, spares can be packed. This sort of thing will help with line maintenance and audit.

THE NEW SOLUTION

The original solution having served the airline well, there is now an updated version from ADE. This new solution is seamless so there are no more issues when the RFID is in the operations. What we have shared above is a very compelling use case of how AirAsia implemented this RFID solution for their life vest inspection in 2016. However, now, some of that original solution has become outdated, technology progresses and, for example, the Windows CE OS is no longer available or supported, plus the solution was developed as a tool to automate a specific process (figure 5).

It was not up-to-date from a technology point of view and the infrastructure that the application runs on is in-house. Although, in 2016, cloud infrastructures were available, they were not very prevalent. Now, in 2024, the technology needed to be refreshed. Which was where AirAsia Thailand approached ADE to help solve these technology issues. The airline wished to future proof the scanner using technology that was dependent on mobile apps and an Android-based device.

Secondly, AirAsia were concerned about where the application runs, so ADE developed it as part of their SaaS solution which is ELEVADE FLEET where the new cabin solution runs on ADE’s cloud-based system GCP (Google Cloud Platform), which has Micro-service architecture which simplified the integration with APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). Also, with the new solution, real-time 2-way communication is possible.

When AirAsia Thailand implemented the original cabin solution in 2016, they had to take care of the operational and the technological aspects of the implementation and now, with ADE, they will benefit in three ways (figure 6).

Predictive Maintenance (PMx) is part of an ecosystem of digital solutions for the aviation aftermarket that has been maturing over the past 20 years. We can describe ‘digital aviation’ in a general sense as: knowledge or insights embodied and delivered via software on, at, or about an aircraft to deliver value to aircraft operations. Operations can be divided into major verticals, including Flight Operations, Technical Operations, Ground Operations and Passenger Operations. Focusing on the Technical Operations vertical, we can categorize the aftermarket digital offerings into several key capability themes. These themes include:

• Digital and Mobile Maintenance Documentation;

• Maintenance Planning / Systems of Record;

• Electronic Tech Log / Electronic Logbook;

• Digital Records Management;

• Lifecycle Optimization Tools;

• Proactive and Predictive Maintenance / Health Management. The offerings are highly inter-connected. For example, PMx depends on having digital data that could come from one or more of the different record and documentation systems. The capabilities of the digital solutions are enabled by the rapid advance in Data Science and AI, on-board Data Acquisition, and Edge Computing and Data Connectivity.

Predictive Maintenance emerges as the area with most promise and investment within the Technical Operations digital ecosystem. Recently there have been multiple new entrants into the market space keen to promote the value proposition of PMx to the operators. That value proposition includes quantifiable benefits spanning operational performance, asset utilization, and labor costs and utilization1.

To clarify some terminology, Predictive Maintenance is a sub-category of Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM)2. ‘Health Management’ refers to the use of data to manage the current or future serviceability of an asset.

‘Serviceability’ is the degree to which an asset can achieve its intended mission. Of course, in the case of IVHM, the asset is a ‘vehicle’ and, for the purposes of this article we’ll assume that the vehicle is an aircraft or is related to aircraft or their operations. Aircraft Health Management, Airplane Health Management and

Engine Health Management (EHM) are specific applications of health management to assets. ‘Proactive/Predictive Maintenance’ are complementary terms, and related to Health Management, but with focus on actual maintenance activities. Proactive Maintenance is using data to manage a condition or failure which has already occurred. For example, moving the planning to the ‘left’ so the fix/fly decision can be made as soon as possible, with the highest degree of accuracy, in the most efficient manner possible. Predictive Maintenance builds upon Proactive Maintenance to use data and information to predict, before it happens, and with a reasonable certainty, that a failure or condition which will impact serviceability will occur.

A GROWING LIST OF PMx INDUSTRY PARTICIPANTS

We can observe through publicly available information the on-going transformation of the PMx ecosystem, with innovations in the established aftermarket participants such as Engine and Airframe Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), and accelerated activity by Equipment Providers, Operators and Independent Providers.

From a historical standpoint the Engine OEMs were the original pioneers of PMx and health management, making significant investments in and progress on engine health management, pathing the way for much of what would come later. This focus continues today, as the engine maintenance aftermarket is a vast part of the MRO landscape, and PMx is a major enabler of engine maintenance programs. Examples of Engine OEMs focused on PMx include General Electric, Pratt and Whitney, Rolls-Royce and Safran.

Airframe OEMs such as Airbus and Boeing have each had significant focus on health management offerings for over 20 years. The reasons for this are obvious. Airframe OEMs and Engine OEMs have the major stake in the efficient operation of their deployed fleets, and an imperative to maintain product intimacy with the in-service aircraft for continued design improvements, along with normal aftermarket revenue imperatives. Airbus goes to market with its Skywise3 suite of offerings (in partnership with Palantir, one of the independent providers discussed below). Boeing offers Airplane Health Management (AHM)4 and the recently announced Insight Accelerator5. Embraer has an aftermarket health

management offering called Aircraft Health Analysis and Diagnosis (AHEAD)6.

Tier 1 Equipment Providers are increasingly active within the PMx domain. A Tier 1 supplier is a company that supplies components, or services directly to the assembly plant. These providers supply systems large and small, some of which are the equipment being monitored (e.g., an auxiliary power unit) or are core aircraft capabilities such as integrated avionics suites. Equipment Providers who are active in the PMx aftermarket include Collins Aerospace with its Vehicle Health Monitoring Systems (VHMS)7 and its Ascentia8 AHM platform, and Honeywell with its Forge Flight Efficiency Analytics Platform9. Parker Aerospace is also investing in PMx via design and build predictive algorithms in cooperation with their manufacturing division engineering team.

Jeff Smith, Head of Digital Product Programs at Parker Aerospace says, “Parker Aerospace is very focused on predictive maintenance. We are actively pursuing direct data sharing agreements with operators and platform owners and have built a robust data science team to understand data associated with the operation of our parts while on-wing of the aircraft. Knowing when a part is starting to fail helps us engineer more reliable parts and helps our customers reduce cancellations and delays.”

For commercial Operators the imperative to remain profitable and competitive continues to motivate the majority to use at least one PMx solution. In recent years we have also seen operators evaluate and deploy multiple PMx solutions to maximize the realized benefits. For some larger airlines their size and scale points to the efficacy of investing in in-house capabilities. Operators do have some key advantages with the PMx value chain. Recently we have seen Operators extend these in-house capabilities into the aftermarket via their aftermarket commercial entities. For example, Lufthansa Teknik offers their AVIATAR suite of digital offerings which include their ‘Condition Monitoring’ PMx offering10. Notably, AVIATAR is part of the Lufthansa Group’s Digital Tech Ops Ecosystem which also includes AMOS maintenance planning software and FlyDocs digital records software11. In addition, the industrial branch of the Air France-KLM group has launched Prognos, their aftermarket predictive maintenance solution12 13

Independent Providers make up a diverse group, some of which are focused primarily on the data science angle of PMx, while others approach the problem from a data acquisition standpoint. Examples of Independent Providers who approach PMx from an analytics standpoint include Palantir14, SparkCognition and Freya Systems. As mentioned above, Palantir is an example of a large analytics provider extending into PMx, among other applications. In a similar way SparkCognition15 also applies AI to PMx related problems. We also see smaller analytics companies which are exclusively focused on Aviation such as Freya Systems16 making advances in PMx.

increase in both positive outcomes and the use of PMx in the aviation space, our primary niche. With the improvements in sensor data capture on the aircraft and MRO digital transformation initiatives which are improving maintenance records, data fidelity is improving daily. We work in tight collaboration with Subject Matter Experts who grow ever more excited about the significant results we can regularly deliver with custom Machine Learning / Artificial Narrow Intelligence solutions due to these data improvements.”

Other Independent Providers bring data acquisition and connectivity to bear to the problem of PMx execution. For example, Shift517 is focused on Cyber Resilience and PMx via increased data observability through edge computing and AI. Teledyne Controls offers a PMx solution18 based on Quick Access Recorder (QAR) data for selected aircraft systems, leveraging their broad data acquisition portfolio. FLYHT Aerospace Solutions provides PMx aftermarket solutions19 leveraging their air-to-ground connectivity capabilities.

While not an exhaustive list of PMx participants, we clearly see a drumbeat of continued focus and investment by an increasingly diverse set of PMx actors.

A REVIEW OF THE BASIC PMx VALUE PROPOSITION

It may be a surprise to some that PMx might increase maintenance costs. Fundamentally, the operators pay for the scheduled maintenance, and with additional charges for any unscheduled maintenance. PMx triggers additional unscheduled events which incur the associated costs. PMx is only beneficial when the cost is offset by the value of improved Serviceability. Within operational performance the area that most people are aware of is the idea of reducing schedule interruptions (e.g., delays, cancellations, and air turn backs). If we go deeper into the delays area, we can divide this into a reduction of the number of delays and a reduction in their duration — i.e. delays still take place but through PMx activities they can be reduced in length. Another key

operational performance area is the reduction of minimum equipment list (MEL) items, or reduction of dispatch deviations. That is, the reduction of times when we dispatch the aircraft with items against the MEL; by reducing these there is a quantifiable value. In addition, by operating with fewer dispatch deviations, airlines can avoid both reduced performance penalties such as reduced fuel consumption and onerous performance limitations such as ETOPS limitations. Perhaps the most significant saving in this area is the reduction of unscheduled maintenance. That is, maintenance which might have been done in an unscheduled fashion that can be scheduled into an appropriate scheduled maintenance slot via predictive maintenance awareness provided through PMx (figure 1). Lesser known benefits from PMx include sustainability benefits20, regulatory compliance and cyber resilience.

Lifecycle Optimization (sometimes called asset optimization) is a broad topic which is receiving increased attention. The goal of asset optimization is to get the maximum benefit for an asset throughout its lifecycle; to create more capacity in the system and reduce the cost of ownership. An asset can be an aircraft, an engine, an APU, or any sub-assembly worthy of optimization. The data and health information created via PMx is a key part of the asset optimization calculations. In addition, the efficiencies which flow from PMx support lower parts and subassembly consumption, especially those which might involve rushed shipping of parts or even borrowing of parts from other airlines.

PMx offers measurable and quantifiable savings for both labor and maintenance costs. For instance, the effort it takes for maintenance planning can be reduced because of a forward-looking, predictive situational awareness. In addition, the maintenance control function within an airline is much streamlined

with this forward-looking information. Aircraft turnarounds are more efficient with knowledge of the aircraft’s health at landing. Of course, reducing no fault founds (NFF) and the accompanying shop maintenance cost is another direct savings within the maintenance cost area.

REALIZING PMx VALUE

We have observed that intelligent PMx end users gain significant value from their PMx investment by changing their operations, maintenance planning and spares management practices to effectively act on PMx derived insights. For the many operators starting on the PMx journey, the inherent difficulty of deployment at an enterprise scale is often overlooked and underestimated. Each airline has its own rules and operations philosophy. Each aircraft has its unique history built up from its flight and maintenance history. While the PMx solution provides a platform for data consolidation and analytics, the operator needs to make PMx choices according to its business and fleet character. While there are many lessons that could be learnt from others, the PMx model for each airline is unique. Figure 2 shows a simplified PMx deployment process broken into five major steps.

• Knowledge Development and Maintenance: How to acquire and sustain the resources in engineering analysis; data science and other analytics required to create and maintain a usable set of knowledge which supports the scope of the PMx project?

• Delivery and Action: How to establish and embed new working practices so that all the users and stakeholders within their job roles across the enterprise can effectively leverage the PMx insights to support operations decisions for maximum business return? Also, how to deliver the decision support information to a global end-user community within their various job roles? The feedback loop from Delivery back to Knowledge Development is also a fundamental requirement of any PMx. That is, are the PMx recommendations effective, and how can they be improved and updated.

The first four steps cost investment. The PMx deployment returns value only if the final step delivers business benefits beyond the investment.

PMx READINESS

There have been major PMx signings announced in the last 12 months. The PMx technology providers are presenting use cases and can demonstrate that PMx technology is ready.

The new PMx signatories are convinced about the potential business benefits. However, many are attracted by the promise of PMx but do not necessarily understand the associated business transformation requirement to reap the benefits.

The first hurdle is training. Some PMx participants are not sure who to send to the PMx training. Engineering specialists rising through the ranks from licensed engineers/technicians did not enter the career because of their aptitude in statistics and mathematical modelling, much less programming. Establishing a PMx function to generate usable insights could need new talents and the building of cross functional teams.

To deliver demonstrable business benefits, PMx alerts and warnings need to be acted on and effects measured. It is the airlines responsibility to act on them and decide on additional inspections or parts removal. There are instances where these work instructions were pushed back when they were issued without reasoning that the engineers can understand. There is also the practical argument of whose budget should the PMx triggered work be charged to.

David Miret Mora, Technical Director at AJW Group21, emphasizes the need for collaborative discussion among aviation stakeholders to address the regulatory and contractual complexities related to Predictive Maintenance removals. He points out uncertainties in scenarios like finding no fault in a shop check (NFF — No Fault Found) and questions whether the part should be set to full life or only for the remaining duration from the removal point. Additionally, Mora suggests reconsidering the approach to Beyond Economic Repair (BER) or Overhaul, emphasizing the impact on the cost benefits of PMx implementation. These issues are not showstoppers to adopting PMx. However, they are important ones to address before successful PMx roll out.

Given the above, one can make basic assessments of the relative advantages and disadvantages the different participants bring to the various Value Chain elements. This is by nature an inexact and subjective assessment, but it takes into account one or more PMx solutions, the value chain and what providers can or

Ultimately, the full PMx Value Chain must be executed for value to be delivered. However, the actual execution of the required value chain is not trivial. This can be done by one or by multiple participants. Each PMx participant brings their own technical specialization, business objectives and intrinsic advantages/ disadvantages to the PMx ecosystem. Each has an important role to play, and an opportunity to deliver meaningful value to operations. For these reasons, investment, and innovation in PMx is poised to continue for the foreseeable future.

CRANFIELD UNIVERSITY IVHM CENTRE

The Integrated Vehicle Health Management (IVHM) Centre is a joint effort by industry and academia to develop state-of-the-art capabilities that change the way services are provided today. IVHM is the unified capability of systems to assess the current or future state of the member system health and integrate that picture of system health within a framework of available resources and operational demand. It is a very wide-reaching capability encompassing: business cases and models; legislation, certification and standards; architecture and design; as well as algorithms for diagnostics, prognostics and reasoning.

The IVHM Centre was launched in 2008 by Cranfield University, Britain’s premier postgraduate, research-intensive university, together with Boeing, Rolls-Royce, BAE Systems, Meggitt and Thales. It is located at Cranfield University in the UK. The Centre is globally recognized, having defined the subject area, and is further developing new areas of expansion. The development of the Centre, along with other areas in the University, significantly contributed to the creation of the Digital Aviation Research and Technology Centre (DARTeC). Through DARTeC, the IVHM Centre leads the MRO (maintenance, repair and overhaul) developments and activities with expertise and capabilities in UAV robotics NDT inspections, SHM sensor monitoring, and advanced digital technologies, such as artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins (DT), tools that could be used to synchronize, monitor, and improve all processes related to aircraft MRO.

The IVHM Centre combines technology, business and technology transfer solutions. We have a robust innovation cycle and applied research demonstrators with access to a world class IVHM community and new market opportunities, which influence development of industry standards and policies.

DR IP-SHING FAN

Dr Ip-Shing Fan is a Senior Lecturer in Enterprise Systems at Cranfield University, leading the Digital MRO effort in DARTeC, supporting aviation transformation in operations and maintenance. He is a recognized industry expert in Digital MRO and IVHM. He also leads the Digital MRO and Hangar laboratories in the Cranfield DARTeC Initiative, a realistic representation of airport ramp and hangar environment supporting advanced research on aircraft digital twins. He is the Course Director of the MSc in Aviation Digital Technology Management.

John Maggiore is a senior aerospace leader and consultant. A former Boeing executive leader, John spent more than two decades developing an industryleading portfolio of digitally driven capabilities deployed across the globe. TvdB: Ecmanage started around thirteen years ago. Our director, Ron Wessels, always worked in the

workwear industry, but noticed that there was something missing. The ordering process of workwear, uniforms and protective clothing was always quite the hassle and resulted in a major overhead cost for companies. The first customers with our wardrobe management system were therefore keen to start saving both time and cost using our portal. Over the years, Ecmanage expanded

Aircraft IT: What has Ecmanage’s greatest business achievement been to date, and why?

TvdB: Throughout the years, Ecmanage has been active in many different industries. But our latest new industry, the aviation industry, is the one we are most proud of. Within a short time, many aviation companies, such as the Royal Dutch Airlines (KLM) and Brussels Airlines, were making use of our wardrobe management system. With the use of Ecmanage, they reduced their internal hidden cost and got clear insight in the ordering process, resulting in a better handling and distribution of their uniforms/ corporate wear. Other customers who started working with our portal are Eurowings and Cologne-Bonn Airport, to name a few.

Aircraft IT: What have been your disappointments and what have you learned from them?

TvdB: Despite our strong efforts in expanding our business towards other countries across the world, we realized that not every country is ready to implement our system.

Based on this experience, we are more careful in choosing the right business areas and countries to expand to.

Making a good digital start at Heston Airlines

Edgaras Knyzas, Head of CAMO, Heston Airlines shares the start-up airline’s experience of working with OASES right from the outset

One of the purposes of a case study is for readers to learn how any new solution might work in their airline, their working environment. To do that, it’s first necessary to learn something about the airline that is the subject of the case study. So, we’ll start with some information about Heston Airlines.

HESTON AIRLINES

Based in Vilnius, Lithuania, Heston Airlines was set-up in 2021 during the pandemic and the main reason for starting the airline was that there were a lot of aircraft available in the market at good prices at that time. The founders used that situation to their benefit to make a fast start with a new airline which currently operates 15 aircraft of which 12 are from the Airbus A320/321 family while a further three are the larger Airbus A330s. We operate ACMI and Charter with world-wide operations. In the northern winter season, we fly to destinations such as Nigeria, Uzbekistan and Dominican Republic: during summer operations our services are focused more on Europe where we fly from Norway, Finland and Germany on behalf of operators such as SmartWings and Condor.

THE CASE FOR IMPLEMENTING OASES

As a start-up airline, Heston had no legacy of processes with pain points to address and when I started with the airline, OASES was already in place. However, my understanding from colleagues with previous experience in other airlines was that they used to manage aircraft maintenance using in-house, small software solutions or even, if the fleet was not too large, would track the aircraft on Excel spreadsheets. The pain was lack of automation or any automatic notifications of due dates. It was hard to generate a work order but, frankly, all of these issues are addressed in OASES because the solution makes it much easier to manage a bigger fleet with more complex aircraft. It’s theoretically still possible to manage a small fleet with few aircraft on Excel spreadsheets but that approach is highly susceptible to human factor errors which is why we need tools that allow the automating of processes and that will eliminate the errors that could be caused with human interventions.

because the founders were familiar with the system and already considered it to be a balanced solution for a start-up airline. With a cost range that fitted the budget and the quality of provided services being equivalent to the cost, we also found it to be a cost-effective solution.

THE IMPLEMENTATION

As with implementing any solution, it was important to train people up to the level needed to leverage the full value of the solution and to ensure that they understood the software. Following that training, we imported the first aircraft into OASES. After the first few aircraft had been imported to the system, processing the rest of the fleet was straightforward because the personnel were familiar with the process.

Heston Airlines was developing its various processes around the system at the same time that the implementation was underway. OASES, as a system addresses Figure 1

In general, OASES creates a tool that delivers everything the business needs to manage the continuing airworthiness of the aircraft. If you build your processes around the system, you don’t need to invent new ways to manage airworthiness because there is already the tool with OASES to do everything that is required by the regulations. OASES offers a structure that is useful when starting an airline.

As a start-up airline, there were lessons to be learned and OASES was a valuable tool to use in that. For example, for reliability monitoring of the aircraft, there are some very good tools in OASES, reliability reports that can be exported from OASES as well as a repetitive defect tracking module (figure 3).

LESSONS LEARNED

Having these tools has identified for us things that we need to do. Another thing is that, when we started, OASES was provided through a sub-contractor and we later transferred to the OASES contract being directly between Commsoft and Heston Airlines. Taking the data from the old system through the sub-contractor and importing it into Heston Airlines’ OASES meant some work before everything was running smoothly. The lesson was that it’s best to start with a direct contract between the airline and the software vendor. If sub-contractor services are needed the access can be granted to the sub-contractor to use the airline’s OASES software.

and preparing new employees for using the system. At the beginning, there were only a few people involved in Heston, so it took three or four months from the first contact with OASES until the induction of the first aircraft.

There was no specific need to get approval from regulators for OASES but, of course, the national authority had to approve the whole organization with its processes. So, our Continuing Airworthiness Management Organization (CAMO) was approved by the Lithuanian National Aviation Authority and the processes that work with OASES were also approved together with that.

FUTURE PLANS

Heston has fleet expansion plans in the near future to double the fleet in two to three years and we see the OASES solution as a good fit for that. What we are also planning to do is to use the API (Application Programming Interface) services provided by the tool to link the OASES software with our other flight schedule management tools which will allow us to automate part of the data input from those systems directly into OASES and reduce the manpower needed to manage all of the records.

OVERVIEW OF OASES

OASES is designed to enhance the efficiency of aircraft maintenance and fleet management processes. Tailored to meet the intricate demands of the aviation industry, OASES stands out for its ability to streamline airworthiness compliance and maintenance planning processes, making it an indispensable asset for airlines, maintenance providers, and aviation leasing companies seeking operational excellence and regulatory compliance.

Production

The production module provides real-time visibility of task status and automatically generates reports on KPIs, such as budget vs actual labour expended, defects raised, and materials issued or returned. You can plan resources, from hangar level down to individual tasks. All work cards may be bar-coded, which makes it easy to capture work in progress data. As the employee number, materials used and start and finish times are recorded, it enables fast and efficient analysis of the task’s progress.

Line Maintenance Control

It integrates planning and material control functions to intelligently and automatically reserve stock or send a picking notification to stores. You can see all short-term scheduled activities, component removals and defect rectifications — forecast on a single screen, and automatically create and send LMC worksheets to the relevant workstation. You can also view defect history to identify problems faster.

Material Management

The Material Management module helps users improve the cost-effectiveness of their stock control and ensure availability when required; no waiting for parts to arrive, no delayed schedules, no loss of income (figure 5).

The Line Maintenance module enables you to integrate data from many sources (such as electronic tech logs) to improve short-term maintenance planning, and ensure defects are rectified (figure 4).

You can even check stock and issue parts on the move with the OASES mobile app. Automatically log parts in and out, use RFID for tool control, create requests for quotes, send orders and pass through to accounts for payment.

For deep coordination, analysis, and reporting across all financial aspects of the business, check out the Commercial Management module. You can accurately track and invoice labour and materials for third party work, simplify processes and analyse financials in real-time to make operational changes as needed. Commercial Management is also used for the admin processes around invoicing, cross-charging, forecasting, and reporting.

Heston primarily uses the Continuing Airworthiness and Planning modules.

Continuing Airworthiness

The Continuing Airworthiness module is used to ensure aircraft are maintained in a condition for safe operation. This module facilitates comprehensive oversight of maintenance records, airworthiness directives, and service bulletins, ensuring that all maintenance activities are performed in accordance with strict regulatory standards. It automates the tracking and management of critical airworthiness data, significantly reducing the risk of non-compliance and enhancing the safety and reliability of the fleet.

Planning

Launched in 2021, Heston Airlines is a charter airline based in Vilnius, Lithuania serving as a supplier to airlines and customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa with a fleet of Airbus A320-200, A321 and A330 aircraft. As an ACMI and charter airline, Heston flies to Africa and Caribbean destinations in Northern winter, and mainly European destinations in Northern summer.

Aircraft IT: Your name, your job title, and the name of the business?

Paul Lynch: Paul Lynch, Group Managing Director, Aviation at Aspire Software.

Aircraft IT: How did OASES get started?

PL: Commsoft is now 50 years old and it started by providing software for Ground to Air Communications. We now position the business as OASES rather than Commsoft.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives OASES?

PL: Our owner is Valsoft who acquired the business in 2020. Valsoft operates its acquired companies

through the Aspire Software division. They now own over 80 software businesses across the globe who have the same mandate. Grow profitably by delivering value to customers and remaining relevant.

Aircraft IT: What has OASES’s greatest business achievement been to date, and why?

PL: I can only speak to last few years where obviously surviving the turmoil of the epidemic and, more importantly, helping our customers to do so was a major achievement.

Aircraft IT: What have been your disappointments and what have you learned from them?

PL: OASES is a sophisticated piece of software,

providing mission and safety critical functionality to its users. With that sophistication comes complexity in the architecture and implementation of functionality. This complexity is often difficult to explain to the users who are, typically not IT experts. They do not understand how the complexity impacts software development. So, we are working on far clearer Roadmaps, Service Levels and the communication of these.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what OASES does for aircraft maintenance customers?

PL: OASES provides mission and safety critical maintenance services to CAMOs, Airlines and MROs.

Aircraft IT: What do you feel will be the next big thing in maintenance Aviation IT?

PL: One of the consequences of the Pandemic was the acceleration of Digital adoption, both in terms of accelerated fleet renewals and end user expectations. At the heart of this will be the enormous increase in Digital Data pushed out from new digitally enabled aircraft to ground-based systems. The expectation of the Ground Systems is that they will be able to digest the data and provide insights and actions to users in near real time. The end users will interact solely through digital interfaces.

We have partnered with Cranfield University to understand this evolution and the impact on IT systems. This

requires that Next Gen Digital MRO will be Cloud based with multiple interfaces into associated systems and with new digital-only end user experiences. Machine Learning and AI will, over time, accelerate the provision of actions from this data. We are already deploying AI tools internally to improve business efficiency. This vision underpins our roadmap and investment plans.

Applying generative AI to your mission

Allan Bachan explains why it’s important to know what you want your AI to do

Deciding whether to use artificial intelligence (AI) no longer seems the most important technology question for leaders and business strategists. It’s clear AI is here to stay so, today, the big question is ‘what AI model is best for your needs?’ Without a clear understanding of exactly what your AI solution should be doing, unleashing its power may seem less like a race to the finish line and more like a stop and go commute through heavy traffic.

As you head down the AI path, a wise practice is to first perform a structured requirements

assessment. A basic chatbot (or virtual assistant), for example, can only perform a limited number of static input-output tasks while a generative AI can take over a conversation, continuously improve, and requires far less training oversight from humans. In performing your assessment, it’s equally important to also weigh the costs of mitigating risks that generative AI can introduce just as carefully as the cost of tools and development.

Generative AI means just that: that it generates something new based on a pattern it’s observed from the data it was provided. The larger the data

set, the greater variety of content the AI can generate with confidence. However, when the AI lacks confidence in its data set, that’s when you can run into trouble with generative content.

Unlike traditional AIs, a generative AI can’t say “I don’t know” so it must fulfill the request. If that request is out of scope of its language model, the generative AI may struggle to force patterns where none exist. The challenge then becomes: When you can ask an AI any question in the world, how do you keep both it and your users on track to fulfilling the purpose you set for it?

FINDING THE AI MODEL TO SUIT YOUR NEEDS

If you’ve been anywhere near a news article this past year, you may have read about flashy AI apps such as ChatGPT, which uses a large language model (LLM) to showcase its ability to learn and converse on its own.

An LLM is a neural network that contains billions of parameters and uses deep learning algorithms to mimic human understanding and teach itself. It can be trained on a massive quantity of unlabeled data, which means that a human hasn’t had to sort and label that data first — a significant advantage over other models.

There are also different sizes of language model to consider. Smaller than the generalist LLM, a fine-tuned language model takes a model that has already been pre-trained for a given task and adjusts its training to make it a more effective specialist. Even smaller still is an edge language model which has kept its data set purposely small to grant the most control and quickest response times.

For ICF’s clients, supervised training, sometimes called human reinforcement learning, of a smaller specialist model provides the reassurance that every single piece of AI training data has been vetted by a human. Edge solutions in particular also tend to be less expensive, faster to run, and they can function offline if they’re downloaded into an app. This can be critical when the rapid response time of the AI is the highest priority. A good example of edge AI is the Tesla self-driving car.

Human-reinforced AI often appeals to clients or any sector in which it is critically important to have 100% control over both response content and user-generated data. With a restricted language model, the range and flexibility of responses is limited but there is the assurance that nothing goes out to the internet that could train other open AI models. A self-supervised generative AI, on the other hand, has user-generated data in its training. The risk for some organizations is twofold: that these

responses, based on observations of user data, are not fact-checked and that there is no way to guarantee that user data is protected if it’s been incorporated into the LLM.

OUR EVER-EVOLVING USE CASE

We needed to develop a use case for generative AI to help with the evolving needs of aircraft maintenance. For our simulation project, we created a single repository of a fleet’s technical and controlled manuals. This included IPC, AMM, SRM, WDM etc. as well as all the internally authored procedural manuals like the GMM, TPM RSM, QCM etc. We also added all of the airport manuals for a particular station. Further, we added all of the aircraft maintenance history for the respective aircraft and the fleet type (in this case A320s) inclusive of heavy check routines, non-routines and aircraft maintenance logs defects and rectifications. Imagine this repository now having all of the data from the approved OEM sources and also the operator’s total documented experience with this aircraft and fleet type.

Next, through simulations, we created a structured method of making intelligent inquiries of this knowledge source. We asked the system “What is the recommended corrective action for a hard landing by aircraft XXX at airport YYY?” Within 15 seconds, we had a full list of actions to take, in sequence, complete with references to the approved manuals, and with some explained logic, from the data, of why that action made sense — for both the

airport and the aircraft. We then validated this with a team of aircraft maintenance engineers and technicians, and airport personnel. The level of acceptance from that team was 93% and above.

Now, is this tool ready for prime time? I would say no. There is still a lot of work to be done. Of course, we have been asking a whole lot more questions and refining as we go. More pointedly, how can each pilot reported defect which comes in on the Logbook be directly addressed. However, not all the responses are meeting full consensus with the maintenance teams and / or actions taken. Can you, though, just imagine the possibilities?
