The Rhythms of Home and Island Life
As i mentioned a couple of editor’s notes ago, our Hawaii Home + Remodeling team has joined forces with HONOLULU Magazine. It’s been a joy for me to explore new perspectives on living in our fair city and develop a more holistic understanding of “home” through the food, activities and people I’ve recently had the chance to write about in our sister publication.
One of my favorite interviews so far for HONOLULU was a fun chat with Thunderstorm Artis, the singer-songwriter originally from Haleiwa who electrified stage and screen this season on American Idol. Speaking with me by Zoom from his new home in Nashville, Artis was extremely grateful for his Hawaii fans and ohana who voted him to a top-five finish on the popular reality show. (Check out my short story in the July/August issue of HONOLULU!)
I’ve been an American Idol fan since it launched in 2002 — I remember falling asleep with the phone in my hand as I dialed in for hours to vote for Kelly Clarkson — and I still marvel at the way the singing competition mobilizes nationwide support to uplift folks who are trying to achieve their dreams. To viewers, it’s just a simple vote or two, but to professionals like Artis who hone their craft and share their talents, those nods of public encouragement can mean the world.
Our annual Hawaii Home + Remodeling Readers’ Choice Awards is a meaningful, vote-driven contest as well. We regularly get emails in early spring from local industry pros and businesses anticipating the launch of our online ballot, eager to mobilize their networks and supporters to vote for their companies. For many Island contractors and vendors, being honored in the Readers’ Choice Awards can spark excitement on their teams and lead to growing their business with renewed confidence — a win all around for the industry and community. See our full list of winners and finalists on page 49.
Speaking of celebrating local businesses, I hope you glean fresh ideas from our cover story on the HPM Oahu Design Centers. Our team was there for the grand opening at Na Lama Kukui in Iwilei, and seeing the support from droves of attendees made me excited to watch how the dedicated and talented HPM ohana will shape this next chapter in Honolulu.
This issue is full of stories and takeaways, from smart design moves to local voices worth cheering for. Pull up a chair on your lanai, soak in the summer sunshine, and enjoy the read.
Aloha,

Summertime Blues
hello, july! this month brings visions of lazing by the shore and unwinding at home with a soothing bath after a long day. Living in Hawaii naturally inspires coastal-chic home ideas, and one easy way to keep midsummer vibes going strong year-round is with a base of ocean blues in your design palette. We love this cerulean spalike bath, featuring the “Brin” concrete basin by Kast. Look for sunny hues, clean whites and beachy neutrals in our seasonal finds starting on page 12.
Elevated Amenities, Unforgettable Moments
The Launiu Ward Village residences are an artful blend of inspired design and timeless sophistication. Expansive views extend the interiors, and a host of amenities provide abundant space to gather with family and friends.

Capture the essence of summer at home with colorful and clean looks.
BY HAWAII HOME + REMODELING STAFF
One of our favorite trends in home design is the rise of nuanced finishes — a broader range of hues and textures now appears in appliances, fixtures, stonework and more. Unexpected design combinations open the door to visual storytelling, transforming rooms from simply styled spaces into layered, atmospheric scenes. Here, we’ve gathered ideas for summertime vignettes, from bold pops of color to rich, cool neutrals.
Sunny Day Real Estate
This playful kitchen design by GE Appliances shows how streamlined stoves, ovens, refrigerators and dishwashers make room for graphic prints and vibrant hues to shine. The brand’s curated collections of compact, accessible appliances are ideal for small spaces and accessory dwelling units, while still delivering big design impact.
Plain White Tease Spa-inspired design is trending as self-care and wellness remain top of mind. Comforting, light neutrals evoke summertime ease and provide a clean canvas for layering décor and fixtures beyond the season. In this bath, the striking “Sculpt” hanging lighted mirror by Robern elevates crisp whites with purposeful illumination.
Drops of Juniper Blues and greens are trending in appliances, cabinetry and tile — and Hawaii homeowners are loving the calm, coastal vibe. KitchenAid’s new Juniper finish, a dark green with hints of blue and metallic flake, is an artsy option for going monochromatic with rich, layered tones from the same family.
Islands in the Scene
Beiges and browns bring to mind sun-warmed sand and driftwood at day’s end. Cambria’s Remington Brass quartz in a satin finish pairs beautifully with wood floors, light cabinetry and metallic accents. Its warm tones and brass veining shift with the light, creating a grounded yet quietly radiant effect.

Cooler Than Cool
More homeowners are adding cold therapy to their routines as awareness grows around the benefits of ice baths for recovery and resilience. This sleek design by Kohler x Remedy Place brings that wellness-resort feel home, combining smart features with a spa-worthy look that’s both bold and seriously chill.
All the Small Things
A simple way to refresh your space is by swapping out basic fixtures for ones with more personality. Kallista’s Bezel collection, created with award-winning Italian industrial designers, features faucet knobs with natural stone accents and sculptural shapes. Add them to your bath for an easy touch of European summer getaway vibes.

HPM Design Centers brings its one-stop shop experience to Oahu, with three showrooms featuring the latest in kitchen and bath design.
STORY BY DARLENE DELA CRUZ PHOTOS BY AARON K. YOSHINO AND JONATHAN YOU
On may 4, hundreds of people passed through the halls of the na lama kukui complex in iwilei to celebrate the grand opening of the new HPM Design Centers on Oahu. Excitement and creative energy buzzed throughout the Design Centers’ three showrooms as attendees brainstormed remodeling ideas with HPM sta and took part in product demonstrations.
Kehau Amorin, vice president of HPM Homes and Design Centers, says launching the inaugural Design Centers location in the heart of Honolulu marks a
major milestone for HPM. In 2025, the company celebrates 104 years since it was founded on Hawaii Island — today, HPM is a 100% employee-owned enterprise, steadily expanding across the state with its mission to provide quality materials and locally focused service.
“Each product we carry has been carefully chosen because it suits Hawaii’s unique climate, meets HPM’s high standards of quality, and elevates the aesthetic of a home,” says Amorin. “Our dedicated team is experienced in partnering with the best professionals in the building industry.”

Design Center program manager Kapua Aguiar says Oahu homeowners now get to experience the “one-stop shop” that has made HPM Design Centers a go-to resource for new builds, new construction and remodeling on Hawaii Island, Maui and Kauai. Each Design Center features kitchen and bath vignettes with fixtures and finishes reflecting local tastes. Aguiar, a Hilo native with a background in interior design, works closely with Amorin and showroom managers to identify popular styles.
“Oahu is showing more of a light sage green,” says Aguiar. “Maui’s been loving dark green tones. Hilo leans toward clean grays and whites. Over in Kona, people love that island-living feel with sapele, an African mahogany hardwood that has reddish-gold tones and resembles koa.”
What makes the HPM Oahu Design Centers unique are the three showrooms, each highlighting materials and services for different needs and budgets. Suite 104 features finishes for budget-conscious remodels, including high-quality countertops and HPM’s Akamai cabinetry lines, ready to install on-island. An HPM Home Planning Consultant also works in this suite to guide clients through comprehensive packaged home plans.
Upgraded finishes are showcased in Suite 108, with sleek cabinetry by brands such as Bellmont, Medallion and SmartCucina, along with the latest products by TOTO, Thermador, Bosch and Gaggenau. Suite 109 presents luxe options for upscale projects, including Ernestomeda cabinetry and Miele appliances.
Homeowners can work with HPM’s kitchen and bath designers and product experts to tailor selections from any suite into a personalized remodeling plan. Honolulu showroom manager Taryn Sugimoto says the goal is to “simplify the renovation process” by offering individualized attention that’s often hard to find at big-box retailers.
“Renovations can be overwhelming and costly for homeowners, with a lot of unknowns,” says Sugimoto. “Our goal is to make it easier and less stressful by guiding them through the whole process from start to finish.”
Contractors, architects and designers are also welcome. While HPM’s
Kapolei lumber yard has long served the industry, the new Design Centers offer a more central, collaborative space. Building relationships, says Aguiar, has been the foundation of HPM Design Centers statewide for 26 years.
“We’ve found that people still really value having a knowledgeable person to guide them,” she says. “While tools like AI are helping us, it’s still that human expertise and trust that matter. There’s just so much to know, and it really helps to have someone who lives and breathes this work every day.”
“You’re designing for today,” adds Aguiar, “but also for the future.”

Living in Cinematic Style
Coastal ease meets crisp detail in a new build by Homeworks Construction.
STORY BY DARLENE DELA CRUZ PHOTOS BY PEER FILMS AND AARON K. YOSHINO
When hawaii home + remodeling
visited award-winning director and producer bryan spicer at his Windward Oahu residence, the view from his first-floor deck framed a rare scene: a glassy Kaneohe Bay mirroring the blue sky and rolling mountains in perfect symmetry. A prime setting for quiet creativity and island leisure, the location suits his custom home, designed and built by Homeworks Construction — complete with precisely engineered angles and nuanced finishes that reflect Spicer’s eye for detail and storytelling.
“I wanted a modern house with warmth and charm,” says Spicer. “All the rooms have large, open windows facing across the bay toward the Koolau Mountains. We also rotated the house on the property so that it lines up with picture window views.”
Spicer says he selected Homeworks for the build after seeing projects by the firm in the Diamond Head and Laie areas that he liked. Homeworks president Marshall Hickox, an industry veteran, brings thoughtful solutions that balance practicality and aesthetics — even on the most complex sites with structural challenges.
Drawing on his expertise, Hickox worked with the project team to site the home with just the right offset for pristine panoramas. He also accommodated Spicer’s requests to consider neighboring sightlines and soundproof the roadside portion of the house. The property itself required thoughtful planning to maximize the potential of a steep lot sandwiched between the shoreline setback and the street.
opposite page top: Designed to face Kaneohe Bay instead of the street, Spicer’s home takes in soothing views from every room.
opposite page bottom: Spicer, an award-winning film and TV director and producer, envisioned a new home filled with “warmth and charm.”
right: A large deck spans the length of the home, with space and amenities for both open-air and covered entertaining.
below: Open layouts create seamless transitions between indoor living and outdoor enjoyment, featuring finishes that reflect a modern island aesthetic.
left: The kitchen shines with walnut cabinetry that contrasts beautifully with contemporary stone floors and surfaces.
below: Elyse Grable, interior designer at Homeworks, says the pass-through awning window in the kitchen is one of her favorite features of the project.
opposite page: The sophisticated palette of elevated neutrals carries through the two-bedroom home and its bath spaces.
“Bryan wanted the lower floor to have as few steps as possible to the rear yard ocean area,” says Hickox. “We needed the second level to have a driveway and access that was manageable for the carport as well. The result was a twostory home with a split-level entry that meets both needs.”
Outside, the home is a recreation lover’s dream. A mix of monochromatic exterior finishes and naturally textured wood and stone is both intriguing and inviting, elevated with Hue lighting at the front entry by night. A large lanai accommodates covered and open-air entertaining, with tiki torches adding to the ambience.
The verdant lawn leads down to a personal boat dock — one of the many features that earned the project an outdoor living recognition from the Building Industry Association of Hawaii in the 2023 Building Industry Design and Construction Awards. Homeworks also incorporated an outdoor shower and wet bar to round out the amenities.
Inside, interior designer Elyse Grable carried the sophisticated monochromatic palette from the exterior, with walnut cabinetry and accents adding earthy warmth. The home’s open floor plan and high ceilings encourage easy flow between spaces. Stonework selections throughout the home keep things contemporary: contrasting colors on the kitchen counters, textured basalt tile accent walls in the wet bar and powder room, and crisp white tile in the bathrooms and showers.
“Homeworks helped add some nice touches with detailed finishes,” says Spicer.
The home is made for comfort and conversation. It’s perfect for Spicer as he welcomes thoughtful chats about
the local film industry, the latest happenings at his music ventures — Island Sound Studios and The Velvet Monkey speakeasy — and what makes life in the Islands so unique. It takes a solid working relationship between contractor and homeowner to create the right residence, and Spicer advises anyone planning a build or remodel to approach things patiently and prudently. Delays in permitting and higher shipping costs are inevitable in Hawaii, he says, but you can work with your contractor on ways to streamline materials and construction timelines to achieve the results you envision.
“Try to plan as many details as you can,” he says.

C.
S. Wo & Sons celebrates 116 years as a locally owned business and looks toward the future.
STORY BY DARLENE DELA CRUZ PHOTOS BY AARON K. YOSHINO ; COURTESY OF C. S. WO & SONS
Ching sing wo was 22 years old when he opened c. s. wo & brother, a hardware and sporting goods store on North King Street in Honolulu, in 1909. This venture fulfilled his dream of owning a business — and laid the foundation for a legacy that continues today.
In 2025, C. S. Wo & Sons marks its 116th anniversary, carrying on Wo’s entrepreneurial spirit as his original shop evolved into one of Hawaii’s most beloved furniture and home accessories retailers. Executive team members Michael Wo, Kristen Wo and Damian Pherigo shared their collective reflections with Hawaii Home + Remodeling, looking back at the company’s rich history and ahead to its future.
above: A vintage shot of the C. S. Wo & Brother General Store, which opened in 1909.
How did C. S. Wo & Brother become C. S. Wo & Sons?
In the 1940s, Ching Sing’s son Robert “Bob” Wo developed a passion for furniture while attending college in California. On weekends, he worked at Neumann’s Furniture in San Francisco, learning the trade. After returning to Hawaii, he joined the family business with his brothers, Jim and Bill, and together they shifted the focus to furniture — renaming the company C. S. Wo & Sons.
“Furniture is what every home needs,” Bob often said. His belief launched a new mission to provide quality furniture for Hawaii’s families. Today, that mission has evolved into a greater purpose: enhancing customers’ lives through innovation, continuous improvement, and exceptional value and service.
What’s helped the business stay true to its values over time?
Our popo (grandmother), Betty Wo, emphasized integrity, respect, honesty, trust and caring. Our gung gung (grandfather), Bob Wo Sr., championed business excellence, continuous improvement, creative thinking and resourcefulness. These principles guide our decisions and our relationships with customers, coworkers and the community.
above: C. S. Wo & Sons executive team members (from left to right) Michael Wo, Kristen Wo and Daiman Pherigo.
How have the company’s offerings evolved?
From a general store to a single showroom, we’ve grown into a portfolio of six retail brands: C. S. Wo & Sons, HomeWorld, Ashley, Red Knot, apt. by HomeWorld, and SlumberWorld.
C. S. Wo & Sons has always been a cornerstone. Once known for Asian antiques, it has shifted toward a modern island aesthetic and now features lines like Stickley, Natuzzi Italia, and American Leather. Today, we emphasize a personalized experience, offering special-order programs, customization, and complimentary design services.
HomeWorld was launched in the early ’90s to bridge the gap between BJ Furniture (a promotional brand at the time) and C. S. Wo & Sons’ luxury tier. With transitional styles and well-known lines like La-Z-Boy and Flexsteel, HomeWorld remains one of our most trusted brands.
Today’s C. S. Wo & Sons flagship in downtown Honolulu showcases several of the company’s cornerstone brands.
What excites the C. S. Wo & Sons team about the future of furniture and home design?
At its heart, furniture is a fashion industry that constantly evolves as styles and tastes shift. What never changes is the desire for great value — we work with vendors around the world to find pieces that enhance the lives of Hawaii’s families, always aiming for quality at the best price. With our legacy in the local market, we have a unique opportunity — and responsibility — to help shape and define the aesthetics of homes across the state, which are foundational to daily life and the memories created at home every day.
How have economic change, technology, and industry disruption shaped the business?
Innovation has always been part of our identity. In the 1940s, we started local furniture production to overcome a dock strike. In the ’50s and ’60s, we were among the first U.S. retailers to import furniture from Asia. Navigating global trade isn’t new for us — it’s been part of our operations for decades.
Today, we focus on technology to improve efficiency and connect the in-store and online experiences. We launched one of Hawaii’s first fully transactable furniture websites well before most family-owned retailers. With the fourth generation of our family now involved, we’ve embraced digital tools and continue to strengthen our omnichannel offerings.
How are you preparing for future challenges or opportunities?
Throughout our 116-year history, we’ve faced and overcome many challenges. From the Great Depression and wartime to dock strikes, recessions, and COVID-19, we’ve learned to adapt. While the future is uncertain, we stay grounded in the principles that built this company and remain open to change. We feel honored to be part of the lives and homes of Hawaii’s families, and we look forward to continuing to support and grow alongside the local community for generations to come.

For more than 20 years, this show has been the go-to resource for anyone looking to build, renovate or refresh their living space.

FORTY-SIX YEARS AGO, THE DEER HUNTER WON THE OSCAR FOR BEST PICTURE, AND THE DISCO ERA WAS GIVING WAY TO NEW WAVE AND PUNK. In that context, the median home age in Hawaii — 46 years — doesn’t feel so old. It’s an eye-opening statistic, reported in the 2025 Hawaii Housing Factbook by the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO).
The National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) says a home built today, if properly maintained, could last a century or more. Many factors impact a home’s longevity, including climate, wear and tear, and the lifespan of various components like appliances and flooring. Fads, styles and preferences also change over time, as do homeowners’ needs — and that’s when many people start thinking about a remodel.
The idea of remodeling can stir up mixed emotions: excitement over what could be, dread over mounting costs, and fear of the unknown. For anyone considering a remodel, getting expert advice is the best place to start. The Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA Hawaii) BIG Home Building & Remodeling Show brings local experts together for three days to provide the community with invaluable insights and guidance.
The BIA Hawaii BIG Home Building & Remodeling Show will take place August 8-10, 2025, at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. Exhibitors will include contractors for everything from wholehome renovations to single-room upgrades, along with suppliers of cabinetry, appliances, flooring and more. Industry professionals will also lead seminars highlighting practical tips and best practices for every phase of your building process.
Join us at the BIA Hawaii BIG Home Building & Remodeling Show to kick off your remodeling journey.

Collaborative Craftsmanship
Hawaii Deck Builders and Rinell Wood Systems turn a weathered pool deck into an outdoor haven.
BY JADE SNOW
limate-smart design and next-generation materials define the successful renovation of an 800-square-foot deck in Waialae Iki. A collaboration between Chad Hilweh of Hawaii Deck Builders and Jason Crimmins of Rinell Wood Systems, the project showcases the results possible when quality materials meet experienced craftsmanship.
CThe homeowners requested a double-border deck design with modern railings and curved edges to complement the organic shape of their pool. When Hilweh first visited the home, the deck and railing were deteriorating from age and Hawaii’s harsh tropical climate. The substructure required substantial reframing — footings were kept intact while adding new beams, joists and joist tape for protection. Hawaii
Deck Builders also added custom aesthetic details to the deck.
“We added personal touches like the diagonal for the step into the house, the diagonal on the bench, and intricate trim details around areas like the pool filter cap,” says Hilweh.
TimberTech Advanced PVC deck boards in a cool gray “Coastline” hue suited the project well. The material was selected for both style and superior durability — it’s impervious to moisture, won’t rot or splinter, and stays up to 30 degrees cooler than traditional wood. Rinell Wood Systems supplied the TimberTech decking and Feeney’s DesignRail system, a low-maintenance railing to match.
“PVC decking excels in Hawaii’s brutal climate,” says Crimmins, sales manager at Rinell Wood Systems. “It’s made in the U.S. from recycled materials and comes with a 50-year fade
and stain warranty. You’re getting both beauty and performance.”
Crimmins is part of the Rinell Wood Systems family legacy, which has been providing commercial and residential contractors across the state with premium building materials since 1979. Industry pros know the company for expert customer service and a carefully curated inventory of hardware, fasteners and specialty architectural products. Projects like the Waialae Iki deck are built on a “symbiotic relationship,” with Crimmins and builders like Hilweh exchanging ideas and troubleshooting solutions that bring their clients’ visions to life.
“If Chad calls with a question about cable tension or installation, I’ve got the answer,” says Crimmins. “It’s great knowing someone I trust who is really skilled at detail-oriented jobs that I can refer our customers to.”
And detail was key in the Waialae
Iki renovation. From diagonal bench seating designed to maximize scrap material to a continuous drink rail customized for entertaining, the final result is as functional as it is refined.
“We like to ask our customers early on in the building process — how will this space be used?” says Hilweh. “That helps us design smarter. If it’s going to be a high-traffic area, we’ll frame tighter. If it’s for relaxing, we’ll tailor it to that experience. If you love being outside, the sounds of nature, barbecuing or watching your kids play, it’s worth the investment.”
For Crimmins, getting the most out of your outdoor renovation comes down to making informed choices — not just about design, but also about how materials respond to the local environment. Starting with research helps, he says, but insight from veteran suppliers like Rinell Wood Systems can provide key guidance to move forward.
opposite page: The owners of this Waialae Iki home enjoy panoramic views from an outdoor living space remodeled by Hawaii Deck Builders using TimberTech Advance PVC deck boards from Rinell Wood Systems.
above: The Feeney DesignRail system, available at Rinell Wood Systems, was chosen as a low-maintenance railing to complement the deck.
“Once you understand what makes a material last here, you’ll come full circle to the right products — and the right people,” says Crimmins.

Soultanakis was ready for a fresh start in her new downtown apartment. When she first stepped into the condo, she saw potential for a renovation to bring light and life to the aging unit. The remodel took on a deeper significance when she was diagnosed with lung cancer and needed to be extra mindful of selecting materials that supported her recovery. She turned to Natascha Roblee of Pacific American Lumber for help.
“This renovation became about more than just aesthetics,” shares Soultanakis. “It became part of my healing journey. It was important to me that I felt good in my home, physically and emotionally.”
Soultanakis and Roblee worked together to find non-toxic surfaces and flooring. One of Roblee’s recommendations was ipe wood by UA Flooring, an engineered hardwood. Roblee notes that UA Flooring meets stringent Japanese industry
standards for indoor air quality and the lowest levels of formaldehyde emissions. Soultanakis opted for richly grained, mid-toned ipe flooring to replace her previously darker floors with warmth and depth.
“I didn’t know about ipe wood before this, but Tascha helped me find the perfect material and tone for the flooring,” says Soultanakis.
Countertops were also chosen with health and wellness in mind. She selected Pacific American Lumber’s ultra-hygienic Neolith countertop in “Just White,” a sintered stone that’s low on volatile organic compounds and is often used in healthcare settings for its safe and sterile qualities.
“Because I had lung cancer, I wanted materials that didn’t emit any gasses,” says Soultanakis. “I’m like a canary in a coal mine when it comes to smells.”
Materials from Pacific American Lumber complemented design details in Soultanakis’ renovated apartment that reflect her journey and spark joy. She preserved vintage

built-in wooden shelving in the living room and highlighted it as a focal point with décor displays that add bold pops of color and print to the space. The ipe flooring tied everything together, blending old and new with care and intention.
“People told me to paint or remove the shelf, but I loved it,” she says. “It gave the space a cool, midcentury modern look, and it paired perfectly with my beautiful teak bedroom set.”
Neutral finishes for the flooring and surfaces provided a clean, elegant canvas for the apartment’s vibrant color palette. Soultanakis represented her Greek heritage with bold blue doors and accents that reminded her of Piraeus, Greece, her grandmother’s hometown.
“This space became my little villa,” she says. “It overlooks the port, and I can watch cruise ships come and go. It reminds me of her.”
Now in remission and embracing a new chapter of wellness, Soultanakis enjoys both time at home and the vibrant downtown lifestyle, with Iolani Palace, the Hawaii State Library, and Chinatown all within reach.
“Everything’s so close — I can even ride my e-bike to Waikiki and back,” she says, smiling. “It’s really freeing.”

Hawaii Kitchen & Bath co-founder and owner Cris Johnson offers insight on choosing cabinetry materials for style, strength and everyday living.
BY CRIS JOHNSON, AS TOLD TO HAWAII HOME + REMODELING
A : Q:
“Our
high-traffic kitchen is showing its age, and we’re about to begin a well-needed renovation. Which cabinetry materials will balance durability and aesthetic appeal in a busy household with kids and pets?” — Homeowner, Mililani
when clients ask me about cabinetry materials, I always start by explaining our most popular options. Right now, we’re seeing a lot of interest in three categories: natural wood veneers from Belgium, higher-end textured melamines, and UltraMatte solid colors.
Cost, aesthetics and maintenance are key considerations when choosing between these materials. Wood veneers tend to be more expensive, textured melamine is more budget-friendly, and UltraMatte falls somewhere in between.
Aesthetically, our Belgian wood veneers are prefinished with a lowsheen, low-reflectivity, soft-touch surface without a raised texture. They’re created using a process called mixmatch, which has been perfected over decades to create a natural appearance. Some of our high-end textured melamines offer a realistic wood grain look and feel without resembling plastic. UltraMatte is an acrylic material with a soft, low-sheen finish that feels smooth and refined. It also works well alongside other finishes in the space.
When it comes to maintenance, real wood — like our veneers and reconstituted wood products — requires a bit more care. Because wood is a natural material, it will develop a patina over time, especially in areas exposed to direct sunlight. Textured melamine and UltraMatte are the easiest to maintain. Homeowners often prefer textured melamine because the grain and surface texture help hide fingerprints and minor scratches.
Color also plays a big role in upkeep. Darker UltraMatte colors can show fingerprints more easily than textured melamine, but UltraMatte is very easy
to clean — you can wipe away smudges almost instantly. We also offer Fenix, which has a similar look to UltraMatte but is anti-fingerprint, has a suede-like finish, and can thermally repair minor scratches or impacts.
All our materials are heat- and scratchresistant and intended for indoor use. We source high-quality products built to perform in high-traffic kitchens and bathrooms, though some materials are naturally more impact-resistant than others. For example, while wood veneers are durable, they are more vulnerable to impact than textured melamine.
Near sinks and water sources, any material will require regular wiping to avoid moisture damage. We’ve found that neglect — particularly in areas where water drips constantly — is the leading cause of damage. We provide care instructions for all our materials, but in general, gentle soap and water are all you need. With basic weekly care, your cabinetry can last for years. Of course, factors like box construction, edgebanding, glides and hinges also affect longevity.
When we first meet with clients, I take time to learn about their habits,

lifestyle and aesthetic must-haves before establishing a realistic budget. From there, we build a plan. If a client values consistency and wants minimal grain variation, I often recommend standard textured melamine, which offers great quality at an attractive price. If they love organic patterns and natural warmth, I’ll show them our Belgian wood veneers.
Everyone has a unique aesthetic, and our goal is to bring consistency, flow and relevance to the space. Personally, I like to stick to one or two tones or textures for cabinetry. Once you introduce more, it can
start to feel busy. Cabinetry should act as a timeless foundation, while hardware, fixtures and décor add personality. Trends come and go, but a thoughtfully designed kitchen or bath remains beautiful for decades. Because we offer complete customization, we love showing homeowners just how much is possible — often more than they ever imagined.

Carrier Hawaii Vice President Robert Pascua explains why the newest residential air conditioning systems are better for the planet.
BY ROBERT PASCUA, AS TOLD TO HAWAII HOME + REMODELING
Q:
“What’s
the most energy-efficient way to cool my home without driving up my electric bill? How do I select the best option among all the new air conditioners on the market?” — Homeowner, Pearl City
if you have economic or environmental concerns about air conditioning, I recommend exploring advanced technologies and systems developed in the past few years. New options make it easier than ever to stay comfortable at home while using less energy and reducing your carbon footprint. Aside from noisy, inefficient portable air conditioners, residential units come in three basic configurations: ducted
systems, ductless split systems, and window units. Window units are widely available and relatively inexpensive but can be loud and energy-consuming. Many homeowners are turning to quieter ducted and ductless systems for better performance and long-term savings.
Variable-speed compressors adjust output based on how much cooling is needed, rather than cycling on and off at full power. This results in a more consistent temperature and can lead to substantial energy savings. It’s similar to the gas mileage difference between A :
operation, improved air quality, and whole-home comfort. Recent innovations — such as variable-speed compressors, zoning, and eco-friendly refrigerants — have significantly improved the performance of these systems.
Ducted air conditioners — often called central AC — are ideal for new builds or older homes with existing ductwork. These systems cool the entire home through vents, with the compressor located outside. They’re known for quiet

cruising steadily on the freeway versus constantly accelerating and braking — the former is smoother and far more efficient.
Zoning is another innovation that maximizes comfort and efficiency. It involves installing an adjustable thermostat in each room or living space, allowing your system to cool only the areas in use and accommodate different temperature preferences within the household.
Refrigerant technology has also come a long way. Carrier’s new Puron Advance refrigerant, for example, offers up to a 75% reduction in global warming potential compared to previous versions. It’s now standard in Carrier’s Infinity series ducted AC units, which also feature high energy efficiency, built-
in dehumidifiers, and air filters that capture up to 95% of airborne particles.
For homes without existing ductwork, ductless split systems are ideal. These systems consist of an outdoor compressor connected to one or more indoor units. While ductless split systems typically require a higher initial investment than window units, they more than make up for it with lower energy bills and whisper-quiet, reliable performance. And because ductless systems don’t rely on ductwork, there’s no energy loss due to leaks. Installation is usually quick and less invasive, and the systems can be configured for zoning in different rooms.
When coupled with variable-speed compressor technology, ductless
systems set new benchmarks for energy savings. Carrier’s Infinity series ductless models, for example, boast a Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) of 26.0 — nearly triple that of a typical unit from 25 years ago. These models also use the new Puron Advance refrigerant, making them among the most climate-conscious choices available today.
With modern options that offer greater comfort, lower utility costs, and a reduced impact on the environment, you can choose an air conditioning system that’s both smart and sustainable.

Building Hawaii’s Future
Hui Kapili Accelerator graduates 15 local construction professionals in its second cohort.
BY aio HAWAII STAFF
n 2024, aio hawaii, hawaii home + remodeling magazine, and American Savings Bank teamed up to create the Hui Kapili Accelerator with Hawaii’s future in mind. The program’s goal is simple: to address the immediate need for new players in the local building industry by elevating small- to mid-sized construction businesses. Hui Kapili equips its cohort members with tools and resources to help them navigate the complexities of the competitive construction industry and build long-term success.
IThe second cohort wrapped up the free, 10-week program with a graduation ceremony held June 3, 2025, at American Savings Bank’s main Honolulu campus. The group comprised 15 professionals representing 12 businesses from Oahu to Hawaii Island, covering a diverse range of specialties including masonry, electrical work, closet installation, foundation support and more. Many members are tradespeople who left larger companies to start their own.
The Hui Kapili curriculum included sessions with community leaders who taught essential skills in finance, marketing and business development — common areas where entrepreneurs often lack experience and training. The program also emphasized the value of working with and supporting other local businesses in the industry.
“Being part of the accelerator put me in the room with people who understood exactly what I was going through,” said Brandon Jarnesky, a construction advisor at United Construction Group and member of Hui Kapili’s first cohort. “Some were navigating the same struggles, while others had already overcome them and were facing new challenges. That sense of camaraderie and open collaboration shifted my mindset. Instead of seeing others as competitors, I started seeing them as collaborators — people I could reach out to for advice, perspective and support.”

In addition to the weekly curriculum, cohort members participated in a community service project and took part in networking opportunities with other construction professionals and industry leaders.
“We’ve decided to bring most — if not all — of our outsourced work back to local firms,” said Jeremy Imai, system design specialist at Foundation Support of Hawaii and member of Cohort 2. “Hawaii has great local service providers, and you just can’t replace the personal touch and deep market knowledge they offer. The perceived savings of offshore or online solutions don’t outweigh the value of working with people who truly understand our community.”
