A two day Theatre Symposium using workshops, discussions and performance to explore the intersection between theatre, peace building and equality. On Friday evening at 8pm there will be a performance of Uprising, a fusion of text, physical movement and dance that explores memories and experiences of conflict and pathways to peace. Admission is free to the performance, booking through Droichead Arts Centre.
An Ordinary Man Sat 7th Sept, 10am – 5pm Fee: €20 Playwright, theatre director and actor Padraic McIntyre leads this practical writing workshop for theatre and radio. Main areas covered will include; setting, plot and character development. Padraic will also touch on topics like getting your play produced, workshops and casting. Suitable for new and established writers, to help you get your play from your head to the page and from the page to the stage.
Sun 22nd & 23rd Sept, 8pm Tickets: €15 Bring Me Back Alive, is a thought provoking story set in a youth centre in modern day Dublin about Teenage Suicide. The play highlights some of the warning signs to watch out for in a person contemplating suicide. It focuses on the need for more Mental Health Services in order to deal with this escalating crisis which is spiralling out of control. It looks at the devastating effect that suicide has on family and friends. The play is written in as light-hearted way in order to give hope to those who need it the most.

An extraordinary true story. In 1940 a ship set sail from Liverpool for Canada with 90 evacuees on board escaping war torn Britain. The ship was torpedoed and sank. Only 11 evacuees survived including two 15 year olds, Bess and Beth who spent 19 terrifying hours in the water on an upturned lifeboat – this is their survival story.

Scullion
Scullion are one of Ireland’s most enduring and popular bands, whose new album LONG WAVE, their first in over 27 years, was launched to critical acclaim and an extensive nationwide tour last year. This group of musicians, Sonny Condell, Robbie Overson and Philip King remain true to their eclectic musical roots, they are nourished by tradition, translate and deconstruct it, and transmit an individual musical experience whenever they choose to perform. This evening will be special, intimate, warm and uplifting. The music and songs of Sonny Condell are the foundation of the unique Scullion sound. His artistry is the creative beating heart of the trio, a trio that makes a mighty sound. This special concert will celebrate that sound.
Carmel McCreagh Fri 20th Sept, 8.30pm Tickets: €12/€10 conc Carmel McCreagh has been entertaining audiences for 15 years with her soulful interpretations of songs from the Great American Songbook as well as contemporary and original songs. She has released two albums — Nice Girl and Skylark — both of which have been critically acclaimed. Carmel’s pianist and musical director, Fiachra Trench, grew up in Drogheda. His parents, Bea Orpen and Terry Trench, were co-founders of the Municipal Art Collection, now housed in the Highlanes Gallery. Fiachra’s scores for film and television include A Love Divided, Dear Sarah and he has provided orchestral arrangements for many rock, pop and folk performers.
This is How we Fly is a Contemporary Folk band consisting of Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh on fiddle, Seán Mac Erlaine on bass clarinet, saxophones & live electronics, Nic Gareiss on percussive dance, and Petter Berndalen on drums and percussion. Their music sees Swedish folk music rhythms meet the texture of traditional Irish fiddle, percussive dance from America & improvised jazz and electronics.

A very popular night in the Drogheda annual social calendar and one of the last variety shows to run in the town, running for 13 years now, and featuring many wonderful local acts. Showcasing the cream of local talent, this variety show is full of laughs, music, song and dance and all proceeds going to a great cause, St Mary’s Friends of the Elderly. Come support a local charity and have a great night out at the same time!
Carmel Boyle from Monasterboice is a singer/songwriter whose inspirational songs are evocative and whose voice has a pure angelic quality. In this charity concert Carmel will sing songs by the Greek singer Nana Mouskouri whose unique voice and distinctive style made an impression on her as a young aspiring singer. This promises to be an enjoyable and relaxing evening with much loved songs and a little nostalgia. Proceeds from the performance will go towards An Croí.

The Lourdes Brass Band has been a fixture in the town of Drogheda for 54 years with its establishment in 1959, by the late Mr. Jack Reilly and Fr. Kevin Connolly. They scooped 2nd place at 34th annual South of Ireland Brass Championships. We welcome them back to Droichead Arts Centre to perform their annual Christmas Concert.

Enter Robot a talking machine that will keep the old-timer in line. Or so Frank¹s kids think. After a few days of Robot¹s lectures on diet and exercise, Frank gets his own idea to enlist Robot in a new robbery scheme. There’s bracing humour here, and a dash of heartbreak too.

When Gaston falls in love with Gigi and asks her to be his wife, the courtesans are appalled. Weaving in and out of the story is Maurice Chevalier as an aging boulevardier who, years earlier, had been in love with one of the courtesans. Chevalier gets most of the best Lerner & Loewe tunes, including Thank Heaven for Little Girls, I’m Glad I’m Not Young Any More, and I Remember it Well. Filmed on location in Paris, Gigi won several Oscars.
Set in the years running up to the First World War, Summer in February focuses on the wild and bohemian Lamorna Group of the Newlyn artist’s colony, dominated by the charismatic Alfred Munnings. The anti-Modernist Munnings, now one of Britain’s most sought-after artists, is at the heart of a complex love triangle, involving aspiring young painter and the land agent in charge of the Lamorna estate. Summer in February, reveals the tragic consequences of this ill-fated love affair and casts light on the Newlyn colony which fuelled Cornwall’s international reputation for art.

A tale of rivalry and despair at thirty, the story finds George Bailey (James Stuart) in turmoil, having been framed by his arch rival, torn between his own desires and aspirations, but struggling to always do the right thing. This inner conflict proves too much for Bailey, who sees suicide as the only option. In classic Hollywood style, Heaven sends a guardian angel to remind him how worthwhile his life has been and to treasure the good times when the going gets tough.

Since graduating from NCAD Cliona Fox has exhibited widely throughout Ireland and abroad. In this exhibition (a title meaning the stuff made up of waste for shark fishing), Cliona explores how the downturn in the economy has affected small coastal communities. Some wonderful passages of loose brushwork and expressive mark-making combined with a varied palette and elements of carefully constructed details make these works worth serious contemplation.
Culture Night Fri 20th Sept, 6.30pm - 8.30pm Venue: Printpoint Studio, Barlow House To celebrate Culture Night 2013, Printpoint, Droichead Arts Centre’s resident print studio at Barlow House, will open its doors to the public and invite you to view a mini exhibition of A5 prints by the member artists. Sun 3rd Nov – Sat 21st Dec Gallery Opening Times: Tues – Sat 10am – 5pm This exhibition brings together two exceptional artists who work with different materials; bronze and paper. Sculptor Petr Holecek was born in the Czech Republic and has exhibited extensively in Ireland and the Czech Republic. His piece entitled ‘Qwak’ is permanently on display in the National Botanic Garden in Prague. He was awarded in 2006 with the Gold Medal at Art Biennale, Benesov, Czech Republic and in 2010 with the Mill Cove Award at the 25th Sculpture in Context Exhibition. Marie-Louise uses drypoint, etching, and embossing in her prints. She is particularly interested in the concept of time and its impact on our lives and the places around us in her work for this exhibition.

A must-see event where fans will have the chance to witness the passion of dedicated athletes perfecting their craft. Wrestling Superstars will collide in an epic encounter inside the ring that’ll grip the audience’s attention like nothing you have seen before. Spectators will get the chance to get up close and personal with their favourite stars. This bone-crunching event is catered towards kids both young and old! The non-violent evening is the perfect family experience, as the good guys take on the baddies.

This explosive event is a show-case of our work for the year. It includes excerpts from Smash! and Anni with a Hip-Hop scene in between. Lyndance Company is a Musical Stage School for girls and boys aged between 3 and 18 based in South Gate Shopping Centre. The Director and Choreographer is Linda Judge. Lyndance Company was established in 1983 and is committed to developing each dancers self-confidence and body awareness.

There will be live music and lots of fun to be had on the night. All funds raised will be invested in our Dance School to give our students the opportunity to attend weekend competitions in 2014.

Droichead Arts Centre is an arts centre to be proud of. In 2009, Droichead undertook major renovations, introducing new seating, a café/bar and improving the reception and foyer.
In 1999, Droichead Arts Centre made history purchasing Barlow House, a fine Georgian Building situated on Narrow West Street, as a second premises for the arts centre. The building functions as offices and room rental space for workshops, classes and meetings. Built in 1734 by Alderman James Barlow, it is regarded as the finest Palladian style Georgian Townhouse to survive in Drogheda.
