NOTES

19

You’ll be doing an interview for the job that you wrote your cover letter for. Your Mentor is going to ask you some of the questions below. Have a read through the questions and think about an answer you could give for them.

POTENTIAL INTERVIEW QUESTIONS QUESTION

WHAT A GOOD ANSWER LOOKS LIKE?

Why do you want to work for INSERT COMPANY NAME?

This is a chance for you to show the employer that you’ve done your research on the company and that you’re really interested in the role. You should focus on the positives that you see in the role and the company . Don’t only discuss what’s in it for you. For example don’t say, ‘I want to work at this company because it will give me all the skills I want in my career’ Instead you could say. I want to work here because I’m passionate about the work that your organisation is doing and I believe in the values that your company represents. I believe I can bring a lot to the table as well as develop my talents further for the benefit of the company.

What experience do you have that is relevant to this job?

Make sure you’ve read through the job description and you have an example that matches up with each quality they are looking for. Give them 3-5 examples

Do you bring any specific skills to the job that will be useful?

Think about skills that you have developed that could be useful in the job. E.G I’m excellent at time management which allows me to complete multiple tasks at the same time.

Describe a time that you faced a challenge either in your work or personal life and how you overcame that challenge.

The employer wants to know that you can solve problems. You should give a brief description of the challenge and let them know what steps you took to overcome the challenge, and then what the outcome was. If you can keep it to a professional answer it’s always best, but if it’s your first job, use an appropriate personal answer.

QUESTION

WHAT A GOOD ANSWER LOOK LIKE

What is your greatest strength?

When you are asked questions about your strengths, it's important to discuss things that will qualify you for the job. The best way to respond is to describe the skills and experience that directly with the job you are applying for.

What is your greatest weakness?

When you're asked what your greatest weakness is there are several different ways you can answer, including mentioning skills that aren't critical for the job, skills you have improved on, and turning a negative into a positive. For example, Being organized wasn't my strongest point, but I implemented a time management system that really helped my organization skills

Why should we hire you over the other candidates? What makes you the right person for the role?

The best way to respond is to give concrete examples of why your skills and accomplishments make you the best candidate for the job. Take a few moments to compare the job description with your abilities, as well as mentioning what you have accomplished in your other positions. Be positive and reiterate your interest in the company and the position. This is a good one to prepare ahead of the interview?

Tell us about yourself, what do you like to do outside of work/study hours?

This question is probably trying to identify whether you’ll fit into the culture of the company and to get a bit of a feel about who you are as a person. Don’t give a super long answer, but let them know some of your hobbies or interests, and through that weave in some of your values. E.g I’m a big family person, so on the weekends I love spending time with my brothers and sisters.

Where do you want to be career in 5 years?

In this question, the employer is probably looking to see if you’ll have a long term commitment to the role. It’s important to be honest here. If you’re thinking of the job as a career path, then let them know that. If it’s only a temporary thing to you, you should also inform them so they aren’t caught off guard later. They also want to know that you have thought ahead to the future and can plan and work towards targets. So even if it is a temporary measure, let them know what your goal is.
