01 MALBOLGE

MALBOLGE

In 1998, Ben Olmstead devised a programming language known as Malbolge, named for Dante’s eighth circle of hell. A computational language so irrational, it disconnects us from logic. From this comes our torment in the realm of generative practice. An intrusion of techniques and disciplines outside usual architectural practice. Using Blender physics and chance-based techniques this studio focuses on composition rather than program typology. The endgame however, is a micro campus of very architectural ideas.

Cut plan not to scale

A dolmen task introduces us to Blender physics and rendering. We add physics to elements and drop them in attempt to create a random shelter in the style of a dolmen.

The precinct task introduces us to Blender force fields and particles. We add physics to elements use force fields such as vortexes to and collide the elements into a composition.

Floor plan not to scale

The composition becomes the ground floor footprint to experiment with. This studio is in progress.

:Undertake Complex Architectural Project Adv.Dip Building Design, Semester 1 2022 program : Renovation, Extension of Counselling service Part of university precinct location : Wurundjeri Country, Carlton, Australia supervisor : Mark Humphrey individual work video

: tinyurl.com/bddmj4b6

This project is part of a precinct and examines regenerative design and repairing communities through design. Our environmental situation demands we look beyond living ‘sustainably’ in favour of ‘regenerative design’ :looking at how we can reverse our destruction, as well respond to social and economic factors. A new design for the RMIT Counselling Service contributes to the urban and social fabric of the community while evoking connections that stretch beyond the colonial heritage of Carlton. These aspirations, both functionally and conceptually highlight the client’s community and cultural leadership.

Cultural memory. Personal memory. Marking the journey. Safety. Trust. Sharing.

The facilities connect the old and new buildings, creating a suite of counselling services, flexible program spaces, social facilities and emergency accommodation in a shared complex — completely transforming the University’s offering. New spaces for socialisation and interaction, honour the sharing of historical and new cultural narratives. The site’s past history has been retained and reused, and pre-colonial native vegetation has been reinstated. New materials and construction methods maintain circular economy principles, including: mass timber construction and design for disassembly, reuse and adaptability.

:Design Studio Adv.Dip Building Design, Semester 1 2022 program : Sustainable residential home on greenfield site : Wurundjeri Country , Australia location supervisor : Mark Humphrey individual work

The clients wish to build a sustainable home for their adult child + family in line with the ethos of their existing home also on the property. The brief also asks to incorporate ideas from precedents examined in a previous assessment task, and themes from a Twitter feed.

03 ARK HOUSE

ARK HOUSE

Thorough climate analysis and precedent studies were conducted. Of particular interest is the Zig Zag House by Drew Heath in Wollombii NSW; due to its site context (forested land), off-grid passive design, and a deck to connect to nature

19

The precedents addressed water shortages, extreme heat and cold, a semi-buried existence, self-sufficiency and rewilding.

SUMMER SOLSTICE 76° EQUINOX 53° WINTER SUN ON THERMAL MASS

With this post-apocalyptic theme, my design philosophy became:

WINTER SOLSTICE 29°

... we are powerless against nature. D1

Diagrams and renders explain Passive Design

With a greenfield sloped site: We aim for as little disturbance by the building footprint and site access as possible. With a dam nearby, attention is paid to prevent erosion and sedimentation during construction and operation. Nature as it was. Nature as it could be: The landscape is designed to be regenerative, with the goal of letting nature flourish with as little human intervention as possible. Indigenous planting grown from seeds established in the area will provide habitat, shelter and food for local wildlife.

MAHJONG CHAIR who what where when why

: Melbourne Design Week 2022 + Never Too Small : Exhibition of chairs for small footprint living : Wurundjeri Country, Melbourne, Australia : 17-27 March, 2022 : More people in the world choose to live in small apartments like Colin’s 40sqm home. Why isn’t there more choice when it comes to furniture suited to small footprint living?

WATCH THE VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPdEr9NBXVE

Mahjong is a tile based game developed in China. My final design was inspired by the form of the tiles and how the are stacked on folded in play. The design of two chairs stack to form shelves when not in use, and fold-over to serve as a table. Made from reclained plywood (former ceilingof the local radio station), the furniture was made with hand tools with an aim to democratise the design. Designed in Rhino with PDF downloadable cut sheet
