SCHOOL PROFILE | 2021 - 2022

Aiglon at a glance

Aiglon was founded in 1949 by British visionary, John Corlette, and is located at 1170 metres in the Frenchspeaking village of Chesières in the Swiss Alps. GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The aim of the school is the balanced development of mind, body and spirit through challenge, respect, responsibility, diversity and service. Aiglon students build close relationships with teaching staff through a tutorial system offering individualised counselling throughout their entire high school experience.

PATHWAY TO THE AIGLON DIPLOMA

To graduate from Aiglon all students are expected to develop as well-rounded young people and must achieve beyond just their academic programme. Each of the below components are required to graduate with the Aiglon Diploma. − MIND: ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES The school day runs from 08h00 until 16h00 on weekdays. For the final two years, students are entered either as candidates in the IB Diploma Programme or follow a series of IB courses to achieve the Aiglon Diploma. Younger students either follow a specialised Pre-IB Programme, IGCSEs or Aiglon's bespoke Discovery Programme. − BODY: EXPEDITION, PE, SPORT Weekends are highly structured. Students are required to complete nine expeditions each year and may be away from campus for a day or most of the weekend. Moreover, during winter the school day is adjusted for required ski lessons. The outdoor programme involves: camping, orienteering, multiday trekking, or in the winter: alpine skiing, ski touring, cross-country skiing and ice climbing. All year groups also participate in PE through a range of sports activities throughout the year. − SPIRIT: MEDITATION, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP Students are expected to adhere to the Guiding Principles and demonstrate a positive approach to their studies and school life. All students participate in Aiglon's meditation assemblies and can be part of local or international service opportunities. Most leadership positions are reserved for Year 13 students. They can serve as school prefects, leaders in house or different student organisations. Guardian is the highest leadership position; two are selected each year from amongst the prefects. − ACTIVITY PROGRAMME Following classes, students are involved with activities until 17h30 when they have house commitments until 19h00. Activities are scheduled in specific blocks meaning normally only specific activities can be joined each term. The programme is integrated into school life with music, drama, creative, sport and service offerings organised both by teachers and students. Developing a wellrounded activity portfolio is central both to the IB requirements and Aiglon Diploma. 3

SCHOOL PROFILE | 2021 - 2022

Senior programmes and results

Aiglon senior students follow a rigorous and highlypersonalised curriculum that requires them to explore their world and enable them to pursue their interests. YEARS 10 & 11 - PRE-IB, IGCSE, O-LEVELS Aiglon offers the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), British GCSE, O Levels and pre-IB as comprehensive two-year programmes. All offer a balanced mix of practical experience, theoretical knowledge and develop a range of core skills including knowledge recall, teamwork and problem-solving.

YEARS 12 & 13 - INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

IB students choose six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Almost all subjects are available at both levels. In addition to the six subjects students must complete an Extended Essay (EE), Theory of Knowledge curriculum (ToK) and a Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) portfolio in order to achieve the IB and the Aiglon Diploma.

ACADEMIC POLICIES - COURSE SELECTION School policy requires that any Year 12 student enrolling in Higher Level Maths courses start on 4 HL courses; the expectation is that students will revert to 3HL courses, as the IB is designed. - PREDICTIONS IB predictions for Year 13 students are available for universities in October and December. Predictions are determined by a student's teacher and are based on a student's performance on mock exams and internal assessments. - GRADE POINT AVERAGES (GPA) The unweighted grade point average for the current year is updated at the end of each term. Aiglon’s academic assessment periods happen in December and June for Years 10-12, and December and March for Year 13. Along with grades, each teacher internally assesses a student for Effort: Exceeding (E), Meeting (M), or Below (B). - ACADEMIC DISTINCTIONS Distinction Roll: Average GPA of 6.5 or above with no B grades. Honour Roll: Average GPA of 6.0 or above with no B grades. Merit Roll: 3 or more E grades (recognising effort not attainment).

5

Offered subjects and results Aiglon offered 57 IB subjects in 2021 across the six groups. Each subject is listed with the cohort average and distribution of individual scores across the course.
