SCHOOL PROFILE | 2020 - 2021

Aiglon at a glance

Aiglon was founded in 1949 by British visionary, John Corlette, and is located at 1170 metres in the Frenchspeaking village of Chesières in the Swiss Alps. GUIDING PRINCIPLES

The aim of the school is the balanced development of mind, body and spirit through challenge, respect, responsibility, diversity and service. Aiglon students build close relationships with teaching staff through a tutorial system offering individualised counselling throughout their entire high school experience.

PATHWAY TO THE AIGLON DIPLOMA

To graduate from Aiglon all students are expected to develop as well-rounded young people and must achieve beyond just their academic programme. Each of the below components are required to graduate with the Aiglon Diploma. − MIND: ACADEMIC PROGRAMME Students are either entered as candidates in the IB Diploma Programme, or they pursue a series of IB-level courses to achieve the Aiglon Diploma. All students complete the Extended Essay and CAS portfolio (see pages 4-5). − BODY: EXPEDITION, PE, SPORT All students are required to participate in multiple expeditions per term (normally two or three). This outdoor education programme involves: camping, orienteering, multi-day trekking, or in the winter: alpine skiing, ski touring, cross-country skiing and ice climbing. All years also participate in PE through a range of sport activities throughout the year. − SPIRIT: MEDITATION, SERVICE, LEADERSHIP Students are expected to adhere to the Guiding Principles and demonstrate a positive approach to their studies and school life. All students participate in Aiglon's meditation assemblies, have multiple opportunities for local or international service as well as pursue leadership roles in school and house. − ACTIVITY PROGRAMME Aiglon's activity programme is integrated into school life with music, drama, creative, sport and service offerings organised by teachers and students. Developing a well-rounded Aiglon activity portfolio is central both to the IB CAS requirements and full participation in the Aiglon programme.

SCHOOL PROFILE | 2020 - 2021

Senior programmes and results

Aiglon senior students follow a rigorous and highly personalised curriculum that requires them to explore their world and enable them to pursue their interests.

YEARS 10 & 11 - IGCSE, O-LEVELS, PRE-IB

Aiglon offers the IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education), British GCSE, O Levels and pre-IB as comprehensive two-year programmes. All offer a balanced mix of practical experience, theoretical knowledge and develop a range of core skills including knowledge recall, teamwork and problem-solving.

YEARS 12 & 13 - INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE

The two-year International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme was introduced at Aiglon in 2010. The IB is an academically demanding, well-rounded programme that is suited to the Aiglon study style which encourages independent learning, enquiry and self-sufficiency. IB students choose six subjects, three at Higher Level (HL) and three at Standard Level (SL). Almost all subjects are available at both levels. In addition to the six subjects students must complete an Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge course and a Creativity, Activity and Service (CAS) programme to gain the Diploma. - GRADE POINT AVERAGES The unweighted cumulative grade point average is updated at the end of each term. Aiglon’s academic assessment periods happen in December and June for Years 10-12, and December and March for Year 13. Any disciplinary actions on matters of serious behavioural concern are typically reported to universities if the probationary period is still active at the time of application. - ACADEMIC DISTINCTIONS Our academic distinctions include: Distinction Roll: Average mark reading of 6.5 or above with no 'Below' grades. Honour Roll: Average of 6.0 or above with no 'Below' grades. Merit Roll: 3 or more (E) Exceeding Expectations grades and recognises effort rather than just attainment.

5

Offered subjects and results Aiglon offers 57 IB subjects across the six groups. Each subject is listed with the 2020 cohort average and the distribution of individual scores across the course.
