We started 2019 with ‘ sustainability ‘ in our heart, by sending more youths to conduct various community projects across different parts of the world. We also reviewed the financial models of our national projects to build more sustainable projects. Our international volunteers are big part of how we collectively contribute towards SDGs via different initiatives.

Year 2020 is the year we continue to impact youths through every local community that we are involved in. We innovated our projects with all university chapters, to engage and act according to community’s needs.

Global Volunteer - Youth Impact

231 youths from Malaysia joined Global Volunteer Program across the world 212 youths joined as virtual volunteers during pandemic to volunteer in Malaysia

International Relation Management We have been working closely with AIESEC in Vietnam, Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Mainland of China, India, Myanmar, Thailand, Bangladesh and various entities in Europe and Africa to facilitate our youth leadership experiences. Malaysian youths are taken care and guided by AIESECers in those entities while spending their 6 weeks to conduct a community project abroad. Projects are also designed for youths to develop skills like project management, team management, communications skills etc.

University Relations Our local university chapters engage with university relations to promote Global Volunteer opportunities to university students. For example, we work with International Office of UPM to provide sponsorship for students to volunteer abroad. We also obtain endorsements and supports from university to conduct various leadership trainings and seminars with university students.

SDG Projects Our national and local projects are designed to contribute to SDG indicators. Our national project such as Speak Up and Clean Our PLate work on solving SDG 4 Quality Education and SDG 12 Responsible Consumption. We work with huge network of NGOs and high schools to conduct our projects. International youths bring in exposure and different cross cultural experiences to all these youths that are impacted by the projects.

Speak Up! is a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, Quality Education aligned project that envisions to build conďŹ dence among every single Malaysian youth to speak to the world.

In Summer 2020, Speak Up project aims to reach out to 388 secondary school students in Malaysia.

To support less privileged students on online learning, we provided laptops and desktops to 26 Malaysian students from B40 background.

Virtual Workshops Speak Up virtual workshops are a series of 6 sessions that help students to explore and develop their own character and learn interesting, useful STEM skills.

The virtual workshops are held by youth volunteers that we work with on virtual meeting platform. With the learnings they obtain in the workshops, the students will participate in a Speak Up video challenge to express themselves and create their own STEM project like a mobile application.

Speak Up Podcast

Speak Up Podcast is a project innovation in Summer 2020 where we enable conversations among youth in Malaysia and beyond on the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 - Quality Education.

In this 33-episode podcast series, we empower youth volunteers who are involved in our project to exchange their thoughts and ideas on education matters. We also invite some learning partners and guests with various experiences and expertise to join in our podcast.

Global Volunteer - Speak Up

To achieve SDG Target 4.4 , we aim to empower Malaysian students in gaining technical skills related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) which are useful for their future employment and entrepreneurship.

Speak Up - Partners

Train the Trainer (TtT) is a training session conducted by our learning partners and/or organizing committee for the volunteers in the project. The session aims to introduce the volunteers to the project focus and provide them professional knowledge that are required for them to conduct the virtual workshops.

Personally, I have had a really pleasant experience working with AIESEC. Teach For Malaysia's relationship with AIESEC goes back many years, and even some of our staff members and Fellows were AIESECers in their university days long before we began this partnership formally. AIESEC members whom I have met had always been professional and thoughtful, and were always prepared as well (case in point: In all meetings I have had with AIESEC, I truly appreciate AIESECers being really clear about objectives of the discussion).

I also personally enjoy working with youths who are enthusiastic and always full of hope for the future. TFM champions education equity and we recognise that this cannot be achieved by working alone.

Hence why in TFM's model, we've worked with many different partners over the years. I am glad that AIESEC shares some common goals with TFM, and I truly believe that organisations with similar goals should always ďŹ nd opportunities to collaborate and leverage on each other. Different individuals and organisations are like pieces in a jigsaw puzzle - we need different pieces to make the picture whole and beautiful.

We are glad that AIESEC runs programmes like Speak Up that creates short-term, immediate impact during the run of the programme while giving its volunteers an eye-opening experience. We hope that participants involved with AIESEC's programmes would continue looking for different ways to make a difference and make it their lifelong journey to contribute towards education.

Clean Our Project started in January 2016 aligning with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production that is initiated by the United Nation.

The purpose is to tackle the food waste issue, especially at household level which is responsible for the largest portion of all food waste in Malaysia. Up to 50% of the Municipal solid waste (MSW) in Malaysia consists of food waste including fruits and vegetables.

Virtual Workshops Clean Our Plate projects are collaborated by 9 universities across Malaysia. Numerous workshops / podcasts / forums were organised surrounding the theme of ‘Food Waste Issues and Awareness’. In the workshops/podcasts/forums, participants are introduced to food waste issues, how can youth combat food waste issues, causes and effects of food waste issues and the list goes on.

At the same time, we also run a campaign called ‘#JomCOP’ in our Facebook/Instagram page with themes like food waste facts, initiatives to reduce food waste, meal planning and food donation to needies in the form of poster, video, quizzes in story, Instagram filter and more .

From April to Oct, 12519 reach has been achieved and the highest reach contributed by the announcement of Food Donation Drive Live Session with Green Hero and The Lost Food Project on 13 Aug .

Meanwhile, household composting remains as one of the most signiďŹ cant activities by clean Our Plate project. This initiative is implemented to cultivate responsible consumption habit in our volunteers daily life by incorporating an easy and obvious action of food waste composting. volunteers are given a comprehensive training program to support them in their composting execution.

Global Volunteer - Clean Our Plate

Household Meal Planning (HMP) was a national initiative begun as an observation to view the trend of food waste and budget planning in households particularly focusing on the household sizes. In this initiative, our volunteers begun by observing their household trend in terms of food waste items and expenditure followed by brainstorming the most suitable solutions that they can apply in their homes. Solutions such as meal prepping, grocery systems at home, proper storage methods to ensure products last longer, budgeting based on what they need or even replanting vegetables at home. This could potentially help reduce food waste as well as reduce the budget spent on groceries as they are often thrown away.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, many underprivileged communities are affected hence experiencing daily food shortage and food security issues. Hence, we ran a National food donation drive to combat the above issue. To achieve the end goal, we aimed to save as much surplus food as possible around us and channelling them to B40 families present around us with the help of our National distribution partners: The Lost Food Project, Green Hero and Kechara in Penang.

With the help of 22 AIESEC volunteers from AIESEC in Penang, AIESEC in UPM and AIESEC in JB, we have set up 22 collection points across Malaysia (Selangor, Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca, Kedah, Negeri Sembilan, Johor, Sarawak) and Indonesia from 3 August 2020 - 5 September 2020. Throughout 1 month of collections we have managed to save 968.73kg of surplus food and have beneďŹ ted 319 number of individuals from the underprivileged communities Thanks to the support from our partners, The Lost Food Project in Kuala Lumpur, Green Hero and Kechara in Penang, as well as our Volunteers located in different states in Malaysia and Indonesia, we have managed to supply daily food necessities to B40 families, orphanages, old folks homes and refugee communities.

Apart from Speak Up and Clean Our Plate, AIESEC in Malaysia also runs various projects aligning to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These are some of the projects we ran by targeting the community needs identified by respective local committee across the country.

Greeny Green ( AIESEC in Johor Bahru ) Greeny Green is a project working towards SDG 13 - Climate Action since 2017 and had impacted more than 500 students in Johor about recycle and climate change issues. We provided environmental knowledge to local secondary students to be applied in daily life to initiate influential learning with their peers.

NYLC ( AIESEC in Kedah-Perlis ) NYLC is a project that is conducted by AIESECers and international volunteers to develop high school students with leadership conference, workshops and seminars. The project focuses on raising self-awareness of students in world issues, leadership and management.

Light A Refugee’s Dream ( AIESEC in Taylors ) Light A Refugee’s Dream focuses on providing quality education on subjects such as English and Mathematics to the refugees in the centre. The duration for the entire project takes 4 weeks.

International Relation Management We work with different AIESEC chapters in Asia Pacific and Europe to facilitate youths’ experience to grow their career in a cross-cultural environment. We conducted various trainings and sessions to educate each other on industry needs and country cultures.

Global Talent Partners We partner with local corporate partners who need internationals and diverse talents to transform their workplace. We provide youth talents across the world via our platform, with targeted youth profiles based on job scopes, company values and culture.

University Relation We work closely with career centres of universities to provide job opportunities for youths abroad. We had joined career fairs and conducted interview trainings for youths to prepare themselves better.

Every year, we have two recruitments nationally across our local chapters in February and September. As the membership is only limited to 500-600 opportunities per year, we only recruit youths that fit to the right values and profiles. Our members also run through elections every year to go for higher position based on our elections and legislation process.

MYLDS and National Leaders Conference ( WNC ) AIESEC in Malaysia conducts national leadership conferences for our membership every year. The followings are the general objectives : 1. Onboard executive boards of all university chapters with leadership trainings and workshops by AIESEC alumni and external partners 2. YouthSpeak Forum & World Largest Lesson YSF is our agship program that engages youths to take actions toward Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). In year 2020, we conducted various virtual YSF across all universities and also a national YSF. In these touchpoints, we mainly focus on SDG 3 Good Health and Well Being, SDG 4 Quality Education, SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth, SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities and SDG 17 Partnership for the Goals. Throughout the YSF engagement across Malaysia, we manage to engage more than 100, 000 youth outreaches digitally. 1,297 youths join in YSF actively to take actions and sharing their ideas with the public. Generally, youths think YSF is a great touchpoint to engage corporate industry that able to provide them the external relevance and allow them to understand the skills that the corporate is looking for in youths.

Lead Today is a live engagement series that provides a platform to youths and partners to have live conversations on various leadership topics. I stayed in AIESEC for 3 years because of 2 things, which are Personal Development and the belief in the organization's vision. I wanted to constantly challenge myself to go beyond my limits while contributing to a meaningful cause.

My role in AIESEC is to oversee the operation in the community group and review the performance. At the same time, I am a student in Universiti Malaya, majoring in AIESEC and minoring in Business Administration.

While helping young people, I manage to learn about time management. Besides, my analytic skill improves. I practise the skills by having weekly data review and proposing the ways forwards to engage with youth better. I also learn to utilise tools such as Google sheet to perform data analysis. "

I also learned to provide practical experience for youth to develop themselves while creating an impact to their surroundings.

I gain a lot of new insights about food waste issue and the ways to overcome it. I get to know that food waste issue is an insidious problem that causes climate change and food shortage problem. It encourages me to start taking actions by applying the knowledge I gain from the project itself and starting to inuence the people around me. I really learn a lot throughout the project and it widens my perspective!

Membership - Our Stories

Personally, AIESEC plays a big part to not only hone soft and hard skills for young people, but to teach them to be more self aware and empathetic . As we progress further as a nation, I believe we need young people who are not only skilled, but are also self aware about their beliefs and actions and can be empathetic towards others who may have differing opinions towards us. Only by doing so, we can truly strive for a better Malaysia.

My experience working with AIESEC has been an inspiring one to see a group of young people running interesting initiatives to benefit their local communities.

I rate 7/10 from the experience.

I liked that the committee and local chapters are always ready to learn, share and not afraid to ask. It's something I truly appreciate, especially running a workshop/training with them I think it's a great initiative. Despite the challenges along the way due to pandemic, the Project teams embraced the spirit of "the show must go on".

How I see our partnership contributing to the SDG4.0 is rather more of an eye-opener for the university students themselves, in understanding the true reality on the ground, on top of the impact created for the target beneficiaries. Such partnership allows great room for grooming of the future leaders, so that they can be empathetic towards the school system, the teachers, the students and the circumstances that come their way.

Clean Our Plate project is one of the way to involve the students to get their hands on activity like composting.

Wish all the volunteers able to create more impacts and involve more people in this movement together.

This collaboration gave me an opportunity to be a teacher for the first time and it made me realised that as a videographer, I can actually make a change and extend the message that I wish to deliver.

AIESEC is governed strongly with compendium and legislation processes. Every budget and ďŹ nance decision in national level requires voting from the local chapters and national chapter via proper legislation order.

The main income of AIESEC in Malaysia as a not-for-profit organisation consists of National Affiliation Fee ( 40.3% ), Exchange Income ( 36.5%), followed by partnerships and sponsorships that include conferences, national partnerships and project partnerships ( 19.9% ) in total. Year 2020 has been a tough transformation for AIESEC as we face a drastic drop in exchange income and national affiliation fee from local chapters. While we pivot around having more diverse initiatives to continue to develop youths without exchange programs, we started working more closely with our partners to develop youths with new programs.

The main expenses of the organisation revolve around fixed costs such as HR costs for the national team, office expenses, legal and professional fees, administration costs and sales and marketing costs. The organisation invests in conferences, trainings, workshops and summits for youth development and local chapters development every year for our memberships, who are the volunteers in local chapters.

We believe in the power of youth, since 1968.

The world has transformed so much today. The organisation started with a simple belief : when more youths could experience cross cultural exchanges, they will understand the world and apparently, they will take one more action to make this world a better place.

In year 2020, when pandemic has stopped AIESEC from continuing to make these exchanges happen, we work with technology and resources that we have to continue our effort. We managed to sustain our national projects, and we made them happened via virtual volunteering programs.

The most sincere appreciation goes to our memberships across the whole entity in every part of Malaysia. Without our volunteers in the local chapters, we will not be able to adapt within a short period of time. We also want to thank all our partners, national team, and alumni who have worked hand in hand with us to make these happen. Just like what the organisation strives for, this is the power of youth.
