Guangzhou is the capital and the sub-provincial city of

Guangdong Province in the southern part of the People's Republic of China. The city is also known by an older English-language name, Canton. It is a port on the Pearl River, navigable to the South China Sea, and is located about 120km north-west of Hong Kong.

As of the 2000 census, the city has a population of 6 million, and a metropolitan population of 12.6 million[citation needed] making it the most populous city in the province and the third most populous metropolitan area in China.

The art of calligraphy is widely practiced and revered in the East Asian civilizations that use Chinese characters.

In addition to being an artform in its own right, calligraphy has also influenced ink and wash painting, which is accomplished using similar tools and techniques.

The East Asian tradition of calligraphy originated and developed from China, specifically the ink and brush writing of Chinese characters.

Embroidery is one of the excellent and traditional Chinese crafts. It is done with colored silk thread in different stitches. Canton embroidery is the technology that is mainly developed in Canton cities like Guangzhou, Foshan, Nanhai, Shunde and so on.

At Ming Dynasty , Canton embroidery became one of the most exported products in China due to the development of Maritime silk road. Canton embroidery can be seen everywhere as Chi-pao is the great example. Also you can see it on Canton Opera costumes.

Project Activity Introduction

Ceramics, short for ceramic art, also known as pottery, is not only a material product but also a spiritual product, not only an ancient art but also a modern art.

It originates from the Neolithic Age (8000 years ago), when the ancient Chinese already learnt how to make and use pottery, they mixed the clay and water and then made them into a certain shape. After drying, used fire to burn them till it became hard.In Shang Dynasty, because of the improvement of kiln, the use of new clay and the invention of glaze,people created porcelain with higher quality,which is more delicate,harder,smoother and more useful.

There are a lot of traditional,peaceful,classical acient villages in China.Some of them are still in good condition.However,some of them are being destroyed and already damaged by economic development.They are rebuilt because of business or tourism.So this part of culture is needed to be protected under such a situation.

Kwon-glazed procelain is a kind of decorative procelain that is mainly produced in Canton.As a traditional Chinese art,Kwon-glazed procelain has a long history.Dating back to Ming dynastyďźŒKwon-glazed procelain starts to appear in the folk.

And until Qing Dynasty,it gradually deceveloped into a

pretty

mature craft and form its specific style.Afterwards,combined with European technology ,Kwon-glazed procelain was extremely popular and was exported to many foreign countries.

Modern tie-dye is a whole new concept compared to traditional tie-dye,batik and blue calico these 3 kinds of traditional dyeing process: using modern resist-dyed technology and all kinds of special methods to create an industrialization art practice activity with three-dimensional or monochrome and multi-color blend of modern aesthetic significance graphic, which is apart from traditional methods and industrial dyeing.

As a kind of unique craft culture,just like traditional tiedye,modern tie-dye not only inherit the historical context but also essentially embody different cultural background and different characteristics of the times.

Tie-dye can be divided into 2 parts,tying and dyeing.By using yarn,string and rope, by tieing, sewing, bounding, decorating, cliping and so on to combine them together and them dye them.

It aims to prevent the bound part from being dyed,and allow the rest of the parts to be dyed evenly,in order to create color halo and crease mark with uneven depth and different levels.The tighter it’s tied the better it looks.Blue and white are the main colors used in tiedye,together they create a peaceful word,bringing people a sense of elegance ,representing peace and tolerance.

â—?After learning Chinese traditional knowledge, try to teach some children or citizens about what you have learned in creative ways. â—?According to your culture background and your culture learning and understanding in the project, work as a team to do some investigations and interviews of the current situation about the culture in Guangzhou.

It provides a stage for volunteers from different culture background to show their countries’ culture and ethos by talent performance and presenting souvenirs or traditional costumes.

At the same time, we will sell culture products to raise money for those hard-working handicraftsmen.

Culture Salon It provide a platform for EPs and buddies to share their stories and opinions on Chinese traditional culture learning and practicing. Trying to empower the citizens to know more about Chinese culture and even protect and spread the culture.

Culture Forum Cultural forum provides a wide stage for the interns. You can show and discuss your cultural achievements and cultural experience with scholar, students and citizens in order to protect the disappearing culture.

Also you can listen to the scholar and handicraftsmen’s speech and get some interesting culture knowledge.

1) Learn Chinese traditional culture like kongfu, paper-cutting, Kwon-glazed procelain and tea culture so on seriously.

2) Teach Guangzhou citizens paper-cutting knowledge and kungfu in creative ways and communicate with the citizens proactively to let them know more about multiculture.

3) Walk in GZ in your divided group (around 15 volunteers) to explore the Chinese traditional culture which are unknown to most Chinese like some handicraft, some stories and some masters. Record them and then make it in a video and an investigation report.

4) Perform your country dance, songs or other special shows with your country customs and bring some souvenirsďźŒalso please search some information about Maritime silk road culture of your country from your country for the Global Village.

5) After finishing the project, you should write a conclusion and investigation report and make a video to share your feeling about this project.

6) Be brave to speak out in some salons or forums to empower the audiences.

7) Thinking critically about protecting Chinese traditional culture and deliver it to others.

8) Attend the GLDS meeting ,on which you will meet other EPs from other cities and share your story. And you need to pay for yourself.

9) Obey the project regulations.(Really important)
