Editor’s Note Dear Readers: IT’S been awhile since the last issue of The Tribe. We had been busy for two great reasons. Firstly, AIESEC in SIM has held it’s first event in school, named ASYD 2012: Success Through Empowerment and we had received such positive feedback. Secondly, our annual recruitment campaign has come to a close in fashion and have seen us welcoming our new members for the 2012/13 year. I will also like to also commend my Communications team for the job well done as we have clinched the “Best Team Award” in recognition of our achievements! As we all know, February is the month where Love is in the air – It’s Valentine’s Day on February 14th. Let’s see Valentine’s Day not only as a day to celebrate with your partner, but take it as an occasion to celebrate the different forms of love you have had received over the years – kinship, friendship and those who had changed your life along the way. My team and I hope that you will enjoy this issue as much as the fun we had coming up with this issue. by Derek T. Chief Editor The Tribe

LCP’s Message FORGIVE me for jumping onto the bandwagon to talk about love just because it’s Valentine’s Day. But what more could I do, it IS a Valentine’s issue after all. The occasion DEMANDS it. More importantly, AIESEC is all about love. I know, I know, that sounded cheesy, even in my own head. But truth be told, I honestly feel that AIESEC is about love. Hear me out, please. The vision of AIESEC is “Peace and fulfillment of humankind’s potential”. We all know that. But for the longest time, my thought process (in brief) was always this; AIESEC empowers youth to achieve their dreams. This will keep them content and prevent conflict. After all, if we are content and have a stake in our future, conflict and tension is something we would all like to avoid. Recently though, a great friend of mine, Jayke from AIESEC in Monash, Australia shared with me an epiphany he had. He realized that “humankind’s potential” could refer to more than just skills and competencies. It had to refer to more than intelligence and soft skills and leadership skills and the like. He realized that humankind had the potential to love unconditionally. To feel love and compassion for a fellow human being was part of being human. Having realized that, he shared it with me. And now, I share it with you. For far too long many of us have focused on fulfilling the potential of our minds. I believe it is about time that we are cognizant of the fact that we ought to focus on fulfilling the potential of the human heart. We all have the capacity to love and care. Let’s fulfill that potential to love. I would like to leave you with a quote by Rumi, one of history’s great poets:

“Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” by Md Suhaile Local Chapter President (LCP) AIESEC in SIM

Ready, Jet-set, Go!

You „Gee‟ at every new K-pop video release on YouTube and feel „Sorry‟ at yourself for missing out on SNSD‟s last concert here. Don‟t just stay home like fermented kimchi this summer, GO EXCHANGE!

The Korean Connection I took part in the 'Summer Package of AIESEC Korea' (S.P.A.K) which was held from July to August organized by 3 LCs in Seoul. I was greeted by the warm smiles of Korean AIESECers and was glad to be part of the program with 18 other exchange participants (EPs) from Vietnam, Indonesia, India, China, Taiwan, Malaysia and Hong Kong. First week of exchange was all about understanding the general culture of Korea, such as basic

conversational skills, traditional practices and living lifestyles. I was amazed by the drinking habits and table manners of Koreans during one of the learning session. The second program was held in Busan, a 5-day competition jointly organized by Tourism Promotion Organization (T.O.P) and AIESEC in Yonsei University. Formed into groups with Korean and foreign students, the project required us to travel to various tourist sites of Busan and Geoje-city and come out with plans to promote the city. Lectures from tourism experts of other

countries were also held to gave deeper insights and share their views on the tourism outlook in Asia. The project was enriching and i had great time interacting with Tourism-major students and was grateful to their hospitality for showing us around the area. Moving back to Seoul, I participated in a program called GAIA, organized by Yonsei university. We had

history lessons about the Korean War, followed by visits to various historical sites related to the war, such as the History Museum and Prison Hall. Each of us EPs made a presentation about how we can pursue peace and it was great to hear from people of different countries' version of peace. An interactive forum session was also conducted with high school students on the

field-study missions and lots of fun! In all, I had a memorable trip to Seoul because of the friendship that I’ve built during these 6 weeks!

with Sogang students on international culture awareness. Each EPs' country presentation was conducted and Global Village was held during culture-learning day. A small campaign was also held in Insadong, a famous tourist street, to promote Korean culture to foreigners. We also had the chance to engage with VANK (Voluntary Agency Network Of KOREA) by having sharing sessions with VANK volunteers to share our views and suggestions on how to promote Korea and its culture. The final program was INNOVASIA, the International AIESEC conference held by Seoul National University (SNU). The theme was sustainable city. The 5-day event was filled with lecturers by various international bodies (SONY), small group discussions, interactive games,

Trailblazing!

In a bid to achieve our Big Hairy Audacious Goal (BHAG) of engaging and developing every young person in the world and our LC vision of empowering SIM students, LC SIM seeks for every opportunity possible to extend the AIESEC Experience beyond the AIESEC circle. Trailblazing is a column dedicated to this cause, following the trail that we have left behind for others to inspire.

TWO or three speakers is the norm when it comes to developmental workshops that we’re used to hearing. But seven?! Now, who would have thought it to be possible! The inaugural AIESEC in SIM Youth Dialogue (ASYD) 2012

9

was held on a fine Saturday morning of 4th February, welcoming over 70 participants primarily consisting of SIM students. Set on the theme of ‘Success through empowerment’, ASYD is an event that

is not only uniquely SIM, but also one of its kind in AIESEC Singapore. ASYD was designed to create awareness among SIM students of the gap that exists between academia and the working world. As

Trailblazing! such, we could say that this is the first step in our vision of empowering every SIM student to become leaders of world change. There were 3 parts to the event- networking lunch, breakout sessions and panel discussion. It kicked-off with an insightful keynote speech by Mr. Loy Cheow Chew, the former Head for Commodities & Gold/FXD of Government of Singapore Investment Corporation (GIC), after which the 7 corporate partners were introduced. But what’s unique about this event isn’t the delivery format nor the number of speakers. It was the diversity of speakers that made it possible for the event to be run in a way that multiple perspective can be given, based on a single theme. While we were honored by the showers of positive feedback from the participants, speakers and guests, perhaps the greater learning for us SIM AIESECers is the journey through making ASYD possible in the first place. Firstly, it was an opportunity for the new ‘tribesmen and women’ to get a feel of the experiential learning aspect of AIESEC, through working together and guided by the seniors. Nothing less could be said about synergy and teamwork as none of these

could happen without the united front that the LC showed in hard times. It was during these harsh moments that each of us realized the gap within ourselves and the need to bridge it with continuous personal improvement. Most importantly, it was only through our ‘tribal spirit’ that we uncovered the potential that we never though we had. Success through empowerment might be interpreted in many ways by those who attended, but for those involved in putting ASYD 2012 together, our success was from the personal leadership and empowerment that we exercised to make the tribe’s and hence AIESEC’s vision come true.

Interrogation Room So, we've all been so fortunate to have gotten so much support from PwC for Recruitment & AIESEC in SIM Youth Dialogue. Have you ever wondered how it was all possible? This issue, The Tribe gets down with Christine Lee Chen Ee – The National Partnership Manager of AIESEC Singapore.

Interrogation Room is now in session! CHRISTINE is not only the AIESEC Singapore National Partnership Manager with PwC, she is a 3rd year Business & Accountancy student (WOAH) and 3rd year AIESECer in the National University of Singapore. We are extremely pleased to have her recount some her experiences as an AIESECer and as National Partnership Manager!

11

TT: So tell us Christine, what is your AIESEC story. C: I joined AIESEC as a member in AIESEC in NUS Projects Social Entrepreneurship back in 2009. My first impression of AIESEC is that it is a very diverse and global student organization and I am totally amazed by the level of energy that the members have. I started as a member in the project department,

helping the team in coordinating the agenda and servicing the delegate for the Neue Thinken Symposium. After which, I went to Taiwan for an AIESEC Developmental Traineeship program (a.k.a GCDP) helping with English and cultural teaching. After a year in AIESEC, I decided to step up and ran for the VP AIESEC Experience (Branding and Communication) of AIESEC in NUS. This decision

Interrogation Room effective and promises are being delivered with quality and timely. TT: Obviously you are the NPM with PwC. Why PwC?

was very much influenced by previous seniors in AIESEC who showed so much energy and passion in the organization and I just want to feel the same way and be proud of AIESEC as much as they do and a leadership role is definitely a ‘YES’. I was back then promoting the Exchange and Leadership experiences in AIESEC with my fellow AIESEC XP team. Despite being new to the role, the AIESEC environment gives me the support and the motivation to try new things and just make things possible. Also, to constantly sustaining the flame, I get myself very involved in various conferences like Jumpstart and NLDC and to know as many AIESECers as possible, they are the source of

inspiration and definitely someone who make you stay in the organization. TT: So what is an AIESEC National Partnership Manager? How and when did you run for it? C: I continued to take leadership role after the end of the term as a VP AIESEC Experience (Branding and Communications) by running the position of a NPM in 2011. As a National Partnership Manager, we are tasked to manage, deliver the partnership deliverables to our distinguish partner ranging from planning, execution and reviewing. In general, we are the coordinator between AIESEC and the Partner and to ensure communication is

C: Firstly, it was really because PwC is AIESEC Singapore’s first official national partner after about 40 years of history. And of course, the supports given by PwC are incredible and empowering to AIESECers ever since NLDC 2010. Personally, I resonate well with PwC as the partnership experience thus far are very supportive and encouraging. And as some of us here may already know, the top leaders of PwC came down to grace our events in NLDC and even gave us AIESECers the confidence to continue in making impact in other people’s lives and endorse us to be a recognized global youth leadership organization. TT: What were the challenges that you saw before taking up the role? C: Firstly, I thought the challenges were mainly the lack of experience in dealing and managing a partnership especially when my previous background revolves around

12

Interrogation Room promoting AIESEC Experience to students. Secondly, it was out of my comfort zone to really expose myself to the corporate and sustain the relationships with our Partner. However, these challenges were overcome when you get the hang of it and especially when the team under the guidance and advice of Tony Yin (MC VP BD) and Grace (MCP), we were very well brought to our routine and cope with it. In fact, the main challenge is more on aligning the goals between AIESEC and the Partner and maximizing the benefits of the two.

TT: What do you think you'll miss most after the end of your term?

TT: Do you think the role of a National Partnership Manager has lived up to your expectations?

C: If you have the call to be someone who loves to grow the partnership, to sustain the relationship with the Partner and someone who loves to step up to be the

C: Yes, I would say that the role is very broad and flexible. One can always take up additional roles beyond the capacity as a Partnership Manager. For me, I thought the role was very well defined and it lives up to my expectation in terms of the fulfilling experience gained and the corporate exposure I have gotten. It also gave me the edge of multitasking, prioritizing and communicating effectively.

13

C: I will miss the opportunity to work on the partnership directly and to be involved hands-on with collaborations and events with fellow AIESECers. Fret not, being an alumni in supporting the collaborations and be engaged with AIESEC will be something that I will continue even after my term. TT: Any advice of AIESECers who may be interested?

FACTS ABOUT LOVE Adapted from www.sheknows.com When did it all start? There are various theories on the origin of Valentine’s Day, but the most popular dates back to the time of the Roman Empire during the Roman Empire during the reign of Claudius II, 270 AD. Claudius didn't want men to marry during wartime because he believed single men made better soldiers. Bishop Valentine went against his wishes and performed secret wedding ceremonies. For this, Valentine was jailed and then executed by order of the Emperor on February 14. While in jail, he wrote a love note to the jailor's daughter signing it, "From your Valentine." Sound familiar?

19

More Valentine's Day-related History The ancient Romans celebrated the Feast of Lupercalia on February 14th in honor of Juno, the queen of the Roman gods and goddesses. Juno was also the goddess of women and marriage. Many believe the 'X' symbol became synonymous with the kiss in medieval times. People who couldn't write their names signed in front of a witness with an 'X.' The 'X' was then kissed to show their sincerity. Girls of medieval times ate bizarre foods on St. Valentine's Day to make them dream of their future spouse. In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who would be their Valentine. They would wear this name pinned onto their sleeves for one week for everyone to see. This was the origin of the expression "to wear your heart on your sleeve." In 1537, England's King Henry VII officially declared February 14th the holiday of St. Valentine's Day.

Theme Feature Chocolate Casanova, well known as "The World's Greatest Lover," ate chocolate to make him virile. Physicians of the 1800's commonly advised their patients to eat chocolate to calm their pining for lost love. Richard Cadbury produced the first box of chocolates for Valentine's Day in the late 1800's. More than 35 million heart-

shaped boxes of chocolate will be sold for Valentine's Day. Over $1 billion worth of chocolate is purchased for Valentine's Day in the U.S. Flowers 73% of people who buy flowers for Valentine's Day are men, while only 27 percent are women. 15% of

U.S. women send themselves flowers on Valentine's Day. Roses The red rose was the favorite flower of Venus, the Roman goddess of love. Red roses are considered the flower of love because the color red stands for strong romantic feelings. 189 million stems of roses are sold in the U.S. on Valentine's Day. Greeting Cards Approximately one billion Valentines are sent out worldwide each year according to estimates by the U.S. Greeting Card Association. That's second only to Christmas. Women purchase approximately 85 percent of all Valentines. Teachers will

receive the most Valentine's Day cards, followed by children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets. And... More fun facts about Valentine's Day The most fantastic gift of love is the Taj Mahal in India. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shahjahan as a memorial to his wife. Every Valentine's Day, the Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare's lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet. About 3% of pet owners will give Valentine's Day gifts to their pets.

In the US, 64 percent of men do not make plans in advance for a romantic Valentine's Day with their sweethearts. Happy Valentine's Day!

Chill Pill Must Eat! Lao Ban Soya Beancurd (Old Airport Road) Address: 51 Old Airport Road, #01-127 Old Airport Road Food Centre 1 Kadayanallur Street, #01-91 Maxwell Food Centre

Step aside, Rochor Tau Huay, Lao Ban Soya beancured is here! The former has been the beancurd of choice for decades now with its very traditio nal preparation and smooth tasting beancurd that is something that most Singapor eans can identify with as part of one’s culture. But hey, it’s eleven years into the ne w millennium and innovation is very exciting concept which has probably sparked the creation of this very cool pudding-like rendition of a our typical soya beancurd. So what makes it different and fresh? Apparently, the silky smooth texture and con sistency of the pudding feels great on your taste buds. Flavours include almond an d orginal. Both taste great enough for people to fawn over - which may explain the long queues and them beancurds getting sold out within mere hours. It costs at $1.50 per tub, which may be a little pricey for some, though I strongly en courage everyone to try it at least once. Only then will you understand all hype wit h its savoury taste.

Chill Pill Film : The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo Released : 2012

Film Review

Last month's movie was a tough act to follow. Simply because it was tastefully made. But this is a whole new category of film altogether.

The girl with the dragon tattoo - a dark, horrifying and icy (literally) tale based on the best selling millennium trilogy. Award winning director David Fincher, accompanied with his stellar cast of Daniel Craig, Christopher Plumber, Stellan Skarsgard and the e ver so beautiful Rooney Mara. Fincher's adaptation maintains the novel's integrity with his meticulous direction and he has re-engaged his former partners-in-crimes Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross to score this film. The result is cluedo-like and chilly experience where visual and audio snergistically transcends the film onto a league of its own that puts Detective Holmes to shame. Please be warned that the brutal scenes are also hair-raising, which more than warrants its R21 rating.

Also, The soundtrack is a full three hours available only on vinyl format for a whopping 300 dollars. All in all, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is a mu st watch for all lovers of film and to anyone who wishes to enjoy it purely as an art form.

Aunt Agony

AUNT AGONY In need of some sound advice? Help is just an email away, feel free to contact Aunt Agony with your problem and you will be able to see her response in the next issue. All identities are kept anonymous. Ask Aunt Agony at www.sim.aiesec.org.sg!

Hi Aunt Agony, Suppose I have developed some ""interest or admiration"" towards a fellow aiescer, what should I do? I will have to work with him/her for at least another year and how is it possible to remain professional? Should I tell him/her only after one of us graduates?" Signed, Anonymous Hello  Firstly, here is no ‘right/wrong’ time to tell someone how you feel for them. Of course when you do, you have to ensure your feelings are real. Once that’s settled, you can tell them how you feel whenever. Even if you’re in the same organization with them. There’s no point in waiting (ONCE YOU’RE SURE ABOUT YOUR FEELINGS). There’ll always be something stopping you. So, once you know your feelings are real, just say it. Regarding the ‘keeping it professional’ issue, I shall state a few do’s and don’ts. One of the most important things you have to DO is: Keep your work & your personal issues separate. This is one of the hardest tasks. Let’s say you have a misunderstanding at an AIESEC meeting, you cannot let it affect your relationship once you leave the meeting room. Next, knowing that y’all are in the same organization, should things not work out between y’all, you DO have to end things amicably. This will prevent inconveniences to yourselves & to those working with both of you. You don’t want a situation where your failed relationship causes those around you to have to go out of the way just because y’all can’t see eye to eye. Y’all will be seeing each other at meetings and conferences, etc. Ignoring each other is NOT an option. So, ensure that you’ll

23

Aunt Agony (Cont’) have spoken about why you’re breaking up & how you’re going to behave towards one another. Lastly, DON’T mix business with pleasure. If you’re with someone, be with that person because you love them. Not because you love power & want your partner to help you climb up the ladder or just because you know he/she is really good at a certain project so you be with him/her, then you take the credit for it. Love is a beautiful thing. If your feelings are real (for the fifth time!!), use Valentine’s day as an opportunity to tell him/her how you feel. And if you handle it maturely, the relationship will definitely bloom! Good luck ;) Dear Aunt Agony, I’m in love. She and I are really close friends and I have fallen for her. Everything is great except that……….. She’s older than me by 4 years. We have spoken about older women dating younger men before but she didn’t give any clue about whether she’s comfortable with it. Will It work? Should I tell her how I feel? Signed, Too Young to Love.

That’s definitely a dilemma you’re in. For most girls, dating a guy 1, or even 2 years younger is not too bad. But having to date a guy 4 years younger can be quite a challenge! It’s challenging but not impossible. Both of your characters play a big role in this. Since I don’t know either of you, I will be using general male and female personality traits to advice you. As you know, a man usually doesn’t have issues with dating an older woman. But a woman is usually the one who feels unsure. Why?? The main issue is maturity - Physically, Mentally & Emotionally. Physically – A woman who is 1 or 2 years younger than a man can still end up looking older than the man. So can you imagine if she’s older than you? This can lead to insecurities on a girls part. Which will turn into trust issues, etc. It might even make a man feel like he ‘deserves better’. Mentally – It’s a known fact that women mature faster than men. Women think more wisely than men. This gap of maturity can cause her to find you childish and for you to find her too serious. A gap of 4 years, you said? So while you’re still enjoying university days or just looking for a job, she’ll be 30, wanting to settle down as soon as possible.

24

Aunt Agony (Cont’) Emotionally – The way your react to problems and arguments, etc. will also vary. Already, men and women emotions are very different to situations. On top of that, you’re younger. Now, by listing these cons of dating an older woman/younger man (for women), is not to discourage you. It’s to make you realise the various problems that might arise and for you to ask yourself if you’ll be able to handle it and also for you to make her aware of these issues, once you’re with her. There are a few things you can do: (1) Make your woman feel secure. Don’t use her age as an excuse in arguments. (2) Be more matured. Try to think what might be going through her mind. And what you would do if you were at that age. (3) Date an older woman the exact same way you would date a younger woman. (4) LOVE HER. That’s most important to make ANY relationship work. My advice? Give it a shot. She might reject you & it’ll hurt for a bit. But it’s better to know that you tried & failed than to wonder how it would or could have been. Happy Valentines’ day!! ;)

”Love is that condition in which the happiness of another person is essential to your own.” - Robert   Heinlein

What does it mean?

When you are in love, most probably, Robert Heinlein believes that you forget yourself and you tend to care much about another person's condition and happiness. When you find the other person happy then you find yourself happy too or contented, then that is love. (Source: http://www.1-love-quotes.com/article/984567)
