PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY

Bachelor of Science Program in Architectural Intelligence and Design Thinking (AIDT) responds to the change of design paradigm and combines the expertise needed in the 21st century by developing design innovation that answers international standards. This increases the ability of Thai designers and allows recognition at both domestic and global levels.

Students at AIDT prosper their identity through an integrated understanding of the social, cultural, and technological aspects of the world. The program focuses on increasing work efficiency (productivity) and the ability to compete (Competitive Advantage) through practising digital technology and architecture.

AIDT extends various opportunities for career options and enables students to advance indepth knowledge and expertise.

Designing architecture comes from the systematic creation of design concepts (Design Thinking process) with acknowledgement to certain rules and regulations from research and investigation.

AIDT students gather information in an interactive manner with the community to generate a greater understanding of the economic, social, cultural, and ecological dimensions of the world. This leads to the synthesis of a wholesome understanding of the environment and the quality of life.

Furthermore, it results in high architectural quality and originates new design innovation based on social capital, culture, technology, and resources with sustainable development.

Therefore, the creation and the development of the curriculum base on an understanding of current changes in society and technology, allowing multidisciplinary integration.

In addition, AIDT curriculum corresponds to the mission, vision, university development plan, and National Qualification Framework for Higher Education. AIDT program aims to create graduates who are ready to leap forward in pursuing a career with quality, processing knowledge and understanding of morals, ethics, innovation, and modern technology.

MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN

It is my great pleasure to be a part of such as great team, both AIDT staff and students. We believe that by grooming the next generation with future skills and competency, they can help us foresight how we make our community and the world a better inclusive place.

Architectural Intelligence and Design Thinking (AIDT) is the first competencybased international program of the School of Architecture, Art, and Design (AAD) at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL). This program prioritises the universal value of learning and living for future citizens throughout four modules based on a global mindset sprung from local intelligence. The four modules are: Module I) Digital Architecture Computer and Information Technology (IT) connect our world like never before. They bridge the gap and widen opportunities to learn across different living cultures. Digital mindset helps learners create a new paradigm of how we experience the built environment as well as generate a more transparent design process.

Module II) Sustainable Tropical Design Global awareness inspires and sits as a core for this module. Young architects can utilise their local intelligence with the integration of climate and environmental resources to tackle global warming challenges. Tropical design works to achieve sustainable energy consumption and optimal thermal comfort. Sustainable solutions and innovation can also improve millions of affordable habitats for lower-income people throughout the world.

Facility

Professional architects mostly experience a lack of managerial competency. This module fulfils collaboration and coordination competencies, allowing architects to work with engineers, contractors, accountants, etc. to ensure that project teams deliver the most efficient and the best quality of building projects.

Module IV) Design Thinking In today’s world comes an ocean of data.

Future architects require a good tool to catch good data. User experience is centred around the design process in creating innovation for design to improve quality of life. This Design Thinking module emphasises such a design process.

Diversity and Inclusion I have a strong commitment to creating value for diversity and inclusion. I am ensuring that AIDT includes wider talent and diversity of learning abilities of the learners.

AIDT staffs both full-time and part-time have different cultural backgrounds, ranging from Europe, America, and Asia. Moreover, the value of the learning experience is placed as the central part of our pedagogy.

AIDT program holds a learner-centric approach.

The program brings students outside their classroom to explore how experts create their designs in real life.

Lead by Example At AIDT, we lead learners to learn from experts.

During the pandemic in 2020 and 2021, AIDT students gain their learning experience from our partners such as Cobra International, AppliCAD, Future Tales Lab, and Thai Obayashi at the O-NES Tower.

Always, our full-time and part-time lecturers inspire students to gain hands-on experience through doing things and creating an inclusive and collaborative work environment.

Additionally, the group projects such as the design competition for a convenience store on Mars and other design workshops present how we deliver leadership skills to AIDT students.

In this unusual situation, for me as a global citizen as well as the Dean of the School of AAD, I would like to invite you to be a part of our mission to be the ‘creative change agents’ to contribute your unique talent and point of view to our community.

DIRECTOR STATEMENT

“To be a strong leader with environmental innovation” - KMITL Goal

Architectural Intelligence and Design Thinking (AIDT) in an international program that offers four tracks including Digital Architecture, Construction and Facility Management, Sustainable and Tropical Design, and Design Thinking to earn the Bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSc Arch.). Students can pursue their interests for a future career. The career in which they create by themselves.

Now, the international program is not only about learning everything in English but also provide the international mindset of multinationalities and harmony in a diversity of people. Multiple languages will be replaced

by Architectural Communication in terms of 3-Dimensional Graphics and Narrative of the project that will be transformed into Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality or Mixed Reality, as well as beyond the edge of the future communicational technology.

AIDT aims to be the leader in both technology and philosophy. Becoming a School of Thoughts that create a paradigm shift to the World of Technology and Design is the ultimate goal of our program. AIDT has also been created to develop future professionals in Architectural and Design. Finally, Architectural Intelligence along with Design Thinking will create endless possibilities for our students.

Course Description

This course introduces both fundamental processes and concepts of design thinking and making to early design students. Architectural Design Fundamentals course focuses on exploring and practising the spatial organisation of dots, lines, and planes to create basic compositions and meeting with the current aesthetic standard in architecture.

Students are provided with examples of good design and buildings from both domestic and international architectural case studies to learn from.

Expected Learning Outcome

The course contains 3 main Expected Learning Outcomes which are: a) the students can understand fundamental design processes and use these processes to develop design concepts; b) the students can develop and create design projects; and c) the students can efficiently present their designs, using integrated presentation medium and techniques.

Course Description

In this course, students practice geometric drawing of architectural forms and their environment. Individually, students experiment and study lettering, orthographic projection (including shades and shadows), isometric and axonometric drawings, and the basic rules of perspective drawing with current technologies.

Expected Learning Outcome

The Expected Learning Outcomes for this course are for students to demonstrate their competencies in using architectural drawing tools and techniques, as well as present architectural drawings professionally.

Course Description

This course introduces the use of hand tools and workshop equipment to develop rapid study models and mid-fidelity prototypes related to industrial design. Students build study models of products to professional standards of accuracy and finishes with an emphasis on rapid development. All aspects of workshop practice and safety are also covered.

Expected Learning Outcome

This course holds Expected Learning Outcomes of : a) Students can describe and apply material properties; b) Students can identify and implement the uses of scale and dimension in 2D and 3D; c) Students can describe and apply aesthetics and proportion; d) Students can produce objects from their learned hand-skills; and e) Students can use the technical workshop and specific equipment.

Course Description

This module explores the overall systems and fundamental components of buildings, the properties of construction materials, and basic wood structure drawing.

By the end of the module, students should be able to convert drawings into finished products in a workshop. In addition, this course contains a construction drawing lab.

Course Description

This course provides practice in the use of English in language skills for academic purposes. For example, using references, reading non-verbal texts, summary writing, listening and discussion, grammar revision, and further practice in social language.

Course Description

The course is designed to help AIDT architecture and design students become better communicators in English in all four language skills, speaking, listening, reading and writing. It will focus on vocabulary development and presentation skills to give students a basic foundation for communication their professional working field. Classes will include project-based discussions and written tasks and out-of-class assignments that will aim at supplementing in-class activities.

Course Description

This course continues the fundamental process and concepts of design thinking and making from the Architectural Design Fundamentals course. This module further develops skills necessary to create architectural compositions, focusing on form and spatial organisation. At the same time, it also encourages students to develop a sense of aesthetics and an awareness of functions, proportions, and use behaviours. Knowledge gained from this course is integrated with an understanding of building materials, structure, and the environment.

Expected Learning Outcome

For this course, students are expected to: a) identify and implement architectural design processes for small houses design; b) generate creative ideas with an understanding of the spatial organisation, architectural composition, awareness of functions, proportions, and user behaviours for designing small houses; and c) produce a communicative architectural presentation.

COMPUTER-AIDED ARCHITECTUtRAL DESIGN 1 Instructors Dr Satakhun Kosavinta

Course Description

The course explores and criticises existing Computer-Aided Design software such as AutoCAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, Sketchup, Revit, ArchiCAD, etc. Students in this course are introduced to various tools and techniques.

However, they are encouraged to formulate their language which represents their critical and creative mind the most.

Expected Learning Outcome

At the end of this course, students are expected to: a) identify and implement the use of Computer-Aided Architectural Design (CAAD) software and systems for architectural practice; b) describe and apply the principle of using digital technology for digital design and develop their capacity to acquire the new tools; and c) produce architectural drawings and presentation material from CAAD software.

Course Description

Material and methods – building construction is examined from standpoints of life safety (including fire safety and zoning restriction on site planning), building service systems (plumbing, electrical, vertical transportation, security, and fire protection), material, sustainability, and lifecycle analysis, technical documentation, and outline specification. The course also continues with students in the construction drawing lab from the first semester.

HISTORY OF ARCHITECTURE

Course Description

History of architecture course will give a compact overview of evolution of architecture and development of architect profession, starting from first known man-made structures and concluding with contemporary exploration of VR and AR integration of architectural designs. Focus of the course will be on 20th century and Thai architecture as most relevant for practice orientated curriculum.

Although structure of the course is organized chronologically each lecture of the course will highlight certain aspect of architecture or approach to it as most significant to particular era. These “keywords” will be later referenced in subsequent lectures highlighting correlation between different periods of history or similarities between different cultures.

The course will underscore architecture evolutionary and self-referential character as well as its dependence on climate, location, culture and even political background.

The aim of the course is to make students realize that history of architecture is not a closed, irrelevant chapter of evolution but ever-growing source of valid and relevant knowledge.

Due to compact character of the course (16 lectures) each chapter will be followed by listing of significant buildings, peoples, events as well as reading list allowing students to further pursue knowledge in interesting for them area.

Each course instalment will consist out of two parts: a lecture and active learning exercise where students will need to analyse, interpret or apply acquired knowledge.

Course Description

This course follows the first term English for Architectural Communication.

Students will be taught how to read, analyze and discuss analytical data from architectural case studies and to present their findings in a professional manner. They will also be taught how to critique reading material and presentations and how to write a summary report on presentations they have watched.

INTRODUCTION TO ECONOMICS

Course Description

This course introduces definitions and concepts in economics. It covers topics such as market economy, roles of the government, demand and supply, marginal analysis, optimisation, costs, and the production theory. It also includes macroeconomic theory, aggregated demand, the demand of money, central bank and monetary policy, government and fiscal policy, inflation and unemployment, the balance of payment, and exchange rate.

The course is hosted by NIDA (the National Institute of Development Administration) as a part of an MOU with AIDT.

Description

This event marked the first-ever open house to showcase the AIDT program to the interested public. During the day, the program invited parents and students to participate in activities and to ask any possible questions regarding the program. The event was wellreceived by the public.

Description

Being an architect also requires extensive knowledge of building materials and how they are constructed together.

Therefore, AIDT students were then provided opportunities to experiment with actual material with supervision from experts. In This workshop, students were experimenting with basic building materials such as steel, wood, and concrete.

Description

This was a 2-day emergent workshop corresponding to the design competition hosted by the university. The competition was to design a new 7-Eleven store that will be built at the campus. AIDT students were divided into 2 teams and work collaboratively together with their instructors. The workshop presented an opportunity for students to work in a practical setting and site.

This was the first field trip of AIDT. Students had a chance to visit Cobra International on 24th September 2020.

Cobra International is one of the leading manufacturers of products from composite materials such as surfboards, boats, automobile parts, drones, building components, etc.

Description

AIDT students were visiting AppliCAD Thailand on their 2nd field trip in the 2020-2021 academic year. AppliCAD was internationally recognised as a solution provider for architectural, engineering, and construction businesses.

Description

FutureTales Lab is a research centre for future solutions planning, cooperation, and proactive advocacy. Students from AIDT had gained insightful knowledge and perspectives on innovative topics such as robotics, space exploration, etc. The field trip is a part of the Architectural Design Fundamentals subject.

Description

This field trip to O-NES Tower was organised by the Thai Obayashi Architects and Engineers Team. Students were given a special lecture by the project architect and the lead engineer and were offered a tour of the tower in construction. During the visit, students were gaining practical experience as future architects but also about site and construction management.

Asst Prof Dr Antika Sawadsri

Antika has 3 years of professional experience as Interior Designer at 3D Planning, and P49 Design and Association. Her academic interest focuses on the interplay between people with disabilities and their built environment in private and public spaces. Recently, Antika is working as a Dean at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design at KMITL. In 2020, she launched the international architectural program named ‘Architectural Intelligence and Design Thinking (AIDT)’.

It is the first international program of the school and consisted of 4 specialised modules. This program tries to create the next frontier of Architecture study for the coming new generation.

Asst Prof Dr Thirayu Jumsai na Ayudhya

Asst. Prof. Dr Thirayu Jumsai na Ayudhya was granted the Thai Government Scholarship in 2009 for the doctoral degree study. In 2015, he was awarded PhD in Architecture from the School of Architecture and Built Environment, Queensland University of Technology (QUT), Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. He started his academic career in 2005 as a lecturer at the Department of Interior Architecture, KMITL. He works on a wide range of research topics in architectural theory, including architectural experience, sense of place, environmental psychology, and design for people with disabilities. He is also interested in semiotics in architecture. For professional practice, he has been working as a registered architect in Thailand since 1999. During his living in Australia, he worked as the architect and the project coordinator with the Australian architectural design firm, Noel Robinson Architect (NRA) in Brisbane.

Dr Satakhun Kosavinta

Dr Satakhun is a full-time Lecturer at the School of Architecture, Art, and Design, at King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang (KMITL). He graduated with a first-class honour degree in architecture both bachelor of Science in Architecture (BSc. Arch), Master of Architecture (MArch) from Thammasat University and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Management from the Asian Institute of Technology (AIT). His expertise is related to Information Technology for decision making in residential development. He can use data to generate alternative ideas for architectural design and implementing Building Information Modelling (BIM) systems for construction firms.

His research areas include Digital Architecture, Decision Making, Prospect Theory, BIM, and Information Technology related to the design and construction industry.

Jakub Gardolinski

Jakub Gardolinski, of Polish origin, is a graduate of Vienna University of Technology and Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich. He has extensive professional experience working in Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Poland, Thailand and on projects in China. Since 2015 he has led his practice Paisalwattana Gardolinski Architects Co., Ltd. located in Bangkok engaging in a variety of projects ranging from a hospital to playground or train interior design.

Apart from professional practice, Jakub has been active in the academic field teaching and coordinating design, theory and technology courses in the School of Architecture and Design SoAD in King Mongkut University of Technology Thonburi and Interior Architecture Department in Chulalongkorn University. Additionally, Jakub remains a popular guest critic in such universities or programs as INDA, UDDI, Rangsit University, Silapakorn University, and Kasetsart University and have organized several independent design workshop through his office PAGAA. Committed to fostering an architectural culture in Thailand, Jakub remains extensively involved in the organisation of various events with the Association of Siamese Architects, such as ASA EXPO 2107, 2018 and 2022 also participating in Bangkok Design Week on numerous occasions and other events. In AIDT Jakub coordinates courses on History of Architecture, Sustainable Design, and year 2 Architectural Design.

Assoc Prof James R Haft

James, who is American, is currently an academic advisor to the Faculty of Architecture, KMITL, at the moment focusing on the AIDT international program. He is also a lecturer teaching English for Architectural Communication in the first term and English for Architectural Presentation in the second term for first-year SADI international college students. For nearly 20 years, James has served as public speaking and debate trainer and adjudicator for the Thai Ministry of Education and more recently for the National Commission on Human Rights.

Previously, James was the international programs coordinator for the Faculty of Communication Arts, Chulalongkorn University where he continues to teach Public Speaking and Mass Media. He also taught Introduction to Communication at the Communication Design international program of the Faculty of Architecture, Chulalongkorn University. In addition, James continues to work in journalism and advertising and is a translator of books, articles and advertising from Thai and Spanish to English and vice versa, and he is currently the editor-in-chief of the magazine “Elite+”.

Assoc Prof Dr Preechaya Rangsiraksa

Preechaya Rangsiraksa received a bachelor’s degree in Architecture from Silpakorn University, a Master’s, and a PhD in Architecture from the University of Queensland Australia.

She has been a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, KMITL since 1983. Her research is related to energy conservation in building design, tropical architectural design, noise control and room acoustics. Preechaya used to run her own architectural design company from 1992 to 2017 and has worked on many architectural projects including hotels, schools, stadiums, apartments, factories, and many housing projects.

Dr Prompt Udomdech

Prompt Udomdech is a special lecturer in architectural building systems and architectural intelligence. He received a PhD in Construction and Project Management from the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction, University College London (UCL), UK. Prompt research interests involve BIM (Building Information Modelling) and digital transformation in the construction industry. Additionally, he runs a project management firm for social housing projects in Thailand and works as a BIM consultant for construction businesses.

Sebastian Epkes

Sebastian Epkes is a German architect who studied architecture, urban design and product design in Hamburg and Zurich. He has experience as a practising architect working in Hamburg, Shanghai and Bangkok. He is currently a full-time lecturer at AIDT, teaching Architectural Design and History and Theory of Architecture.

Tara Cull

Tara Cull is a special lecturer in English for Architecture Communication and English for Architecture Presentations . She has a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from The University of Melbourne, Melbourne Australia and a Master of Teaching from Deakin University, Melbourne.

She runs her own business working globally with built design professionals around the world who want to improve their confidence and English communication skills. Additionally, she works as a freelance landscape architect on residential projects in Australia from Montpellier in France.

Asst Prof Yann Hin-Son Hui

Currently, Yann Hui is serving as Assistant Professor of Architecture and Committee Member at AIDT KMITL. Yann Hui is a British Architect RIBA ARB (UK) with over twelve (12+) years (2004 - 2016) worth of international professional practice experience (Architecture), combined with over four (4+) years of academic experience (Architecture). Central to Yann Hui’s professional experience is his four (4) years of involvement (full-time) of the design and realisation of the Mass Transit Railway Corporation’s (MTRC) West Kowloon Station (WKS) – Express Rail Link (XRL) project in Hong Kong SAR (China), the largest underground international High-Speed Rail (HSR) station in the world.

Admission Requirement
