Her work is founded in projects that engage and serve their communities: schools, libraries, community centers, public health, and higher education.

Savoy Club is a modern amenity suite that seamlessly bridges past and present, housed in an environment that captures the mid-century optimism of storied skyscrapers. Located in the 1968 General Motors building, the architects created a sophisticated hub that supports workers with three components: Food & Beverage (complete with prep kitchen), Conference Center & Lounge, and Fitness & Wellness Center. The timeless mid-century modern design of architect Edward Durrel Stone, in particular the building’s classic lobby, is celebrated and reflected in the club’s upscale, tailored design.

Gathering House is a multi-use event space for residents and guests of The Homesteads – Reynolds Lake Oconee community. The surrounding site is heavily forested and defined by the abundance of large granite boulders. Due to this unique environmental condition, the building’s programmatic components were situated between existing boulders. The result is a building that is intentionally dispersed while simultaneously framing the context it occupies. Transparency between programmatic elements maintains visual connectivity allowing visitors to flow naturally between interior, exterior and the surrounding landscape. The building itself is defined by its timber structure and simple material palette of glass and stone.

The Goat Farm site has, over time, woven a rich tapestry of chaos and order. A partnership between a multifamily developer and a renowned arts organization, the task of bringing in apartments and artist studios would necessarily deposit a high concentration of order to the campus.

Unabashedly contemporary, the design solutions were aimed at balancing that order through shape and form, while not attempting to camouflage change. The Goat Farm Apartments help reimagine and ignite a historic arts campus with 19th century industrial buildings to embrace the future and thrive as a mixed-use artistic hub.

Located on author Flannery O’Connor’s Andalusia homestead, the new Interpretive Center is a modern reinterpretation of the agrarian vernacular of the historic farm site. Inside, a spacious exhibit room features permanent and rotating displays, complemented by a bookstore, collections storage, and administrative office space. The center serves as an educational and cultural resource that supports the historic site and preserves O’Connor’s legacy through campus programs and public events. Designed for scholarly research and visitor engagement, the interpretive center will celebrate literature, history and the legacy of Flannery O’Connor and will underscore Andalusia as a cherished destination for enthusiasts worldwide.

Westside Paper is an adaptive reuse project for the warehouse building and site that was once home to the Atlanta Paper Company (APC), the longtime packaging manufacturer for Coca-Cola Company, itself located just a couple of miles south along a rapidly redeveloping city corridor.

The client, Third & Urban, is an experienced local developer who has completed a handful of high-profile infill projects in Atlanta. Looking for more than a Cor-Ten steel makeover into creative-class retail and office space, the goal was to transform a postindustrial barrier into a distinctive neighborhood anchor with public-access open spaces.

Designed for a young professional couple and their teenage daughter, the Honabach House is located on a 1 1/4-acre wooded site which slopes down from the street to a small creek at the rear of the property.

The project brief called for a 4-bedroom house, with an open kitchen, dining and living room spaces adjacent to large on-grade outdoor entertainment areas. Working with the natural slope of the land, the design locates the bedrooms on the upper, entry level and the entertainment spaces on the lower, on-grade terrace level. The design creates a 2-story house that appears as a smaller, more contextual 1-story house from the street.

Morrison Yard has become an iconic landmark in Charleston, seemingly overnight. Occupying a once vacant parcel at the foot of the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, its distinctive architecture borrows from the building’s nearby context, referencing the port through the massing of the office building. An activated pedestrian plaza embraces the wetlands and views of the Cooper River. Pulling the parking out from the building footprint allowed for a more efficient and economical structure while reinforcing the site’s stunning views. Morrison Yard not only raises the architectural bar, it redefines how to approach sustainability as Charleston’s first ‘RISES’ building.

The Agriculture and Natural Resources Building is mission-critical to all the Institute of Agriculture’s key functions: It supports discovery research in multiple departments. It houses offices for Extension specialists and outreach conducted by the Smith Center for International Sustainable Agriculture, and the building provides state-of-the-art facilities for teaching and learning. The 10,000-sf green roof with Tennessee native plant colonies modeling four distinct ecological horticultures provides outdoor learning spaces and research plots while managing stormwater in its soil matrix. Informal learning spaces distributed on all floors adjacent to classrooms, class laboratories, and research laboratories, enhance interdisciplinary, peer-to-peer learning.

Roosevelt Hall is the sole remaining structure of University Homes, the nation’s first federally funded public housing project for African American families. The restoration and renovation of Roosevelt Hall demonstrates the transformative impact historic buildings can have on public housing and community development. After years of sitting vacant, the building has been returned to its original purpose and now serves as a vibrant anchor for the neighborhood’s ongoing revitalization.

The Cardon Film Studio re-imagines a derelict lot in Decatur’s Downtown District into a center of creativity for the Motion Picture Arts. Celebrating the owner’s childhood home & culture, the plan was inspired by the Spanish Colonial courtyard blocks of Granada, Nicaragua. The lobby, workspace, break kitchen and film studio are centered around a vibrant courtyard, providing views, light and a natural gathering place. This layout enhances visibility and accessibility, inviting employees to step outside of their typical working environments while fostering a buildingcentric sense of community that extends past its walls into the greater Downtown Decatur community.

This premium urban residential development appeals to modern design enthusiasts. The sleek, minimalist townhouses feature clean lines, large floor-to-ceiling windows, and sharp angular overhangs that seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living. A monochromatic façade accented with dark panels and warm wood contrasts with carefully placed greenery and elevated planters along the sidewalk, harmonizing built form with nature. Elevated above street level with private access steps, the design ensures resident privacy while providing inviting outdoor relaxation spaces, ultimately delivering a high-quality, contemporary living experience.

The project includes two related houses designed for multiple generations of a single family on a North Carolina mountain estate. Our work began with careful study of a 40+ acre mountaintop property, arriving at a site selection which balanced views, solar gain, and protection from prevailing winds. In positioning the houses relative to each other we were careful to consider privacy and autonomy while wanting to facilitate communal gathering. The houses, which take on somewhat traditional forms, are bridged by a modern, glazed connecting structure which contains much of the communal activities while orienting towards spectacular long-range mountain views.

The Chickamauga Retreat is an off-grid reflection space located on a vacation property situated in the Chickamauga Valley. The project creates a place for the CEO of a fortune 100 company to escape the pressure of work by retreating to a remote location to read and reflect on the natural beauty of the surrounding property. The structure is lifted above the ground plane and designed in a manner that minimizes contact points with the earth, allowing the natural flora and fauna to move through the project site with minimal disruption while enhancing the dramatic views of the surrounding landscape.

Inside, high ceilings and expansive glass walls invite natural light and lush greenery, fostering tranquility. Warm materials like wood flooring and stone accents add texture to the sleek design. A central courtyard serves as a calming focal point, visible from multiple rooms. Designed for versatility, the home adapts to diverse lifestyles, embodying thoughtful and enduring modern architecture.

Jane Rodrigues, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP BD+C Dynamik Design Atlanta, GA Jane Rodrigues is a licenced Architect with a professional career spanning 22 years. She holds a Bachelors in Architecture and a Masters in Architecture. She is currently employed at Dynamik Design as a Project Manager with a focus on residential multi-family & mixed-use. Jane serves as the Chair Elect of the AIA Georgia Christopher Kelly Leadership Development Program (CKLDP) and has in the past been a part of the jury for AIA Atlanta’s High School Design Competition and NOMA’s Project Pipeline.

Zachery Terry, Assoc AIA Emerging Professionals Director Atlanta, GA Zachery is an architectural designer currently serving on the AIA Atlanta Board of Directors. He earned his Bachelor of Architecture from Kennesaw State University in 2017 and served as Student Director on the AIA Georgia Executive Board.

Arti Verma is a licensed architect based in Georgia with over nine years of experience in the architecture and design industry.

Her expertise spans multifamily residential, mixed-use developments during her work experience in USA, as well as airports, and convention centers during her experice in India, where she has managed projects from conception through to completion.

Heather Potts Lang is an architect and educator working in the fields of affordable housing, ethical development, and social sustainability. She is the owner of Potts Lang Architects and a guest lecturer in the School of Architecture at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she was the recipient of the 2022 CIOS Award for Student Recognition of Excellence in Teaching. She is a graduate and past Advisory Committee member of the AIA Christopher Kelley Leadership Development Program’s Georgia chapter and a participant in the AIA/ Georgia Tech mentorship program, where she uses her work to advocate for accessible education and equity in the building professions.

MAST: Coastal Georgia’s Center for Regenerative Building Student: Hazen Soucy Location Brunswick, GA School: Savannah College of Art and Design Instructor: Alice Guess

Consisting of two major architectural and landscape components, the Mast and Basin work to connect the City of Brunswick with the natural ecological processes of the native saltmarsh. With each passing tide, the design utilizes a large basin and artificial oyster reefs to cleanse waters along the city’s polluted coastline. Assembled with reclaimed steel, the architecture hosts facilities that aid in community resilience through the recycling of disposed building materials. Locals work together to build community resiliency to protect their homes and local businesses in the face of a changing climate and rising sea level.

As the industrial giants of the past begin to leave, a vacuum is formed bringing with it economic decline. To alleviate this growing strife a solution must be reached that goes beyond the building envelope to become something more. Natura is more than a building, but a responsive member of the community that through its redefinition of what it means to manufacture brings Brunswick to the front lines of innovation as pioneers of a brighter tomorrow.

Hydroscape Student: Benjamin Cho Location: Asheville, NC School: Savannah College of Art and Design Instructor: Dan Brown Located in Asheville, North Carolina, Hydroscape is an environmental awareness and community center cantilevered over the French Broad River. Utilizing an HSS steel structure, the architecture spans the historic river, symbolizing sustainability and unity. Hydroscape’s mission is to promote water management and sustainability practices, empowering individuals and communities to embrace eco-conscious lifestyles.

This center includes labs, classrooms, research exhibits, study spaces, outdoor decks, river platforms, a stage for events, and an atrium. The integrated water filtration system treats and reuses water, eventually returning it to the environment. Hydroscape fosters education, community engagement, and environmental stewardship, inspiring a sustainable future.

This project envisions a flexible, three-dimensional community in Kapashera, blending living, working, and social spaces to revive neighborhood life. It addresses local issues through innovative architecture and community engagement, fostering social cohesion and economic growth. The co-living system offers adaptable living and working units based on users’ needs, budgets, and partnerships, with options to rent extra spaces. Designed to build a sense of belonging and identity, it offers affordable, vibrant living while encouraging new opportunities. This open-ended proposal accommodates future advancements and serves as a potential prototype for the entire village.

Urban Legacy

Preserving Cultural Continuity in Land Scarce Singapore Student: Denzyl Zhang Location: Singapore, Singapore School: Savannah College of Art and Design Instructor: Aaron Wilner, Andrea Bertassi, David Gobel

This thesis reimagines memorial spaces in Singapore’s urban parks, addressing land scarcity while preserving cultural continuity. This 37-story columbarium integrates nature, architecture, and the grieving process, guiding visitors through acceptance, remembrance, and healing. The design balances permanence and transience, private grief and communal healing, creating a transformative experience within the city’s landscape. Through sustainable strategies and inclusive design, it reclaims space for the departed within everyday life, setting a precedent for urban memorialization. This Sanctuary of Passage is not just a place of mourning—it is a beacon of memory, resilience, and renewal.

The Seed

A New Farming System That Bridges Urban And Rural Areas Student: Ziheng Li Location: Chengdu, Sichuan, China School: Savannah College of Art and Design Instructor: Aaron Wilner

This project sits at the urban-rural intersection, creating a buffer that connects the countryside with the city while retaining rural populations.

The “Seed” concept, composed of adaptable 8m x 8m modular units, integrates vertical and traditional farming, forming courtyards and streets that foster community interaction. Dye workshops and factories provide space for local crafts and additional income for farmers. Glass farming modules maximize light transmission and allow multifunctional use. Solar tiles replace traditional roofing, reinforcing sustainability without compromising aesthetics. The project blends modern and traditional elements, ensuring a dynamic, self-sustaining environment that preserves agricultural heritage while embracing innovation.

Chris has led these efforts for a wide range of project types, including public sector municipal facilities, corporate and commercial developments, museums, athletic facilities, educational institutions, and multi-family housing. Project sizes have ranged from $100,000 to $1.6 billion.

Liane Brock is a partner and principal architect at Wiregrass Studio, Inc. in Brunswick, GA. With her partner, Nathan Brock, the firm’s focus is mainly on custom residential, small commercial, and historic rehabilitation. She is the current president of the Golden Isles Chapter of AIA and was past president in 2021. Liane grew up in Alaska and received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture from the University of Virginia and her master’s in architecture from the Georgia Institute of Technology.

​ onica Magcalas, LEED GA, is a M design professional at Gensler. Based in Atlanta, she brings expertise in sustainable design practices.

Monica earned her degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, where she developed a strong foundation in architecture and design. Her professional focus includes integrating environmentally responsible solutions into innovative design projects. She is passionate about creating spaces that are both impactful and inclusive, reflecting the diverse communities they serve.

Sophia Tarkhan, AIA Principal |Cooper Carry Atlanta, GA As Principal of Cooper Carry’s K-12 Education studio, Sophia brings two decades of experience in architecture and construction management. A strong advocate for diversity, she helped launch the firm’s Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Council and led NOMA Atlanta as its 2017 President. She’s a registered architect, LEED AP, and a member of AIA’s inaugural Next to Lead cohort. Her notable work includes the awardwinning Midtown High School renovation and two STEM schools for Fulton County.

EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR

Robin Z. Puttock AIA The Educator of the Year Award is bestowed upon any educator, faculty member, administrator, or staff person who has furthered the objectives of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in the role of educating and supporting the next generation of architects. The Institute works to advance our nation’s quality of life.

Robin Z. Puttock, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, WELL AP is a practicing architect with over 20 years of award-winning sustainable design experience and eight years in academic teaching, research, and leadership. She is an Assistant Professor at Kennesaw State University and has held previous roles at the University of Maryland and The Catholic University of America. Robin is editor of Teaching Carbon-Neutral Design in North America (Routledge, 2025) and faculty sponsor of multiple AIA/ACSA COTE student award winners. She has co-authored publications, co-chaired a multi-university climate justice symposium, and secured significant research and teaching grants. As project architect, she led the design of 11 LEED-certified buildings, including the first U.S. Department of Education Green Ribbon School. Robin currently serves as the 2025 Chair of the National AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE).

She is widely recognized for her leadership in climate-conscious architectural education and interdisciplinary collaboration. Her work bridges practice and academia to prepare the next generation of architects to lead with sustainability and equity.

Shelly-Anne Tulia Scott, AIA, NOMA The Carmen Stan Award is betsowed upon Individual AIA or Associate AIA members who have contributed to the success of an AIA Georgia, NOMA Atlanta, or an AIA local chapter/section sponsored endeavor, including but not limited to programs, committees, task forces, conferences, etc.

Tulia Scott, AIA, NCARB, NOMA, LEED AP BD+C is a dedicated architect with over 20 years of experience in Atlanta, known for her excellence in design and strong advocacy for equity in the profession. She is a recipient of the Dorothy Spence Helping Hand Award and has contributed to key initiatives with AIA Atlanta, AIA Georgia, and NOMA Atlanta, where she served as president.

Tulia actively mentors emerging professionals through AIA and NOMA and has led efforts like the NOMA Pipeline Summer Camp and equity-focused events on housing and inclusion. She has helped expand partnerships between architecture organizations and allied groups to elevate diverse voices in the profession. Tulia also played a key role in organizing impactful programming during the AIA National Convention and continues to serve as a leader in community-focused design.

Her passion for justice, diversity, and belonging makes her a true embodiment of the values honored by the Carmen Stan AIA Elevation of the Profession Award.

Darral Tate, AIA, NOMA The Emerging Architect Award is given to individual AIA or Associate AIA members whose initial date of licensure in any US jurisdiction is less than 10 years and not more than 15 years after graduation) residing and licensed to practice architecture in Georgia. They are honored based on their contributions to the advancement of architectural design and design discourse through leadership in AIA at any level, community work, and/or mentorship.

Darral Tate, Assoc. AIA, NOMA is an emerging leader in the architecture profession whose work is grounded in advocacy, equity, and meaningful mentorship. Based in Atlanta, Darral has demonstrated exceptional commitment to advancing the profession through his leadership within the American Institute of Architects. He currently serves as the 2025 Chair of the National Associates Committee, following roles as the 2023 Associate Representative to the AIA Board of Directors and a 2022 Strategic Council Member.

At SLAM Collaborative, Darral co-founded the firm’s first DEI group, representing the Atlanta office as a DEI Ambassador. He is also deeply involved in local efforts to mentor and inspire future architects through his work with SPIKE Studio and the Kennesaw State University NOMAS Chapter. A recipient of a 2023 AIA Georgia Presidential Citation, Darral continues to serve as a tireless advocate for emerging professionals on their path to licensure.

HOK - Atlanta The Architecture Firm of the Year award is given to any firm located in Georgia, or the Georgia office of a firm with multiple locations, in which the continuing collaboration among individuals of the firm, or successor firm, has resulted in the consistent producing of distinguished architecture and professionalism for a period of at least 10 years from the Georgia office, the firm should provide for the nurturing and mentoring of next generation architects and the community in which it practices shall know the firm for its contributions.

Mark Levine, FAIA Vice President & Principal | LS3P Atlanta, GA Mark Levine serves as LS3P’s Atlanta Office Leader and brings over 36 years of expertise in educational design. His career includes leadership roles such as Education Practice Leader, Design Director, and Senior Architect across firms in Georgia, Michigan, and New Mexico.

A graduate of the University of New Mexico, Mark is a past president of AIA Georgia and currently serves on the National Board of Directors for the American Institute of Architects.

His award-winning portfolio spans K-12, higher education, and civic work, with projects on more than 14 campuses across the Southeast.

Cheryl McAfee , FAIA CEO | McAfee3 Architects Atlanta, GA Cheryl McAfee, FAIA, is a nationally recognized architect and CEO of McAfee3, with offices in Atlanta, Dallas, and Wichita. A trailblazer for diversity in design, she has led major projects including the South Fulton Library, the expansion of Hartsfield–Jackson Airport, and the 1996 Olympic Games. Cheryl was the first African-American woman licensed in Kansas and the first woman elected president of NOMA. Her firm is the only in AIA history led by a father and two daughters who are all Fellows. With nearly 40 years of leadership, Cheryl continues to inspire the next generation of architects.

A former Chair of the Department of Architecture at Harvard’s Graduate School of Design, he is also a respected educator and lecturer. BERNARD B. ROTHSCHILD FAIA AWARD

Oscar Harris, FAIA The Rothschild Award is the highest honor that AIA Georgia can bestow on an individual, alive or deceased. This award is in honor of Bernard B. Rothschild FAIA who served the profession at many levels through his leadership and active participation throughout his career. The award is given in recognition of the most distinguished service to the profession of architecture in the state of Georgia by an architect who exemplifies the principles of the craft.

Oscar Harris, FAIA, is one of the most influential civic architects in Georgia and a visionary whose impact extends across the United States.

Through his leadership of Turner Associates Architects and Planners, he helped shape the architectural identity of Atlanta with landmark projects like the Atlanta Airport Atrium, the legendary Centennial Olympic Park, and the Martin Luther King Jr. Visitors Center. Over more than five decades, his work has elevated the public realm while opening doors for underrepresented voices in the profession. His commitment to mentorship, community-centered design, and the advancement of Black architects has left a lasting imprint on the field. Oscar Harris’s dedication and contributions have far exceeded the standard and firmly established his legacy in the profession. He continues to be honored not only for his built work, but also for the generations of architects he has inspired.
