Managing the Hospital-Foundation Relationship 10:15 am–4:30 pm In 2006, the AHP Journal article “In Search of a Best Practice Model for the Hospital/Foundation Relationship” was the first comprehensive piece published in health care philanthropy literature to explore the unique relationship between hospitals and their foundations. Promoted by the appearance of documented cases of legal conflict between hospitals and foundations, and drawing on wisdom and experience from the field, the article espoused a best practice model reflective of a high-functioning, synergistic relationship between hospital and foundation in the shared mission of philanthropy.

Since 2006, the issue of the hospital/foundation relationship has become of even greater concern to development leaders. In 2010, a national survey of Canadian hospital foundations by KCI asked leaders to define the top ten issues of concern; the number one issued identified was “relationship with the hospital”. Why is the hospital/foundation relationship now of emerging concern for hospital foundation leaders? What are the factors present in the relationship and/or the environment that have given rise to this concern? How does the health of the relationship impact philanthropic outcomes?

This session will examine issues inherent in the hospital/ foundation relationship, strategies to build (or rebuild) the relationship, elements deemed essential to a high-functioning relationship between the two, and how best to set and manage expectations for both parties.

Grateful Patient Program Honours Health Care Heroes

What Keeps You Up at Night?

This session will introduce you to a new program launched by a medium sized hospital in New Brunswick as an alternative to patient mailings. New Brunswick is one of several provinces across Canada that do not have access to patient names. This program provides an opportunity for patients and their families to show appreciation for the outstanding care that they or a loved one has received during their hospital visit, by making a donation in their health care hero’s honour.

Those recognized are informed by the foundation of the gift that was made in their honour and presented with a special “HERO” pin and certificate which has not only boosted donations but staff morale as well! Registration Fees ■

Development Professional Registration–The lowest registration fees are available to development professionals who are actively working for a hospital, hospice, foundation or other health care development organization. These fees are not available to consultants.

■ Sponsorship/Exhibitor Registration–If you are a consultant

or vendor please consider exhibiting or sponsoring at the conference. Organizations do not need to submit the attached registration form. To sponsor/exhibit at this conference, please download the AHP Canada Sponsor/Exhibit prospectus at www.ahp.org or call 703-532-6243.

Cancellations Registration cancellations will not be accepted by phone. All registration cancellation requests must be submitted in writing to ICS at AHP-registration@icsevents.com and received by Thursday, April 5, 2012. AHP will refund registration Fees, less a $100 administration fee for full registration and less a $50 fee for the AHP Primer and other Pre-conference Sessions and Single Day registrations including, the Executive Forum. Refunds will not be issued until after the conference. Cancellations after Friday, April 20, 2012 are 100% nonrefundable. Partial or full fees that have been forfeited cannot be applied to subsequent conferences.
