PRESIDENTS LETTER

Get ready for an unforgettable summer at the Arlington Heights Park District! There is so much fun to be had and on behalf of the Park Board of Commissioners, we are excited to see so many of you at our pools, special events, playgrounds and so much more!

Earlier this year, AHPD received two grants for the Recreation Park Project! The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) announced that the Arlington Heights Park District has been selected as one of the 12 recipients for the Park and Recreational Facility Construction Act (PARC) grant! The grant, totaling $2.8 million, will be allocated towards enhancements at the Recreation Park facility including improved accessibility, while preserving the original façade of a well-loved WPA building. The project also will complete removal of the current 50-meter swimming pool and subsequent replacement with a new 50-meter swimming pool, along with updates to the children's aquatic area and additional accessible green space for pool users.

AHPD has also been awarded a second $600,000 OSLAD Grant for Phase II of the Recreation Park Project. Phase II includes improvements to the ballfield, basketball court and pathways as well as additions of various table games and a shelter. AHPD received the first $600,000 OSLAD Grant in March of 2023 for Phase I. This brings our grant total, for the three grants we have been awarded for this property, to $4M. Thank you to Governor Pritzker, our legislators and the IDNR for their efforts in securing funding to create a vibrant, inclusive space where families, friends and neighbors can come together to PLAY. We’d also like to thank our residents for their enormous amount of community support. Learn more about these exciting projects and stay up to date on the progress at ahpd.org.

Our summer calendar is filled with a wide range of special events and programs! Additional details regarding these events can be found in the upcoming pages but I would like to highlight a few noteworthy examples. "Movies and More at The Course" on July 19 will feature Happy Gilmore, and in August, the Arlington Heights Historical Museum will host a weekend of entertainment, including the highly anticipated Irish Fest, Heritage Fest and BBQ, Bands, and Brews.

I am pleased to announce that AHPD will be launching a series of pop-up events throughout the summer, Plan to Play Every Day! The dates, times, and activities for these events will vary but we hope you’re prepared to visit parks and facilities all over the District!

As always, we look forward to seeing you in the parks, on the golf courses, in the tennis clubs, recreation centers, museum, playgrounds and ballfields…where the fun happens in Arlington Heights!

Sincerely,

The

Our Park District Commissioners

Arlington Heights Park District is governed by a Board of elected officials. The Board meets on Tuesdays at the Administration Center. Meetings begin at 6:30PM. Residents are able to attend. Visit ahpd.org for the board meeting schedule.

REGISTRATION

First Time Registering?

Park District staff are here to help! Park District residents must come, in person, to either Administration Center, Camelot, Pioneer Community Centers or the Arlington Ridge Center during registration hours and provide proof of residency for all minors and household members being added to the account.

Park district non-residents do not need to show proof of residency and may either create an account in person at one of the above locations or call 847.577.3000 and ask staff to create a household account over the phone. Regardless of residency status, new account holders must provide a name, address, email, phone number, and date of your birth to set up an account.

Account Creation Information

The following forms of identification will be accepted to prove residency:

1. Each adult on the profile must provide either a driver’s license or state ID with current address OR two of the following: utility bill(s), no older than 60 days, voter registration card, or a vehicle registration card listing name and household address.

2. For children who do not have a driver’s license or state ID, provide a current report card, school picture ID, birth certificate, parent insurance card listing dependents, or other form of ID a parent may have that prove guardianship or that the children reside at that address.

If the activity is full, what happens?

Registration must be completed in order to be placed on a wait list. We do not charge you to register for a wait list spot and will contact you if a space opens for that activity or additional activities are added. Please be sure payment information is accurate and saved to your household account as we require payment to transfer from the wait list into an activity. Please note: we recommend that, if possible, you register for a secondary activity option with openings.

Inperson and mail-in registrants must sign the waiver on the registration form. Online registrants must agree to all waivers when checking out.

• Patrons may not participate in programs if the waiver is not signed and refunds will not be granted.

Refund Policy

Refund requests must be submitted online, and refunds will NOT be issued once a program has ended. All refunds are subject to a $5 administration service fee except under the following circumstances:

• A request due to dissatisfaction that is approved by the program supervisor

• Refunds initiated by the Park District

• A request due to medical issues submitted with a doctor’s note

• Request to refund a particular date within a program that falls on a date that the resident honors as a religious holiday. Participants may either make up the missed class, if space exists, or have the fee pro-rated to reflect the missed date. The program supervisor can assist you with either option.

If you need a special accommodation to participate in any Park District function, please provide details in the Special Accommodation section on the registration form, in the Special Needs inquiry during online registration, or contact Brian Meyer, Director of Recreation and Facilities, at BMeyer@ahpd.org.

Safety Town

Experience peace of mind knowing that your child will learn invaluable information about all types of safety through this program. This early safety educational program designed to introduce safety techniques to young children through participation. Children learn the rules of home, school and outdoor safety through a variety of activities, videos, songs and guest speakers. They also learn about traffic, bicycle and pedestrian safety by driving trikes through Safety Town, a miniature village set up outside. The park district provides the trikes, which accommodate children of various heights and weights. Participants should bring a helmet and water bottle to class each day. (KW)

Summer is ending and kids will soon be headed back to school. As you stock up on the school supplies, don’t forget self-esteem and leadership! While building these skills is a lifelong journey, this workshop is a great kick-off. Everyone is good at something, we just have to roll up our sleeves and figure it out. Through wacky dramatizations and experiences, kids will have the chance to cultivate self-worth and will not even realize they are working on it! Interactive games include: Resilient Rubber bands, Splat Ball Scatter, Lollipop Marathon, King’s Throne, Balloon Bust, Whirling Confetti Storm, Money Mania, Compliment Café, and more! Kid’s emotional “buckets” will get filled and will likely be overflowing with confidence when they depart this class. (EO)

It’s been a long school year–let’s get laughing! Humor really can make the world a better place. Through close observation and lab experimentation, this high-energy comedy class offers electrifying lessons on humor, such as impersonations, healthy gag humor, slapstick, comic strips, improv, character voices, ventriloquism, and witty situational. Whether your child is naturally funny or not, they have the opportunity to develop and execute comedic skills, gain a higher sense of selfesteem and perhaps learn to use humor in a social setting to be friendlier. They will also understand when comedy is taken TOO far in life. In a world immersed in technology where everyone is looking down at a phone or tablet, children could benefit from a healthy dose of interaction and comedy! • Staff will follow rules established by the State of Illinois when determining how long the pool needs to be closed after a sanitation maintenance

• Mechanical problems

Summer swim lessons have several conflict dates for various reasons. All of the fees are calculated taking these conflict dates into consideration.

• There are no swim lessons on July 4 or July 29 due to a holiday and the Interpark Swim Meet.

• Due to swim meet conflicts, some specific dates may not have swim lessons. Please see your online class notes and receipt to verify.

SWIM LESSONS

NEW for Summer 2024–there are TWO options:

Option #1: PUNCH CARD

Drop in to the following classes:

We're excited to pilot a punch card option! A limited quantity of the punch cards will be available for purchase. If you’re one of the first to pay for a punch card–the Water Babies class you attend will be determined by…your baby!! We understand that committing to sessions with specific class dates is not ideal for you and your baby when you’re also navigating a new adventure with your little one. This allows you to attend any class listed on the schedule, last minute. There are only a limited number of punch cards being sold for participants who want to “drop-in” to any class on the schedule. If the punch cards are sold out, you can still reserve a spot in class (see below). However, you won’t have the flexibility to attend any class on the schedule other than the class you’re registered for.

Pilot Punch Card—How it works:

• Sign up with the class code below to purchase your punch pass.

• On the first class you decide to attend you will pick up your punch pass with the Recreation Pool cashier.

• Each time you come to class our cashier at Recreation Pool will punch one hole for your baby. No holes are punched for parents.

• You can use your punch card at any class on the schedule.

• Take one class a week–or take 4 classes in one week–it’s up to you (or your baby).

• Text a neighbor or friend–drop in last minute together then picnic in the playground after class!

WATER BABIES PUNCH CARD OPTIONS

One hole will be punched for each child. Holes are not punched for parents. No refunds for unused punches.

All punch cards valid for our summer 2024 swim lesson season. Unused punches can not be carried over to future park district programming seasons.

Use your punch card at any of these classes. All classes at Recreation Pool. Rain or Shine. Only people who buy a punch card can "drop-in" with no reservation.

Option #2

Sign up for specific session(s) how you have in the past, and how we operate Swim School and Junior Swim School. Session class codes are on the following pages on the grids.

Structure of Class:

Parent(s) in water with child.

Introduce your baby to a body of water bigger than the kitchen sink or bathtub! Everyone begins class together with an opening song. Instructor will divide class in half based on age and size of baby, if needed. Instructor introduces/demos a skill for each group. Parents work on skills and the instructor will move about class and offer tips/corrections to parents. We will come together as one group for songs several times in class. These classes are very popular and always a great way to meet new pool buddies in your neighborhood. Crying and screaming is perfectly normal and welcome! This class is the perfect opportunity to familiarize your baby with the pool before your first family open swim or vacation.

Depending on age and size, swimmers will work on:

• how to hold your baby in water for each skill

• floats

• kicks

• underwater exposure (if desired)

• “jump” in from sitting (for our older babies)

• blowing bubbles

• bobs

• toys provided

2-1/2 – 5 years - Junior Swim School

No parent in water. 30 min. For most – it’s the first time a child enters a pool without a parent so we begin by making your child feel comfortable. This may look like simply focusing on getting the face and hair wet at first, which can be scary for some. Then progressing through supported floats, bobs, kick board use, and eventually swimming 3 yards with no assistance under water. Last five minutes of class – our instructors play a game. NO GOGGLES PLEASE. Scan QR code at the bottom of this page to learn more.

5-9yrs – Swim School

40 min. – NEW! Swim School is 10 minutes longer than summer 2023. More time for repetition. “Swimming is a lifelong skill. Repetition is critical for success.” A 40-minute class will also increase and promote positive conditioning of your child’s endurance for other sports and activities outside of the pool.

Swim School is a group environment to motivate your child. Our first level begins with correct face and body position, floats, and opening eyes underwater without goggles. Your child will then progress through levels where all the swim strokes are introduced and eventually work towards treading in deep water (an essential life skill), dives, and flip turns (if desired). The instructor typically plays a game using swim school skills or we have fun jumping off the diving boards for the last 5 minutes. Regarding diving boards: Swim School is the perfect time for your child to push past any fears they may have going of the diving board for the first time. We have an instructor in the water to boost confidence. This is an amenity not possible during open swim.

Before your child’s first swimming lesson please review the following by scanning the QR code on this page to learn more.

• Refund policy

• Make-up policy

• Swim Lessons Code of Conduct (for everyone’s safety in the water)

• Why we strongly suggest no goggles for beginner swimmers

Pop-Up Private Swim Lessons

• An à la carte experience

All Ages

• Designed so you can pick a specific teacher to make your child feel comfortable. Or maybe you have a favorite teacher (an amenity not possible with group swim lessons).

• Perfect for the young child who does not like a group environment for swim lessons.

• 30-minute swim lesson with private oneon-one attention. Accomplish a lot without the distraction of other kids in a group.

• Tell your instructor what you want to work on–or if you’re not sure, we will come up with a plan together. Some people sign their kids up with one goal in mind such as: eliminating fear water, going off diving board for the first time, or swim team strokes/skills/endurance/breathing tips.

• Great compliment to Interpark Swim Team!

• Parents–put your name on the list for class code 79551 if you’re interested. We will email everyone who signs up for that code when instructors’ schedules begin to POP-UP on our registration portal.

• Residents | $45

• Non-Residents | $68

• Semi-private options available for siblings. Call Angela for details at 847.577.3029

SOCCER AT AHPD

Arlington Aces House Soccer League

Arlington Aces House Soccer League is a recreational league for players in grades K-6. Boys and girls play in separate divisions in 1st through 6th grade (grades and/or genders may combine depending on registration numbers). Kindergarten division is co-ed. Players are placed on teams based out of the park they choose when registering and are allowed one reciprocal friend request. Players may not request coaches or more than one friend, and may not make circular friend requests. Practice locations, days, and times are determined AFTER registration closes on August 4 and are based on the availability of volunteer parent coaches. You will receive your practice and game schedules from your coach after the pre-season coach meeting. The coaches meeting will take place the week of August 19. Games begin September 7 and conclude October 20. Based on number of teams, games may be played on both Saturday or Sundays. Practice and game locations may differ from the Community Center Park you register your child from. Registration deadline for Fall 2024 is Sunday, August 4. You may register online or in person at Camelot, Pioneer or Arlington Ridge Center. After August 4, you may contact the program supervisor to see if there is any open roster spots on teams. ADULT LEAGUES

The Park District offers adult leagues at a variety of competitive levels to accommodate players and teams with a range of recreational interests and abilities. All players must be 18 years or older.

Registration

One player registers an entire team and all fees are due at registration. Register for your preferred level and, if that level is full, register for the waitlist. Do NOT register for the wrong competitive level to get into a league. If you are a player looking to join a team, please contact the league supervisor.

Bracketing and Scheduling

Once registration closes, brackets and season schedules are created. Final brackets are determined by a variety of factors including, the number of teams registered and past season records.

• We try our best to evenly assign game time slots and cannot accommodate special schedule requests.

• Once schedules are finalized, we will email a schedule link, season information and team roster/waiver instructions to the captain.

Rosters and Waivers

Your team roster also serves as the individual waiver for all players and a new roster with all players’ signatures must be submitted before the start of your first game EVERY season.

Adult Basketball Leagues

Games are played on Thursday evenings. Each team will play 7 regular season games, followed by a single elimination playoff based on regular season standings. Awards are paid out to the winners of the regular season and playoffs.

Please note: If we have an uneven number of teams registered, teams may be required to play more than one game in a night.

For more information about programs on this page contact Nick Wirth, Athletic Manager, at nwirth@ahpd.org.

Long Grove’s Quiet Hero: The Other Story Hiding in Plain Site in the Muller House Parlor

Hanging in the parlor of the Muller house at the Arlington Heights Historical Museum is an ornate framed document. It was only noted in previous iterations of the museum’s interpretive manual as one of “two patriotic prints” in this room. However, this certificate tells a much more interesting and involved story. It is worth a deeper look come learn about Charles Bollenbach and his experience as a solider in the Civil War.

F.W. “Pop” Muller first delivered his soda along the dirt roads of Chicago’s Northwest Suburbs in 1872. For over 120 years the Arlington Club Beverage company sold their unique refreshments around Illinois.

Today, we continue this tradition as Muller’s original soda factory is a part of the Arlington Heights Historical Museum, a cooperative e ort of the Historical Society, Park District and Village in Arlington Heights, Illinois. All proceeds benefit the Arlington Heights Historical Museum.
