LIBRARY FEBRUARY 2019

adding value in your life

Get imaginative with our newest interactive exhibit Visit Chagall for Children, the library’s latest exhibit that provides an unforgettable way for children and families to experience the artwork of Marc Chagall. Chagall for Children features 14 interactive components throughout Kids’ World that provide a fun and imaginative way to learn about the art of Chagall and his life through hands-on activities. From creating mosaics to weaving tapestries to using touch screens to digitally alter Chagall’s masterpieces, there are plenty of ways to experience and appreciate art in this exhibit.

for

children

For many Chicagoans, Chagall is known for his stained-glass art, America Windows, which is one of the most beloved treasures in the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection. Chagall is one of the most celebrated painters and stained glass artists of the 20th century, known for incorporating personal narrative, dreamlike imagery and whimsical expressions into his modernist artwork. Chagall for Children is open now through April 7. Play engagement

January 26-April 7 in Kids' World volunteers will be in Kids’ World, guiding activities. Look for

volunteers wearing a Chagall button and nametag if you need assistance. Sensory-friendly device kits are available by request – ask Kids’ World staff for more details. Sensory-friendly exhibit hours are also planned in February – see page 4 for more information.

DEAR

Let the library help you grow your family tree

READER

Have you ever wondered who your ancestors were? Do you think you know the story, but want to find out more? All you need is curiosity and the willingness to learn. In my research, I’ve learned the fascinating details of my second great grandfather’s life. William Frentz was born the day of the Great Chicago Fire in Germany and immigrated to the United States on the SS Strassburg when he was 10 years old with his parents and baby brother. The family settled in Chicago and later moved to Blue Island, Illinois. He and his wife, Annie, had 12 children. Annie died in 1918 from the Spanish Influenza. With genealogy resources at the Arlington Heights Memorial Library, I can fill in the details of the Frentz’s lives. I’ve found the passenger list documenting the Frentz’s arrival into the United States, a photo of the SS Strassburg in one of our books, census records showing additions of Frentz children, newspaper articles detailing the family’s social activities and an obituary for Annie.

Our genealogy volunteers each have different areas of expertise. Former volunteers Fran Boyd and Joan Huff focused on local history and were key in establishing an Arlington Heights local history collection within the Shackley Room. Now the library is honoring the memory of Boyd and Huff by sending their work to be bound into hardcover books, digitizing The Arlington Day newspaper and renaming our local history area the Boyd-Huff Arlington Heights Collection.

In the library’s Shackley Room on the first floor, you too can discover your family’s story. Browse through our collection of genealogy books, maps, periodicals, microfilmed newspapers and our extensive databases. Drop in on our new Genealogy Discussion to chat about your current research project and find ways to break down your genealogical brick walls. Turn to page 18 for upcoming programs.

Next time you stop by the library, I welcome you to visit the Boyd-Huff Arlington Heights Collection and tell me who your favorite ancestor to research is. Volunteers and library staff are available to help you with your research. Complete an appointment form at ahml.info/ research/genealogy or contact me at 847-870-3643.

Library considers adding makerspace

Village, library discussing use of original Belmont library location

The Arlington Heights Memorial Library is considering the acquisition of 112 S. Belmont Ave. for use as a library makerspace. The property is currently owned by The Village of Arlington Heights. An informational meeting with officials from the library and village about the proposal is scheduled for Wednesday, February 6, 6:30 p.m., at Village Hall (Buechner Room), 33 S. Arlington Heights Road. The meeting will provide residents the opportunity to learn more about the proposed project, ask questions and provide feedback.

a space for making

Built in 1952, this 8,000 square foot building was the first standalone library in Arlington Heights. Given the library’s history with the building, and the desire to add a makerspace as noted in the library’s 2019-2022 strategic plan, the library is considering the location to house a makerspace that would offer opportunities to all ages for hands-on experiential STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) learning. Makerspaces typically offer tools such as laser cutters, 3D printers, embroidery, quilting and sewing machines, and computers for coding and programming small robots. Other communities with library makerspaces include Wheeling, Elk Grove, Northbrook, Barrington, Elmhurst, Naperville, Winnetka, Lake Zurich, Aurora, Algonquin and Grayslake.

Our newest collection, the Library of Things, is full of the unexpected – from board games and guitar pedals to a sewing machine and wireless hotspots. The library has received many requests for non-traditional items in recent years, and this new collection allows customers even more ways to learn, create and save money at the library.

• Capture your next snowboarding or

snorkeling expedition with a GoPro. Beachcomb on Lake Michigan with a metal detector. Race your visiting cousin in Mario Kart with an extra Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Play new games like Code Names, Truth Bombs or Settlers of Catan. Keep your blades from dulling with a knife sharpener. And so much more!

• • • • •

The Library of Things will continue to grow based on your feedback. Visit the display in the first floor Marketplace or go to ahml.info/LoT to browse the collection and suggest items for the library to add.

Readiness

Whether you’re starting your first job search or are re-entering the

market after years away, it’s important to be ready, not just with resumes and cover letters, but also with basic interview skills and experience with the most popular productivity software. The library offers a new self-directed “Path to Career Readiness” program which combines in-library classes and online learning tools to help jobseekers put their best foot forward. Over several weeks, you’ll earn online “badges” as you build a resume, learn about local networking options, research local employers, improve your interview skills and become fluent in Word, Excel and PowerPoint. The Path to Career Readiness was developed with input from the Village of Arlington Heights Human Resources Department and the North Suburban Cook County American Job Center. Get started at ahml.info/careerpath.
