Democracy in America: A Novel is a high-stakes political mystery set in the context of the 1980 New Hampshire presidential primary. It is written as a campaign memoir. The first-person narrator, who becomes a principal investigator, describes in candid detail the national political scene for the twelve months leading-up to Town Meeting Day, February 26, 1980, when the good folks of New Hampshire cast their ballots and confirmed the outcome of the story. The pivotal character of the story is based upon the persona of William Loeb, longtime conservative publisher of the Manchester Union-Leader. When, during Labor Day Weekend, 1979, a dam breaks above a Wyoming resort community and flooding kills nearly 250 people, the publisher suspects that a leading liberal presidential contender, who had been governor of Wyoming, might bear some blame for the disaster. On the basis of this suspicion, the publisher launches an investigation that becomes the principal plotline of the story.The narrator of the novel is a Washington, D.C., political columnist who had risen to prominence as a writer of the 1960s counterculture. He has been assigned by his D.C. editor to keep tabs on the New Hampshire publisher and, thereby, comes to play a central role in resolving the mystery.
