OR HOW I LEARNED TO WORRY AND STOP TRUSTING SUITS

Fall 2023 - Fifth Year Option Studio Faculty Advisor: Mitchell DeJarnett In collaboration with Amy Pagaria Software: Rhino, Adobe CS, Procreate

Soft City is a critical architectural response to the issues of water conservation, negotiation, and redistribution in the South Western United States.

Proposed to house Western Water, a governing body hosting secretariat and conference offices from states bordering the Colorado River, Soft City exists as a space for the privatized negotiation of a public good. Sited adjacent to Los Angeles City Hall in DTLA, the inherent social signifiacance of water conservation is further amplified by the project’s siting within such a politically loaded environment.

In response to the moral quandries posed by the project brief, Soft City rejects the question of “What happens when we run out of water?” and instead postulates that the public right to water and social sustenance is and has been existing under the debaucharous doctrine of big government, and mirrors the crushing burden that systemic authority has imprinted upon the common American.

The formal strategy of the project is influenced primarily by a rigid separation between the public and private program. The “Soft City” of the two towers houses office space and support programs, with the shorter tower hosting secretariat offices, conference rooms, and an archive library while the taller tower entirely hosts leasable office space that would be rented out to offset operating costs.

The “Hard City”; or the public programming consisting of a lobby, lounge space, education center, and a water-filtration demonstration landscape is characterized completely in contrast to the rigid form of the towers above. Where the towers are slim, oppressive, and entirely enclosed, the groundwork of the Hard City is open, explorable, and creates a space for the thoughtful, albeit challenging, consideration of the problematic at hand.

Model on Site

The choice to cast the constructed landscape and connected programs in a dry, bleak, plaster reflects the current state of the water crisis in the United States and the world today.

The free and public shared resource has become unwelcoming and tarnished by the grasp of bureaucracy, as depicted in the imprint of the towers’ grid upon the land.

The dystopian and almost monotonous facade treatment is symbolic of the air of modernism often applied to political architecture within the Downtown district, ironically painting the powers that be as a highest and most prudent source of influence.

GATEWAY GLENDALE Fall 2022 - Fourth Year Option Studio Faculty Advisor: Sarah Lorenzen In collaboration with Amy Pagaria Software: Rhino, Adobe CS, Procreate

Gateway Glendale is a proposal for an educational building housing arts & tech programs and located on the campus of Glendale Community College; a site nestled between the Verdugo mountains and the suburban city of Glendale.

Aiming to juxtapose the opaque character of the campus, the project’s composition as four separate-yet-connected translucent volumes expresses a sensitivty to the site. The exterior infrastructure connecting the volumes is reminiscient of scaffolding, with it’s long outdoor paths and bridges creating opportunities for observation to and from the campus.

The project is sited at the very edge of the campus with it’s eastern side meeting an adajacent sloping hillside, enforcing the prescription of rotated volumes spilling out onto the site at the gateway between the hills and campus.

A principal organizational strategy utilized throughout the design process was the integration of a functional core and public platform dug into the adjacent hillside. This strategy located all required office and mechanical program within a shared zone while freeing up open space within the project footprint and allowing for greater flexibility in the spatial negotiation of the volumes, which would house all neccesary learning space and classrooms.

The shared public platform is dug into the adjacent hill and is accessed by stair through the ground floor, arriving at a double-height gateway that acts as a point of orientation for students and visitors alike.

Material strategies for the project involved utilizing a translucent cladding for the volumes, each of which would contain a number of academic program classrooms or learning spaces. In combination with the ample open space provided through the scaffolding-like interstitial circulation, this palette would re-enforce the concept of a public and shared academic building where peers and the act of being educated is always a glance away.

SILVER LAKE SUPPORTIVE Spring 2021 - Third Year Core Studio Faculty Advisor: Roberto Sheinberg Individual Project Software: Revit, Rhino, Adobe CS, Vray, Lumion

Located at the bustling intersection of silver lake boulevard and effie street in los angeles, Silver Lake Supportive is a proposal for a permanent supportive cousing complex to assist previously unhoused Angelino’s in their process of re-integration.

The design of the building is centered around the privacy needs of the residents and characterized by a staggered form with volumes that step up and away from the sidewalk on the ground floor, resulting in ample outdoor deck space on the residential floors to heighten a sense of community within the building.

Taking advantage of it’s location in one of Los Angeles’ prime neighborhoods, the ground floor of this mixed use building houses a boutique retail program which trains and hires residents from within and exists as a tool to re-integrate it’s population.

Also present on the ground floor are a job center and a case management office, re-enforcing an environment dedicated to future successes of all residents.

Given the more at-risk history of residents, creating spatial conditions catered to respecting privacy needs became of great importance. With this in mind, the face of each program on the ground floor is pushed away from the sidewalk in accordance with it’s public or private occupancy. This prelimenary shifting helped identify a shared community room on the building’s second floor, responding to the site condition of the intersecting streets and influencing a shifting of residential units away from a public vicinity.

Residential units stacks are moved away from the primary public road and the connecting floorplates are then manuevered in such a way to allow for ample shared deck space between floors; creating an environment that dignifies each resident with their own private unit while creating space for community to flourish.

Perspective View

The employed material palette intends to represent the city of Los Angeles through it’s use of green, red, and yellow. Individual units are each accompanied with a two-foot deep painted alcove at the front door entryway, breaking up flatness within the facade and allowing for a space from which each resident of the unit may choose to leave identifying elements to further cement a neighborhood feel within the building.
