Setting Intentions A Path to Resolutions
By Jarred Wilson, Editor,
The Link Magazine, Nashville, TN
The New Year offers a natural opportunity for renewal — a symbolic reset that encourages both personal and professional growth. For business owners, it's more than just a simple calendar change. It's a time to refine your vision, elevate your client experience, and set actionable intentions that take your business to the next level. Setting clear and purposeful intentions helps you align your team, work towards goals, and enhance your brand’s impact.
Take Time to Reflect

clients", etc. It is the "how". Intentions differ from resolutions. lntention focuses on the mindset. It sets the tone for how you want to lead your business, serve your clients, and evolve professionally. Intentions guide your choices and allow you to stay rooted in times when the industry or market changes. They are the "what". In order to get to the "how", your "what" has to be clear, it has to be achievable, and it has to make sense for your business.
Using hair restoration as an exampleintentions may look like:
• Commit to staff education for products and techniques
if you remain stagnant. Action is needed for change to occur.
Thinking back to our previous intentions - how do we turn these examples into solid, measurable resolutions?
• Commit to staff education for products and techniques: Register yourself and your staff for the HairNow26 Conference in August.
• Elevate client experience with salon space/atmosphere and processes: Implement Afterpay beginning January 1, 2026 to offer stress-free, affordable, and flexible payment options for clients.
• Invest in personal development for leadership: Register for and attend Learning Leaders Summit in Orlando in February.
Before setting your intentions, it’s essential to make space for reflection. This allows you to acknowledge and dissect both your wins and your opportunities. A few things to think about when reflecting:
• Which services were most in demand or most requested?
• What feedback did you receive from your clients? Where were they satisfied and what constructive criticism did they offer?
• Did your marketing strategies reach your desired audience?
This reflective process isn’t about dwelling on shortcomings but understanding what worked, what didn’t, and where you need to direct your attention in the coming year. Staying aware of your strengths and weaknesses gives you a clearer starting point for meaningful intention setting.
Setting Clear and Realistic Intentions
A resolution is a fixed goal - "increase revenue by 15%", "gain twenty more
• Elevate client experience with salon space/atmosphere and processes
• Invest in personal development for leadership
• Offer additional add-on services and affordable options
These intentions can help define the spirit of your business, who you are and what your business stands for. Once these are set, you can then move forward with specific actions to bring this spirit to life in your business. It all starts with that shift in mindset and change in behavior.
Turning Intentions into Resolutions
Intentions become powerful when paired with consistent action. The common saying "insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results" is one you should constantly keep at the forefront of your mind. As a Behavior Change Specialist in the fitness industry, this is the first thing I tell my clients. Nothing will improve
• Offer additional add-on services and affordable options: Roll out new hair extension line and philanthropic services March 1, 2026.
Once you have decided what you want to achieve in the new year, you can start to take small, manageable steps that support each intention. Check in on occasion to see where you are, and make adjustments where necessary — and note that adjustments may need to happen in order for your intentions to become resolutions. This is not a sign of failure or impracticability. Embrace it, reevaluate, and shift if you need to.
A new year is more than a time stamp — it’s an invitation for growth and development. By approaching your business with intention and purpose, you open yourself to grow not only in revenue, but in reputation, expertise, and impact. Ultimately, that’s what sets successful businesses apart — a commitment to creating meaningful and memorable interactions and experiences for every client who walks through your doors.
Plants with Benefits
By Janine Farro, Administrator, AHLC
Let’s be honest: salons are busy, noisy, chemicalheavy spaces. Between blow dryers, music and conversations the last thing anyone needs is a dramatic houseplant demanding constant attention.

The good news? The right plants don’t add stress — they actually do the opposite.
Well-chosen greenery instantly softens a space, absorbs sound, and creates a calm, welcoming first impression. Clients may not consciously look at a Snake Plant and think ah yes, inner peace — but their nervous system absolutely notices. Plants signal care, balance, and intention. They say, You can relax here.
Even better: many plants quietly help filter the air, which is a major win in an environment filled with sprays, chemicals, and disinfectants.
The secret is choosing plants that thrive in salon life — not ones that belong in a
greenhouse or a Pinterest fantasy. This guide breaks down the best options by light level, care style, and visual impact — so your plants stay alive and your space stays beautiful.
Follow the Light, Not the Trend
Before you buy anything, observe your salon at different times of day. Light — not watering — is the single most important factor in plant success.
Low-Light Legends
For interior salons, back rooms, and corners that never see a window.
Snake Plant
The ultimate salon plant. Upright, modern, impossible to kill, and excellent at filtering air. Looks good in minimalist pots or bold planters.
ZZ Plant
Shiny, sculptural leaves that always look polished. Thrives on neglect and irregular watering — perfect for busy weeks.

Pothos (Trailing)
Softens shelves, mirrors, and color bars with trailing vines. Extremely adaptable and forgiving.
Care Reality Check:
• Water every 2–3 weeks
• Let soil dry completely
• No direct sunlight needed
• Tolerates temperature changes and low humidity
Medium-Light Crowd-Pleasers
For salons with indirect window light or bright overhead lighting.
Peace Lily
Calming, elegant, and a strong air purifier. Occasional white blooms add softness without overpowering the space.
Philodendron
Lush and flexible — available in bushy or trailing varieties. A great “starter plant” for anyone new to greenery.
Dracaena
Tall and slim, perfect for adding height in corners without taking up valuable floor space.
Care Reality Check:
• Water when top inch of soil is dry
• Weekly or bi-weekly works for most salons
• Rotate occasionally for even growth
Bright-Light Showstoppers
Only for salons with strong, consistent natural light.
Rubber Plant
Bold, modern leaves that anchor a space. Great for entrances or retail areas.

Fiddle Leaf Fig
Beautiful — but not for beginners. Only happy in bright, stable light.
Succulents
Perfect for sunny windowsills. Very low water needs, but very high light needs.
Care Reality Check:
• Less water is more
• Never let roots sit in water
• Rotate monthly
• Not suitable for dark salons
Plant Shapes = Design Tools
Vining Plants
Soften hard lines, add movement, and create flow.
Perfect above shelves, mirrors, and reception desks.
Bushy Plants
Add fullness and warmth. Ideal for waiting areas and beside styling stations.
Large Structural Plants
Add drama, height, and help absorb sound. Best for corners, entryways, and framing retail displays. Succulents
Great accents — not centerpieces. Only thrive in strong light.
The Air-Freshening MVPs
Plants won’t replace ventilation, but these varieties are known for filtering common salon toxins:
• Snake Plant
• Peace Lily
• Pothos
• Dracaena
• Rubber Plant
• Spider Plant
Spread them throughout the salon rather than relying on one large plant for maximum benefit.
Common Salon Plant Pests (And How to Avoid Them)
Warm salons can attract pests if plants are stressed.
• Spider mites: fine webbing under leaves
• Fungus gnats: a sign of overwatering

• Mealybugs: white cottony clusters Prevention:
• Let soil dry between waterings
• Improve airflow
• Quarantine new plants for one week
• Wipe leaves regularly — salon dust builds fast
Plants That Don’t Love Salon Life
Some plants are just too high-maintenance for a busy salon:
• Ferns (humidity-dependent and messy)
• Ivy (aggressive growth, wall damage)
• Fiddle Leaf Figs in low light
• Strongly scented flowering plants
Allergy-Aware Plant Choices
• Avoid pollen-heavy flowers
• Peace Lily (not a true lily and typically allergy-friendly)
• Rubber Plant sap may bother those with latex allergies
• Strong fragrances can overwhelm sensitive clients
The Most Common Plant Mistakes
• Overwatering because the top soil looks dry
• Placing plants near blow dryers or color stations
• Choosing “Instagram plants” over practical ones
• Ignoring light needs
• Forgetting to clean leaves
• Using decorative pots with no drainage
The best salon plants don’t ask for much — but they give a lot back. Choose plants based on light first, maintenance second, and style last.
Your reward? A salon that feels calmer, fresher, and more welcoming — without adding one more thing to your already full schedule.

Insurance Tips
AHLC Contributes
It's that time! Moving into the new year is a time to set your business up for success through process enhancement, streamlining services, and ensuring things are in line from an operational standpoint — including insurance coverage. When is the last time you reviewed your insurance policies to ensure you are properly covered?
for Hair Restoration Salons
Workers’ Compensation Insurance

Hair restoration salons — whether you do transplants, PRP therapy, microneedling, or non-surgical hair loss treatments — have unique risks, so it’s important to have a solid insurance package. Here’s a breakdown of the types of insurance that are generally considered best for this type of business:
General Liability Insurance
• Covers third-party bodily injury and property damage.
• Example: A client slips and falls in your salon.
• Often required to lease commercial space.
Professional Liability Insurance (aka Malpractice or Errors & Omissions Insurance)
• Covers claims related to services provided, like treatments that cause adverse reactions or don’t deliver promised results.
• Especially important in hair restoration where expectations are high and results vary.
Commercial Property Insurance
• Protects the physical salon space, furniture, equipment (like lasers, microneedling tools, PRP machines) from fire, theft, or damage.
• Legally required if you have employees.
• Covers medical expenses and lost wages for employees injured on the job.
Product Liability Insurance
• If you sell or use products (e.g., topical treatments, shampoos, supplements), this covers harm caused by those products.
Business Interruption Insurance
• Helps cover lost income if you have to temporarily close due to covered events like fire or natural disasters.
Cyber Liability Insurance
• If you store client data (medical history, payment info), this protects against data breaches and cyberattacks.
Optional (But Smart) Add-Ons
Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI)
• Protects against claims like harassment, wrongful termination, or discrimination.
Inland Marine Insurance
• Covers expensive equipment during transport (helpful if you do mobile treatments or move equipment).
Commercial Auto Insurance
• If you have a business vehicle.

Let's Have a Funeral for the Performance Evaluation

By Anita Buchanan, MBA, SPHR, Transform! My Workplace
It’s almost a universal law that nobody likes performance evaluations, appraisals, reviews, or whatever you want to call them. Managers don’t like doing them, employees don’t like receiving them, and HR doesn’t like hounding managers to get them done.

Problems with Performance Evaluation Systems
Does your evaluation process change an employee’s behavior? Improve their performance? Does it enhance an employee’s relationship with their manager?
“I hired you because you’re exceptional, but in our evaluation system, I can only grade you as average.”
How does that make your employee feel?
Reviews tend to downplay problems. In fact, more often than not, performance reviews are used against an employer in wrongful termination lawsuits. If past reviews have been positive, it can be difficult to prove that a termination was based on poor performance.
Another problem is that review systems don’t accurately equate performance to salary. In reality, an employee’s performance is usually last on the list of what determines a salary increase. Consider these factors:
• Profitability: If it hasn’t been a profitable year or if you’re a new startup business, there may not be money for raises, regardless of an employee’s performance.
• Market demand: If there is an employee shortage, you may need to give specific positions higher raises. You don’t want your newly certified trichologist to be recruited away by the medical spa that just opened down the road.
• Salary range: A veteran employee may already be earning more than the typical salary for their role. For example, if your receptionist made $10 per hour in 1995 and you gave them a five percent increase every year, they would be making $43 per hour today. This isn’t a sustainable trajectory.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 13
• Performance: Performance is taken into account only after the first three factors are considered.
The solution? Don’t tie pay increases to performance reviews. Give raises at a different time of the year.
A Better Way: The Coaching Model
The Coaching Model fosters productivity and drives engagement. It empowers employees and builds trust.
Traditional evaluations are focused on the past. The Coaching Model is focused on the future and only looks at past performance that impacts the future.
Consider this statement from a traditional evaluation:
“Jane is normally very punctual, but she slipped a bit in January and February. She did better in the second quarter, but Jane had another series of tardy arrivals in the third quarter. After a written warning, Jane finished the year strong.”
Sound familiar? The problem with this old-school way is that it is talking about the employee, not having a conversation with them. Great systems use conversational dialogue instead!
Under The Coaching Model, system components are different. There are no grades or labels. You don’t rank employees against each other. Most importantly, the emphasis is on employee input.
Everyone’s role changes. Bosses are coaches and not evaluators or critics. The employee's role shifts from passive observer to active participant. Human resources becomes a coach of coaches and not the process police.
Components of the Coaching Model
The coaching schedule revolves around four quarters and includes three steps over the course of the year:
1. Employee Input: The employee completes a simple form that reflects on the past year and shares highlights, disappointments, new skills and experiences. Then they shift gears and look to the future. They offer suggestions for new goals and things they’d like to learn, and share other points they’d like their manager to know.
2. Feedback & Development Plan: The manager reviews information from the employee then completes a Feedback & Development Plan. The basic form has sections for the manager to review the
employee’s previous goals and highlight the employee’s strengths. The manager can revise the goals the employee suggested or recommend different goals. (Rarely, a manager may comment on a serious concern. However, this section is seldom needed because they addressed concerns as they came up during the year.) The manager and employee meet to review the documents, have a conversation and finalize the employee’s goals together.
3. Quarterly Check-ins: The employee is responsible for achieving the goals. They schedule three quarterly meetings with the manager to briefly review progress.

The Private Studio Advantage
Why Trichologists and Hair Restoration Experts Are Choosing Suite Rentals
By Colleen Camp, Global Education Director, Scientific Hair Research and Certified Trichologist
For trichologists, hair loss specialists and hair restoration experts who work with wigs, toppers, hairpieces, the environment in which services are delivered is just as important as the services themselves. Renting a private salon studio or suite offers a unique combination of privacy, professionalism, and business ownership without the complexity of running a traditional salon.
Minimal Overhead

Flexible Location Options
Location is a critical factor in the client experience. A well-positioned building in an accessible, high-visibility area with ample parking helps clients, especially those new to hair loss treatment — arrive with confidence and ease. Within the building, a premium studio location, such as an interior or corner space with privacy glass, offers the discretion and comfort many clients seek.
options, and renewal terms — is key to long-term success.
Included Amenities
One of the most powerful benefits of a private salon space is the ability to open and operate your own specialized hair restoration business with minimal overhead. Leased studio environments are turnkey, allowing professionals to move in and begin serving clients immediately. This eliminates the need for expensive construction buildouts, long-term commercial leases, or shared salon constraints, making it easier to focus on client outcomes and business growth.
Client Privacy
Privacy is essential in hair loss services. Clients experiencing thinning hair, medical hair loss, postpartum shedding, or autoimmune-related hair loss often feel vulnerable. A private studio provides a discreet, one-on-one setting ideal for confidential consultations, scalp analysis, wig fittings, topper applications, and extension services. This level of privacy builds trust, improves client comfort, and enhances conversion and retention.
Generous, thoughtfully designed common areas enhance convenience and elevate professionalism, while clean, wellmaintained hallways and inviting shared spaces reassure clients they are entering a high-quality, credible environment.
Included Maintenance
Operational support matters greatly for hair restoration professionals. Onsite laundry is a major advantage for those working with wigs, toppers, and hair systems, allowing for efficient sanitation and turnaround. Professional maintenance and cleaning services mean you’re not responsible for repairs or facility upkeep, freeing your time for consultations, education, and client care.
Flexible Lease Options
Flexibility is essential in growing hair loss practices. Studio models often offer flexible lease terms and the ability to upgrade to a larger studio as your business expands. This is especially valuable as your service mix grows to include private consultations, retail, and advanced hair replacement solutions. Reviewing the lease carefully — understanding what’s included, upgrade
Most private salon studios come equipped with utilities, Wi-Fi, security, and professional amenities, allowing you to fully customize your space. You can offer multiple services, set your own pricing, and sell your own retail products with the profitable margins you desire. For hair loss specialists, retail sales of thinning hair treatments, scalp care, supplements (where appropriate), and maintenance products can significantly increase revenue. You keep 100% of your service and retail income, while benefiting from the tax advantages of business ownership.
Built-in Networking
Community is another often-overlooked benefit. Being surrounded by other independent professionals — such as estheticians, nail techs, and wellness providers creates natural cross-promotion opportunities. Referrals from complementary services help grow your client base while reinforcing a holistic approach to beauty and wellness.
Perhaps most importantly, studio environments offer enjoyment and ease of ownership without isolation. You experience the freedom of running your own hair restoration business, supported by a proven studio model. With guidance, education, and resources available through leading franchise operators such as Sola Salons, first-time studio owners can transition confidently into entrepreneurship.
A private salon studio allows hair loss professionals to be in business for themselves — but not by themselves. It’s a powerful, modern solution for building a trusted, profitable, and purpose-driven hair restoration practice.

Adding Alternative Hair to Your Business

By Kim Laslo, Owner, Hair by Kim
Alternative
Hair Solutions
Why should you add alternative hair to your existing business? Whether you're a salon owner or a stylist, not servicing clients who need alternative hair has become one of the biggest missed opportunities in today’s salon industry. Not only does offering these services allow you to help people experiencing hair loss, thinning, or medical-related challenges — it is
also an incredible way to significantly increase your income and expand the value of your business.
Hair loss affects millions of men and women, and the demand for skilled, compassionate professionals who can help is growing every year. Most salons still focus on traditional services like color, cuts, and extensions, but there’s a large group of clients being overlooked. By offering alternative hair solutions such as

Adding Alternative Hair to Your Business, cont.
toppers, wigs, and bondable systems, you open your business to a wider market and establish yourself as a stylist who can truly change lives.
For clients, this service is deeply personal. Many people experiencing hair thinning or loss feel embarrassed or unseen. When you offer alternative hair options, you create a safe, supportive space where they can finally feel confident again. You’re not just giving them hair — you’re restoring their self-esteem.
From a business perspective, this addition can be transformative. The alternative hair industry continues to grow and these services complement what you already do. With the right education and support, you can easily integrate them into your current salon model. Even adding a few clients per week can create a substantial new income stream without adding the exhaustion that comes from squeezing in more traditional services.
How I Got Started in the Alternative Hair Business
My journey into the alternative hair world began while running a very successful traditional salon that specialized in tape-ins and extensions. I’ve always focused on services that help protect and support the natural hair, and as my clientele aged, I realized that extensions simply weren’t enough for many of them anymore. That’s when I began researching wigs and toppers. I ultimately chose Jon Renau because they are the sister company of Easihair Pro, one of the extension brands I already trusted. Their commitment to quality and stylist education matched my own philosophy perfectly.
Adding toppers and wigs completely transformed my business. It opened the door to a new level of client care and allowed me to better serve the women who were already in my chair. Seeing their reactions — the relief, the joy, the confidence
returning — was one of the most rewarding experiences of my career. It reignited my passion for this industry and reminded me of why I became a stylist in the first place.
From there, I expanded even further. I added men’s hair bonding, which became one of the most financially impactful services I’ve ever introduced. We eventually added women’s bondables as well, and today my salon operates as a full-service alternative hair business. But you don’t need to add everything at once. You can start slowly — just a few toppers or a small selection of wigs — and grow in the direction that feels right for you.
The Importance of Training and Continuous Growth
Education is everything in the alternative hair world. There’s so much training available today that it can feel overwhelming, but my advice is simple: start with a company whose products you love and take their training programs. When you align with a brand that offers solid education, you’ll gain the technical skill and confidence needed to succeed.
Getting involved with brands is easier than many people think. First, you must have an active cosmetology license. After that, simply contact the brands you're interested in and open a professional account. Most companies provide onboarding support and their own training. I always recommend using a brand’s official education because no one knows their products better than they do. For extensions, industry leaders like EasyHair Pro and Short 2 Long offer strong support. For wigs and toppers, well-respected brands include Jon Renau, Follea, Daniel Alain, and House of European Hair. For men's hair replacement, Jon Renau and HairSkeen both offer excellent product knowledge and education. When it comes to education, online training is incredibly helpful — there are countless informative videos, webinars, and digital
programs available. However, I strongly believe in the irreplaceable value of handson training. In-person education allows you to physically work with the hair, meet fellow professionals, and form meaningful relationships with brand educators. These connections become priceless as you grow, and you’ll often learn just as much from the other attendees as you do from the instructors. As I always say: education is everything. Get it anywhere you can, as often as you can. If you're just starting out, I recommend doing at least one hands-on class in each major category every year. True mastery comes from continuous learning.
Another valuable resource is the American Hair Loss Council. They provide ongoing updates, insights, and support for professionals working with hair loss solutions. Their information can guide you toward deeper, more specialized training and help you stay informed about the latest developments in the industry.
Looking to the Future
I am excited to share that at the beginning of 2026, I will be launching my Alternative Hair Education & Business Solutions Platform. This program will include personal training, one-on-one coaching, and specialized educational courses tailored to the areas that interest you most. Whether you want to focus on toppers, wigs, extensions, men's systems, or grow into a fully developed alternative hair business, this platform will give you the exact tools and knowledge you need to succeed.
You don’t have to offer everything right away. Start small, learn as you go, and build gradually. Each step will bring new clients, new income, and new purpose. Adding alternative hair to your business won’t just change your service menu — it will change how you go to work, why you go to work, and how you feel about your work.
It’s not just a business decision — it’s a life-changing one.

THRIVING AS A SOLOPRENEUR
By Aleta Johnson, Owner, Confident Crowns Hair Restoration, Concord, NC
As the solopreneur behind Confident Crowns Hair Restoration, I’ve learned that building a business by yourself is part courage, creativity, and part “let me ask a friend.” It’s challenging, but it’s also one of the most rewarding journeys.

• Choose a bookkeeping system that connects to your business banking and tracks income, expenses, and reports.
• Use apps that help you market your services, pick the platforms where your ideal clients actually are.
• Have a clear, professional website and a Google page so potential clients can find you and trust your expertise.
Create Boundaries That Protect Both You and Your Clients
When you’re solo, your time and creativity are your currency. Spend them wisely or both you and your business will burn out.
Set boundaries early:
• Stick to clear business hours.
• Set firm pricing and policies.
• Charge appropriately for after-hours or time-intensive services.
If you’re thinking of stepping into this industry alone, or already walking the path and wondering whether you’re doing it “right,” here are a few tips I’ve learned on my journey.
Start with Purpose, Then Build Everything Around It
Before you buy the first thing, ask yourself: Why am I doing this?
For me the purpose was simple. People need a safe place to talk about hair loss, learn about their scalp health, and feel seen without shame. Everything flowed from that: services, branding, tone, partnerships, and policies.
Your purpose becomes your compass. When decisions get heavy or you get overwhelmed, go back to your WHY. When you wonder whether you should learn a new technique or invest in a new tool, check whether it aligns with your purpose.
Wear the Hats, But Know Which One Matters Most
As a solopreneur, you juggle everything: marketing, bookkeeping, customer service, cleaning, learning, and styling. But your most important “hat” is client experience. You can be incredibly skilled, but if clients don’t feel cared for, they won’t return.
Set up simple systems that support you and elevate your service:
• Use an online booking platform for scheduling, payments, forms, and contracts.
Education Is Your Lifeline
Hair restoration evolves constantly with new treatments, tools, research, and regulations. Staying updated isn’t required, but it is what keeps clients safe and your business strong.
Make learning part of your routine:
• Take 1–2 advanced courses each year.
• Study scalp disorders seriously.
• Build relationships with dermatologists and medical professionals.
• Understand product science so you know what truly works.
As a solopreneur, knowledge is your greatest competitive edge.
Community Is Not a Luxury, It’s Vital
Build your circle with intention:
• Join professional groups.
• Attend industry events, even if you go solo.
• Connect with dermatologists, oncologists, nutritionists, and holistic practitioners.
• Share knowledge like teammates on the same mission.
• Lean on family support and a business bestie.
My business grew because of strong family support and a solid industry network. Collaboration will take your business farther than competition ever will.
• Block specific days for admin, content, or research.
Boundaries aren’t restrictive — they keep you sustainable.
Let Your Brand Feel Human
People facing hair loss don’t need a perfect business — they need someone they can trust, someone who understands their reality.
Let your brand feel human:
• Educate with compassion.
• Share inspiring stories without exploiting anyone.
• Write like you’re speaking to one person.
• Show your values through your actions. Your authenticity will market you better than any ad ever will.
Give Yourself Grace While You Grow
Some days you’ll feel unstoppable; other days you’ll want to quit. That’s part of the journey. Celebrate every win, they’re all steps toward your business goals. As a solopreneur in hair restoration, remember: you’re not just restoring hair, you’re restoring confidence and dignity.
Confident Crowns wasn’t built overnight. It was built with intention, compassion, and courage. Stay rooted, stay innovative, and stay brave — even on the days you’re holding it together with bobby pins.
How Trichology Transformed My Career
Amy Gray, Founder, Core and Crown Collective, Ft. Collins, CO
For more than 25 years, I lived fully in the world of traditional hairstyling. I built deep relationships behind the chair, watched families grow up in my salon, and helped clients feel beautiful and confident. But as the years went on, something unexpected started happening more often: my clients were losing their hair, and they were turning to me for answers I didn’t have.

make me stop — it pushed me further.
Understanding the internal connections created a hunger in me to learn more. I dove into functional nutrition, anatomy and physiology, micronutrient deficiencies, glucose metabolism, inflammation pathways, and how movement affects every system of the body. The deeper I went, the more clearly I saw that hair, scalp, and whole-body health were inseparable.
And that realization changed my business forever.

• how the body is responding to recent exposures
• where stress and imbalance may be disrupting hair growth
This information is invaluable because it tells us what the body needs to function better from the inside out. From here, I can create personalized recommendations around nutrition, supplementation, lifestyle support, and movement — all based on how the client’s body is actually functioning.
I could camouflage, conceal, blend, and style. But when they asked why their hair was thinning, shedding, or coming out in handful, I didn’t know what to tell them. After decades behind the chair, that realization hit hard. These were clients who trusted me with everything, and I felt I was failing them by not understanding the root causes.
That moment became a turning point.
Rather than accept “I don’t know", I went searching for answers. That search led me to trichology, and the education I received cracked open an entirely new world— not just for my career, but for my entire approach to wellness.
Once I began my trichology studies, everything changed. The deeper I dug into the science of the hair and scalp, the more I realized that hair loss was almost never just a “hair problem”. It was a body problem. A reflection of internal imbalance. A signal of stress the body could no longer hide.
Suddenly, it all made sense. Hair loss wasn’t random. It wasn’t cosmetic failure. It was systemic. But that knowledge didn’t
The Epigenetic Hair Scan: The Starting Point for Internal Insight
One of the most impactful additions to my practice is the epigenetic hair scan. For many clients, this is the true beginning of their hair restoration journey because it gives us clarity on what the body needs internally before we ever address what’s happening on the surface.
The scan provides a real-time snapshot of the body’s biological signals. It is noninvasive, incredibly detailed, and offers insights that go far beyond what a standard consultation can reveal. Instead of relying on guesswork or symptoms alone, we’re able to see the internal influences affecting a client’s hair and overall well-being. The report becomes a foundational roadmap, revealing:
• which systems of the body are challenged
• which nutrients or co-factors are deficient
• inflammatory and oxidative stress patterns
• environmental or lifestyle stressors
The epigenetic hair scan doesn’t diagnose disease, and it isn’t meant to replace medical testing. Instead, it gives us a comprehensive look at the underlying imbalances contributing to hair thinning and shedding. It helps us support clients holistically and more accurately, so every step forward is intentional and informed.
Microscopic Scalp & Follicular Analysis: Understanding the Surface-Level Story
If the epigenetic hair scan tells us what’s happening inside the body, the microscopic scalp and follicular analysis tells us what’s happening on the surface. This is the second essential component of my customized hair restoration process.
Using high-resolution digital microscopy, I’m able to examine the scalp at up to 200x magnification — revealing what the naked eye can’t. Many clients are shocked when they see their scalp in real time and finally understand why their hair feels thin, brittle, oily, or inconsistent.
This analysis helps us clearly identify:
• congestion blocking healthy follicle function
• dry, oily, or inflamed scalp conditions

• the health, diameter, and density of existing hair fibers
• early patterns of thinning or miniaturization
• biofilm, dandruff, or microbial imbalance
• circulation issues affecting follicle performance
• whether any degree of scarring has begun to manifest
And that last point is critical.
Microscopy allows us to determine whether the scalp is experiencing scarring or fibrosis — changes that can permanently damage the follicle and impact how well hair can regrow. This information helps us decide whether a client is a good candidate for restorative therapies or if a hair replacement solution may ultimately be the better, more effective option.
This step is crucial because the scalp is the soil — and healthy soil grows healthier hair. Unlike the internal insights from the epigenetic scan, the microscopic analysis guides our topical and localized plan: detoxification, exfoliation, nourishment, barrier repair, stimulation, or circulation support, depending on what the images reveal.
Together, the epigenetic scan and microscopic analysis give us a full picture — internal imbalances + external conditions + follicular integrity.
And it’s that combination that allows every client to move forward on the correct path from the very beginning.
The Role of Nutrition: Fueling Hair Growth from the Inside Out
Trichology opened my eyes to something I could never unsee: hair loss is often a nutritional story long before it becomes a
visible one. Once I understood how internal imbalances impact the follicle, nutrition naturally became one of the most powerful tools in my practice.
Hair is a nonessential tissue — meaning the body only prioritizes it when everything else is functioning well. When nutrients are low, digestion is impaired, inflammation is high, or blood sugar is unstable, the body diverts resources away from hair growth to protect vital organs. Clients often think they simply “have thin hair,” but when we look deeper, nutrition tells the real story.
This is why nutrition is now a pillar of every restoration plan I create.
Through my nutrition training and continued education, I help clients understand:
• the connection between gut health and nutrient absorption
• how vitamin and mineral deficiencies impact the growth cycle
• why chronic inflammation can shrink or “choke” the follicle
• how protein intake affects hair fiber strength and density
• the role of healthy fats in hormone balance and scalp function
• how blood sugar swings contribute to shedding and stress on the follicle
• which foods support detoxification, circulation, and cellular repair
We don’t guess. We look at their epigenetic scan, symptoms, lifestyle, and hair loss pattern to determine where their body needs nutritional support.
Even simple shifts — eating adequate protein, choosing anti-inflammatory foods, or stabilizing blood sugar — can
dramatically improve how the hair grows, how the scalp feels, and how responsive the follicles become.
Nutrition isn’t a trendy add-on. It’s a fundamental part of successful hair restoration.
When we nourish the body, we nourish the follicle — and when the internal environment improves, external results follow.
Movement & The Pilates Connection: Restoring the Body
As I continued learning how the body influences hair, one truth became impossible to ignore: a body under chronic stress will focus more on regulating systemic functions instead growing healthy hair.
Movement became a natural extension of my trichology and nutrition work because it is one of the most effective tools we have to reduce inflammation, regulate hormones, improve circulation, and calm the nervous system — all of which directly affect the hair growth cycle.
But not all movement supports healing in the same way.
High-intensity exercise can spike cortisol, increase inflammation, and stress the very systems we’re trying to restore. What my clients needed was movement that rebuilt them from the inside out — strengthening the core, improving alignment, enhancing circulation, calming the nervous system, and supporting metabolic function without over-stressing the body. That’s when Pilates became the obvious choice.
Pilates is intentional, controlled, and deeply restorative. It strengthens weak muscles, lengthens tight areas, improves

posture, enhances blood flow to the scalp and extremities, and balances the body’s mechanics. It supports lymphatic movement, encourages diaphragmatic breathing, and lowers sympathetic nervous system activation — the very stress response that can trigger or worsen hair shedding.
As I integrated movement into my practice, Pilates became the modality that aligned perfectly with my holistic philosophy: strengthen, realign, and restore.
Just as the scalp needs the right environment to grow healthy hair, the body needs the right environment to heal. Pilates helps create that environment — physically and physiologically.
Reflection: The Heart Behind the Work
Today, my work looks nothing like the salon I started in 31 years ago. Trichology became the catalyst for building a completely integrated practice — one that blends scalp science, nutritional coaching, epigenetic
analysis, hair restoration, and movementbased wellness. I now approach every client with a 360-degree lens: what is their body trying to tell us, and how can we support it?
Instead of guessing, I can finally give answers. Instead of feeling helpless when a client fears they’re losing their hair, I now have the tools, the science, and the confidence to guide them. And instead of offering temporary cosmetic fixes, I help them understand their body, their biology, and how deeply their internal health influences their hair.
Trichology didn’t just transform my business — it expanded it into something more meaningful and aligned than I ever imagined. It elevated the way I serve, the conversations I have, and the results my clients are seeing. What trichology gave me — and what I now get to offer — is the ability to slow down, listen, investigate, and truly support someone through one of the most vulnerable challenges they’ll ever face. It taught me to move beyond the stylist’s mirror and into the full story of the person in front of me.
It changed the way I see people. It changed the way I serve. It changed the kind of practitioner — and the kind of woman — I’ve become.
Most importantly, it gave me the ability to provide something every client with hair loss desperately needs: clarity, education, and hope.
And to me, that is sacred work; the greatest gift this journey has given me.
My work today is a blend of science, compassion, and whole-body understanding. It is technical and clinical, yes — but also deeply human. I get to give clients back a sense of control. I get to help them reconnect with their bodies. I get to witness their confidence return as they start to feel like themselves again.
As I continue to grow, integrate new modalities, and refine the way I support clients, one thing remains constant: my commitment to providing clarity, education, and hope to everyone who walks through my doors. Because when we help people restore their hair, we often restore so much more.
Trich-ah-luh-jist: Why Pronunciation is Key
The field of trichology is dedicated to the scientific study of the hair and scalp. As trained professionals, Trichologists provide assessment and guidance for a wide range of concerns, including alopecia, diffuse thinning, inflammatory scalp disorders, and the systemic contributors that impact hair growth and scalp integrity.
Our role is not cosmetic alone. It is investigative, clinical, and collaborative. Trichologists frequently work alongside dermatologists, endocrinologists, and nutrition professionals, supporting patients through microscopic analysis, nutritional review, and evidence-informed protocols.
Why Pronunciation Matters
The word trichologist is correctly pronounced “trich-ah-luh-jist” — derived from the Greek thrix, meaning “hair.” A frequent error is the mispronunciation “try-chologist.”
This distinction is more than semantic. In professional healthcare environments, accuracy in terminology directly influences perception of credibility. When language is imprecise, it risks diminishing both the expertise of the practitioner and the recognition of trichology as a serious scientific discipline.
Just as we uphold precise language in all other medical fields — whether dermatology, cardiology, or endocrinology — the same standard applies here. Correct pronunciation signals respect for the discipline and reinforces our place within the broader medical and wellness community.
Advancing Professional Recognition
For the medical community: Proper use of the title fosters respect, collaboration, and alignment with clinical standards.
For the industry: Consistency elevates trichology from a misunderstood niche to a recognized specialty in hair and scalp health.
For patients and clients: Accurate communication establishes confidence that they are receiving professional, sciencebased care.
Trichology is a discipline grounded in science and collaboration. As trichologists, we not only serve patients but also advocate for the professional integrity of our field. Pronouncing our title correctly is a small but powerful step in gaining respect across the medical community and ensuring that trichology is recognized for what it truly is: a legitimate, evidence-based specialty in hair and scalp health.
We are trich-ologists — never try-chologists.

Leading With Heart
Collaboration, Competition, and Community in Hair Loss Care
By Michelle Schumm, Owner, Restore Hair Loss Salon, Minnetonka, MN
Over more than 29 years in the hair loss industry, I’ve learned that success isn’t measured by numbers it’s measured by the lives we touch and the people we lift along the way. I’ve had the privilege of mentoring and educating incredibly talented stylists including Amanda Warne (Studio W), Erin Lindenbaum (Elevate Salon), and Sarah Cotter (Hair Revival) and watching them grow into confident professionals. Together, we shared early mornings, late nights, and every step of the learning process.
All of us eventually left the salon where we first worked together to pursue our own paths, opening thriving hair loss salons of our own. Some might expect competition or distance to develop but that’s not how we operate. Instead, we’ve built a network grounded in support, respect, and a shared focus on the client experiencing hair loss. Healthy competition pushes us to refine our skills and elevate our craft, but collaboration ensures that the people we serve always come first.
but I’ve seen the opposite. When salons focus on their strengths, maintain high standards, and refer clients when another stylist or location is better suited to meet a client’s needs, everyone benefits. Competition motivates innovation and excellence, but collaboration ensures that the client has options and receives the best possible care.
we’ve come. We compared notes, tackled challenging cases, and even traded pieces when one of usneeded something specific for a client experiencing hair loss. These moments reinforced the bond built through years of trust and shared passion.
Even after the conference, our connection continues. We meet monthly to brainstorm, problem-solve, celebrate successes, and support one another’s continued growth. These meetings are more than professional gatherings they reflect our commitment to each other and to the clients we serve.

Collaboration Strengthens the Community
Healthy Competition Elevates Everyone
In our community, multiple hair loss salons operate within a 20-mile radius. Some might assume this creates tension,
One of my favorite experiences was attending the National Hair Loss Council Conference with Amanda, Erin, and Sarah(unable to attend this year due to her wedding). Instead of going our separate ways, we shared a room just like we once shared space in the salon. Late-night conversations, early-morning classes, and long days of learning reminded us of how far
A Thriving Hair Loss Community Benefits Everyone
Multiple hair loss salons can coexist and succeed in the same area when they prioritize professionalism, communication, and client care. Competition motivates excellence, but collaboration ensures that the client experiencing hair loss always receives the highest level of care. Together, we are proving that healthy competition and collaboration don’t just coexist they elevate the industry, strengthen our community, and provide the best outcomes for the people we serve.
We are all looking forward to seeing you all at the next HairNow Conference in Nashville! Please feel free to reach out or chat with us. We love connecting with fellow professionals.

Bhringaraj

By Prerna Khemka, CEO, HairSmart Inc., Highland Heights, OH
We all know the moment. A loyal client sits in your chair, looks in the mirror, and sighs. Their hairline is receding, or their ponytail feels half the size it was last year. They look at you, their trusted expert, and ask, "What can I do?" In recent decades, the standard answer has been: "Try minoxidil."

versus how bhringaraj works. Think of the scalp as a garden. Minoxidil is a chemical fertilizer, a stimulant. It is a vasodilator and forces blood vessels to open up, rushing blood to the hair follicle. It’s like pouring highintensity chemical fertilizer on a plant. It forces the plant to grow quickly.
• The Problem: It doesn’t change the quality of the soil. It doesn't fix the root cause.
growth phase). It naturally extends the amount of time hair stays in the growth mode before shedding. It creates a better, healthier "soil" for the hair to thrive in.
A Missed Business Opportunity
As salon owners, we have to look at the bottom line. You cannot prescribe minoxidil. You cannot private-label it easily. It is a readily available at any grocery store. When you recommend minoxidil alone:
The industry is shifting. Clients are becoming wary of chemicals. They are asking for natural, holistic, clean solutions. They don't want a prescription; they want restoration. This is where bhringaraj, "The King of Hair", changes the game.
Many studies confirm that this 5,000-year-old ancient herb isn't just an alternative to minoxidil; biologically, it may be superior. And for salon owners, it represents a massive opportunity: the ability to treat hair loss effectively with high-end, natural retail products that keep the revenue in your business.
The Science Simplified: The Stimulant vs. The Soil
We need to look at how minoxidil works
• The Result: The moment you stop using it, the growth stops, and the "rebound shedding" begins. Many clients also hate the side effects: greasy texture, scalp irritation, and initial shedding.
Bhringaraj is the soil restorer! It is scientifically proven to be a natural revitalizer. Instead of just forcing blood flow, it nourishes the actual follicle and calms the scalp environment.
• The Science: A landmark study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology pitted bhringaraj directly against minoxidil (2% solution) in lab trials. The result? The test subjects treated with bhringaraj actually showed faster hair regrowth than the minoxidil group.
• Bhringaraj targets the anagen Phase (the
• You lose control: The client manages their treatment away from your guidance.
• You lose revenue: That is a recurring monthly purchase going to a pharmaceutical company, not you.
• You risk trust: If they have a bad reaction or hate the texture, they associate that bad advice with you.
Bhringaraj: The Heavy Hitter You Can "Prescribe"
Since bhringaraj is an all-natural Ayurvedic herb, it fits perfectly into a salon retail model. It allows you to offer a clinicalstrength natural solution without needing a medical license. Here is why it works better for your client’s hair, and better for your retention rates:
• It Fights the Inflammation Fire: Most hair

loss (especially in the 30s and 40s) is linked to inflammation — a hot, irritated scalp that causes the follicle to shrink. Bhringaraj is a cooling herb. It contains bio-actives (like wedelolactone) that reduce inflammation. A calm scalp holds onto hair longer.
• It Handles the DHT Problem: We know DHT (dihydrotestosterone) is the enemy of hair follicles. Bhringaraj has natural DHT-regulating properties. It protects the follicle from shrinking, but without the sexual side effects associated with oral medical treatments.
• It Reduces Breakage (Immediate satisfaction): While regrowth takes time (three - six months), bhringaraj creates stronger hair fibers immediately. It is rich in minerals and proteins. When clients use bhringaraj oil, they see less breakage in the shower now, which keeps them motivated to stick with the program while the regrowth happens.
Start offering root-cause protocols. This is where the demand is. The global natural hair care market is exploding. Your clients are already looking for these solutions.
The Math of Natural Regrowth:
The beauty of hair replacement isn't just
Is the Ancient "King of Hair" More Effective Than the Drugstore Standard?
in systems or wigs; it’s in prevention and restoration protocols. This is the secret to increasing your lifetime value per client. You don't need to add hours of labor to make this work. You simply need to include the, "Let's put you on a restoration protocol" conversation in .
Imagine putting 50 of your existing cut-and-color clients on a bhringaraj-based regimen (oil + supplement + serum).
• The Investment: Five minutes of consultation during their regular cut.
• The Product: A 3-step system they take home.
• The Retention: Hair growth requires consistency. These clients will need to replenish their products every 4-6 weeks.
• The Result: You have created a recurring revenue stream that generates profit even when the client isn't physically in the salon.
How to Introduce It: The "Inside-Out" Approach
You are the expert. Your clients trust you more than they trust a drugstore label. Here is the simple script to introduce Ayurvedic solutions:
"I'm noticing some changes in density here. We could do the old-school chemical
route, but I’m seeing much better, longerlasting results with Ayurvedic biotechnology. It feeds the hair root rather than just stimulating it. It’s a simple 2-minute routine at home. Do you want to try the natural route first?"
The Protocol for Success
To get results consistency is key. We suggest a two-pronged approach:
• Topical (The Fertilizer): A bhringarajinfused scalp oil or serum. This provides direct nutrition to the follicle and encourages blood flow through massage.
• Internal (The Seed): A hair vitamin containing bhringaraj and DHT blockers to fix the internal imbalances causing the shed.
The Bottom Line
Bhringaraj offers your clients a safer, non-toxic, and scientifically-backed way to regrow their hair. More importantly, it offers you — the salon owner — a way to reclaim the hair loss category. It allows you to offer a high-value, exclusive solution that builds trust and drives profit.
Don't let your clients leave emptyhanded. Give them the "King of Hair," and watch both their confidence and your retail revenue grow.

Leading with Passion and Purpose
By Nichole Caskinette, Owner, The Hair & Scalp Clinic, Midlothian, VA
From childhood, hair replacement was not just a profession but a world that sparked my curiosity and imagination. I spent countless hours in the salon, observing, learning, and absorbing the industry. It wasn't just about hair; it was about confidence, transformation, and making people feel their best. This early exposure instilled in me a deep understanding and passion that set the foundation for my journey.

Climbing The Ladder
While I found great satisfaction in hair replacement solutions, I still noticed a deeper need among my clients. Many were seeking not just cosmetic fixes but also answers to underlying hair and scalp issues. This realization sparked my curiosity and led me to delve into the world of trichology, the science of hair and scalp health. I saw it as a natural extension of my work, allowing me to address the root causes of hair loss or scalp anomolies rather than just the symptoms.
my career, it was unexpectedly interrupted by a severe illness that rendered me unable to work. This period was marked by intense pain, weight loss, my organs shutting down and hair loss. Overcoming my own hair loss journey involved a combination of lifestyle changes, stress management techniques, and targeted treatments. I learned the importance of self-care, nutrition, and a holistic approach to hair health. This experience not only restored my own hair but also transformed how I would approach things in my own practice.
As I transitioned from observer to participant, starting with hair replacement, to wigs and then extensions, I embraced every role, eager to master the technical skills and understand the emotional connection with clients. Each challenge was a lesson, and every success fueled my desire to innovate and elevate the industry.
Subsequently, I transitioned into training fellow employees, which broadened my perspective. I realized my ambition extended far beyond individual client impact to influencing a wider audience beyond my geographical area.
The Turning Point
What I initially perceived as the peak of
Following nearly two years of medical treatment, my children and I decided to pursue a new chapter in our lives which led to our relocation to Florida where I became the hair replacement specialist at Bauman Medical. This opportunity made me realize that, contrary to my fears, my career was just beginning!
This was one of the most transformative experiences in my career to collaborate with both Leading Hair Loss experts, Dr.

Fueling My Passion
My life took another turn when I met my husband, who already had a wellestablished business in Virginia. Embracing change yet again, I moved to Virginia and established my own hair loss center. While awaiting the transfer of licenses and the completion of my centers construction, I realized I finally had time to pursue formal education in Trichology, something I aspired to do for over twelve years.
After dedicating two decades to my career, returning to school was a significant step, driven by my desire to expand my knowledge, refine my skills, and stay at the forefront of my field.
My journey into trichology involved extensive study, certifications, and handson training. I immersed myself in understanding the complex factors that influence hair growth, from genetics and nutrition to hormonal imbalances and environmental stressors. It was a transformative experience that broadened my perspective and deepened my commitment to client well-being.
Triumph and Future Vision
Following a period of intense dedication to opening my own center with long days and sleepless nights, juggling school, being a mom and wife, I was presented with an incredible opportunity. I was offered the position as the U.S. educator for a world wide company that specializes in medical grade hair prosthetics. This opportunity to educate and empower individuals with the latest advancements in hair restoration is incredibly rewarding. I am committed to providing comprehensive training and

These transformations are more than just cosmetic improvements; they're life-changing moments. The happiness and gratitude that clients express are what fuel my passion for this industry. It's a reminder that what we do has a real and lasting impact on people's lives, and that's why I love what I do.
support, ensuring that professionals across the country are equipped with the knowledge and skills to excel in this dynamic industry.
This journey has not only enriched my professional life but also reinforced the importance of lifelong learning and continuous improvement. I am excited to make a meaningful impact on the lives of others and contribute to the growth of the hair restoration industry.
Today, as the owner of my own hair loss center, I am committed to providing exceptional service, empowering individuals, and pushing the boundaries of what's possible in hair restoration. My practice integrates both hair replacement and trichology,
providing a holistic approach to hair and scalp health. The journey from growing up in the business to leading it has been a privilege, and I'm excited to continue shaping its future.
Now, as I reflect on my journey, I can see how every step, both easy and difficult, aligned perfectly with God's plan for me. Even if that was starting over multiple times. The skills I acquired, the relationships I built, and the experiences I gained all contributed to my readiness for this role. It's a humbling realization that what seemed like setbacks at the time were actually stepping stones to my ultimate destination. I am grateful for the journey and for the opportunity to fulfill God's purpose in my life.

Remote and on-demand series
HALO™: Your Complete Genetic Compass for Hair, Scalp & Longevity Optimization
Smart Solutions RX introduces a forward-thinking educational series built around HALO™ for Hair, Aesthetics and Longevity Optimization, the first DNA test to unite hair restoration, scalp health, skin aging, and whole-body wellness into one actionable platform. This series helps trichologists and medical professionals elevate their expertise by integrating geneticsdriven treatment planning, informed modality selection, and long-term longevity strategies into everyday practice.
HALO™ moves far beyond standard hair loss testing. It evaluates androgen pathways, prostaglandin signaling, inflammation, nutrient genetics, oxidative stress, mitochondrial efficiency, nitric oxide pathways, collagen stability, and predicted responses to NAD+, NMN, and NO-based technologies. With this insight, providers can design uniquely personalized programs that connect in-office modalities such as LED technologies (including Revian’s™ NO-mediated red light), exosomes, peptide boosters, microneedling, regenerative biologics, and custom topicals with each client’s genetic profile.
Each HALO™ session delivers clear, modern guidance on hair biology, scalp skin interdependence, and holistic longevity medicine. Participants learn how to personalize care, improve outcomes, set expectations, and strengthen client relationships. By linking hair loss to systemic wellness, mitochondrial aging, and skin barrier longevity pathways, the educational series equips practitioners with a more precise and comprehensive toolkit.
Key topics:
• NO Limits: How Nitric Oxide Genetics Predict Revian™ Success
