A hallmark of Crickhowell’s cultural calendar, the hugely popular annual Open Studios Weekend is an opportunity to visit creative spaces spiralling out from the centre of Crickhowell. It provides the perfect excuse to explore the area.
Artists will open their doors enabling visitors to see works-inprogress, learn about different creative processes, and often buy unique work directly from the artists.
Participating galleries will be filled to the brim with paintings, prints, drawings, jewellery, ceramics and sculpture giving access to great variety and quality.
Curate your own art ‘trail’ by following those distinctive red arrows across the area and support the region’s creative community who have made the return of this event possible for the thirteenth year. Studios are free to visit with plenty of places to linger en-route to eat, drink and explore. Many artists will welcome commissions and be willing to open their studios by appointment at other times of the year.

The return of the Crickhowell Open Art Exhibition was a welcome addition to the Platinum Jubilee weekend activities and annual Open Studios Weekend in 2022 and was a true celebration of creativity. In addition to a prize of £500 for the overall winner various category prizes were awarded.
• Overall Winner: Carol Bartlet (D)
• Tower Gallery Prize: Nick Pritchard (C)
• Textile Award: Mary Gladstone
• Watercolour Award: John R Harris (A)
• Young Artist Award: Joanna Groves
• Digital Award: Stuart Lloyd
• Printmakers Award: Paul Rickard (B)
• Visitors’ Choice Award: Wendy Mcleod
Quality and variety have become hallmarks of the exhibition, drawing artists from a wide area. Overall winner Carol Bartlet is a textile artist from Penarth, South Wales. She uses collaged fabrics and thread to draw with a free-motion embroidery technique. As is the case with her winning entry ‘Mr Leas’s shop’, Carol often uses historical photographs taken from local lives and businesses from Cardiff and Penarth to inspire her stitched pictures.
We very much appreciate that artists have enabled us to show a wonderfully diverse mix of works in a vast array of styles and media. We are equally grateful for prize-money in excess of £2000 which was donated by supporters of the gallery. These generous donations reflect the immense support the Oriel CRiC Gallery receives from individuals who value its ethos.
Saturday 27 May (10.30am–4pm)
Kim Colebrook (A)
Much of Abergavenny-based ceramicist Kim Colebrook’s work is inspired by her passion for telling the stories of South Wales, the history of its people and its natural assets. Kim’s work uses the Japanese technique of Nerikomi (working with coloured clay) to explore the layers of the South Wales coalfield. Her demonstration will show a variety of approaches to layering the porcelain and oxide porcelains, and the different effects that can be achieved by cutting the clay in various ways. She will also talk about her relatively recent artistic career and her creative work.
Feel free to drop in for a couple of minutes or stay longer. All welcome.
Sunday 28 May
Ann Notley (B)
With the support of the Jean Williams Foundation, Ann Notley and Jan Winstanley have created the opportunity for those interested in hand embroidery to meet regularly in the CRiC conference room. They celebrate and share the skill of hand embroidery and, in particular, stumpwork – a fascinating and intricate form of needlework that dates back to 17th century England. Historically, stumpwork embroidery was commonly utilised for ornamenting religious vestments and church decorations, along with more personal items such as boxes or caskets. The technique involves creating raised elements in a design. By incorporating raised elements, such as flowers, insects or animals, into the design, the piece becomes more visually appealing and tactile.

Former County Architect for Gwent in South Wales, David Haswell began painting in 1997, following his retirement from local government. His intention is to create highly textured images of the UK National Parks, presented with drama, contrast and bordering on the semi abstract. Though self-taught he believes that his approach has been largely influenced by his interest in the work of three Welsh painters: Kyffin Williams, John Blockley and John Knapp-Fisher. The effect is achieved through a combination of textural work, applied with a palette knife, and overlays of deeply saturated pure watercolours from Italy.

She now works full time as a landscape artist and paints every day, usually outdoors ‘en plein air’ or from her studio in Abergavenny. The Makers Craft Gallery is a traditional and contemporary artisan collective, showcasing the work of talented makers, artists and craftspeople from around Wales and the Borders, with many members living locally. Members steward the gallery, offering you the opportunity to chat with different makers each time you visit, and discover more about their work. On display you will find cards, prints, paintings, photography, woodturning, glass art, textiles, metalwork, sculpture, ceramics, willow and artisanal flowers. You can find a small ‘just because’ gift, something for a special occasion or a real collector’s piece. There truly is ‘something for everyone’ at the gallery. Many of the makers also run regular workshops across the region, which you can read about on their website, and you can enquire about commissions too.
You will find the gallery on the ground floor of the historic Lulworth House on Monk Street, opposite the junction to lower Monk Street, just a minute’s walk from St Mary’s Church, in the thriving town of Abergavenny and its creative community. Lulworth House has a fascinating past and retains some interesting and beautiful original features, such as a library cabinet, 16th century beams and an oilcloth floor – all of which are works of art in themselves! During the Open Studios Weekend the gallery will be open on each of the three days. During the rest of the year the gallery usually opens Tuesdays to Sundays, so members are excited to be open for the Bank Holiday Monday. You can browse the gallery’s three rooms and the garden, where you will find more sculpture and a pop-up cafe.
