History

Old School

Merced located in Central Valley California was founded in 1870 and is the city of local culture, community and people. Merced was known as a railroad town when the Central Pacific Railroad extended its line through the area. Named after the nearby Merced River, the city quickly grew as an agricultural hub because of its fertile soil and access to irrigation. Merced became the main Merced County and was incorporated as a city in 1889. Over time, it developed into a regional center for farming, particularly for crops like almonds, dairy, and fruit. In 2005, the University of California, Merced was established, marking the city’s growth and bringing increased educational and economic opportunities to the area.

Script

Merced has evolved over the years and with the new UC Merced college opening, the town has changed from its old ways to a new and modern look. But even though there are new looks, buildings, businesses and people, the town still keeps its old type style on buildings to show the history of downtown and to never let us forget where Merced really started and what it looked like.

Upon going into the hair salon to look at the typography, a breeze of nostalgia came back to me when I used to go with my mom when I was younger when she would get her hair done. The building looks the same now as it did before, the grainy brick texture of the wall followed by the vinyl Sans Serif on the windows that haven’t aged since I could remember and still holding the native Merced feel.

At the hand massage establishment I was very shocked to see such a strong font on the window.

Knowing that this is an old building the font seems to be very modern and well done. It is strange to me that even though the building and the style of the typography is very clear to be old school it still is a typeface that is seen to this day in the modern world.

The El Capitan Hotel, originally built in 1872, was one of Merced’s most prominent and historic landmarks. Located in the heart of downtown, it was a place for people heading to Yosemite National Park and played a central role in the city’s early hospitality and social scene. Over the decades, it underwent several renovations and ownership changes. Though the original building saw periods of decline, it remained a symbol of Merced. In recent years, a new El Capitan Hotel was revived on the same site

Cigar Monkey is a staple to downtown Merced for its unique name, logo and typography. This business has been around for years and never once revamped or changed the logo or the name because this shop is the heart of Merced and a go place for many Merced natives. This plastic banner stood outside the corner of the street next to the crosswalk and directed people to stop by Cigar Monkey

This shop has been around for so long and the lady who owns it has been by her store for more than over 47 years. When I arrived at the shop I was greeted by her and she was still stocking the shelves and moving things around at her age of 89. She said that this place was her passion and still loves it till this day. This shop is a place where you can get cute garden decoratives, mugs, rugs and many more home improvement things.

Street Signs

Merced has a very large skateboard, bike and scooter scene and these signs are posted all over downtown Merced because the sidewalks are very narrow and are normally full of people talking. Downtown is also a one way street so there is not a whole lot of room for other things like skateboarders and things like that especially since there is a skateboard shop down the street.

Wood Type

When I came across these two places I was actually not familiar with them, they are both private places that people come to just work but something stood out to me. It was the signs that both of the companies used and it was a wood based sign. I have never seen a company sign that was made from wood. One of the places was an old place that was installed a long time ago but the new company even used wood when there are so many more and different styles to use.

Community Type

The type in Merced is based on the community of people and in these flyers it shows basing the typography and style around the community. Many are first-generation college students, with a growing presence at UC Merced and local colleges, working to build brighter futures for themselves and their families. They bring a rich blend of cultural traditions and modern influences, seen in local music, fashion, food, and social media.

Metal Modern

The hotel’s architecture pays homage to its rich history, with design elements inspired by the nearby 19th-century train depot, reflecting Merced’s legacy as a transportation hub. The hotel’s location in the heart of downtown Merced provided easy access to local attractions, including the historic Mainzer Theater.

This Pizza spot is a go to for any local or visitor of merced. I was immediately drawn to its inviting and cozy atmosphere. The interior featured a minimalist design with clean lines and simple, elegant typography on the menu boards and signage, which added a modern touch to the space.
