The proposed scheme was originally developed to provide replacement accommodation for the nearby Hazelwood Care Home, providing specialist residential care for the people within the local community.

The layout and opportunities within the site gave the potential for the team to develop an integrated scheme incorporating Extra Care accommodation and elements for community use. The brief then developed to create a facility which could become a real hub for the community, with quality residential units and public space.

The project involved the refurbishment and conversion of derelict offices into seventyseven luxury, city centre apartments over five refurbished floors and two newbuild above. The scheme developed on site as demolition uncovered anomalies, however as a design team, solutions were built in and a successful end product was delivered.

The interfaces between old and new had to be approached sensitively, being located in Birmingham’s Colmore Business District, placed The Lightwell notonly alongside some of the areas signature building stock but internally the building had numerous features .

The Client’s brief was to create a new central heart to their campus, bringing together a range of users in a multifaced group of buildings.

The existing buildings were located on a prominent corner in Coventry’s street scape, looking into historical routes and artifacts, the site was rearranged to allow a more permeable frontage.

Constraints Heavily contoured landscape.

Current main route along road. ‘back of house’ feel to camp street.

Noise from the A449.

Reduced number of students walking along the roadside.

Create a final destination to the campus to draw students through.

Improve surface conditions and feeling of the public realm to Camp Street.

Entrance to MH building demanding and unclear.

Increase quality of pathway.

Current level access route is poor.

Create better level access links between areas.

Poor access at the top of the site.

Create ‘front door’ to campus through introduction of landscaped areas and better wayfinding.

Car park creates uninviting access.

MK building is the main visual connection to A4150. Campus has no presence along roads.
