Buchanan’s Calendar of Events features favorites such as the Buchanan Community Carnival with parade and fireworks, Mountain Magic In Fall Bluegrass, Antiques & Crafts Festival as well as more recent introductions like the Buchanan Garden Festival, Third Fridays Block Parties, Pork by the James BBQ Fest and the Buchanan Tri-Run, Ride & River Race.

Settled at the intersection of the Colonial Era’s “Great Valley Road” and the James River, Buchanan has been an

important stopping point for travelers since the 1700’s. In Colonial days, wagons stopped in Buchanan to rest and gather provisions. Today, travelers stop for gas, food, shopping and the chance to stretch their legs.

In the early 1800’s Buchanan was the terminus of the James River and Kanawha Canal, as a result, the Town quickly became the center of commerce for the surrounding area. During the Civil War Buchanan served as a Confederate supply depot for the shipment of agricultural produce and pig iron to Richmond via the James River and Kanawha Canal.

Today, visitors flock to this waterfront location to picnic, stroll, fish along the banks of the James River, or to canoe, kayak or tube the Upper James River Water Trail.

History lovers can learn about Buchanan’s role during the Civil War as they explore four VA Civil War Trail Markers known as the Hunter’s Raid Trail.

In the late 1800’s, Buchanan became a stopping point for travelers on the newly completed Shenandoah Valley Railroad (Norfolk Southern) and the Chesapeake & Ohio Railroad (CSX). Tourist boarded carriages at the depots traveling to the Town’s many hotels and businesses. With the 1900’s advent of the auto, downtown’s businesses adapted once more to serve a wider distribution of customers. Travelers stopped to shop, dine and take in a “picture show” at the Theatre. Since the arrival of the I-81, Buchanan has become a popular stopping point for tourists traveling along I-81.

The Story of KC Collections Kristel Clark, owner of KC Collections, was recently asked about her growing business in Buchanan, VA. She has opened THREE Home Furnishings and Home Décor stores on Main Street - two of them opened downtown in early 2019.

On February 15, 2019, KC Collections II opened at 19762 Main Street. KC Collections II offers additional Amish furniture, Friendship Upholstery Furniture, a large selection of area rugs, and a different variety of home décor.

Can you tell us about your professional background and how you became familiar with Buchanan? I drove through Buchanan, VA frequently in route to Roanoke College.

I always appreciated the beauty of the quaint town nestled in the gateway to the Shenandoah Valley. Later, I continued my education with a master’s degree from Virginia Tech and made Southwest Roanoke County my home. Along the way, I opened a country home accents shop, Miss-Ellaneous, with my mother in Fairfield, VA in 2005. Buchanan is situated between Fairfield & Roanoke. My trips continued to take me through this historic little town. Over more than two decades of passing through Buchanan, I saw an increasing number of vacant storefronts which saddened me. As I made the decision in 2014 to expand to a larger business, it seemed as though I was drawn back to Buchanan. I saw great potential to help revitalize the town, provide jobs, and bring people to the town. In October 2014, KC Collections, the original store, became a reality.

What do you carry at KC Collections and how did you arrive at having three stores which comprise 17,000 square feet in the small town of Buchanan, VA with a small population? KC Collections is an independent retailer which carries a large selection of quality, handcrafted Amish furniture and home décor items. We bring the furniture “from the Amish farms, through our hands, to your home”. Within one year of being open, we were out of room. As I listened to my customers’ needs, expansion of the business had to happen. We searched for the next three years. Finally, in late August 2018, several business deals were finalized that would allow expansion to downtown Buchanan and help us continue our efforts to revitalize the town.

What makes the customer buying experience unique and draws people from hours away to shop your stores? At the three KC stores, our goal is to provide exceptional customer service. For customers who come to visit us, we strive to personally greet every customer and offer a relaxed environment during their time with us. For customers who reach out by phone or email, the goal is to provide as much assistance as possible because we know time is very valuable and sometimes, it is good to gather a little information before getting in the vehicle to travel. Whether we are helping our customers with furniture or other home accents, our focus is providing thoughtful assistance to them and not on “making the sale”.

You mentioned that you wanted customers to have a relaxed environment. What is done in store to provide this comfortable atmosphere?

We do not have commission-based team members. Therefore, we can really help the customer without being pushy or aggressive. We want customers to come to our stores and feel good during and after their visit whether that results in a sales transaction or not. For us, it is not all about a ringing register.

We offer everyday low prices without the typical furniture store markup. Our furniture does not go on sale because our prices are already “sale prices”. Customers are not forced into buying sets. They can buy one piece at a time and we can always look up the color/stain combination of their last purchase. All furniture is individually everyday low priced.

Full of energy that keeps her working into retirement, Diane Di Palma, who along with her husband Joe runs The Best Place Antiques and The Back Door Market, is running a business that aspires to fulfill its name. She’s selective about which items merit a space in her store because she knows that her customers expect quality. With over 30 years of finding treasures among trinkets, Diane still strives to uphold that reputation.

Back in Buchanan

Diane has built The Best Place from a lifelong love of antiquing. As a child, she accompanied her parents to auctions hunting for glass and other treasures. When starting her own family, she re-entered the world of antiques by setting up her own booth selling antique glass and country finds.

“It was something I could do with my young daughter,” Diane explained.

Moving to Virginia, she opened Eagle’s Wings Antiques in Buchanan. She kept it open for about ten years. Now, with Joe retired, both Di Palmas are in business with The Best Place Antiques.

“I’ve always loved this old building with its high tin ceilings and wood floors. Since it’s right in the center of downtown, it seemed like the perfect spot,” explains Diane.

The beautiful building is suited to the “two businesses in one” it houses. At Main Street level, you’ll find The Best Place Antiques, with various antique vendors. While they carry a strong variety, they’re best known for glassware, jewelry, primitives and country-style decor.

The lower level, known as The Back Door Market, offers, “a rather eclectic mix of products, everything from eggs and sunflower seeds to Virginia-made crafts, vintage finds, and gifts.”

Diane and her husband are excited to participate in the revitalized downtown, which often draws tourists off the highway.

“There is so much here — right on the edge of the James River and set in the mountains,” says Diane. “I have always been a small town girl. I love living where I can walk to work.”

Buchanan Swinging Bridge additional five cents for each horse, mule or oxen and five cents for each wagon.

On June 13, 1864 the covered bridge was burned by Confederate General McCausland in an effort to prevent Federal troops from crossing the James River on their way to Lynchburg. The bridge was rebuilt following the war but washed away in a flood of 1877. At this time, the R&A

In 1999 the Buchanan Swinging Bridge was recognized as a a contributing structure to the Town of Buchanan National Register Historic District.

The Buchanan Swinging Bridge is 366 feet long, 57.5 feet tall and the only one of its type to cross the James River.

Portions of the bridge date back to 1851 and have witnessed Hunter’s Civil War Raid, the rerouting of U.S. Route 11, and numerous floods.

The original stone piers rising from the James River were constructed in 1851 for the Buchanan Turnpike Company’s Wood Covered Toll Bridge. Toll for every person to pass through this wood covered bridge was five cents with an 12

Railroad Company rebuilt a toll free covered bridge. In 1897 this wood covered bridge was replaced with a steel bridge that remained in use until 1938.

In July of 1937 construction of the current concrete James River Bridge on Main Street was started with an agreement with the Town under Mayor C. W. Blount to maintain pedestrian access to Pattonsburg via the swinging bridge. On July 4, 1938, the bridge was dedicated following a presentation by Governor E. Lee Trinkle. Since 1851, portions of the Buchanan Swinging Bridge have played a critical role in the Town of Buchanan’s history while providing a scenic crossing of the James River.

The Witt Stop – Already Part of the Town by Danielle Verderame On Main Street in Downtown Buchanan, The Witt Stop will make you pump your brakes. The classic blue and red sign in retro fonts links the past to present. Although the store is relatively new (since the Fall of ‘18), the business feels like a longstanding piece of the town.

As a General Store, The Witt Stop offers produce, beer, wine, livestock feed, and dry goods. Also, they run a kitchen where you can grab a bite. At the shiny, industrial-style counter, you’ll find fresh muffins, cheesecake, croissants, and fruit alongside menus listing hot lunches like chili dogs or BBQ sandwiches.

The space looks both youthful and inviting with black walls, wooden tables, old-fashioned produce bins, and galvanized steel counter stools. Bright red tulips add a pop of color while farmhouse-style decor echoes the local charm.

With its fresh and simple interior, a variety of visitors feel comfortable.

Daytime customers range from antique-shopping tourists to local construction workers on break. In the evenings, they host events such as wine tastings and fundraisers for local groups.

“It’s a lot of different things under one roof,” explains Spring Witt, co-owner with her husband Chris. She laughs, “That was kind of the point.”

When you ask the Witts how the idea for The Witt Stop started, they trace the story back to Chris’s retirement from the Marines. After serving for a decade, they decided to settle in Chris’s hometown of Buchanan. After attending a few town hall meetings, Chris and Spring started compiling a list of all the functions the townspeople wanted.

Harry Gleason, Revitalization and Events Coordinator for Buchanan, recalls, “Chris and Spring have learned first-hand what customers from D&J Produce liked. They retained those products and services, introduced a fresh new look and added new products and services.”

Many people thought a place for fresh produce would be nice, because the nearest grocery store is outside of the town.

Some mentioned a spot for a quick breakfast or lunch. Others talked about quick access to convenience items like coffee, tobacco products, and soft drinks. Spring remembers, “It felt like we could create a place that served a lot of those needs.”

While they originally considered other locations, they jumped at the opportunity to purchase the former building of D&J Produce.

Since opening at 19386 Main Street, the response has been unexpectedly warm. Once word got out that they were serving 14

Ima Jean Crawford’s famous chili, they sold about 2000 hotdogs within the first few weeks. It’s just one of the many ways that The Witt Stop is honoring the town’s sense of community.

“When Ima Jean offered to teach me her recipe, I was so excited,” Spring recalls.

When asked about this unique practice, Gleason explained, “Buchanan is fortunate in that when some of our business owners have retired, as a goodwill gesture to the new owners and their loyal customers, they pass on their trademark secrets and recipes. As a result of this practice, everyone is a winner.”

Passing down the recipe was more than just a business opportunity. Keeping the recipe active meant keeping a part of the town’s past in the present.

Another link between the past and present is Chris’ high school wrestling connection. He was drawn back to his alma mater as an assistant coach for the James River High School wrestling team. The Witts talk about the students like they are family. In particular, Caleb Shipwash, known for his recent regional championship win, has become a significant part of their lives.

He works at their store, which along with wrestling, has given him a skill set and identity that forces people to look beyond his autism diagnosis. In an interview with WSLS 10, Caleb’s father, James Eubank, explained that Caleb struggled with being bullied and finding his place in the world.

However, to hear Spring Witt talk about Caleb, you know he has become a treasured part of their lives, of The Witt Stop’s culture, and of the local community.

Whether on an individual level or a community scale, the Witts see their business as a way to give back. It is not just a place go to work. Just going to work doesn’t get Chris and Spring up at 4:00 a.m. to make fresh muffins. Spring smiles, saying, “Our hearts are in this place.”

Limestone Park Planning Another Great Summer!

Limestone Park is located along the beautiful James River on the southern side of the Town of Buchanan. Built in the late 1970’s as part of the former James River Limestone Corporation, the park was given to Mill Creek Baptist Church when the limestone business was sold. Mill Creek Baptist Church operated the park through 2016.

The park is currently owned and operated by Limestone Park Ministries, Inc., a Christian non-profit organization that seeks to provide rest and relaxation in an environment that promotes Christ and Christ-like values.

Memberships are required, and anyone can join. A pool membership includes use of the pool, tennis and pickle ball courts, playground and exterior activities during regular business hours. The pool is open Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.

Limestone Camp is held this July 8-12 for children who were in Kindergarten through 5th grade during the 2018- ‘19 school year.

There is no fee to attend the camp; however, donations are gladly accepted. Lunch is provided and children will be able to use the pool, have a time of Bible instruction, crafts and other recreational activities.

Women’s Bible Study will be held on Friday mornings before the park opens at 9 a.m. It is open to members and non-members.

The park’s pavilion is available to rent for family reunions, birthday parties, church picnics, etc. and includes the use of a gas grill.

There are generally three-night swims held throughout the summer beginning at 8:30 p.m. Those dates will be set after the park opens for the 2019 season. The cost for night swims is $3.00 for non-members and $1.00 for members.

Limestone Park has a swim team that will start practicing in mid-May and is always seeking new members. Swimming lessons are available throughout the summer.

2019 Season Pool hours will be: Mon. – Tues. 10 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.; Wed. 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; Thurs.-Sat. 10 a.m. - 8:30 p.m.

Sun. 1 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.

2019 Membership Rates: Family Membership - $325 (those living in the same household); Couple Membership - $275; Senior Couple Membership - $250 (Age 60 and older); Senior Single Membership - $150 (age 60 and older) Pickleball/Tennis Only $75 (April - October; you will receive a code to enter the gate) Exterior Park use for River Access/Parking/Walking/Picnic $50 (April 2019-March 2020). A $60 discount is applied to pool memberships paid by May 10, 2019.

Wilson Warehouse – Community House

B

uchanan’s best known Civil War Era structure is the Wilson Warehouse/Community House located at 421 Lowe Street.

Completed in 1839 for John S. Wilson as a combined store, warehouse and private residence, the building

remained in the family for almost a century. In 1938 the structure was purchased

by Oscar C. Huffman who donated to building to the Buchanan Town Improvement Society to be preserved as an historic landmark available to the public for gatherings such as weddings, anniversary parties, concerts and public meetings.

The Wilson Company was the chief shipper and receiver of goods during “Canal Days” when Buchanan acted as the western terminus of the James River & Kanawha Canal.

In the store room, above the 1839 piano forte, is a copy of Edward Beyer’s oil painting of the Town. The original painting was owned by the Wilson family and is owned by the Town Improvement Society today.

After the flood of 1985, the painting was restored and moved to the Bank of Botetourt for display. The portrait in the dining room shows the Wilson’s Children Charles

When the Civil War Came to Buchanan Buchanan invites you to explore some less familiar sites associated with America’s greatest drama, the Civil War. Four of these Buchanan landmarks are marked by Civil War Trail markers, two may be found on Lowe Street and two on Main Street. Each marker narrates the rich story of those who experienced triumph and tragedy during the war and its impact on our rural community. During the Civil War, the Town of Buchanan served as an important Confederate supply depot for shipment of agricultural produce and pig iron to Richmond via the James River and Kanawha Canal. Buchanan Farmers provided the Confederate quartermaster with beef, cotton, yarn and corn.

The Zimmerman house featured in Edward Beyer’s 1855 painting of the Town and still stands today on First Street.

Buchanan also provided troops for the Confederate war effort, most notably for the Botetourt Artillery, a unit which distinguished itself in the defense of Vicksburg. John W. Johnston headed the Botetourt Artillery in January 1863. Buchanan banker William Douthat’s sons Henry and William served as Second Lieutenants in the Botetourt Artillery. William Douthat Died in the defense of Vicksburg in May 1863 and was succeeded by Frances Obenchain, son of merchant Thomas Obenchain. Enlisted men from Buchanan in the Botetourt Artillery included Oliver Haney, son of Hotel Botetourt keeper Jacob Haney; Ferdinand Woltz, son of tailor William Woltz; and J. Zimmerman, son of saddler John Zimmerman.

1864 on his ill-fated raid in Lynchburg. The following day Confederate General J.D. Imboden reported that Hunter had driven Confederate troops under McCausland’s command out of Buchanan. Personal letters of the era also tell of the devastation to Buchanan caused by the war including the burning of Col. John Anderson’s home known as Mount Joy, the three day Federal occupation of Oak Hill, the Anchorage, the Presbyterian Manse as well as other private homes and offices throughout Town. The battle flag of the Botetourt Artillery was said to have been made from the wedding dress of Cassandra Anderson, owner of Mount Joy. The Buchanan Theatre almost twenty years.

In 1999 Dale and Gloria Carter purchased the Buchanan Theatre and began renovations. In this same year the Buchanan Theatre was designated as a contributing structure to the Town’s National Register Historic District.

What’s old is new again. With a new, state of the art digital projection system, the Buchanan Theatre is welcoming hundreds of visitors each week. Patrons enjoy the latest movies, live concerts as well as home grown talent featured during the Annual Buchanan Elementary School Programs and Botetourt County 4H Talent Shows.

Original builder and owner Elmer Shank opened his theater by 1917 using the name of the “Star Theater.” By 1930 Shank changed the name of his popular movie house to the “Buchanan Theatre.”

The Buchanan Theatre remained in continuous operation until November 5, 1985 when owner Wayne Thompson had to close the Theatre due to the flooding of the James River. The Theatre remained closed for 34

By fall of 2001 work was complete and a 501 c 3 nonprofit organization known as Standing Room Only was formed to operate the Theatre. On November 1, 2001 the Buchanan Theatre reopened its doors to a packed house premiering The Majestic.

Today, the Buchanan Theatre looks almost as it did sixty years ago with a blend of the old Vaudeville stage, beautiful Edwardian metal ceilings and the 1950’s neon marquee and deco style concession stand and popcorn machine.

The once icon of modernity neon sign is now a beloved vintage artifact. Each Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday patrons are greeted by the familiar hum of the red and green neon as the scent of buttered popcorn drifts through the air. Patrons line up at the wooden and glass ticket booth to purchase tickets for the latest show much as they did a century ago.

Today, the Buchanan Theatre offers the old time experience patrons enjoyed before the arrival of multiplexes. Customers are greeted as they enter the doors and welcomed to enjoy a journey through time and distance. The streamline curves of the concession stand, the ornamental popcorn machine and beautiful pressed metal ceilings transport guests to the early days when theater goers dreamed of other lands.

Since reopening, the Buchanan Theatre has been honored by City Magazine with their “Best of the City” Award and recognized as “Best Place to See a Film 2004.” Other awards include the Theatre being one of the venues for the Roanoke Valley Film Festival 2005 & 2006, venue for the Blue Ridge Film & Music Festival in 2012 and winner of the 2008 “Heart of the City Award” given by the Valley Conservation Council and in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 & 2016 voted by readers of the Roanoke Times Botetourt View as Best Place to Hear Local Music, and, Best Place For A First Date.

The Trail The Jackson and Cowpasture Rivers converge in northern Botetourt to form Virginia’s greatest river, the James River.

These headwaters provide some of the finest canoeing and freshwater fishing available in Virginia. The Virginia General Assembly recently passed Senate Bill 1196 and House Bill 1454, patroned by Senator Creigh Deeds and Delegate Terry Austin respectively. The bills extend the Scenic River designation on the Upper James River from 14 miles to 59 miles. This bill has been signed into law by the governor.

Along 64 miles of the Upper James River in Botetourt and Rockbridge Counties and 10 miles of the Maury River, you can get up close and personal with the Allegheny and Blue Ridge Mountains. You’ll experience the unspoiled beauty of the river as you paddle through scenic valleys and past rolling farmland while keeping a watchful eye out for native wildlife. Some Class I and Class II rapids along your journey will make it a fun day for all members of the family by canoe, kayak or tube.

Fishing The Upper James River, from its headwaters in Botetourt County through Rockbridge County provide some of the finest freshwater fishing available in Virginia. Adjacent to the James River are several stocked trout streams in some of the Blue Ridge Mountain’s most scenic settings. Anglers visit from all across the country to fish the region.

The James River offers a wide range of angling opportunities and settings. Smallmouth bass are the dominant game species, but spotted and large mouth bass can also be caught. Other species are also plentiful in the James River, including channel catfish, flathead catfish, and various sunfish species (redbreast, bluegill, and rock bass).

Three-year classes of trout have been established in the Roaring Run stream and fish up to 16 inches in size are available for anglers. Rainbow trout predominate in North Creek, although brook trout are present as well. Adult trout will range from 7-12 inches. Adjacent to North Creek is Jennings Creek, a Heritage Trout Day stocked stream. At several locations along Jennings Creek, people can drive right up to the side of the stream, find trout water, and hopefully even catch a fish.

Plan A Trip When you hear the river calling, head to the Upper James River Water Trail. Perhaps your perfect day on the river is a carefree float in a tube and chatting with friends on a hot summer day. Maybe you would rather be casting a fly in search of a trophy catch. For others, it means packing a lunch and enjoying some undisturbed time with the whole family surrounded by the beauty of the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Chances are, a portion of the Upper James has exactly what you’re looking for. If you’re bringing your own canoe or kayak, there are numerous public access points with free parking.
