As of March 31, 2018, we had assisted landowners with the conservation of 18,458 acres of productive land in Washington and Rensselaer counties.

Forever Farmland Campaign protecting 24,000 acres by the end of 2020 As with any complex real estate transaction, there are many costs involved in completing a conservation easement.

Most state and federal grant programs cover only a portion of the expense. Landowners donating an easement rarely can afford all of the transaction and stewardship costs.

Philanthropic supporters are necessary, having an important, direct and lasting impact on the conservation continuum.

That’s why in 2016 ASA launched a Forever Farmland Campaign with the goal of raising $9.4 million to conserve a total of 24,000 acres by 2020. The good news?

As of March 31, 2018, we already raised 90 percent of the $9.4 million goal thanks to grants from New York State and private foundations, as well as donations from individuals!

This funding is needed to match state and federal funding as well as to cover project transaction and stewardship costs to incentivize conservation.

Please consider supporting ASA’s Forever Farmland Campaign. With each farm we protect, the list of tangible impacts goes on and on – a short-term investment with a long-term gain.

Land Conservation Fuller Acres, Fort Ann Conserving for future farmers

Fort Ann Battlefield, Fort Ann A victory for historians & conservationists

Thanks to your help, ASA conserved this 308-acre farm that has been a dairy and maple syrup operation for more than 60 years. Douglas Fuller worked with ASA to apply for state funding. The transaction closed on his daughter Olivia’s 25th birthday in June. Fuller Acres will now be farmland forever. “I think the farmers who sold my land to me would be happy I did it,” Douglas says.

Because of your support, ASA teamed up with the Civil War Trust and the Town of Fort Ann to protect the Fort Ann Battlefield property, a 160-acre property that was previously slated for mining. Sometimes “it takes an army” to get something done. In this case it took a war and many people dedicated to remembering the importance of it.

Now it’s Olivia’s turn to farm with her partner, Thomas, who has worked on the farm since the two were in high school. The couple plans to be the next generation to farm the land, with ideas to diversify into other types of livestock and crops that thrive on the land’s natural offerings. Olivia states, “It’s comforting to know that the land will always be here for us, and for many farmers to come.”

The Civil War Trust (recently renamed The American Battlefield Trust) purchased land where most of the Battle of Fort Anne took place. According to some historians, the Battle of Fort Anne delayed the British and invigorated the Americans, thereby helping to win at the critical Battle of Saratoga in the fall of 1777. The Civil War Trust donated a conservation easement to ASA before transferring the land to the town of Fort Ann. ASA was pleased to be a conduit to help the community protect something that was important to them. The property will have public access and trails in the future.

We thank Fort Ann Town Supervisor Richie Moore, The American Battlefield Trust, the local American Legion and others who never gave up on protecting this important piece of history for future generations.

Funding for this project was provided by New York State through the Hudson Valley Agricultural Enhancement Program and administered by the Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Funding to help acquire the property was awarded to the Town of Fort Ann through a grant from the American Battlefield Protection Program (a program through the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund).

protecting farmland and forests forever Thomas Organic Dairy, Easton Positioning for the next generation Your generosity helped ASA conserve Thomas Organic Dairy Farm, which has a high percentage of very productive soils and, as a bonus, offers a stunning view for commuters along Route 40.

Cody Thomas, alongside his parents Lloyd and Tammy Thomas, operates the 169-acre farm. In the early 2000s when most dairy farms started getting bigger, Tammy suggested a different direction by proposing a switch to organic. By 2006, the Thomases were certified organic and currently sell their milk to Organic Valley. Switching to organic allowed the Thomases to reap the benefits of staying small. Now that the farm is conserved, Cody will be in a better position to take over when his parents retire.

Funding for this project was provided by New York State through the Hudson Valley Agricultural Enhancement Program administered by the Department of Agriculture and Markets.

Landview Farms, White Creek Planning for the future Thanks to your assistance, ASA was able to work with the owners of Landview Farms to protect 640 acres of important farmland. Landview Farms, based in the town of White Creek, is more than a dairy farm and scenic landscapes. It’s a rural business that employs 30 people and works many acres of rented ground to keep their cows happy, healthy and fed. Landview Farms is a prime example of the economic engine that agriculture plays in our region. They conserved not only their 220acre home farm, which forms their base of operations, but also another 420 acres of support land nearby that connected to four other ASA conserved properties.

Altogether, this constitutes a 1,000-acre corridor of protected land.

For the team at Landview, conserving the land was a big decision. The economic climate for dairy is tough. Milk prices have plunged. Conserving the land will not only ensure the land is protected for generations to come, but it will also ease the financial stress on these farmers during these uncertain times.

Stewardship As the number of protected properties grows, so does ASA’s responsibility to steward these conserved properties. In 2017-2018 ASA’s stewardship team worked with landowners to conduct site visits to all 116 conserved properties. We walked 144 miles to make sure that we are keeping our promise to protect these working lands forever. This is equivalent to walking up the Empire State Building ten times or around the Saratoga Battlefield loop 12 times!

Having an Easement Steward to cultivate and maintain good relationships with our easement landowners is a key strategy in upholding the conservation easement terms and minimizing the number and severity of easement violations.

As part of our ongoing landowner relationship building efforts, ASA offers workshops geared toward our easement landowners on topics such as pond, forest and stream bank management and chain saw safety training.

Accreditation Renewal The land trust accreditation program recognizes land conservation organizations that meet national quality standards for protecting important natural places and working lands forever. ASA was first accredited in 2013 and is pleased to report that we have applied for renewal after five years.

The Land Trust Accreditation Commission, an independent program of the Land Trust Alliance, conducts an extensive review of each applicant’s policies and programs. “Accreditation is more than compliance and paperwork. It is ASA’s commitment to the communities we serve that we are here for the long haul. We adhere to best practices and commit to longterm stewardship of the conservation easements we hold for the benefit of the public,” explained Associate Director Renee Bouplon. Currently, 411 land trusts are accredited in the U.S. out of more than 1,700 land trusts nationwide.

Outreach ASA continues to offer a little something for everyone through our outreach and educational programs for children, families and landowners. Here are some highlights from our outreach activities this past year:

Farm-to-Fork

Thirty children from the Troy Boys & Girls Club spent a day with Stephanie Bartzick at the conserved Laughing Earth Farm in Brunswick in spring 2017.

Chickens were held, pigs got petted, seeds were planted, seedlings were transplanted and garden snacks were enjoyed by all. Throughout the spring and summer, ASA and Stephanie visited the Club for cooking demos, including preparing a five-course meal picked fresh from the farm. Late in the summer, the kids and their families were invited back to the farm for tours, a hay ride and the chance to pick flowers and veggies that they planted in the spring.

Game of Logging

ASA teamed up with Northeast Woodland Training and the Washington County Soils and Water Conservation District to offer all four levels of the Game of Logging chainsaw safety training. Anyone using a chainsaw, from homeowners to professionals, can benefit from the Game of Logging training. This year we were again able to offer scholarships thanks to a generous anonymous donor. Recipients of the scholarships included high school, college students, local farmers and farm employees.

Hudson Valley Farmlink Network

ASA continued to partner with the Hudson Valley Farmlink Network to connect farmers looking for land with landowners interested in selling or leasing farmland. This past year we provided direct assistance to more than 50 farm seekers, farmers and landowners. We also provided stipends for legal and financial advice to farmers who participated in estate planning trainings.

Forever Farmland Supper & Landscapes for Landsake

Farm Photography for Kids

Our popular Farm Photography for Kids reached 50 children in 2017 during summer programs at the Historic Salem Community Courthouse and the Greenwich Youth Center. The new four-day format offered photography instructions by professional photographers and visits to farms. The kids’ photos were displayed at the Washington County and Schaghticoke fairs as well as the Salem Courthouse.

Thank you to the photographers and farms who opened up their gates for us.

2017’s Forever Farmland Supper at the conserved Hand Melon Farm drew an enthusiastic gathering of conservationists from near and far. The Chef’s Consortium delighted 350 guests with a sumptuous array of deliciously prepared farm fresh foods to honor those families who made a gift to our community by conserving their land ASA also celebrated our 16th annual Landscapes for Landsake Art Sale & Exhibition in October 2017. This premier art show raises awareness about the importance of protecting our area’s valuable farmland. It was our most successful event ever, with 58 artists and more than 2,500 visitors generating nearly $100,000 in sales. We are grateful for everyone’s contributions from the artists and volunteers to all who support ASA through the purchase of art.

Financial Summary When you invest in ASA, your contribution directly supports our efforts to protect farm and forestland, connect people to the land and promote farming in our region. Only 8.9 percent of our expenses go towards management and fundraising.

Thanks to you, productive farm soils have been conserved along with woodlands, wildlife habitat, scenic views and the many other benefits farms provide. Through our outreach programs, people of all ages are able to visit local farms and make a connection to the farmers and land that feed them. We couldn’t do this work without your generous support!

And thanks to generous leadership gifts to the Forever Farmland Campaign in 2017-18, ASA is well on its way to protecting 24,000 acres by 2020.

New Jersey Couple Gifts Real Estate in Memory of Dad

Last fall, Justine (LeBarron) Larado and her husband David approached ASA about gifting their house lot in Shallotte, North Carolina. ASA’s Gift of Real Estate Program “was an ideal program that suited our needs,” explained Justine. “We had real estate that we wanted to part with, didn’t want the hassle of selling ourselves, and knew was going to a cause that was near and dear to my father.” Justine’s dad, Loren LeBarron, was a Cambridge farmer who believed deeply in conservation. He and his wife Marilyn protected their family’s farm in 2006. This gift is in memory of Loren. Thank you, Justine and David!
