World Challenge – Sub-Saharan Africa June 2018 In June 2018, two groups of thirty-six pupils and four teachers from Aberdeen Grammar School embarked on a month-long World Challenge expedition to SubSaharan Africa. The expedition began as soon as our plane touched down in Durban, South Africa, where we boarded a bus which brought us to the border of the kingdom of Lesotho. For our acclimatisation phase, we horse trekked through the breath-taking mountains of Lesotho into the rural village of Sehlabathebe, where Group 1 set up camp for the next six days and Group 2 headed back out to the border to travel to Swaziland for their first trek. Both groups completed two treks during their month away. The first was the Giant’s Cup Trail in South Africa, a five-day, self-sufficient trek through the Drakensberg Mountains. Walking around 50 km in total, the trail was home to some of the most amazing scenery we saw during our stay in South Africa. Each night we stayed in mountain huts with basic facilities and cooked all our own meals with the food we carried in our back-packs. The second trek of the trip was through the Ngwempisi Gorge in Swaziland. This time we were led by two local porters. This presented us a great opportunity to learn more about the country we were visiting as they told us all about their life in Swaziland. The trekking phase 23
