Aberdeen Grammar School Magazine Thursday 27th June saw pupils from the School experiencing the rare summer weather of Aberdeen at the Rubislaw Playing Field for their annual sports day. It was a very eventful and successful day with everyone taking part to commemorate the strong school spirit. Many pupils made their way to the Field early in the morning, dressed in their school PE kit, eager to compete in the heats and finals as well as in the House team events taking place later that day. Weeks of preparation led up to this day and the expectation for everything to run smoothly was felt in the air. During the heats, inexhaustible pressure was appreciated by the competitors as they jumped into the sand, threw a heavy ball or ran on a course a certain distance. All triumphed and many victorious individuals went on to compete in the finals. Times were beaten and new records were made under the warm sun. At the same time, while heats and finals went on at the Field, some pupils were at school getting ready to cheer on their classmates. The whole school reunited at the field in the early afternoon to allow pupils and members of staff to cheer on the resilient competitors during the last of the finals and for the long awaited House team relay and tug of war. Pupils from each year group represented their Houses in a relay race and a team of around seven, consisting of pupils and teachers, represented their House in the tug of war. Preparations for relay and tug of war teams were made by the school’s House Captains throughout the week leading up to this momentous day. As pupils ran for their House, the rest of the school cheered them on covered in face paints, glitter and hairspray in the colours of their House – Melvin glimmered in green, Byron bubbled in blue and Keith and Dun done it in red. It was a spectacular sight to see with immensely proficient runners being encouraged by colour covered peers and staff. As the relays ended, with Byron House in the lead, cheer upon cheer was received by the runners as the crowd went wild. Within just minutes after the relays, the crowd of pupils and staff gathered to face a rope which laid on the ground ready to be put under immense pressure in a few moments. Two House teams, Melvin and Byron, were up first. A strong battle was fought and Melvin got the first win. Next up was Byron and Keith and Dun, which was a tough one but Byron pulled through and won the round. Finally it was Melvin again with Keith and Dun and tensions rose from the crowd as they stood there nervously contemplating which house would win. Melvin was once again victorious in the tug of war and everyone cheered. Thus, the tug of war concluded yet another fabulous Grammar Games. Nadha Murssith S6
Music The Music Department held its first concert of the session on 10th October. The concert included a variety of groups and musical genres, which made for an interesting and enjoyable evening. The School’s award-winning Concert Band, under its director Alan MacDonald, opened the concert with three pieces – ‘Kinesis’ by M. Sweeney, an arrangement of ‘Loch Lomond’ and ‘Shaker Dance’ by J. Zdechlik. This was followed by the Junior Choir, directed by Miss Johnston, performing ‘Feel it Still’ arranged by M. Brymer.
