JCB CUSTOMER’S JOY AS VINTAGE MACHINE RESTORED TO FORMER GLORY

One of JCB’s longest-standing customers has unwrapped a unique present - vintage loader restored to former glory to mark approaching anniversary.

O

ne of JCB’s longeststanding customers has unwrapped a unique present – a vintage backhoe loader restored to its former glory to mark the digger maker’s approaching 75th anniversary. Lincolnshire-based Eric Carnaby & Son has been a customer since 1959 and over the following six decades has bought more than 150 JCB machines. Now JCB has said thank you to the firm for its loyalty by restoring the Carnaby family’s cherished 1964 JCB 1 backhoe. The project was kept a closely guarded secret until George Bamford - grandson of JCB Founder Joseph Cyril Bamford CBE – sprung the restoration surprise during a visit to the company’s base in Immingham, near Grimsby, to collect the machine. Now

CAPTION: Before and after.....the JCB 1 backhoe which has undergone a stunning restoration by a team at JCB six months later the backhoe has been handed back to the company after a team at JCB’s World HQ in Rocester, Staffordshire spent hundreds of hours lovingly restoring it.

in 1946, the plant hire and road haulage firm is now run by father-and-son team Roland Carnaby Senior and Roland Carnaby Junior. The company’s first JCB purchase was a JCB 4 backhoe in 1959 Eric Carnaby & Son Director and it was the JCB backhoe Roland Carnaby Junior said: loader which formed the “My family and I are over the backbone of the Eric Carnaby moon with the restoration. & Son fleet for many years Our JCB 1 is precious to us to come – with up to 12 in and we’ve been meaning operation during the 1970s to restore it for some time, and 1980s. The company’s but you know how it is – a most recent purchase was business to run, and all that!” the latest X Series excavator. The two family businesses George Bamford said: “It has have been strongly been amazing to see an old intertwined throughout the machine brought back to life 61-year period, with 95% by the JCB team. It looks just of the Eric Carnaby & Son as it would have done on the fleet now made up of JCB day it came off the production equipment. JCB marks its line in 1964.” 75th birthday on October 23. FARMGEM: ‘FANTASTIC UK DEALER SUPPORT’

FarmGEM - formed in 2009, the growth of the business and machine portfolio has been astounding

T

he FarmGEM Company was formed in July 2009 and the growth of the business and machine portfolio has been astounding. This is down to several key factors, fantastic UK dealer support, that the GEM Sprayers brand is still held in a very high regard by many growers and the fact that FarmGEM are producing equally strong and reliable machines and backing that up with a three-year construction warranty. The company is headed up by Terry Fixter, Managing Director with Cliff Buck looking after UK Sales, several other ex-GEM staff also involved over the years,

bringing easily over one hundred years of combined crop sprayer experience to the company. The accounts office is in Southwell, Nottinghamshire with tractor mounted and trailed machines manufactured in our factory in Veria, Greece. Self-propelled machines are manufactured in Lincolnshire UK. The fact that the machines are manufactured in Europe brings several advantages, the main one being the access to easily deliver our machines into many markets other than the UK and Ireland.

We have appointed dealers and delivered machines into Greece, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, New Zealand and Bulgaria and even have machines working in the Philippines and The Democratic Republic of the Congo. That said the UK and Irish markets remain key and as with all other markets we have a sole importer who has been able to establish a comprehensive dealer network throughout the UK to supply and support FarmGEM sprayers.

NEW: NOVADISC 732, 812, 902 MOWER COMBINATIONS

NovaDisc mower combinations feature the very latest developments. These machines are packed with technical requirements

N

OVADISC mower combinations feature the very latest developments. These machines are packed with technical refinements and have an eye-catching appearance. Smooth running, strength, ground tracking and an extended service life are just some of the outstanding details. The NOVADISC 732, 812, 902 mower combinations are available with working widths of 7.24 m, 8.09 and 8.92 m. These lightweights can be used with smaller tractors from as little as 85 hp. Because of their low weight, the NOVADISCs are easy to run. This saves fuel. When used with a 3.04 m wide front mower, the NOVADISC has an impressive overlap of 52 cm on each side. This means it can mow without feathering on steep ground and while cornering. CONSERVING THE SOIL AND YOUR FORAGE Two suspension springs on each cutter bar ensure uniform weight alleviation of the entire mower. A new feature on NOVDISC mower combinations is that the pressure acting on the ground can be adjusted in three stages without the need for tools. The unique kinematics ensure that the cutter bar applies equal pressure to the ground over its entire width.

6 | AgriNews

This provides the machine with maximum protection and makes it easy to run. The NOVADISC lifting technology also conserves the sward. That is because the mower is lowered so that the outer end of the cutter bar contacts the ground first. Likewise, at the headland, the inner end is lifted first. The wide + 22/- 30 degree arc of movement enables easy mowing on rough ground and embankments. When the safety interlock is raised, mowing at up to + 45 degrees is permitted for a short time. FOR A LONG LIFE The cutter bar is protected against twisting because it is suspended at both ends. This relieves the stress on the gears and bearings. As a result, they run very smoothly and have a long service life. The risk of a collision with obstacles has also been taken into consideration. The collision safety device on either side permits the units to swing through approx. 12 degrees. If the device is triggered you just need to reverse a short way to engage the mower unit again. This effectively prevents damage to the mower unit. The compact driveline and drive belt tension regulated by a back tension idler ensure robust and reliable power transmission. Convenience and safety have

top priority Each mower in the combination is lifted using a single-acting spool valve. With the optional pre-select system, only one spool valve is required. You can then choose between parallel or individual lifting. At the heart of NOVADISC mower combinations is the cutter bar, proven on thousands of mowers in the field. These cutter bars are easily accessible thanks to the folding guard that opens wide. This makes it possible to clean the machine thoroughly and change blades quickly and easily. A handy blade box provides space for replacement blades. The blade tool is kept on the machine. The PTO shafts are also easily accessible and easy to maintain. In addition, the PTO shaft greasing interval has been increased to 150 hours. A practical feature is the PTO shaft holder, which makes attachment easier and saves you time. The guard curtains are made from very tough material to reliably catch stones and dirt. This provides the best possible protection for the tractor and surroundings. The mechanical safety interlock ensures safety during transport on the road.

KUHN PLOUGH DEVELOPMENTS IMPROVE IN-FIELD EFFICIENCIES Increased operational efficiency is the new common factor in several new developments within Kuhn Farm Machinery’s Master & Plough range

I

ncreased operational efficiency is the common factor in several new developments within KUHN Farm Machinery’s Master and Multi-Leader plough ranges. MULTI-MASTER L The Multi-Master L extends the company’s Master mounted plough range, sitting between the Master 153 and 183 models. Available with 4, 5 or 6 bodies, there are both in-furrow and on-land formats suitable for tractors from 200 to 300 horsepower. On-land models can be set up to also work in-furrow. A new working width adjustment system allows furrow width to be set at 35, 40, 45 or 50cm without removing any bolts. KUHN’s patented Pro Set system allows tool-free adjustment of levelling, offset, depth and skimmers. Whilst saving time, the ability to quickly and simply maintain optimum configuration of the machine according to furrow width and conditions always ensures peak performance, thereby reducing fuel consumption and wear on the plough. Also new on the Multi-Master L is an integrated adjustable press arm that enables simultaneous furrow pressing to conserve moisture and create optimum seedbed conditions. With a reinforced

8 | AgriNews

anchor, the press arm is designed for use with the heaviest rollers on the market and is adjustable either mechanically or hydraulically from the tractor cab (as an option). The press arm is designed to allow ploughing up to the edge of the field and is suitably compact in transport to fit within the dimensions of the plough. As with other ploughs in KUHN’s Master range, the Multi-Master L is available with traction bolt or nonstop hydraulic safety. The optional Opti-Drive headstock suspension system provides additional protection of both plough and tractor when in work or in transport. MULTI-LEADER XT

versions of the plough are available, with the on-land version also able to be set up to work in-furrow. Operational efficiency, and reduced fuel use, is ensured by a new draw line correction system that optimises traction and minimises wear on the plough. As with the MultiMaster L, this plough benefits from tool-free adjustments to allow quick and simple setup, minimising down-time and increasing the performance in the field. Offset adjustment capability on the Multi-Leader XT allows the on-land version of this plough to work effectively with large tractors, up to 5.4m wide, which includes dual wheel set-ups and tracked machines. The Multi-Leader XT can also be used with a press arm and both traction bolt and non-stop hydraulic safety systems are available.

The Multi-Leader XT has been added to KUHN’s semimounted single-wheel plough range. ULTRA SHALLOW WORK WITH DISCS AND TINES Lower rainfall levels and the resulting drier conditions require farmers to rethink their work

L

ower rainfall levels and the resulting drier conditions require farmers to rethink their work, including with regard to stubble cultivation. Right after the harvest is the time for establishing a sound foundation from which the next crop can develop optimally. It is becoming more and more important to loosen the soil across the full surface, at the shallowest possible working depth, to disrupt capillary action. This helps protect the water balance and thus saves valuable moisture in the soil for subsequent crops. At the same time, the soil, including harvest residue, needs to be loosened to ensure that volunteer cereals and weed seeds emerge evenly. Conventional shallow cultivators with duck-foot shares penetrate the soil poorly, especially in dry conditions, and they wear quickly. This is where the LEMKEN Koralin 9 breaks new ground, as the soil is

10 | AgriNews

thoroughly broken up by rolling rather than rigid tools. This implement features two rows of vertically operating discs ahead of the horizontally acting tines to divide the soil and cut organic residue.

Cuts are made just ahead of the tips and sides of the DeltaCut shares. This ensures that the tine section penetrates the soil more easily and works without blockages at all times. As a result, the shares wear less quickly and have a service life that is three times as long. The 38 cm-wide DeltaCut tines are arranged symmetrically

in three rows with a 30-cm line distance and an overlap of 4.0 cm each. They are attached to the main frame via a spring-loaded overload element, which provides for the necessary horizontal and vertical stability to ensure that the shares work consistently across the full surface. At working depths of 2 to a maximum of 10 cm, the shares undercut the roots of stubble, volunteer cereals and weeds horizontally like a knife. This makes the Koralin 9 ideal for a work process of repeated, extensive cutting at a slightly increased working depth each time. Carbide-coated shares are optionally available for an even longer service life. These minimise wear costs and extend maintenance intervals during the main season. Gauge wheels on the implement control the depth of this hybrid cultivator with superior precision. The roller can therefore be replaced by a harrow with multiple rows for even more effective control of emerging volunteer cereals and weeds.

KVERNELAND: ORIGINAL PARTS NOW WITH XHD TREATMENT

A new range of tungsten carbide-tipped parts has been developed by Kverneland for use on its ploughs and power harrows

A

new range of tungsten carbide-tipped parts has been developed by Kverneland for use on its ploughs and power harrows. Called XHD Carbide, these extra heavy-duty components incorporate a new design of tungsten carbide tile, that wraps around the leading edge of parts. This corner tile design prevents the hard-wearing elements from being damaged or knocked off by hidden obstructions, when leading edges are put to work. Corner tiles complement the existing straight tile design, which is now used on flatfaces for extra protection, leaving the advanced corner tile design for use on highpressure leading edges. For ploughs, the extended range of carbide-tipped components now joins the plough point, and includes short and long landsides, shins and skimmer shares. For power harrows, extra protection comes from wrapping the leading edge of the tine with a tungsten carbide tile. “We’re extremely excited Vincent Tractors & Plant Fraddon, St Columb, Cornwall, TR9 6NA t: 01726 860332 www.vincenttractors.co.uk

MINIMUM DISTURBANCE DISC FOR U-DRILL

A

the MD disc design is one that has the ability to work as part of a conservation tillage system, or within a conventional crop establishment process. The 430mm diameter straight disc has a fluted profile around its circumference, which assists with removing surface trash, reducing the risk of hairpinning. The disc’s flutes also lightly prepare soil in a narrow 3050mm strip. Each disc also aligns perfectly with the u-drill’s CD coulters, enabling seed to be placed in the soil strip, delivering a row spacing of 16.67cm.

JOHN DEERE: DATA TRANSFER FOR MIXED FLEETS

Today’s farmers have to collect data to manage their farm, with the ISOXML it’s possible to transfer field data to the operations centre

T

oday’s farmers have to collect a large amount of data to manage their farm and for documentation requirements. With the ISOXML standard it’s possible to transfer field data from machine displays of the most popular manufacturers to the John Deere Operations Centre. In this way, John Deere is able to support customers that work with mixed equipment fleets. Data commonly recorded by farm machinery includes field borders, application rates and crop yields, with the information helping farmers to operate more efficiently, cost-effectively and sustainably. However, customers with mixed fleets have often failed to successfully transfer and merge such data into as few software solutions as possible in the office. The John Deere Operations Centre enables farmers and contractors to exchange different data formats, and there are several ways to transfer data from the machine to the Operations

WATER RESOURCES: WHY THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE FUTURE Water resources: Why they are fundamental for the future of agriculture

R

isorse idriche agricoltura Phenomena such as waves of drought and rising temperatures will become increasingly frequent in the coming years due to climate change. In different areas of the world they are already a current reality and make it increasingly challenging to engage in agricultural activities at the levels of the past. Moreover, phenomena such as population growth, urbanisation and pollution do not make the situation any easier. In this panorama, water resources become a particularly precious commodity, to be exploited carefully and more and more efficiently in order to satisfy all the uses that are made of them. Water is in fact necessary for alimentary uses, but also for industry, tourism and agriculture. Agriculture in Europe is the sector that uses the most water resources, accounting for about 40% of the resources used each year (as detailed in this article on the use of European water resources). With the ever-increasing demand for water, it is necessary to find solutions to meet the needs of people, the economy and nature. In some regions, especially during the summer months, there is not

18 | AgriNews

enough water to meet the demand of everyone. This is why organisations such as the European Union encourage a range of actions for the careful and sustainable use of water resources. Let us look at this in greater detail. How agriculture affects the use of water resources The European Environment Agency estimates that approximately one third of Europe’s territory is exposed to water stress conditions, which can become particularly severe during the summer. The greatest risk concerns the Mediterranean countries, but the problem of water scarcity is beginning to affect some regions of Great Britain and Germany. Despite significant improvements in the efficiency of water use in recent years, agriculture continues to be primarily responsible for water use. In spring, the incidence rate of this sector can reach up to 60% of European

water consumption, due to the large amount of water needed to support fruit and vegetable production. For this reason, it is expected that the cost of irrigation could increase in the coming years, especially if the forecast of reduced rainfall due to climate change should become a reality. Not to be underestimated is the fact that during the summer months another key sector such as tourism competes with agriculture for water demand.

EUROFINS AGRO UK: DELVING DEEPER INTO FORAGE

New forage analysis technology that will help farmers and nutritionists make better use of home-grown fodder

N

ew forage analysis technology that will help farmers and nutritionists make better use of homegrown fodder through more accurate and reliable evaluation is now available in the UK. Eurofins Agro UK, an agricultural materials analysis specialist, is launching a combination of laboratory testing and SCiO, a handheld device, which will enable farmers to draw on global data index figures and benchmark values to measure forage more accurately than ever before.

Our tests show the nutritional value of forage to the rumen, which is a fundamental part of creating the correct TMR,” explains Mr Robinson. By using the tests, farmers will receive the most accurate forage measurement to enable them to maximise profit and Eurofins has developed the yield by adjusting the ration to most comprehensive database the optimum level. “Weighing of forage samples to analyse a ration is one thing but and benchmark forage. understanding the exact make up of that ration is a new level The global benchmark values of precision,” says Mr and rumen character charts Robinson. are being made available to farmers in the UK for the first Data from the samples time. “Using Near-Infrared provided is analysed for dry Spectroscopy (NIRS) we dry matter content, pH levels, ME and grind forage samples and 23 other parameters. “By before analysing them. removing the moisture in the This removes any sample, we are essentially inconsistencies in the shape removing the ‘fog’ that other and density of the sample to tests cannot see through. provide the most accurate result,” says Daniel Robinson, Drying the sample leaves only Eurofins Agro UK, Managing the solid content which once Director. “The properties of the ground to a consistent 1mm forage sample are then fed thickness is exposed to the into our unique rumen infrared light to provide greater character charts that show detail than any other test the nutritional value of the on the market,” explains Mr 20 | AgriNews

This means we can identify that a sample is made up of grass or maize, or beans, and benchmark it against datasets that only include other like for like samples. The accuracy is unparalleled,” he says. All samples sent to Eurofins are saved into the company’s global database to be used for future benchmarking. The farmer receives a report that draws on this database to offer more detailed and accurate forage insight. “We have developed an unrivalled database for dried and ground analysis containing thousands of NIR-spectra generated samples. The number of data-points is far greater than those contained within the conventional databases used in the UK. By means of a mathematical model, based on a local calibration, we are able to derive a greater number of parameters for a wider range of forage types, raw materials and TMR,” says Mr Robinson. In conjunction with laboratory testing, Eurofins has also launched a new handheld testing device called SCiO.

APPROACH GUIDES LATEST ROBOTIC INNOVATIONS FOR FULLWOOD PACKO

With a greater focus on issues such as sustainability, animal welfare, and food provenance than ever before, Fullwood Packo has updated systems

W

ith a greater focus on issues such as sustainability, animal welfare, and food provenance than ever before, Fullwood Packo has made a number of firmware and machine control updates to its M2erlin automated milking system, all of which are designed to provide a more efficient, smoother and more relaxed milking environment for cows and their farmers. “With the global population expected to reach 10.5 billion people by 2067, the dairy industry will need to undertake a range of anticipated changes to ensure it is able to meet the ensuing increased demand for sustainable sources of dairy products,” explains Glenn De Buf, Product Manager at Fullwood Packo. “At Fullwood Packo, a leading international provider of integrated milking and cooling solutions, we have been working hard to dedicate more time and resources to ensure the products and services we supply can help the industry meets these demands and to ensure that our dairy farmer customers and their cows are able to produce milk safely and consistently.” A cow-first approach The latest firmware and machine control updates have increased the speed at which the M2erlin’s milking

cluster attaches to the udder, thereby making the entire milking process more efficient and pleasant for the cow: a new teat detection system – the TDS2 – makes cluster attachment more reliable, even for the most demanding or irregularly shaped udders and teats, while the nearsilent, all-electric attachment arm has also been revised for even smoother movement that is less disruptive to the cow without compromising efficacy. A revised and updated version of the M²erlinInfo app which is more intuitive and enables users to measure, monitor and maximise milking parameters in greater detail has also been launched. “A cow-first approach is the guiding philosophy for everything we do at Fullwood Packo,” Glenn continues. “Every decision or change we make to our milking systems considers the cow first. Afterall, healthier cows produce healthier milk, which means better quality and overall results for our farmers.” This focus on cow health extends to some of the M2erlin’s other new features: improvements in teat brushing and spraying has improved udder preparation for better overall hygiene – not just for individual animals, but for the herd as a whole by reducing the potential for

cross-contamination from one cow to the next: “With animal welfare a key priority on any farm, and with increased consumer and legislative focus, creating a pleasant, safe and hygienic milking environment is more important than ever,” Glenn adds. M²erlin has been praised by users for its smart features and clever use of the latest tech to refine and streamline milking operations. New and improved sensors have increased the amount of data collected during milking, with this data subsequently synchronising with the M²erlinInfo smartphone app to give users remote access to this information and to adjust any pertinent milking parameters accordingly: this includes the ability to set customisable alarms for any issues during milking or cleaning, with farmers now able to set milking benchmarks for their cows and receive alerts if they are not met. “Innovation has become a buzz word in the industry – but what does it actually mean for farmers?” asks Glenn. “At Fullwood Packo, innovation is a marathon, not a sprint and we are always examining the construction and hardware of the M²erlin, in order to make sure the equipment our customers rely on day-in, dayout remains reliable and robust while the cost of ownership stays low.

OPTIMISATION FORAGE UTILISATION BY STIMULATION RUMEN ACTIVITY Livestock producers looking to make the most of grazer forage can increase intake digestion by 10% when supplementing pastures

O

ptimise forage utilisation by stimulating rumen activity with free access supplement blocks Livestock producers looking to make the most of grazed forage can increase intake and digestion by 10 percent when supplementing pastures with a nutrient-rich Rumevite block, says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco.

into the finishing period, with supplemented cattle maintaining the 25kg weight increase and therefore finishing 28 days ahead of the control group. “When valuing liveweight gain at £2.00/kg, the margin over feed cost for supplementing grazing stock with Rumevite Cattle Booster was £137.36/ head, compared to £109.00/ head for the group that did not receive the Rumevite. The unsupplemented cattle required feed for an additional 28 days, costing an additional £36.55/ head in extra concentrate and silage costs,” explains Dr Bond.

“Supplying a balanced combination of nutrientrich ingredients, the blocks stimulate the rumen to work harder by fuelling and increasing the rumen bug population. Supplementing forage in this way results in up to a 10 percent improvement Similar results have been in forage intake and digestion,” seen in finishing lambs in a explains Dr Bond. study at Plumpton College in Sussex. Despite having a 300g Livestock performance disadvantage to the control increases group at the start of the study, lambs supplemented In multiple trials, Rumenco’s with Rumevite Quality Lamb free access supplement had a daily liveweight gain blocks show an increase in of 189g, which resulted in a forage intakes and digestion 36.7kg liveweight at 45 days which has been proven to to slaughter. The control have significant impacts on group only gained 94.3g/day, livestock performance. finishing in 83 days at 36.3kgs. In a study of 156 head of store cattle on five different farms, livestock supplemented with Rumevite Cattle Booster had a 25kg liveweight gain advantage over the course of 105 days compared to the control group. Performance advantages carried through

“Not only did supplemented lambs have greater daily liveweight gains at grass and finish 38 days sooner, but they also achieved greater carcase grades than the control group,” says Dr Bond. For producers looking to

improve ewe fertility, trials have found Rumevite Sheep Super, which contains Fish Oil, increases scanning percentages by up to 22% when fed in the eight weeks prior to tupping and then continued for an additional six weeks into the tupping period. “This increase in scanning percentages is through the reduction of barren ewes, and not due to an influx of multiples,” says Dr Bond. “The formulation helps ewes reach optimal body condition ahead of tupping, encouraging ovulation – both of which lead to more ewes holding service in the first cycle.” How to supplement Unlike concentrates, free access forage supplements allow for little and often feeding, which results in less pH variation in the rumen. Because stock can have 24/7 access to the blocks, it is a great way to reduce bullying at the trough, adds Dr Bond. They are also convenient, significantly reducing the amount of time it takes to feed. With a product range consisting of eight different blocks, Rumevite supplementation can be tailored to suit livestock nutritional requirements at any point during the grazing or housing period. NIAB DEVELOPS BARN4, AN INCUBATOR BUSINESS SPACE FOR AGRITECH SMES

Start-up agritech businesses will have access to new work and research facilities, alongside business support opportunities

S

tart-up agritech businesses will have access to new work and research facilities, alongside business support opportunities, with the development of Barn4, a purpose-built facility on the outskirts of Cambridge. The crop research organisation NIAB has been awarded £2.5 million funding from The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority to construct a 375m2 business incubator on its Park Farm site in Histon in Cambridgeshire. Barn4 will be open to tenants from spring 2021 with start-ups and SMEs offered laboratory, workshop and office space, meeting rooms and video-conferencing facilities. In addition, they will be able to get access to NIAB’s high performance computing capability, specialist laboratory facilities and both indoor and outdoor growing spaces. Demand in Cambridge remains strong for these facilities despite the impact of Covid-19 on office working. The agritech sector continues to grow and incubator space in and around the city is heavily over-subscribed. The unique offering of state-ofthe-art technical facilities and links to NIAB, the Cambridge technology cluster and the wider agricultural sector will be ideal for early stage companies

to grow and flourish. A HOUSE IN THE BACKGROUND Description automatically generatedDr Juno McKee, Director of NIAB Ventures, says that Barn4 will provide facilities for up to 15 companies with 45 staff. “NIAB will work with a network of commercial and academic partners to provide a complete ecosystem within which technology driven startups and spinouts can thrive.” The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority Mayor James Palmer says, “In the wake of Covid-19 it is more vital than ever that we level up the economy of the region as we rebound and renew, and if we are to recover quickly and fulfil on the promise of our region we have to take risks and promote disruption in the market. Agritech is one of our key growth areas and I am absolutely delighted that the Combined Authority has enabled NIAB to create Barn4, which will help the sector expand and flourish. I am passionate about supporting innovation and entrepreneurship, and Barn4’s nurturing environment for young companies will help ground-breaking startups to flourish. I look forward to seeing the birth of worldleading technical solutions to agricultural challenges and

opportunities as Barn4 opens and develops from 2021.” Minister for Regional Growth and Local Government Simon Clarke MP says, “Investing in innovative agritech projects is at the heart of this Government’s commitment to create new, green jobs and reach our target of Net-Zero by 2050. That is why we are investing £2.5 million from the Local Growth Fund in this exciting project to create space for start-ups and small businesses in Cambridgeshire to grow and innovate, creating new jobs for the region and supporting this world-leading centre for agritech.” The new building will be an addition to NIAB’s recently redeveloped Park Farm field research station which includes two new large research and office buildings (5,500 m2), 2,500 m2 of research glasshouses with an additional 300m2 planned, 3,000m2 protected outdoor growing space and field trial plots. NIAB’s Director of Commercialisation Dr Michael Gifford explains that, in the face of challenges such as Covid-19, Brexit, the new Agriculture Bill, climate change and food security, the UK agrifood industry is under enormous pressure to redefine its farming and food supply chains.

REDUCING INFECTION PRESSURE WHILE STAYING IN COMPLIANCE Reducing infection pressure while staying in compliance with restricted drying off protocols

A

s more milk buyers are advising against blanket dry cow therapy, dairy farmers are turning to teat sealants to reduce infection pressure against mastitis. “The restrictions in the use of blanket dry cow therapy at drying off has resulted in many dairy farmers taking a selective approach to treating cows in the drying off period,” explains Alison Clark, ProgieneBusiness Unit Manager.

Ms Clark. “In addition to using T-HEXX DRY as part of a full drying off protocol in addition to antibiotic and internal teat sealants, if a milk contract does allow the use of an internal teat sealant, external teat sealants help to further prevent environmental pathogen infection and also act as fly control.” MITIGATING MASTITIS WITH BEST PRACTICE

When it comes to drying off protocols to prevent infection, Depending on the contract, Ms Clark recommends abrupt administering antibiotic drying off once cows are treatment as part of selective producing 21kg of milk or less dry cow therapy may require per day as it has been proven veterinary support to stay in to reduce intramammary compliance. This is prevent any new infections especially important in the from being picked up at that first two weeks of the dry critical time. period when cows are most susceptible to mastitis,” says 26 | AgriNews

THE NEED FOR PREVENTATIVE PRACTICE Along with compromising animal welfare, costs associated with mastitis carry a huge financial burden. Reports show mastitis costs the UK dairy industry £144 million each year, with the average case costing £200. Currently, the national average is 40 cases of mastitis per 100 cows – that’s a total cost of £8,000 per year. “Mastitis has a huge economic impact on dairy farms. Associated costs are due to a decrease in milk yields and fertility, extra labour, treatments, penalties for high somatic cell counts and the dumping of milk due to antibiotic usage. It can also increase replacement and culling costs since infection will affect yield for future lactations,” explains Ms Clark. “However, by taking a preventative approach and adopting best drying off practice, dairy producers can reduce infection pressure to help mitigate these issues on their farms.”

nfection rate slowing among Banham Poultry workers as firm asks for financial assistance A total of 104 workers at Banham Poultry in Norfolk have now tested positive for COVID-19 out of 769 tested. Norfolk County Council’s director of public health, Dr Louise Smith, said this was a smaller rise than in previous updates, indicating the outbreak was under control. “On current projections, that would give us an approximate infection rate across the whole site of around 13%, compared to the total of 23% we found when we tested staff in the cutting room,” she said. Banham Poultry had brought in a team of 45 outside staff tp continue slaughtering birds while the usual team of

Norfolk county council leader Councillor Andrew Proctor Banham Poultry and its shareholders met with representatives from BEIS and other Government departments, together with New Anglia LEP, George Freeman MP and Sam Chapman-Allen, leader of Breckland Council, to understand the economic impact on Banham Poultry and the wider economy. “Banham Poultry has made a request for financial support which will be considered by officials and ministers,” said Proctor. “We have briefed the food industry about the situation and the additional precautions they should take to ensure the continued wellbeing of their staff. We are also briefing

recruitment agencies. All staff at the plant, plus their households, are being asked to self-isolate for 14 days if they have not tested positive and for 10 days if they have tested positive – households of those who have tested positive need to isolate for 14 days Additional mobile testing units are being brought into Norfolk, to offer testing to anyone connected to the Banham Poultry site As announced last Friday, staff who are self-isolating are being offered support, if they need it, from the Norfolk Assistance Scheme – including food and medical supplies and hardship fund payments. E

lla Kelly, a third generation member of the family that brought the traditional bronze turkey back to the Christmas dinner table, has joined Kelly Turkeys – combining her role as marketing manager with farm duties looking after the birds. “It’s an exciting time to be starting with the business on the eve of its 50th anniversary and with our new charcuterie company launching next year,” said Ella Kelly. “A lot of my role is working on that as well as events to mark our anniversary year.” Ella graduated last year from the University of York with a degree in

environment, economics and ecology. She did a fourmonth internship at a digital marketing agency, and then gained experience with an events company in London and with the marketing team at the Jamie Oliver headquarters. “I was also offered a job at a market research and brand strategy agency in London,” she said. “However, due to COVID-19 my start date was postponed as they couldn’t afford to take on new people in the current climate.” Kelly Turkeys celebrates its first 50 years in 2021. The business was founded by Derek and Molly Kelly

when they bought a broiler farm with a chick hatchery at Danbury in Essex, and then switched to hatching turkey poults for the niche Christmas market. Today with their son Paul as managing director, Kelly Turkeys is one of the leading producers of premium traditional turkeys including the multiple award-winning KellyBronze. “It is particularly satisfying to have a granddaughter join us,” said Derek Kelly. “She earned her stripes with a very successful social media campaign last Christmas. I look forward to her continued success to justify my prediction that she will be a valuable addition to our team.” AgriNews | 31

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.
