BALANACED WINTER RATION SUPPLEMENTATION FOR PERFORMANCE As producers begin to open maize and grass silage clamps, paying close detail to forage quality is essential

B

alancing winter ration supplementation for optimal cow performance

As producers begin to open maize and grass silage clamps, paying close detail to forage quality is essential to ensure the nutritional requirements of dairy herds are met, says Dr Richard Kirkland, ruminant nutritionist for Volac Wilmar Feed Ingredients. “Balancing a winter ration should begin with silage analysis to fully understand the quality of the basal forage to enable appropriate supplementation with key macronutrients including fibre, starch, sugar, protein and fat,” he says. “The primary target – ensuring energy supply is maximised.” Delivering adequate energy to support milk production will always be a challenge with modern high-yielding cows and that energy will necessarily come from a range of sources.

boost over digestible fibre sources of energy but limits will soon become clear as over-reliance on either of these types of raw material will lead to problems or productivity shortfalls. With wheat and barley, rapid rates of starch fermentation in the rumen generates acid which drives down rumen pH, and with that an increased risk of acidosis. This effect will be acutely evident in the milk cheque with a fall in milk fat percentage, but the knock-on effects of poor rumen function will reduce fibre digestibility – reducing energy delivered from the basal forage, as well as increasing lameness issues. With a slower fermentation rate, maize offers a somewhat ‘safer’ form of starch than the other cereals and has a slightly higher energy density making it a good addition for starch supply.

“High D-value silages targeted to the highest-yielders will improve energy availability, but when it comes to supplementation we must look for a range of energy sources to give the ration the balance needed,” says Dr Kirkland.

Digestible fibre sources such as soya hulls, citrus and sugarbeet pulp will help balance the starchy energy sources and aid rumen function and milk fat, though offer less of the rumen ‘tickle’ factor than fibrous forages. With lower energy concentration than the cereals, the greater bulk will limit the potential to deliver those vital megajoules (calories).

Starchy cereals provide a

“As we’re well aware from

4 | Octobber 2021 | AgriNews

our own dietary habits, the number one energy source is fat. With around 2.5-times higher energy concentration per kilo than cereals, fat punches well above its weight, but with the key benefit that it doesn’t generate acid in the rumen to risk acidosis. It’s all about getting more energy in every bite,” explains Dr Kirkland. “As with the other macronutrients, research has defined requirements for optimal milk production and data indicate that dairy cows require 15-20% of their energy supply to be in the form of fat. From a more practical perspective, this means that rations heading toward 6% fat in the dry matter could be required to meet the needs for milk production.” Aside from a concentrated source of megajoules, Dr Kirkland says the response to fat supplements will vary according to the blend of fatty acids making up the fat. The supplement most suitable to an individual farm will depend on factors including requirements for milk contract, stage of lactation and the drive for fertility. For early lactation cows, the challenge is to minimise body condition score loss and to get back in calf. As a general rule, each one-unit loss in condition will reduce conception rates by 10%.

we nutrition remains critical during early stages of pregnancy

Ensuring adequate levels of energy and protein important to foetal development in early days post-tupping says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco As flocks come through a critical period of body condition gain from weaning to tupping, sheep farmers need to avoid throwing on the nutritional handbrake in the early stages of pregnancy, says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco. “In the first month of pregnancy, foetal development is very limited and doesn’t require a great deal of nutritional support. However, making significant changes to a feeding programme would have devastating consequences to scanning percentages and future flock performance,” says Dr Bond. “Research has shown that target body condition scores (BCS) achieved by the start of tupping need to be maintained for the first 30 days of pregnancy to support embryo quality, fertilised ova survival and implantation and then continued later in the pregnancy for foetal development.”

At tupping time, a lowland ewe weighing 60-80kg should have a BCS of 3-3.5 and a typical upland ewe weighing 40-60kgs should have a BCS of 2.5. Most farmers will have had to push ewes with high quality forage and supplementation to get them back in shape following weaning. “A 4cm grass sward is sufficient for maintenance but any less or poorer quality grazing may need supplementing,” says Dr Bond. “As forage quality declines towards the end of the grazing season, a multi-purpose supplement like Rumevite feed blocks deliver adequate energy and protein levels while helping to increase forage digestion and utilisation during this key period.” Embryos for better flock performance and implantation rates According to Dr Bond, an oocyte, aka very early embryo, is very sensitive to its surrounding environment and can influence foetal growth and subsequent birthweight as early as six days after fertilisation. “High feeding levels can reduce progesterone levels, compromising embryo survival,” says Dr Bond.

“Similarly, reduced uterine pH is also a factor with effects being more apparent in our ewe lambs compared to our mature animals. The development of the embryo is affected not only in the short term but also life-long by maternal feed intake but also specific nutrients such as energy and trace elements such as cobalt.” Along with impacts on foetal development and birthweight, nutritional deficiencies in early pregnancy have been shown to affect maternal care. For example, underfed ewes will groom and bleat less to their lambs. Lambs from underfed ewes will have less vigour and higher rates of mortality. Research has found early pregnancy deficiencies to lead to a decline in fertility of those lambs further down the line. Following embryo development, early pregnancy nutrition also has an impact on implantation. This takes place around day 19 when the oocyte starts to invade the uterine lining. “Any significant changes in the diet need to be avoided until post-implantation. For management groups, this should be at least two 17day oestrous cycles,” says Dr Bond. AgriNews | October 2021 |5

JCB REMAINS PROFITABLE IN 2020 DESPITE COVID-19 TURBULENCE

Staffordshire-based JCB remained profitable in 2020 despite the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic

S

taffordshire-based JCB remained profitable in 2020 despite the severe impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on its global manufacturing operations, the company announced today. Last year sales turnover fell to £3.1 billion (2019: £4.2 billion), while machine sales decreased to 74,590 (2019: 92,216). Earnings on an EBITDA basis stood at £228 million (2019: £414 million). JCB CEO Graeme Macdonald said: “In March 2020, £1 billion worth of orders disappeared overnight with the onset

8 | Octobber 2021 | AgriNews

of Covid-19 and JCB was forced to close its 21 manufacturing plants around the world for around two months. Despite the severe impact on its business, JCB remained profitable in 2020 as it has done for the past 76 years. The turnaround in 2021 has been dramatic: we are sitting here now in September with four times the usual order bank we had in normal times two to three years ago. As a result, we are ramping up production to levels we have not had before. I have never seen anything like it in my career.” JCB Chairman Lord

Bamford said: “The past is the past and, while 2020 was undoubtedly one of the most difficult years in our history, our focus is now very firmly on the future. We continue to lead the way in zero emissions technology, particularly with the development of the construction equipment industry’s first internal combustion engine powered by hydrogen, which is already being tested in JCB machines. This is a great British breakthrough and we will be producing these engines by the end of next year.”

Engineered for those long days ahead

Big on features and built to last – Amazone fertiliser spreaders are highly engineered, in fact German engineered, to apply tonne after tonne accurately and reliably. Take the new ProfisPro system - the unique concept of twin weigh cells, tilt sensor and the FlowControl torque measuring system, means that not only is the overall spread rate kept accurate but also that the volume coming out of each disc is correctly maintained - meaning less wastage and better fertiliser utilisation. And on a similar note, the AutoTS border spreading system has been shown in trials to give an improved yield of up to 17% in that first pass around the field - now that’s engineering.

The AutoTS border spreading system generates 17% more yield than other border spreading systems.

NFU WELCOME PLANS TO LIBERALISE GENE EDITING RULES

Defra has announced new plans to allow breeders to use gene editing to produce more productive crops

D

efra has announced new plans to allow breeders to use gene editing to produce more resistant, more nutritious and more productive crops and farm animals. Gene editing is a tool that makes breeding more precise, allowing species to be more resistant to pests and disease, more productive and potentially more beneficial to the environment by reducing inputs. Gene editing is different from genetic modification, because it does not result in the introduction of DNA from other species and creates new varieties similar to those that could be produced more slowly by natural breeding processes – but currently they

are regulated in the same way as genetically modified organisms.

“These new tools could help in a number of ways, from addressing pest and disease pressures on crops and NFU Vice President Tom farm animals and improving Bradshaw welcomed the animal health and welfare, to news: “It is very encouraging increasing farmers’ resilience to see the government’s view in the event of extreme that new precision breeding weather events such as techniques, such as gene flooding and drought and editing, have the potential benefiting the environment to offer huge benefits to UK through more efficient use farming, the environment and of resources. This would the public, and will be vital in mean lower emissions helping us achieve our climate and less waste, allowing change net zero ambition. British farmers to farm more sustainably and profitably. “The world’s climate emergency points to the “Crucially, precision breeding urgency of applying this technologies will also help technology to farming and in the development of this announcement is an foods with direct benefits important first step towards to the public; better quality, a properly functioning increased nutritional value legislative system. and products with a longer shelf life.”

DEFRA CONSIDERING BAN ON ENRICHED CAGES IN WELFARE ACTION PLAN

The government is considering a ban on enriched cages in the poultry sector, as part of a plan to improve animal welfare

T

he government is considering a ban on enriched cages in the poultry sector, as part of a plan to improve animal welfare. The Animal Welfare Action Plan was launched today by Defra and as part of the wide-ranging proposals, the government said it would be “examining the use of cages”. While enriched cages for egg production are being phased out by all the UK’s major retailers by 2025, the system currently accounts for a quarter of all production and it had been expected the foodservice

12 | Octobber 2021 | AgriNews

sector would continue to source eggs produced in enriched cages. The plan includes a number of proposed changes that will directly affect the poultry sector, including: Examining the use of cages for poultry Introducing new measures to improve welfare during transport, alongside ending the export of live animals for fattening and slaughter Improving animal welfare at slaughter Incentivising farmers to

improve animal health and welfare through future farming policy under the Animal Health and Welfare Pathway. The Government will be introducing a series of Bills in due course focusing on animal sentience, kept animals here in the UK and the welfare of animals. There will also be a series of non-legislative changes to promote animal welfare over the coming months, with a number of regulations due to be brought forward as early as this year.

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

KIOTI: TRACTOR MODELS PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE With the introduction of the environmental stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP, Kioti range is ready to lead the way

W

ith The introduction of the environmental Stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP the Kioti range of tractors is ready to move forward and lead the way. The change will see the introduction of a number of new exciting models. Kioti have many years of experience using the required technology. The first Compact tractor models using Common rail engines above 50HP with DPF were introduced in 2012. Kioti Engines have been running to quiet, economical and environmental friendly standards since this time. For Kioti the new enhanced

regulations are just a small step not the radical change required for other competitive makes. As a brief outline a new model CK2630, using the reliable Kioti 3A165 engine will be introduced offering a tractor with a physical presence relative to its size, i.e. the same as the existing CK3510 / 4010 but running at 25 Horse power to keep the purchase price lower. Making a useful addition to the models offered from Kioti The New CK30 series tractors will range from 35 to 50 horse power. In this tractor range ROPS and factory cabin versions will be available as well as mechanical and HST transmissions.

The larger DK tractor model range will also grow. Currently HST transmission is available only on the 60HP ROPS and Cabin models. New HST 45 and 50 HP models will be available from late 2020 / early 2021. The cabin will be the spacious and quiet factory cabin that you expect from a Kioti Product. Enhanced lift capacity will also feature giving 1700kg lift at the link arm ends. As well as the changes to the engines Kioti have taken the opportunity to enhance the basic specification for these new models.

ENGLISH CATTLE HERD SHRINKS AGAIN, FIGURES SHOW The number of cattle and calves in England fell by a further 2% year-onyear to 5.1 million

N

umbers of cattle on the ground in England continue to shrink, according to the latest data from Defra, with declines seen in nearly all cattle groupings. According to Defra's June survey, the number of cattle and calves in England decreased by a further 2% year-on-year to 5.1 million. The number of dairy cows fell by 1% to 1.1 million, with suckler cow numbers showing a greater rate of decline, falling by over 3% to 665,000. This brought the total female breeding herd to stand at 1.8 million animals, 2% smaller

than a year ago. Looking at the figures, Hannah Clarke, AHDB analyst for livestock, said: "This follows longer-term trends for cow numbers, although does suggest that the dairy herd decline is levelling off. "Looking at other cattle, the largest declines were seen in the population of animals aged 2 years and over." The number of animals aged between 1-2 years posted more modest declines, Defra's figures show. For females, this was largely driven by fewer beef

animals, as numbers of dairy youngstock increased. On the other hand, the population of cattle aged under 1 year old increased in size, largely driven by increased numbers of dairy females. Beef females recorded a more modest increase. Ms Clarke said: "We await full UK data for a fuller picture, but there is nothing in the English data to suggest a strong recovery in prime beef production next year, but instead, rather more dairy replacements coming through."

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER Crop assurance scheme requirements for pesticide application equipment (PAE) are overall very straightforward with the annual testing of the main farm sprayer and, for those growing root crops, nematicide applicators and fogging machines too. For some of the other machines working and those that are also working in other sectors it is not always quite so clear. As you will be aware, annual testing relates to PAE used in food production, but you may also be using a weed wiper, or even a small sprayer only used for jobs such as spraying grass or game cover plots, where the sprayer would not need to be tested annually. Other sectors which include livestock assurance schemes and also amenity and horticulture, are required to follow the legal requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD). The SUD states that for sprayers over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, train and aircraft sprayers, the first test isn’t due until it is 5 years old, and then must be tested every 3 years. Booms 3 metres and under need to be tested every 6 years, but again

30 | Octobber 2021 | AgriNews

not until they are 5 years old. Other equipment that also falls into this last category include micro-granular applicators applying Avadex, slug pellet applicators, weed wipers, seed treating equipment, along with a range of other specialised application machinery. Operator check sheets are available for some of this equipment on the NSTS website and we would recommend using these if you are not having the machines tested annually. All handheld equipment, including knapsacks, do not need to be tested, but must be inspected on a regular basis, repaired if required, and a record kept of the inspection. With this in mind, NSTS have a knapsack check sheet available on the website. NSTS also promotes the accurate application of fertiliser for a variety of reasons. These include the need to protect the environment and waterways around the UK, along with field margins and hedgerows, which all help towards a more sustainable future for land managers and could become even more important as the new ELM Scheme is rolled out over

the next few years. The second factor is an economical one, most farms will spend as much on fertiliser as they do on pesticides and so accurate application is key. The NSTS spreader tray test will show precisely how evenly a product is being spread across the full working width of the machine. Thecoefficient of variation (CV) is calculated, with the purpose of achieving a CV below 10%, a very good spread pattern. With a CV of 20%, you may start to see striping in the crop, and the financial impact could be as much as £17/ha. The cost of the test can be recouped very quickly if the spreader is found to be spreading unevenly and then adjusted to give a much more even spread pattern. If you would like further information on any of the test procedures, contact NSTS at info@nsts.org.uk, or go to the website, www.nsts.org. uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

Fertiliser Spreader Testing - The Benefits • Environmental – Ensure fertilisers are spread within the crop boundary • Financial – Machine will be adjusted to give best coefficient of variation (CV) across the full width of spread A national network of Test Centres provide testing of all types of equipment. Go to the NSTS for further information or contact your local Test Centre to arrange a test

STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP IS BACK VIRTUALLY

After a one-year hiatus, the best lumberjack athletes across the nation are back to compete for the crown at the Stihl Timbersports®

A

fter a one-year hiatus, the best lumberjack athletes across the nation are back to compete for the crown at the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® British Championship in September, as they chop and slice their way through large logs in seconds using a combination of axes, saws and sheer strength. The STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® British Championship will be live streamed from the Telford International Centre on Sunday 5th September, allowing extreme sports fans the opportunity to see the live action up close and at no cost. This year’s event will see top logger sports athletes battle against each other in six challenging disciplines; Stock Saw, Underhand Chop, Single Buck, Standing Block Chop, Springboard and Hot Saw. In celebration of TIMBERSPORTS® action returning to UK audiences, STIHL has launched a limited-edition STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® chainsaw bar, available on the MS 201 T, STIHL's most powerful arborist chainsaw, as well as separately. The TIMBERSPORTS® design has been added to the

Rollomatic E 35cm 3/8p 1.3mm bar and is the perfect choice for action sports fans replacing their bar or treating themselves to a new saw. To take home the top prize and be crowned the best TIMBERSPORTS® athlete in the UK, competitors are awarded maximum points for the fastest time and must display power, skill, precision and endurance in all six disciplines. Competitors will include five-time British champion Elgan Pugh, who is aiming to win his sixth consecutive STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® British Championship. To add even more excitement to the event, the 2021 Rookie Championship will also take place on the same day and will be available on the live stream, giving TIMBERSPORTS® fans access to more action than ever before. The top nine rookies from around the country will compete against each other across four of the six TIMBERSPORTS® disciplines, accumulating points in each round based on their placing in each discipline. The athlete with the most points at the end of the fourth round will be crowned the 2021 STIHL

TIMBERSPORTS® British Rookie Champion. Simon Hewitt, Head of Marketing at STIHL GB, said: “After a tough 18 months due to the pandemic, we are really excited to have the British Championship back and to give the fans access to the exciting live TIMBERSPORTS® action they have been missing. The live stream event will allow extreme sports fans to get as close to the action as possible and all the athletes are determined to put on a great show! “The athletes have had extra time to prepare due to the postponement of last year’s event, so we’re expecting them to be more fiercely competitive than ever and push themselves to new limits. It should make for a great spectacle and I wish them all the best of luck!” To register for the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® British Championship 2021 live stream event, visit www. facebook.com/events/
