TRAMSPREAD LAUNCHES NEW DRIBBLE BARS Tramspread has launched the new Suffolk range of dribble bars. Manufactured at a new facility in Suffolk.

T

ramspread has launched the new Suffolk range of dribble bars. Manufactured at a new facility in Suffolk, the dribble bars range in width from 6 metres to 24 metres. Boom widths from 6 metres to 15 metres fold vertically and feature automatic transport latches with safety lock. These can be fitted to tankers or tractors as umbilical applicators. The 24-metre boom neatly and horizontally folds around the tractor’s cab without impairing the operator’s vision. “The low profile does not block the view out of the rear of the tractor and the position of the swinging arm does not compromise the tractor’s pick-up hitch. This allows the tractor to tow a pump or reeler whilst the dribble bars are fitted,” explains Tramspread Managing Director, Terry Baker. Dribble bars from 6 to 12 metres feature a single macerator and tractor spool valve controls. The 12 metre

4 | AgriNews | November 2020

is also available with twin macerators, which are fitted on the 15 metre and 24 metre models as standard. All twin macerator dribble bars benefit from electro-hydraulic folding mechanisms, with power beyond, operated from cab mounted controls. Left- and right-hand geometric control is standard on all twin macerator dribble bars and allows for independent boom adjustment, a feature that will help those spreading on undulating land. “This feature enables the boom height to be adjusted for field gradient and out crops,” says Mr Baker. The Suffolk range has pipework designed for flow meters and slurry monitors to be retro fitted using the Tramspread Isobus

Raven Box. “This transmits monitoring and mapping data to a monitor in the cab, which should encourage all users to test and measure slurry to make the most of its nutrients,” says Mr Baker. “We have focussed on connectivity and automation for easy management and recording,” he adds. All booms up to 15 metres are made of galvanised steel whilst the larger 24 metre model has an aluminium construction. “The balance of strength and weight is important. Spreading umbilically is only better for the land if the weight of the dribble bar is not too high. We chose aluminium to reduce the weight which will also reduce soil compaction,” concludes Mr Baker.

PROCAM APPOINTS REGIONAL TECHNICAL MANAGER

ProCam: New Regional Technical Manager appointed for eastern counties

L

eading agronomy firm ProCam has appointed Matthew Cobbald as Regional Technical Manager covering the eastern counties of England. Having worked as an agronomist and farm consultant for over 20 years, including his most recent role as Technical Director with farm management and advisory company Velcourt, Mr Cobbald brings a wealth of experience to his new position. Joining ProCam’s panel of Regional Technical Managers, he will provide support to the company’s team of agronomists across East Anglia and into neighbouring

counties, in addition to looking after his own farming clients. He will also contribute to ProCam’s technical council and be involved in the direction of the company’s multi-site trials programmes. “This is a critical time for farmers and the wider agricultural industry and an exciting time to be joining ProCam,” says Matthew. “There are challenges ahead, for sure, whether presented by the regulations on pesticide use, climate change, or political direction, but there are also great opportunities.

approach is ideal for what’s required. “Crop protection remains fundamental to ProCam’s offer, but we also provide expertise in seeds and traits, crop nutrition, biological products, conservation agriculture and precision farming. I believe this more integrated approach will be essential as farmers seek to adapt in the years ahead.”

Mr Cobbald is from a family farm in Essex and has during his career to date worked across all broadacre crops “I believe as agronomists we as well as potatoes, roots, have a pivotal role in helping vegetables and forage crops. farmers adapt their businesses He lives in Suffolk with his wife for the future and ProCam’s and young family. broad ‘boots on the ground’

AVOID FIVE PITFALLS WHEN DRILLING LATER, WHEAT GROWERS URGED

Be aware of these “watch-out” points or pitfalls now that drilling of winter what crops has slipped later due to unsettled weather. Be aware of these “watch-out” points or pitfalls now that drilling of winter wheat crops has slipped later due to unsettled weather, says Nigel Scott, regional technical manager for agronomy firm ProCam. Some important adjustments to autumn agronomy may be needed, he adds. 1. Don’t drill based on seed weight – use seed numbers Seed rates need increasing to offset the shorter tillering period when drilling later, says Mr Scott, and to offset other risks such as slugs. But big variations in seed thousand grain weight this season make it particularly important to drill in seeds per square metre, he stresses, not in kilograms of seed per hectare.“Some of this variation may be due to seed from the 2020 harvest having a higher thousand grain weight than seed carried over from 2019,” says Mr Scott. “Whatever the reason, a higher thousand grain weight will mean each kilogram contains fewer seeds. If you don’t account for this, it could result in big shortfalls in plant populations.” Using 350 seeds per square metre as an example, Mr Scott says a thousand grain weight of 52 grams requires 182kg/ha of seed to achieve this, but a thousand grain weight of 64 grams requires 224kg/ha – almost 25% more. “Accounting for thousand grain weight is crucial because shortfalls in plant populations not only compromise yield potential, they also leave more space for blackgrass and other weeds to thrive.” 2. Don’t over-stretch seed

8 | AgriNews | November 2020

The need to increase seed rates with later drilling is complicated this season by a seed shortage, says Mr Scott. Added to this, he says some seed carried over from last season has dropped in its percentage germination – some to as low as 60%. “If short on seed, don’t be tempted to stretch it out,” he stresses. “Consider using home-saved to make up for shortfalls. However, don’t leave it exposed to establishment diseases by omitting a fungicide seed treatment. Risks from seed and soil-borne diseases increase with later drilling because of colder and wetter soils.” 3. Avoid ‘mauling’ seed in Avoid mauling seed in when seedbeds aren’t suitable, says Mr Scott. You might feel a sense of relief that it has been planted, but the effects of planting in poor conditions can carry through not just to harvest, he says, but also into the following crop. “Pre-emergence herbicides won’t work as well in poor seedbeds, resulting in bigger grass weed problems this season and increased weed seed return for the future. Seedbeds that are too wet to roll can also reduce seed to soil contact and crop germination, and leave crops at the mercy of slugs. As a rule of thumb, if it’s not fit to drill, leave seed in the bag. Last season, crops planted in better seedbeds often established well enough before the rains arrived to withstand the washout winter.” 4. Check variety growth habit If you’d planned to drill earlier but been rained off, double check

that your variety’s growth habit still suits the new drilling date, urges Mr Scott. It’s a complex area, he says, and you may need specific guidance.“Our trials have shown big differences between the emergence and tillering of varieties as drilling shifts later. But not all varieties were affected equally. In an extreme case of December drilling, the best variety gave 50% better emergence than the worst. There were also big differences in tiller numbers coming into spring. “Unsurprisingly, a slower-developing variety took longer to reach key spring growth stages when drilled in October and November. However, certain slower-developing varieties maintained good yield irrespective of delayed drilling.” 5. Be aware of reduced vigour As well as reduced tillering with later drilling, be aware of reduced crop vigour as crops are planted into colder, wetter soils, says Mr Scott, as well as the potential for lower vigour in seed carried over from last year. “Lower vigour underlines the argument for planting into good seedbeds. But also consider an autumn micronutrient and bio-stimulant treatment to boost growth. I’ve seen improved root structures with them, and last season I saw an extra 0.4-0.5 t/ ha in a split field. The only difference was the higher-yielding part of the field had a micronutrient and bio-stimulant added to the spray tank when the autumn aphicide was applied.”

Performance enhancing upgrades include a redesigned roller crop press capable of lifting higher in heavier crops, while the side support arms have also been strengthened and incorporate improved limit stops. Enhanced protection against crop wrapping is also provided for the bearings, which have now been mounted inside the roller. Up front, the 2.2m pickup reel - which features twin-cam tracks and five tine bars - has also been given a makeover. It now features 10mm longer tines and wider stripper plates to improve cleaning in wet crop conditions. The pick-up drive chain has also been

increased in size for added durability. The driveline has received attention and is now equipped with long-life

which adds rigidity. Maintenance has been simplified with bale chamber drive rollers gaining cast iron housings and centralised grease banks, ensuring nonproductive maintenance time is kept to a minimum. Operator convenience has been improved with a folding PTO stand, which also incorporates hose and cable storage. An easy access rear PTO cover is also provided for simpler maintenance.

HBC specification chains providing higher fatigue strength and increased wear resistance, compared to conventional chain. The bale chamber has not escaped attention either, with a new design of idler rollers which benefit from a 45% increase in bearing diameter, along with larger internal grease capacity and improved shielding. The idler rollers also gain a continuous central shaft,

Visually the new Plus series models are distinguishable from previous RV models thanks to high-level LED road lights, now positioned out of harm’s way, reducing the likelihood of damage from stray bales. RV5200 models are available to order for the 2021 season, priced from £39,908 for the RV5216 SuperFeed model.

KIOTI: TRACTOR MODELS PREPARED FOR THE FUTURE With the introduction of the environmental stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP, Kioti range is ready to lead the way

W

ith The introduction of the environmental Stage V engine standards for all tractors above 25HP the Kioti range of tractors is ready to move forward and lead the way. The change will see the introduction of a number of new exciting models. Kioti have many years of experience using the required technology. The first Compact tractor models using Common rail engines above 50HP with DPF were introduced in 2012. Kioti Engines have been running to quiet, economical and environmental friendly standards since this time. For Kioti the new enhanced

regulations are just a small step not the radical change required for other competitive makes. As a brief outline a new model CK2630, using the reliable Kioti 3A165 engine will be introduced offering a tractor with a physical presence relative to its size, i.e. the same as the existing CK3510 / 4010 but running at 25 Horse power to keep the purchase price lower. Making a useful addition to the models offered from Kioti The New CK30 series tractors will range from 35 to 50 horse power. In this tractor range ROPS and factory cabin versions will be available as well as mechanical and HST transmissions.

The larger DK tractor model range will also grow. Currently HST transmission is available only on the 60HP ROPS and Cabin models. New HST 45 and 50 HP models will be available from late 2020 / early 2021. The cabin will be the spacious and quiet factory cabin that you expect from a Kioti Product. Enhanced lift capacity will also feature giving 1700kg lift at the link arm ends. As well as the changes to the engines Kioti have taken the opportunity to enhance the basic specification for these new models.

THE BOOTS WHO WERE MADE FOR WORKING NOTCH UP 600 YEARS SERVICE As JCB prepares to mark its 75th birthday, there’s one family with an extra reason to toast the milestone

A

S JCB prepares to mark its 75th birthday tomorrow there’s one family with an extra reason to toast the milestone after notching up a staggering 600 years’ service to the company.

changed so much, but so many things have stayed the same. It may have factories in all four corners of the world but it is still based on the values that started it up in Staffordshire 75 years ago.”

their second cousin Leigh Boot. Shaun, of Denstone, who has worked for JCB for 20 years, said: “There is definitely something in the blood of the Boot family that makes us want to work at JCB.

The Boot family started its long association with JCB in 1949 when Bill Boot clocked on for the first time at the company’s factory in Rocester, Staffordshire. In the years that followed, nine of ten of Bill and his wife Lucy’s children went on to work at JCB. In total 27 Boot family members – including nine grandsons and three greatgrandsons have followed in Bill’s footsteps – registering a staggering 600 years’ combined service to JCB.

Bill’s grandson Gary Boot, of Uttoxeter, 58, of who retired in September, said his family were very proud of their JCB links. Gary, who started working for JCB in 1986, said: “I always wanted to join from an early age. My dad, Dereck, would come home and tell us stories of the company and Mr JCB and that sparked my interest. I’ve made so many great friends and have so many memories of the place. It is amazing to think of how many years’ service our family has put in – 600, it’s astonishing.”

“Knowing that dad, grandad and great grandad all worked here really does make me sit back and think. I’m really not sure what our family would have done for a living if it wasn’t for JCB. I have a six-yearold daughter and my brother Daniel has a six-year-old son. So, you never know, I wouldn’t be surprised if they decide to follow in the family tradition.”

The milestone has just been reached as JCB prepares to mark its 75th anniversary on October 23rd – the day in 1945 that the late Joseph Cyril Bamford founded his business in a lock-up garage in the Staffordshire market town of Uttoxeter. Today the late Bill Boot’s legacy continues as 11 members of his family still work at JCB – including five of his grandsons and three of his greatgrandsons. Bill’s son Bob, aged 81 and living in Cheadle, Staffordshire, started work in at JCB in 1956 on a temporary contract – and stayed for nearly 44 years. He said: “It is a company that has

Gary’s identical twin brothers Andy and Steven both work at the World HQ in Rocester. Andy, 53, said: “I think how it is panned out over the generations has been brilliant. I joined in 1983 on a Youth Training Scheme and haven’t looked back from there.” Steven, of Rocester, added: “Being identical twins makes it difficult for our colleagues, but to be honest, there are so many Boots I find it difficult to keep up myself on some occasions!” The fourth generation of Boots working at JCB is made up of great-grandsons, brothers Shaun and Daniel Boot and

Bill Boot and his wife Lucy – who worked in the JCB canteen – had nine sons and a daughter and nine of the children - Tony, Dereck (correct), Ken, Bob, Bill, Dennis, Les, Ron and Ruby – went on to work at JCB followed by grandchildren and great-grandchildren. JCB was founded on the same day as JCB’s Chairman Anthony Bamford, now Lord Bamford, was born. The company’s first product was a hydraulic tipping trailer made out of war time scrap. Today the company manufactures more than 300 different machines, including the world’s first electric mini excavator. JCB has 22 factories around the world, 11 in the UK and others in India, the USA, Brazil and China.

SUPPORTING YOUR FARMLAND BIRDS THIS WINTER Important updates and advice regarding coronavirus (COVID-19) Supporting your farmland birds this winter

I

mportant updates and advice regarding coronavirus (Covid-19)

With increasingly erratic weather patterns - this year being no exception - one thing that remains constant is the lack of food availability for farmland birds over the course of the winter and early spring months. Alarmingly, Europe has seen a substantial decline in farmland bird numbers in the last 40 years. This is of grave concern, as our birds are often considered good indicators of how healthy the natural environment is, particularly as they sit near the top of the food chain. The dramatic fall in UK farmland bird populations is clear to see in the chart data taken from the November 2019 Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) publication, "Wild bird populations in the UK 1970 to 2018". From the numbers, we can see that our farmland bird species declined by 56% between 1970 and 2018. Studying the report in detail shows that the four worst affected species – grey partridge, corn burning, tree sparrow and turtle dove – have declined by over 80%. The once common and iconic yellowhammer has sadly declined by 54%. Why are we losing so many of our farmland birds? The decline can be attributed

16 | AgriNews | November 2020

to many factors, including the loss of mixed farming, more intensive farming practices, larger fields, increased predation and changes to the crops that are being grown. These problems have been recognised by the Government, with options now available in more recent agri-environment schemes to help improve farmland biodiversity and therefore support our bird populations. Grants exist within Entry Level Stewardship, Higher Level Stewardship and Countryside Stewardship for farmers who can help struggling farmland birds through the 'hungry gap' by spreading small seed mixtures. What is the 'hungry gap'? This term refers to the period from December to April when existing sown wild bird seed crops, game cover, hedgerows and trees have less plentiful seed and food. While this can have an immediate effect on bird populations due to starvation, it critically means that many surviving birds go into the spring breeding season in poor condition. As a result, populations inevitably shrink as less chicks fledge. How can you help? When out on farm, we are often shown some really excellent wild bird seed mix plots which provide a mass of food for our seed-eating birds, but no matter how much care and attention is given to these plots,

birds will invariably run out of seed by January. This is where supplementary winter feeding comes in. There are many ways of feeding birds with small seeds, from spreading by hand to using a spinner on the back of a vehicle. By adhering to good practice, you can ensure farmland birds really benefit: Feed next to hedgerows if you can, as this reduces the risk of predation Vary the amount of seed put down to match the uptake. Start with 'little and often' until you know how much is being taken Use hard tracks where possible, as this makes it easy for the birds to find the seed. Move feeding sites around when required to avoid the build up of vermin, and avoid feeding near to farm buildings and water courses Some hopper feeding is allowed under agri-environment scheme rules but the majority should be spread on the ground. If you are thinking of applying for a Mid Tier Countryside Stewardship agreement or a Wildlife Offer, you can apply for one tonne of supplementary winter feeding (option code AB12) for every two hectares of wild bird seed mix (option code AB9) you apply for. The grant rate at the time of writing is £632 per tonne.

LUPINS & SOYA - VIABLE ALTERNATIVES TO OSR The increasing difficulties with OSR in recent year have led to growers seeking a sustainable, profitable alternative sustainable protein markets to create a full supply chain. This connection with the end buyer means we create the expectation of what is possible in the field, where crops can be grown, and how this can be maintained long-term, creating a viable solution for our customers.”

T

he increasing difficulties with OSR in recent years have led to growers seeking a sustainable, profitable alternative, but this hasn’t come without its challenges. Rob Nightingale, Frontier crop production specialist, suggests that lupins and soya could be the solution. “There are now a number of viable end market options for these alternative proteins,” Rob explains. “Frontier is working with partners, such as ABN, to generate alternative,

18 | AgriNews | November 2020

Rob says this means thoughts should turn to the other consideration – can I grow the crop? “Historically, peas and beans have been the ‘go-to’ break crop, but lupins and soya are slowly increasing in popularity, with several trials across the UK investigating optimum growing conditions and the required herbicide programmes. “This season, Frontier grew 500 acres of lupins in sites across the south of England, running extensive herbicide programmes to see how best to get the crop established, and have been pleasantly

surprised with performance. It looks a practical option for growers in 2021, and likewise we’re in the early stages of soya trials, so watch this space to find out how it could be a part of your rotation in the coming years.” Exploring market opportunities There are agronomic benefits to introducing an alternative break crop but there has to be a market for the resulting harvest for this to be truly viable long term. A spokesperson for ABN said of the work with Frontier “We are very interested in exploring opportunities to source alternative sustainable protein sources, especially those that could be UK grown. As such we are investing in trials using lupin protein as part of the ration in our poultry and pig feeds and initial work looks very positive.” Checklist for lupins in 2021: Rob’s considerations for those considering growing lupins in 2021: -

JOHN DEERE: DATA TRANSFER FOR MIXED FLEETS

Today’s farmers have to collect data to manage their farm, with the ISOXML it’s possible to transfer field data to the operations centre

T

oday’s farmers have to collect a large amount of data to manage their farm and for documentation requirements. With the ISOXML standard it’s possible to transfer field data from machine displays of the most popular manufacturers to the John Deere Operations Centre. In this way, John Deere is able to support customers that work with mixed equipment fleets. Data commonly recorded by farm machinery includes field borders, application rates and crop yields, with the information helping farmers to operate more efficiently, cost-effectively and sustainably. However, customers with mixed fleets have often failed to successfully transfer and merge such data into as few software solutions as possible in the office. The John Deere Operations Centre enables farmers and contractors to exchange different data formats, and there are several ways to transfer data from the machine to the Operations Centre:

without any additional costs. Depending on the application, the data can be viewed in the Operations Centre in almost real time and work progress can be measured. Alternatively, the operator can use a USB stick. ● Field data from machine displays that use the ISOXML format can be transferred to the Operations Centre from the beginning of August, but a USB stick is needed for the exchange. Historical machine data can also be included if still present, for example when stored on a computer. ● Proprietary data from other machine displays can be sent to the Operations Centre via a USB stick. In addition, data can be exchanged via a smartphone using a dedicated memory stick. The data can be forwarded from the phone to the Operations Centre using the John Deere MyTransfer app.

● Manual documentation of field work is also possible. This helps for example when collecting information from machines without a ● John Deere machines documentation are connected directly and function, or if wirelessly with the Operations the driver has Centre via JDLink Connect, forgotten to 24 | AgriNews | November 2020

start the documentation process. In this case, all data can be typed into the MyOperations app on the smartphone. Manual documentation via the app is currently available for soil preparation, drilling and crop care applications such as fertilising and spraying, with harvesting data to follow shortly. In addition to seasonal machine documentation, the Operations Centre user receives a comprehensive digital field book. Customers can view and manage all data from any location using a computer browser or smartphone. The John Deere Operations Centre and MyOperations smartphone app are free of charge. In addition, the exchange of data from various sources does not involve any fees for farmers or contractors. John Deere dealers can provide further information on compatible displays plus the various data formats and transmission options available.

WATER RESOURCES: WHY THEY ARE FUNDAMENTAL FOR THE FUTURE Water resources: Why they are fundamental for the future of agriculture

R

isorse idriche agricoltura Phenomena such as waves of drought and rising temperatures will become increasingly frequent in the coming years due to climate change. In different areas of the world they are already a current reality and make it increasingly challenging to engage in agricultural activities at the levels of the past. Moreover, phenomena such as population growth, urbanisation and pollution do not make the situation any easier.

In this panorama, water resources become a particularly precious commodity, to be exploited carefully and more and more efficiently in order to satisfy all the uses that are made of them. Water is in fact necessary for alimentary uses, but also for industry, tourism and agriculture. Agriculture in Europe is the sector that uses the most water resources, accounting for about 40% of the resources used each year (as detailed in this article on the use of European water resources). With the everincreasing demand for water, it is necessary to find solutions to meet the needs of people, the economy and nature. In some regions, especially during the summer months, there is not enough water to meet the demand of everyone. This is why organisations such as the European Union encourage a range of actions for the careful

and sustainable use of water resources. Let us look at this in greater detail. How agriculture affects the use of water resources The European Environment Agency estimates that approximately one third of Europe’s territory is exposed to water stress conditions, which can become particularly severe during the summer. The greatest risk concerns the Mediterranean countries, but the problem of water scarcity is beginning to affect some regions of Great Britain and Germany. Despite significant improvements in the efficiency of water use in recent years, agriculture continues to be primarily responsible for water use. In spring, the incidence rate of this sector can reach up to 60% of European water consumption, due to the large amount of water needed to support fruit and vegetable production. For this reason, it is expected that the cost of irrigation could increase in the coming years, especially if the forecast of reduced rainfall due to climate change should become a reality. Not to be underestimated is the fact that during the summer months another key sector such as tourism competes with agriculture for water demand. November 2020 | AgriNews | 25

KUBOTA (UK) INTRODUCES THIRD GENERATION M7 TRACTORS

Kubota (UK) Ltd has introduced the M7003 tractor series to the UK market. The latest M7 models meet EU Stage V emission regulations

K

ubota (UK) Ltd has introduced the M7003 tractor series to the UK market. Now in its third generation, the latest M7 models meet EU Stage V emission regulations, and combine further refinements with enhanced functionality, and greater operator convenience. “New features across the range include Xpress restart, Multispeed steering, advanced LED lighting package, and Tractor Implement Management (TIM),” explains Kubota product manager for agriculture, Luke Sellwood. “The M7003 buyer also has access to a greater range of optional extras.” The M7003 series offers three models – M7133, M7153 and M7173. Power outputs from the four-cylinder engine remain unchanged at 130hp, 150hp and 170hp respectively, with a 20hp boost on the two lower powered models, and a 5hp boost for the flagship M7173. Revised engine characteristics deliver a constant power band from 1800-2100rpm, while a constant torque level extends from 1200-1600rpm. Full power is delivered at 1900rpm, while maximum torque arrives at 1500rpm. EU Stage V emissions compliance is achieved using a combination of advanced

diesel particulate filter (DPF) and selective catalytic reduction (SCR), allowing lowpressure EGR to be eliminated. The DPF cleaning interval has been doubled from 3,000 to 6,000 hours, contributing to lower operating costs. Transmission options continue to include the stepless KVT and a powershift gearbox that uses six powershift speeds in five synchronised ranges. The powershift transmission now benefits from additional functionality, with the development of Xpress restart. Activated by a switch, Xpress restart provides a brake-tostop function, which avoids the need to depress the clutch pedal to stop the tractor. This feature suits repetitive startstop tasks such as round baling, and loader work. All models are now equipped with Multispeed steering control. This new development allows the operator to select the steering ratio to suit working speed and application, offering greater comfort and convenience with headland turns, for example. “The standard steering ratio is four turns lock-to-lock,” says Mr Sellwood. “With Multispeed, the operator can choose from a 20%, 40% or 60% reduction in the number of turns required.” At its quickest setting,

Multispeed allows full-lock to be reached with just 1.5 turns when travelling forward, and 2.4 turns when travelling backwards. For safety, the system automatically disengages at a forward speed of 18kph (12kph in reverse), and re-engages as speed drops below this threshold the travel speed slows. The system is completely disabled when forward speed reaches 25kph (20kph in reverse) and can only be re-engaged when the tractor slows and the Multispeed selector switch is repositioned. M7003 tractors also get a swap-valve function, allowing re-assignment of spool valves to suit operator preferences for fingertip or joystick control. Up to six spools can be fitted, and the m aximum hydraulic system flow rate is 110 litres/ min with a load-sensing, variable displacement pump for M7153 and M7173 models. The M7133 uses an 80 litres/ min fixed displacment pump. Rear lift capacity is 9.4 tonnes, and PTO choices include 540/540E and 1000/1000E. Upfront, the tractor’s linkage offers a 3.5 tonne lift capacity, with the option of a 1000rpm front PTO. Improved lighting is also available for M7003 tractors, offering three different levels of configuration. Buyers can choose 10 halogen worklights,

SPRAYER TESTING CHANGES COME INTO FORCE FROM NOVEMBER 2020 As part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment testing became a legal requirement in 2016..

A

s part of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD), pesticide application equipment (PAE) testing became a legal requirement in 2016. Any machine applying a professional pesticide must be tested by the specified dates and at regular intervals thereafter. To explain this in a bit more detail, the change affects sprayers that are more than 5 years old and have a boom width over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, aircraft, and train sprayers. Currently a test is required every 5 years, but from 26th November it changes to every 3 years. So, for any sprayer of this type tested before November 2017, a re-test is due by that date.

28 | AgriNews | November 2020

It is also important to note that sprayers tested any time after 26th November 2017, the test is only valid for 3 years, so if your sprayer was tested for example in June 2018, the next test is due in June 2021. For all other types of PAE, which includes boom sprayers 3 metres and under, weed wipers, slug pellet and granular applicators and a range of other machines, the requirements remain unchanged at 6 yearly cycles for retest. Crop assurance scheme requirements haven’t changed so sprayers are still required to be tested annually. Regular testing is important in helping to ensure safe and accurate application

of pesticides, protecting the environment and waterways, but also helping to safeguard the availability of products for the future. A regularly tested machine will reduce the risk of breakdowns, when timing of applications can be crucial for efficient control of weeds, pests and diseases. The need for an integrated pest management (IPM) plan to be carried out helps ensure that when the decision has been made to use a pesticide, that the equipment is calibrated and has been tested to a standard that will apply the product in a safe and sustainable way. STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

The new scheme will be available to vets across the UK, helping to support preventative healthcare and research within these industries. “Bursaries provide numerous benefits to both professionals within the sector, and the wider industry. Geenty, Business Unit Director for Integrated Livestock, at MSD Animal Health UK. “Good research forms the foundation of the industry and being awarded a bursary has proved to be a career-changing experience for some participants. Our vet surgeon research bursaries therefore have a vital role in encouraging vet surgeons to gain new knowledge and continue to develop their research skills.” As highly innovative sectors, she explains that this new support will help the industry to continue to develop, strengthening food production for both

domestic and overseas trade markets. Vets are able to apply for one of the six bursaries, each worth up to £4,000 across the species categories. The project should be completed within one to two years, and proposals will be assessed by university academics to ensure independent judgement. “Assessors will be looking for applicants who demonstrate the quality and clarity of their research project, including setting realistic goals, the potential value of the project, and its originality,” concludes Rebecca.

STAYING AT HOME WITH SOME FREE TIME? LET’S TUNE UP YOUR UTV

Corvus UTV’s are working at full capacity in holdings performing agricultural and livestock works so we have a guaranteed food supply

C

ORVUS UTVs are working at full capacity in holdings performing agricultural and livestock works so we have a guaranteed food supply. But this is not our only mission, CORVUS UTVs are also helping with desinfection works in streets and public spaces. If you are being forced to give a rest to your UTV due to Coronavirus containment measures, we show you some basic general tips that can actually be performed very quickly. These checks will keep you entertained at home and will also help you verifyng everything is in perfect state. If you add this to your rountine, the maintenance of your UTV will be a question of habit. As your UTV has not been used in a few days, before starting it is important to visually check for leaks, assessing them on the basis of their location and amount and which product is leaking (be aware of the danger of fire). It is very important to keep an eye on identified leaks or product losses, and give these priority for repair. In case of no leaks, we are ready to start our UTV general check. We recommend to have on hand the corresponding original brand and model User Manual. ENGINE OIL LEVEL Remove the cap, take out the dipstick and clean it with some

cloth. Afterwards, introduce it again and take it out in order to check the oil level is adequate.

If it incorporates a spare tyre please also check it is in perfect conditions to be used.

COOLANT LEVEL

REAR BRAKE PADS

The cooling deposit is another element to be checked. In this case you will be able to see the cooling liquid at a glance.

Check the thickness of the remaining lining, ensuring that the thickness of the lining is not less than 1,5mm. If this happens, we do not recommend you to drive the vehicle and we would give it priority in the next official service repair visit.

BRAKE FLUID One of the most important maintenance tasks of your UTV is to keep a brake system in perfect conditions. If the brake fluid level is under or over the limits shown on the tank, check the thickness of the brake pads and make sure they have not reached their usage limit. TIRES You should check the tyres are not worn out, cracked or damaged, and also that both present the same look and worn-out level in inner and outer sides. Irregular wearing means wrong alignment. Please check wear limit on tyre tread presents a maximum of 3,5mm deep. Moreover, correct pressure must also be verified. This will depend on the UTV model and weight, as each manufacturer recommends a specific pressure level. In CORVUS, we recommend that all our UTV tyres have a pressure of: – 1.0 bar (empty vehicle).

Once these elements are checked is the moment to start our vehicle. When the contact is turned on check the following points: BATTERY When the vehicle is started verify there is not any strange sound or if it is hard to start. If your UTV is going to be more than a week completely stopped, it is advisable to wait approximately 10 minutes when started before using it in order to preserve the battery. This way the engine will warm up and the battery will not suffer any power loss. DASHBOARD Daily rush makes us forget about having a look at the vehicle dashboard. Start your UTV and check there is no error signal or any suspicious warning alarm shown. Check the light change indicators, turn signals, time setting, etc.

– 1.5 bar (vehicle at full load).
