BE PREPARED FOR CEREAL DISEASE SURGE AS WARM WEATHER HITS

needs judging individually to head off infection before it gets too established. But more robust fungicide doses may be needed to cope

Rapid crop development brought on by the warm weather will also make regular crop monitoring more important, he says, so that ideal fungicide timings are not missed.

According to Mike Thornton, head of crop production for agronomy firm ProCam, rusts in wheat will need monitoring, with brown rust in particular thriving in hotter weather. But high rainfall in May and windy conditions rubbing leaves together will have favoured the spread of Septoria through crop canopies, and the arrival of warm weather will now allow this to cycle faster, he adds. “Growers need to be on their guard,” stresses Mr Thornton. “There are some good grain prices, so cereals are worth looking after, and we’ve seen the effects on disease development of wet weather followed by warmer conditions before. “There’s no single fungicide prescription. Each field 4 | AgriNews | June 2021

weeks, or if T1 fungicides were trimmed back for any reason, Mr Thornton says this is likely to increase the need for effective control.

with heightened infection pressures, and there may be an increased need for T3 fungicides – not only to control ear diseases as usual, but also to give a decent top-up against foliar disease.” If the interval between earlier T1 and T2 fungicide sprays was stretched beyond the optimum three

“It’s not just wheat that we need to be vigilant with. It’s a similar situation in barley. As well as the usual wet weather diseases of Rhynchosporium and net blotch, barley crops have been under a lot of stress, and stress is a trigger for any latent Ramularia infection to manifest. So there’s an equal need for attention to detail to keep barley healthy to protect the important grain-filling period,” he adds.

CURIOUS ABOUT VIRTUAL FENCING? VISIT GROUNDWELL TO FIND OUT MORE! Curious about virtual fencing? Visit Groundwell to speak to farmers and grazing experts using Nofence grazing technology

L

ivestock producers interested in learning about virtual fencing and how it can be used to improve their grazing systems have the opportunity to hear about the benefits of virtual fencing and speak to six different Nofence pilot farmers at Groundswell 2021 on the Nofence stand in Pasture Field C6. “Technology advances have made their way into the livestock sector with virtual fencing being the next industry game-changer,” says Synne Foss Budal, General Manager for Nofence UK. “When managed correctly, grass is one of the cheapest feeds available to UK beef producers. But with the challenges due to required infrastructure and weather variables, it is not always straightforward for farmers to take advantage of grazed forage to its fullest. Nofence grazing technology is a unique solution to overcoming many of the challenges presented when trying to intensify a grazing system.” How Nofence works Developed in Norway with more than two years of testing on UK farms, Nofence uses a combination of GPS, cellular communication, audio signals and solar power to work with animal behaviour and create a virtual fence perimeter that can be monitored and changed with a smartphone app. Picking up GPS surveying from available satellites, the app allows farmers to set virtual pasture boundaries. Livestock fitted with Nofence collars can then be turned out on the set area to

graze with no physical fencing. When an animal crosses the Nofence boundary, a three-stage audio warning will start. If the animal does not turn around when cued with the third stage of audio, it will receive an electric pulse equivalent to 1-2% shock given from standard electrical fencing. The collars which issue the pulse and track animal location are developed with solar panels to ensure long-lasting battery life throughout the grazing season. “Data collected from our farm trials show that the number of pulses administered with a virtual fence is significantly lower than those on standard electric fencing systems due to the animals quickly learning from the audio. You are still relying on the animal’s senses to stay within the grazing parameter, but it is hearing rather than visual,” explains Ms Foss Budal. The GPS trackers on the collars allow for the farmer to monitor the livestock’s grazing patterns and receive notifications if a pulse has been given. In the event of an animal breaking through a boundary, they will only receive one pulse and will not receive another pulse when entering back into the herd. On-farm application James Daniel, consultant for Precision Grazing, has been working with Nofence to set up trials on six different beef farms throughout the UK. According to him, the technology allows farmers to harness the same benefits of managed grazing as found with physical fencing, but

on areas of the farm where it otherwise would not have been possible. The Nofence grazing technology also provides greater flexibility to optimise the grazing area at that very moment in time. “This technology has been great for hill and conservation grazing systems by allowing areas to be utilised without making a significant investment into physical fencing infrastructure and allowing for better utilisation of forage that would have traditionally been set stocked,” says Mr Daniel. Wiltshire beef producer Matt Turner farms his nearly 200 head of suckler cows on Salisbury Plain with grassland running alongside a prominent watercourse. Previously, Mr Turner would only set stock graze 50 head of youngstock on the area, receiving pressure in recent years to set up permanent fencing to keep cattle out of the watercourse. Working with Mr Daniel to set up a Nofence grazing system, the farm can now use a more rotational grazing approach to the area which has allowed for greater stocking density while also keeping cattle out of the watercourse with no physical fencing. “It took the cattle about five days to properly get the hang of the virtual fence and the audio cues, but once they did, it has been brilliant in the way it has allowed us to manage grass better. Because we’re not constrained to fixed paddocks and infrastructure, we can quickly adapt to cope with variation in pasture and weather changes,” says Turner.

STABILISER CATTLE COMPANY PROGRESSES UK BEEF INDUSTRY

Stabiliser cattle compny progresses UK beef industry with first genomic enhanced EBVS

B

eef producers can now rapidly accelerate genetic progress with access to the UK’s first genomic enhanced estimated breeding values (GEBVs) for all production traits for beef animals through Stabiliser Cattle Company. “Genomic technology is a gamechanger for the beef industry, allowing producers to make databacked decisions early on in an animal’s life for faster genetic development,” explains Seth Wareing, SCC Business Manager. “This is not only extremely beneficial for pedigree producers making breeding decisions within their herds, but for commercial producers wanting to improve the genetics they bring into their herds.” Understanding genomics Thousands of genes contribute to all aspects of an animal’s life from disease resilience to carcass traits. When a DNA sample is tested and compared to a large database of similar genetic type animals, it is possible to identify the differences in the sampled animal’s genes against the larger population, therefore allowing for reliable predictions of how the sampled animal will perform in its lifetime. “Whenever you have a mating of an animal, there is going to be huge variation in the offspring – you do not get a halfway house of a dam and a sire. If you did, every animal would be consistent in everything. In reality, some animals will perform more like the dam and some will perform

more like the sire, and sometimes the offspring will outperform the sire and the dam,” says Mr Wareing. “Genomics allow us to move faster by determining if a calf is going to be a good or poor performer in particular traits so we can make educated breeding decisions to accelerate genetic improvement.” Ten years into genomic testing, the UK dairy industry has made significant strides in genetic improvement. Data from Zoetis (the DNA testing partner for SCC) shows that before genomics, the rate of gain was increasing by 100 points every five years. When sire testing started, this increased the rate of gain to 100 points every two years. However, once females were tested to allow producers to make highly accurate genetic predictions for both sides of the lineage, rate of gain accelerated to 100 points every year. “This kind of rapid genetic progress is what we are expecting to see within the Stabiliser breed within the next few years,” explains Mr Wareing. “It doesn’t matter what the trait is, if you are selecting males and females with GEBVs, you can achieve genetic progress faster than the conventional selection process.” Importance of data For genomic evaluations to be possible, a large gene pool of at least 10,000 animals is required, with accuracy increasing as the size of the gene pool increases. Nearly two years ago, SCC

started working with Zoetis to gather and analyse DNA samples through its HD50K genomicenhanced genetic evaluation, drawing on Stabiliser genetics in the UK, US and around the world. “Accuracy of data is a key part of developing genomic predictions,” explains Mr Wareing. “Since comprehensive data collection has been at the core of our multiplier model for nearly 25 years and the SCC’s link to Stabiliser genetic analysis in the US, we’ve been able to compile a large database with proven performance data in vast array of environments. Where genomics and EBVs converge Genomics provides producers with higher accuracy, more reliable EBVs for young animals, says Dr Kent Andersen, Director of Technical Services for Zoetis. “EBVs have been used for a long time to give us the best predictions of genetic merit expressed in our next generation, to allow producers to distil what component of an animal’s recorded performance is a result of the farm’s management system and what component of it is a result of its genetic merit,” says Dr Andersen. “EBVs are predictions. Until an animal is highly proven and we know it’s true breeding value, this prediction could go up or down. GEBVs jumpstart the accuracy of an EBV to get a better prediction earlier of the true breeding value for those animals.”

MAKE MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION PART OF GRASS TETANY PREVENTION

With the right management plan in place, grass tetany is preventable for beef, dairy and sheep farmers.

W

ith the right management plan in place, grass tetany is preventable for beef, dairy and sheep farmers. Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco, outlines what to include. As grass growth begins to pick up, beef, dairy and sheep producers need to implement strategic practices to prevent grass tetany, says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco. “Grazed grass is a great feed source but very low in dry matter,” she says. “This means some of the nutrient levels are diluted and it can be difficult for animals to eat sufficient levels, in particular, magnesium intake can be low resulting in magnesium deficiency, otherwise known as grass staggers, grass tetany or hypomagnesaemia.” While all grazing livestock are vulnerable to grass tetany if a magnesium deficiency is present, beef and dairy cows four to eight weeks post-calving and ewes three to four weeks post-lambing are at most risk as energy stores are stressed approaching peak lactation. “True to being referred to as grass staggers, tell-tale signs of magnesium deficiency are excitement and muscular spasms in stock. Subclinical cases typically result in decreased dry matter intakes, milk yields and body condition,” says Dr Bond. “But unfortunately, the first sign of grass tetany is typically a dead

8 | AgriNews | June 2021

animal, often with froth from the mouth and nose and signs of ground paddling.”

While salt aids in magnesium absorption, potassium and nitrogen block it.

Research indicates that 19 percent of dairy farms and 23 percent of suckler beef farms experience grass tetany. In dairy herds, 30 percent of cases result in death, with a conservative cost of approximately £2 million per annum in the UK.

“High potassium forages or fields that have been treated with nitrogen and potassium fertilisers can imbalance and interfere with magnesium absorption. If you are going to fertilise, then don’t put animals that are at high risk on to them,” says Dr Bond.

“Grass tetany is a common disease during the spring grass flush that results in loss of animals every year – however, it is completely preventable with the right management in place,” says Dr Bond. Below, she outlines six management practices to include in a grass tetany prevention plan. Offer supplementary salt At the very least, grazing stock need to be supplemented with salt since the absorption of magnesium from the rumen is dependent upon sodium. “Research has shown that without adequate sodium in the animal’s blood, the body will grab onto the most available cation, in this case, magnesium, followed by calcium. Therefore, salt licks can be a valuable supplement to ruminants grazing pasture low in sodium to help prevent grass tetany from occurring,” says Dr Bond. Minimise use of nitrogen and potassium fertilisers

High potassium will also negatively affect magnesium uptake by plants and the availability of the forage magnesium to the animal, with recommendations that the potassium level in grass should not exceed 2.5 percent. Choose your fields carefully for grazing. Not only will a field’s fertiliser programme impact magnesium levels, so will the age of the ley and species within it. “Younger, faster growing leys can present more magnesium deficiencies than older, slower growing pastures,” explains Dr Bond. “This risk can be minimised by supplementing with a palatable magnesium source or by allocating new leys to less vulnerable stock until grass growth has slowed down.” An alternative way to increase the magnesium supply to grazing stock is through the use of clovers, which contain two times the amount of magnesium than grasses.

TRAMSPREAD: NEW GSM SLURRY PUMP REMOTE LAUNCHED

Tramspread has launched a new remote control for engine driven pumps that operates using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM).

T

ramspread has launched a new remote control for engine driven pumps that operates using Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM). The Teletram 2020 GSM remote does not rely on radio connectivity and instead can connect a mobile device, using its 2G to 5G data connection, to one or multiple engine driven pumps. The remote control features a seveninch colour screen and industrial grade instrumentation that can be operated using Apple or Android mobile devices. Communication is not compromised by distance and multiple pump units can be controlled by the same device. “This means that an operator pumping over an eight-kilometre distance with four pump units will only need one device to monitor and operate all of the pump units,” explains Tramspread managing director, Terry Baker. The Teletram has been designed in collaboration

14 | AgriNews | June 2021

with automation specialists CTRL. “As little as 2G connectivity is sufficient to send commands that will control one, or multiple, pump units more safely and reliably, and the

operator can use any mobile device that can access a 2G to 5G network,” he says. This helps to address concerns that traditional radio-controlled remotes can be interrupted by others in the area using the same frequency, or that a signal may be lost when pumping long distances. The remote has sensors

for inlet pressure, outlet pressure and can monitor the slurry store level. It also has an air compressor control with an air pressure sensor. “Operators will be able to start, stop, increase and decrease the throttle, and divert from mix to field, whilst also being able to monitor the engine for low oil pressure, high coolant temperature, and low coolant level. This will help to avoid costly downtime and it also gives the operator more data and control,” says Mr Baker. The Teletram remote is controlled using one mobile device such as a smart phone or tablet. Multiple pumps can be monitored and adjusted from the tractor cab or can be handheld at the slurry source. “Our contracting division has been testing four controls since we started development three years ago and we recently sold the first commercial units to operators in Scotland and France,” explains Mr Baker.

IAN FORMAN - NSTS MANAGER Crop assurance scheme requirements for pesticide application equipment (PAE) are overall very straightforward with the annual testing of the main farm sprayer and, for those growing root crops, nematicide applicators and fogging machines too. For some of the other machines working and those that are also working in other sectors it is not always quite so clear. As you will be aware, annual testing relates to PAE used in food production, but you may also be using a weed wiper, or even a small sprayer only used for jobs such as spraying grass or game cover plots, where the sprayer would not need to be tested annually. Other sectors which include livestock assurance schemes and also amenity and horticulture, are required to follow the legal requirements of the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD). The SUD states that for sprayers over 3 metres, air blast sprayers, train and aircraft sprayers, the first test isn’t due until it is 5 years old, and then must be tested every 3 years. Booms 3 metres and under need to be tested every 6 years, but again

16 | AgriNews | June 2021

not until they are 5 years old. Other equipment that also falls into this last category include micro-granular applicators applying Avadex, slug pellet applicators, weed wipers, seed treating equipment, along with a range of other specialised application machinery. Operator check sheets are available for some of this equipment on the NSTS website and we would recommend using these if you are not having the machines tested annually. All handheld equipment, including knapsacks, do not need to be tested, but must be inspected on a regular basis, repaired if required, and a record kept of the inspection. With this in mind, NSTS have a knapsack check sheet available on the website. NSTS also promotes the accurate application of fertiliser for a variety of reasons. These include the need to protect the environment and waterways around the UK, along with field margins and hedgerows, which all help towards a more sustainable future for land managers and could become even more important as the new ELM Scheme is rolled out over

the next few years. The second factor is an economical one, most farms will spend as much on fertiliser as they do on pesticides and so accurate application is key. The NSTS spreader tray test will show precisely how evenly a product is being spread across the full working width of the machine. Thecoefficient of variation (CV) is calculated, with the purpose of achieving a CV below 10%, a very good spread pattern. With a CV of 20%, you may start to see striping in the crop, and the financial impact could be as much as £17/ha. The cost of the test can be recouped very quickly if the spreader is found to be spreading unevenly and then adjusted to give a much more even spread pattern. If you would like further information on any of the test procedures, contact NSTS at info@nsts.org.uk, or go to the website, www.nsts.org. uk where you can search for a Test Centre near you and arrange a test on your machine to ensure it is applying all your fertiliser products on target and evenly across the field.

SPRAYER TESTING

The legal requirements included in the Sustainable Use Directive (SUD) requires all pesticide application equipment (PAE) to be tested.

1

Boom sprayers over 3 metres wide, air blast sprayers, train and aircraft sprayers • First test due before the sprayer is 5 years old • All sprayers over 5 years old must have been tested within the last 3 years • Re-test every 3 years

SPEARHEAD CROWNS ATTLEFIELD MACHINERY DEALER OF THE YEAR 2020 A specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020

A

specialist machinery supplier near Daventry has been named Spearhead’s Dealer of the Year 2020. Noted for tremendous energy and after sales support, the owner, Henry White, is just 29 years old. Attlefield Farm Machinery first stocked Spearhead equipment three years ago. During the last 18 months, their sales performance placed them at the top of Spearhead’s league table. Henry White comes from a well-known family with industry heritage. His father, Patrick White, runs PJ Services, the well-known international haulage company. The White family also run farms in Poland. They used a 450-9S flex-wing topper to bring the farm back into production after 20 years of being fallow. As a youngster, this, Henry says first sparked his interest in the product. An impressive single site dealer In his early 20s, Henry started selling quad bikes. Today, he operates from brand new purpose-built premises with Spearhead equipment at the helm. The Hellidon site includes fully stocked showrooms, offices, and wellrun workshops. For a fledgling dealer, the level of investment 20 | AgriNews | June 2021

and product knowledge is impressive. After sales service is a huge focus for Attlefield Farm Machinery. Stocking plenty of Spearhead parts, they strive to get machinery back in the field quickly. They also deliver parts - next day – with regular demand from across the UK and Europe. Notably, Henry says: “Holding a continual stock of the renowned Multicut 460, 620, and the impressive new Sniper series flail mowers has been key to our success. They are the type of item you must be able to supply immediately.” Attlefield and Spearhead teamwork Attlefield Farm Machinery’s success is also down to the fantastic relationship between themselves and Spearhead. Working closely with Jack Norton (Spearhead Area Sales Manager) Henry is always on the front foot with Spearhead developments. He is also in daily contact with Steven Nel (Spearhead Parts Manager) in Spearhead’s parts department, ensuring he is carrying the correct items to support Spearhead’s wide range of products. The dealer’s success has been helped by nurturing this teamwork. Says Henry:

“I’m delighted Attlefield Farm Machinery has been named Spearhead Dealer of the Year.

It’s great recognition for the team here and I’m happy to keep building on the high standards that we have set ourselves. To my advantage, Spearhead takes centre stage here and I believe we give the brand the energy and attention it rightly deserves. There’s incredible demand for robust mowing and cutting machines across the UK. I couldn’t be prouder to align my business with the quality of Spearhead.” Jack Norton recently presented Attlefield Farm Machinery’s trophy to Henry. Spearhead nominates a Dealer of the Year annually, basing the decision on dealer promise and success. Spearhead Machinery Ltd was established in 1988. The company specialises in the design and manufacture of rotary mowers and mulchers, flail mowers, and reach arm mowers for vegetation management and control. Spearhead machines are designed to last. Built with no shortage of strength, they are renowned as extremely tough pieces of equipment with an extensive service life.

TRACTORS AND FORAGE HARVESTERS TAKE THE LEAD John Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows operators to guide a tractor and trailer

J

ohn Deere Machine Sync enables machines to exchange data on the move and allows combine operators to guide a tractor and trailer alongside the harvester. This unique system is now also available for forage harvesters and tractors to take control during other crop unloading operations. Machine Sync was introduced in 2012 and John Deere remains the only supplier of an integrated system. The technology is especially useful during night-time operations and long working days. The global navigation satellite system (GNNS) based synchronisation allows combines to automatically control the speed and travel

28 | AgriNews | June 2021

direction of tractors and trailers relative to the combine. Machine Sync therefore makes harvesting safer and reduces stress for the operators. It also eliminates waste during unloading and avoids damage to both machines and crops, even at higher driving speeds. The technology is not just applicable to combine harvesters but also to all harvesting processes where crops are continuously loaded into trailers. As a result, John Deere is now offering Machine Sync for use on self-propelled forage harvesters and tractors. In particular, customers working with trailed elevator machinery harvesting

potatoes, carrots and vegetables will benefit from this advanced technology. The system also delivers significant assistance and productivity gains to vegetable growers during planting applications. For operation, Machine Sync requires JDLink telematics, a StarFire satellite receiver and a Gen4 Premium display with automation activation. Most customers would select all these components exfactory when ordering a new tractor and/or self-propelled machine, although retrofitting is also possible.

NEW STUDY IDENTIFIES GENOMIC PATHWAY TO HEAVIER EGGS

A study by Synomics, has identified a way to improve egg weights in laying hens

A

study by Synomics, the biological insights business, has identified a way to improve egg weights in laying hens by analysing variations within specific genes and then targeting birds with those gene variations for selected breeding. The weight of an egg varies between 50 and 70g depending mainly on the age of the hen and on its genotype. Egg weight is a highly heritable trait, meaning much of the variance between hens is a result of genetics; it is also hugely important when it comes to poultry farmers’ profitability. 30 | AgriNews | June 2021

heavier egg has an obvious impact on the speed of any Synomics analysed data subsequent research and from more than 1,000 laying hens which each had development. Peter Kristensen, chief more than 295,000 Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms executive of Synomics, said the business has (SNPs – pronounced developed the platform ‘Snips’). SNPs influence to enable animal and how genes function and crop scientists and regulate gene traits, such producers to get a better as egg weight. understanding of what drives key production In this study, Synomics traits and innovate detected precisely 2,018 accordingly: “We are giving highly predictive SNPs scientists, farmers and which found 122 genes food producers the ability as potential targets for to learn more about the intervention. When it is considered that a hen animals they breed and the crops that they grow with could have upwards of insights they have not been 20,000 genes, being previously able to liberate able to narrow down the scientists’ search to 122 from the data they already that could hold the key to a hold.”

‘WE RISK SHOOTING OURSELVES IN THE FOOT WITH SLOWER GROWING BIRDS’ By Matt Donald; pig & poultry farmer, north Yorkshire

B

y Matt Donald, pig & poultry farmer, north Yorkshire

May saw the Pig and Poultry Fair go online with a day of online forums, it was a great day with some informative forums put together to learn from. I miss knowledge transfer in person however, online meetings work well, but you learn just as much when you have a drink at the bar after as you do during the presentations. I was fortunate enough to chair the ‘Success with the slower growing bird’ forum. With both Charles Bourns, who has experience in growing the slower growing bird and Patrick Nicholls of Hubbard who gave a great insight into how to make the bird a success.

It made me think further about slower growing birds and what they mean for the industry, we had discussions around how to promote this to the consumer. We should be proud as an industry of our fantastic welfare standards, existing commercial broiler units have taken welfare to a new level in recent years with modernising facilities combined with added windows, perches and bales. There is a place on the shelf for the slower grown bird, however it should not be promoted as better than today’s welfare standards, or we risk shooting ourselves in the foot. Poultry markets have seen consistent growth over recent years because chicken is a great versatile product, that is also affordable. There is a home for top shelf, niche poultry, but many consumers of today turn to chicken

because they can feed their family a healthy meal and still have some change for a desert. These birds are easier to grow, potentially use less antibiotics, lower mortality but will cost more, so can we let the consumer decide what is demanded instead of being NGO driven? Combine this with growing pressure for farms to lower their carbon footprint, given the extra resources required such as water, feed and space, in an environment where people do not want to live near farms, then in my eyes it remains a niche product within this country. Mainly because as far as welfare is concerned, we are already on track with red tractor assured chicken. I would like to see Greta Thunberg tell you which is best for its planet saving credentials?

HOW MUCH OF A THREAT DOES LAB GROWN MEAT POSE TO THE INDUSTRY? By Charles Bourns; Broiler grower, Gloucestershire.

I

understand the preoccupation with the Australian trade deal not, for any increased competition it will bring, but for the fact they want their goods to come in tariff-free. If it were to happen, it would set a very dangerous precedent for other deals in the future, especially chicken from the USA. If this were to happen, it would probably worry the Brazilians as much as us. In my old role at Copa Cogeca, I met up with the Australian Farmers organisation in Brussels three years ago and they said they would not have much product to send to us if there was a trade agreement.

will look and feel like meat.

I mention this because I become very frustrated that we are not spending more time promoting what we do to consumers and celebrity chefs rather than talking about cheap imports that may or may not come in. They will not unless someone orders them, a fact that is lost to some. We know we need some imports as we are regretfully not self sufficient due to carcase balance. Maybe we need more videos like the ones produced by a farmer’s daughter called Bethan Edwards. If you have not seen them, I recommend you do; they are on Linkedin But have we taken our eye off and YouTube. what I believe is an equally important homegrown threat We have had some good coming down the line in the news from Brussels this form of synthetic products? month as it looks as if Recently, I was watching the processed animal protein news and there was a report (PAP) will be licenced for use about a sausage produced again in September of this by a company called Ivy year in Europe. It is being Farm Technologies, an seen as very much part of offshoot of Oxford University, the campaign to replace soya which is going to grow meat and I believe Dale Meats has in a laboratory from stem built a rendering plant that cells taken from animals. will be able to keep pig and poultry products separate. The report said meat demand It is good news because it worldwide will increase by will put a value into a waste 70% by 2050 and lab grown product. meat will account for 35% by 2035. This meat is different I also attended a Zoom in to plant-based products as it America that was about

waste and it was reported that one third of all available food goes uneaten, a very sobering fact. The participants then discussed what companies such as Wendy’s (soon to start opening in the UK) are doing about it. Apparently, if this amount of waste was cut in half we could feed three billion more people. Waste is a big subject but there is the opportunity everywhere to cut it down, whether it be by increasing hatchability, and reducing mortality and rejects in the factory. I will leave it to your imagination to see the opportunity waste or lack of it could do to improve the industry’s profitability. At home everything is going along in the usual way I just wish the weather would warm up as so far this year we have used almost as much gas as we used in the whole of last year which will do wonders for my CCL agreement. Lastly, I would like to wish two elder statesmen of our industry a very happy birthday in June and they are Aled Griffiths and Derek Kelly who thanks to COVID restrictions missed celebrating in style last year.

STEVE BIRCHALL FOUNDER AND OWNER OF STEVE BIRCHALL POULTRY SERVICES

“It’s not the most glamourous job, but we take price in what we do and the end result is rewarding” WHAT IS YOUR JOB IN A NUTSHELL? I am the founder and owner of Steve Birchall Poultry Services and I have three teams who travel the country cleaning all types of poultry houses. We even strip wash and rebuild traditional free range units, sell second hand diesel washers and supply a range of government approved soaps and disinfectants to your customers. HOW DID YOU END UP WHERE YOU ARE TODAY?

At a young age I was always on my grandad’s allotment, after school and at weekends helping out, or as he would call it “being a pain”. I had a fascination with the fancy fowl he kept; he taught me the basics, taught me to care.

at christmas. Working with Shaver breeds and broilers for Moy Park, I was farm manager for the last 8 years of my employment there.

So, in 1970 aged 15 and much to my dad’s disapproval, I left secondary school and went to start my working life at Maple Leaf Hatcheries in Lancashire, I attended Hutton Agricultural College on day release. Maple Leaf was local and to this day I still live in the area. I started work on one of their breeder sites and continued with the same company for the next 15 years.

During my time at Maple Leaf, I got to know many poultry farmers and one asked me if I fancied washing his poultry house for him. And so it began. I invested in a small van and with a 1500psi electric washer, off I went. As i got busier, I started to employ people to help. In the beginning it was mainly broiler sites but the expansion of traditional free-range and now multi-tier systems means those now make up most of our customer base.

I worked on caged sites, broiler sites, rearing farms and even did turkeys

In 1985, Maple Leaf closed and I was made redundant.

We travel all over the country keeping the poultry industry clean.

BRP TO INTRODUCE ELECTRIC MODELS BY THE END OF 2026

BRP to invest £300 million over the next five years to electrify its existing product lines by the end of 2026

T

he first product is expected to be introduced to the market within the next two years, followed by a rapid roll-out across all product lines. BRP is developing its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology in-house which will be leveraged across all product lines. BRP is creating an Electric Vehicle Development Centre in Canada, which will focus on the “energy side”: the charger and the battery pack, as well as the complete integration into the vehicle, and a second pole of development in Austria, which will focus on the “torque side”: the inverter and the high performance electric motor. BRP is actively recruiting to expand its EV team of experts. BRP announced its five-year plan where it will offer electric models in each of its product lines by the end of 2026. To achieve this, BRP plans to invest $300M over five years in product development, specialised equipment, infrastructure, production tooling and facilities. “We have always said electrification was not a question of ‘if’ but a question of ‘when’. Today, we’re very excited to unveil more details of our plan to deliver market-shaping products that will enhance the consumer experience by offering new

electric options,” said José Boisjoli, President and CEO. “We are leveraging our engineering know-how and innovation capabilities to define the best strategy for developing electric-powered products,” he added. After developing and evaluating several concepts, BRP has made the bold decision to develop its Rotax modular electric powerpack technology which will be leveraged across all product lines enhancing the consumer experience by offering new electric options. To achieve this, BRP is expanding its Rotax electric power unit development infrastructure in Gunskirchen, Austria, and is also creating the BRP Electric Vehicle Development Centre, located in its hometown of Valcourt, Quebec, Canada. This facility will feature state-of-the-art equipment, including several sophisticated test benches and dynamometers, plus an ultramodern robotised manufacturing cell for electric batteries. “We are thrilled to create our EV expertise centre, taking steps into the world of electrification,’’ said Bernard Guy, Senior Vice-President, Global Product Strategy. “Experts on our EV team will feel the agility of a startup environment but will benefit from BRP’s financial resources

and state-of-the-art equipment to design our in-house technology,” he added. BRP’s electric path In early 2019, BRP acquired assets of Alta Motors, an electric motorcycle manufacturer, and commercialised the Rotax Sonic E-Kart, which is currently in operation at the Rotax MAX Dome in Linz, Austria. A few months later, it showcased e-concepts at Club BRP 2019 to give a glimpse of what the future could hold for both its current product lines and for other potential segments. BRP has produced several batteryelectric, hybrid-electric and even fuel cell-electric vehicles over the years. Today’s announcement brings BRP’s electric journey further into focus, with a clear vision and firm plans to roll out its electric products. Expanding BRP’s electric vehicle development team The R&D team is expanding quickly, and BRP is recruiting for several positions as it moves to the next phase of its electric propulsion technology development. With involvement from Quebec, Austria, Finland and the United States, BRP’s top talent worldwide, including hundreds of engineers and specialised technicians, will work together to develop and produce electric vehicles at BRP.
