MAGNESIUM SUPPLEMENTATION IS ESSENTIAL

Magnesium supplementation is essential as wet spring extends grass staggers period

Magnesium supplementation is essential as wet spring extends grass staggers period

While this year’s wet spring has resulted in the early grass growth curve being well ahead of the running average, it has caused an increased risk of grass staggers on beef, dairy and sheep farms, says Dr Alison Bond, nutritionist for Rumenco.

“Grazed grass is a great feed source but very low in dry matter. When conditions are wet, this further decreases dry matter intakes,” she says. “This means some of the nutrient levels are diluted and it can be difficult for animals to eat sufficient levels, in particular, magnesium intake can be low resulting in magnesium deficiency, otherwise known as grass staggers, grass tetany or hypomagnesaemia.”

Other early grazing factors also contribute to magnesium deficiencies, including high potassium levels and rumen degradable proteins locking up magnesium availability.

Due to this season’s conditions, Dr Bond says the typical grass staggers window has been extended, with producers likely to have forage diluted in nutrient levels well into June.

Stock most at risk are late lambing ewes that are three to four weeks post-lambing and cattle that are four to eight weeks post-calving. These stock are at peak lactation and energy stores are stressed.

Mitigating risk with a magnesium supplement

To mitigate the risk of grass staggers, Dr Bond recommends producers provide cattle and sheep with a palatable supplement.

“Magnesium is very bitter, so supplementation needs to be provided in a way that animals will consume it,” says Dr Bond.

Rumenco has a large range of magnesium-enriched supplements that can be fed in molassed buckets, high energy feed blocks or as a soluble liquid to be added to drinking water.

Rumenco magnesium buckets and blocks have been formulated to cover up the bitterness and increase intake while also offering additional benefits to cattle and sheep.

“A huge benefit of supplying magnesium through a low moisture bucket or feed block is an increase in forage utilisation by upwards of 10 percent. As livestock lick the feed, the increased release of saliva buffers the highly concentrated levels of sugar and energy flowing to the rumen. This, in turn, helps cattle and sheep make the most of the available forage on offer,” says Dr Bond. “Fortified with minerals, vitamins and trace elements, they also work to support animal health and performance – making them a multi-purpose product.”

If using a water-soluble supplement, Dr Bond advises that livestock must not have access to any other water source, such as puddles, to ensure intakes are achieved.

CONTINENTAL: TREAD CAREFULLY ON WET GROUND

A wet start to the green harvest season has left grassland particularly susceptible to compaction

Awet start to the green harvest season following a dry winter has left grassland particularly susceptible to compaction. Operating heavy machines such as tractors with triple mowers or forage harvesters on soft soils can cause irreparable soil and sward damage suggests Tom Godwin from Continental:

“Operators can benefit by referring to manufacturer data to set pressures that are better suited to ground conditions. The spring rain has left the crop long and wet, which is locking in more soil moisture and adding to the risk of soil compaction. If the sward is damaged during first and second cuts it could cause yield reductions in future cuts, especially in multi-cut systems” he says.

Adjusting the pressure of a tyre changes the footprint which allows the weight of the vehicle to be spread over a larger surface area.

“If the tyre pressure is

lowered in wet conditions the operator will achieve greater grip, be able to operate more efficiently and the tyres will travel over the land with less resistance, which will reduce the risk of soil

“The app is an easy way for farmers in the field to see what pressure their tyres should be, based on the axle load of their machine,” says Mr Godwin.

For contractors seeking an easier way to mitigate the weight of machinery on soft soils, VF tyres offer the ability to run at 40% lower pressure than standard radial tyres. In addition, new hybrid block pattern tyres are better suited to grassland work.

compaction and improve fuel efficiency,” explains Mr Godwin.

Establishing the load of the vehicle is critical to establishing the correct tyre pressure. Technical data sheets are available from most major manufacturer websites, but Continental also offers a mobile app. The ‘Agriculture TyreTech’ App is available for iOS and Android. Using a

“Continental has invested heavily in new tyre technology to help reduce soil compaction and improve the operational efficiencies of machinery. Adjusting tyre pressure to suit the ground conditions is vital for soil health and the harvests of the future,” he concludes.

DEVON & CORNWALL POLICE REVEAL FORCE TRACTOR

Devon & Cornwall Police reveal force tractor to spread awareness of rural crime

Devon & Cornwall Police has revealed an usual new member of its South Devon Rural team; a John Deere 6110M tractor decked out in distinctive police livery.

The tractor has been loaned to the force free of charge until the end of September by local agricultural and turf dealership, Masons Kings, and will be soon seen across the region at agricultural shows and other summer events.

The Rural Affairs Team will use the tractor to raise awareness of the support the police can give to those who are concerned about, or affected by, issues such

as theft of machinery and GPS equipment, or livestock rustling and worrying. The new addition is part of a wider effort from across the force to increase community messaging within the rural areas of Devon and Cornwall.

Police Constable Clarke Orchard said: “A huge part of our job is to connect to, and be visible in, our rural and agricultural communities. We work with local police neighbourhood teams to tackle rural crime and antisocial behaviour anywhere in our counties.

“While this vehicle won’t be used operationally, it will be seen at various shows across the region, sparking conversations with farmers, highlighting crime prevention

strategies, and engaging with those who might not interact with police teams normally.”

Peter Endacott, Masons Kings General Manager, said: “Masons Kings works very closely with all our farming customers and we are very conscious of security of the high value of equipment that is held on farms. We are pleased to be working alongside Devon & Cornwall Police, raising awareness and sharing best practices, and using the best technology to help secure customer assets.”

NEW: FENDT TELEHANDLER DEBUTS AT FTMTA

Fend has announced a new partnership with dealership Arwel’s Agri Services based near Lampeter, mid-Wales.

Fendt has chosen to debut its innovative Cargo T740 telehandler with its elevating cab design at this years’ FTMTA event. The telehandler will be part of a packed Fendt stand that will also include the new 728 Gen 7 tractor and Tigo forage wagon.

“FTMTA is an important event in the agricultural calendar and we wanted to bring a cross section of Fendt machinery that reflects the needs of farmers in Ireland. We therefore have a focus on tractors in the 100-200 horsepower sector that can be specified with loaders, whilst also showing the future with the new 728 Gen 7 tractor,” says Fendt’s Richard Miller.

The Fendt 211, 312 and 516 Vario tractors chosen for the stand have all been fitted with Fendt’s Cargo loader to illustrate the benefits of the tractors for grassland system work. The Tigo forage wagon further demonstrates the

progress Fendt has made in this sector.

“The Tigo is a popular product in Ireland because the range offers capacities of 22 to 45 cubic metres in a compact design that is up to 20% shorter than rivals,” he adds.

The Fendt Cargo loader, fitted to the tractors at the event, is also an increasingly attractive option for operators buying lower horsepower Fendt tractors. It makes even the smallest 200 Vario a capable loading machine which can reduce fuel costs and help access to

small spaces.

“There will be three tractor and loader combinations on display to demonstrate the versatility of the Fendt range for loading work. The panoramic view from the cab, intuitive joystick controls and weighing functionality all help to make a 200, 300 or 500 tractor a capable and comfortable loading machine,” says Mr Miller.

The current Fendt 724 Gen 6 tractor will feature on the stand with the incoming 728 Gen 7 as a way to illustrate the progress the brand has made in both engine technology and efficiency.

“The Gen 6 has been a tremendously successful tractor throughout Europe, and the new 728 with its AGCO power unit, higher output and greater efficiencies will uphold Fendt’s reputation in the mid horsepower sector. FTMTA will be a unique opportunity to see both and ask our team questions about all the products on show,” he concludes.

CEREALS WILL SHOWCASE CONNECTED FENDT FLEET

Fendt will focus on new technology and new models at Cereals on june 13th & 14th to demonstrate a data driven advantage

Fendt will focus on new technology and new models at Cereals on June 13th and 14th to demonstrate how its machines provide operators with a data driven advantage. It will also be the first time for an arable audience to see the new 700 Vario Gen 7 tractor which was launched earlier this year.

The 700 series Vario will be accompanied by models either side of the horsepower range, with the latest Gen 3 500 series and Gen 7 900 series also featuring on the stand. Fendt’s Richard Miller commented:

“This will be an excellent opportunity for customers old and new to see the latest tractors. The Fendt stand

will also include the latest Rogator 600 MY23 selfpropelled sprayer, the IDEAL combine, and the innovative Cargo T740 with its elevating cab.”

Connecting all the latest Fendt machinery is the FendtONE onboard/offboard operating concept. The, now familiar, Fendt cab uses the operating system to make data collected by machines easier to share, both between Fendt machines and with farm management systems.

“FendtONE facilitates data driven farming to offer operators and farm managers the ability to optimise machinery and operator hours, by programming tractors,

sprayers and combines to share data,” he adds.

In the cab, FendtONE sees three terminals available in every Fendt tractor whilst software on a desktop or mobile device interprets data from tractors in the fleet in real time. This can help to reduce fuel usage and downtime whilst improving the productivity of the tractors and other machinery.

“Data is driving arable farming to be more automated, efficient, and productive. Fendt has met the challenges of arable farming head on by providing the most efficient machines with technology that can harness and take advantage of data,” concludes Mr Miller.

WHEN THE TIME IS RIGHT TO CHANGE A TRACTOR

Landini: When the time is right to change a tractor - choices for renewing your fleet

Tractors have a rather long working life, the duration of which depends on many factors, primarily the level of maintenance and the hours the machine has been in the field. We have talked about the great value of maintenance in several articles. It is essential to take good care of your vehicle, both for better quality and safety of work and so that you do not end up changing parts or having to buy a new model much sooner than expected. That’s why Landini has created Scheduled Maintenance Programmes, designed for the well-being of the machine, the farmer and the business, with a dedicated Landini team

and guaranteed service, for a tractor that always works at high performance.

DISCOVER THE LANDINI SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME

Added to this is a statistic that is extremely variable depending on the history of the company using the tractor: the hours the tractor has actually worked in the field. As an example, a modern tractor has an average life of 15,000 hours, which is supposed to be completed in 10-15 years. This has changed a lot in the last 20 years, which is why today you can see very different machines

within the same fleet, modern tractors and vehicles that are 30 to 40 years old but still operate well.

This is because for a long time the agricultural sector has been characterised by a high ageing rate and only in recent years has it caught up with other sectors by innovating technology on machines and halving their weight. The target audience has also changed, seeing fewer and fewer small companies in favour of more structured agricultural businesses, with greater demands for state-of-the-art machinery fleets.

TRANSPORT AND MACHINERY SAFETYIMPORTANCE OF MAINTENANCE

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate the agriculture endures

Transport and machinery are the biggest contributor to the high fatality rate that agriculture endures. Here are some simple ways you can reduce the risk and keep you, and others, safe.

One of the easiest ways of keeping yourself safe is by ensuring all the equipment you require is properly maintained and therefore suitable for the intended tasks. This can apply to any piece of equipment you run, for instance tractors, trailers, ATVs, towed appliances, farm vehicles, handheld machines etc.

Daily and regular checks

By completing daily checks before commencing use of the machine or vehicle, you are more likely to notice any possible defects that could prevent the task being carried out safely.

In addition to this, regular maintenance checks completed by a dealership are also recommended to ensure any defects that are not highlighted on daily checks are addressed. This can ensure that small issues are repaired before they escalate and have a bigger financial and safety impact.

Maintenance. Why you should care.

Ensuring your machines and transport are well maintained will also ensure it is running efficiently and therefore likely to reduce long term costs associated with the machine, while also having the potential to increase its longevity.

A well-maintained vehicle or machine is more likely to be complaint with what is considered roadworthy. As such, if an incident should occur (that is not your fault), you are likely to be in a more favourable position if your vehicle or machine is well maintained.

Fertiliser prices continue to remain high, which makes it ever more important to ensure accurate application of fertilisers again this season. Think about all of the factors that affect spreading, weather and field conditions, operator training and making best use of the technology available all have an impact on accuracy, but with time constraints some of these aspects may get overlooked.

Having a correctly set up machine will also help you meet obligations to protect the environment. NVZ rules and Farming Rules for Water requires farmers to apply fertiliser as accurately as possible to reduce the risk of pollution. Including a border spreading check when having a spreader tested will help meet these requirements, especially when spreading near watercourses.

Advice from AHDB last year suggested in some cases a 20% reduction from RB209 recommended rates for machines not set up accurately. MY GLASS IS HALF FULL, DESPITE THE INDUSTRY’S PROBLEMS

I’ve been grappling recently with how to balance the increasing need to raise the profile of industry issues without sounding negative all the time. As someone with an outlook more akin to a glass half full rather than a glass half empty, increased media coverage of the challenges facing food and farming in recent weeks has contributed to this conundrum.

The Farm to Fork Summit on food security, which Prime Minster Rishi Sunak hosted at 10 Downing Street in May has sparked many a viewpoint, but I personally feel that the event marked a significant step in providing the recognition of the strategic importance of British food and farming. It also means that the Prime Minister kept to the promise to host a summit which he made last year during

a hustings event at the NFU headquarters.

We don’t want or need empty promises and whilst there may be a long way to go to reap any significant rewards, we must recognise that positive steps are being made in the right direction and we need more of these steps to come to fruition.

The summit itself included announcements on reviews into fairness in the egg supply chain, a commitment to not merge the Groceries Code Adjudicator with the Competition and Markets Authority and an additional investment of up to around £30 million to unlock the potential of precision breeding. In addition to this there was also a focus on international trade and the government made a number of commitments on issues relating to future Free Trade Agreements and export opportunities for farmers, many of these areas we have been highlighting for some

time.

It’s imperative that UK food security is taken seriously by the government, and everybody has a role to play in highlighting its importance. Sometimes without knowing it, we are all lobbyists in some capacity or another. We need to collectively keep up the momentum and demonstrate the impacts the challenges being faced by the industry are having not only today but also the likelihood of future consequences on domestic food production.

Thinking back to the challenge of ensuring the key messages and asks are well understood by those in a position of power – we all need to continue to beat that drum alongside awareness that positivity in terms of the outlook for the industry is becoming more important than ever and this will help to ensure that there is a future for the sector moving forwards.

At a major chicken industry conference in Bristol, delegates heard how to get ahead in challenging times. Michael Barker reports.

Environmental sustainability, the rise of the discounters and avian flu were among the big topics up for discussion at the South West Chicken Association’s annual conference in Bristol on April 25.

With the threat of climate change and the need to farm with the environment front of mind, John Reed, non-executive director at Avara Foods, kicked off the event by describing the poultry supplier’s internal brand, For Good. The strategy focuses around five key areas: People, Planet, Animals, Communities and Consumers.

“It’s about doing our best to do good,” he explained. “We need to be proud of what we do and stand up and say it.” Avara subscribes to the 3 Rs approach of reduce, replace and recycle, Reed said, and is focused on replacing products and services that are not sustainable for ones that are, such as zero-carbon electricity in place of non-renewable energy sources. He also fired a broadside at businesses that simply offset all their emis-

sions, saying: “We can’t just keep planting trees. There’s too much greenwashing going on.”

On the environment front, energy, water, waste, plastics and biodiversity are key focus areas for Avara, which has committed to being net zero by 2040. It has several earlier milestones too, including aiming to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% by 2030, and its Scope 3 (supply chain) emissions by 28% by the same date, from a 2019 baseline.

Robust data and a scientific approach is essential to success, Reed suggested. To that end, the company has been collecting data from 75 sample farms and using the Agrecalc carbon calculator to measure its progress.

“We hope to be able to share data with farms to allow them to benchmark and understand how to improve,” he explained. One of the toughest areas for reducing a poultry business’s footprint is feed, with soya the biggest contributor. The company has been trialling the solution du jour, black soldier fly, and while Reed suggested it’s not a silver bullet, it could become part of the mix once the UK regulatory environment allows it. It is also looking at precision nutrition.

Elsewhere he revealed that Avara Foods has made commitments to playing its part in addressing issues relating to the River Wye – which is failing its consent and was described by Reed as the “biggest single issue in Herefordshire

by far”.

“Rivers are failing and big fingers are being pointed at the poultry industry, unfairly in some respects,” said Reed, who nevertheless cautioned that poultry manure contains phosphates, which can find its way into rivers through soil diffusion.

“There are more catchment areas that will have restrictions imposed. We have said we will be accountable for our bit.”

Aldi pride in supplier relationships

Moving onto retail, Josh Smith, buying director at Aldi UK, pointed out that the discounter is now the third-largest seller of meat in the UK, and the second-largest of poultry behind Tesco. The German-owned chain overtrades on poultry by £157m, selling 3.75m packs per week.

“I’m proud to say that poultry is bigger in value than pork, beef and lamb combined,” he said, adding that the store only sells 100% fresh British poultry, led by key supplier 2 Sisters Food Group.

Smith stressed that while the business has a laser focus on customers and its affordable price proposition, its partnership with suppliers is equally important. He noted that the Groceries Code Adjudicator has named Aldi best-performing retailer in terms of its reputation among suppliers in seven of the last eight years, which he stressed was particularly

MORE NEW DEALERS FOR CORVUS OFFROAD VEHICLES

Alan McCracken ATV services and Roberts Rural are the latest dealers to join the Corvus dealer network.

Alan McCracken

ATV Services and Roberts Rural are the latest dealers to join the Corvus Off-Road Vehicles dealer network. The announcement comes from BOSS ORV, the sole UK distributor of the Corvus UTV range. Allan McCracken started his business twenty-eight years ago following working for another Yamaha dealer. Based in Castle Douglas, the dealership offers sales and service of ATV’s, walk-behind and ride-on mowers in a thirty-mile radius of the 18th century market town.

“We’re delighted to welcome Allan McCracken and his team as our latest dealership appointment in Scotland,” says Phil Everett, BOSS ORV’s Managing Director. “I have known Alan for over twenty-five years and the quality of service he provides is second to none. I’m looking forward to working with Alan again and developing the Corvus brand in this part of South

West Scotland.” The dealership is well known in the region for selling ATV’s but until now had no off-road utility vehicle offering. The Corvus, Alan says, is ideal for the area and he is pleased to put his name behind a such reputable manufacturer.

Chard in Somerset is the home of Roberts Rural, who has become the authorised Corvus dealer of the area. A familyrun business covering the southwest they supply new and used UTV’s including the new Corvus electric

EX4, diesel and petrol range.

“Welcome to Roberts Rural as our new dealer in Somerset,” says Phil Everett. “It’s great to have John Parry and Ed Cousins on board and we’re looking forward to working with them in this important region.” Roberts Rural provides machinery and parts sales, servicing and maintenance to a range of business sectors including Local Authorities, forestry,

groundscare, agriculture, equine and game keeping.

They will provide Corvus with coverage across Somerset, Devon and Dorset.
