Céad Míle Fáilte, We are delighted to present you with the sale catalogue for the hotly-anticipated 2023 Genetic Gems Hereford sale alongside the complete dispersal of the renowned FH herd.

The Genetic Gems journey to date has been a hugely positive experience for all concerned, coupled that with the fact that the Hereford Breed is efficient, hardy and productive, has the ability to survive and thrive in all environments leading to superior tasting beef, while adding value to your business.

We believe that the breed has substantially more to offer, and intend to create a showcase which further strengthens the Breeds standings and creates awareness amongst perspective purchasers.

To date, the Genetic Gems has set and smashed National female records in its first two years, while also making it acceptable to see the Hereford breed soar into five figure sums. Previous Gems are also shining bright, claiming numerous red rosettes across the Country Assembling this catalogue of Genetic Gems was no easy challenge, encompassing the country’s most highly regarded herds where the most sought-after genetics rest, we believe that this catalogue of Genetic Gems offers something special for everyone.

This year the Genetic Gems sale comprises of cow & calf pairings, in-calf and maiden heifers along with embryos from some of the most proven female lines that the country has to offer, alongside the FH Hereford Complete Dispersal of five standout in-calf cows and calves. We, along with the breeders believe that these lots are an ideal addition to any existing herds or the perfect foundation to establish a new herd upon.

Sally Rose is the first heifer from the Sally line at the Ringfort herd that has been offered for sale. Sally was crowned Reserve Munster Heifer of the Year in 2023.

This follows on from 2022 when both the Munster Heifer and Bull of the Year came from the Sally line including her full brother Cristobal, who went on to win All Ireland Male and Reserve Overall Champion at the National Show 2022.

F H Hereford Complete Dispersal

The Harrington name is synonymous with pedigree livestock breeding and especially with the Hereford breed. The herd was started in 1956 and has maintained a breeding herd of cows which now reside at Ballinafad House under the FH prefix and under the watchful eye of Frank Harrington.

The first pedigree heifer was purchased in 1956 by William Harrington from Val McDonnell, Lacken House, Co. Roscommon. Lacken Queen Regnant became the foundation female of the herd and the very successful Queen line. She was sired by Bawn Killindini whose sire Killoughter Bird was crowned champion at the RDS. Her dam Lacken Ida by Cloverhill Start, who had both Vern and Tarrington bloodlines, was a massive cow with an abundance of milk, which is something that has carried through in the Queen line today. The Queen line has produced a string of class winners and show champions across Ireland, UK and Denmark but more importantly, have continued to breed on for their new owners. Frank has a great love for this Queen family and says, “it never misses”. It is fitting as Frank disperses his beloved FH Herefords, that LOT 21 is FH Queen Regnant, showing the power and influence that a strong female line can have on a herd!!

In more recent years Frank has added the Bonny line to his herd. Following a visit to the Mara Herd of Bob Borwick based in the UK, Frank set his eyes on Mara Bonny 38th. A cow with power and bloodlines to match, Frank knew she would fit in with his females at FH Herefords. Unable to do a deal on the day, Frank followed Bonny 38th to the Mara dispersal and purchased her and her heifer calf Bonny 46th. This line has proved hugely successful as can be seen by the quality of stock included in the sale, offering size, power and outcross genetics.

On the sire side Frank was always on the lookout for the best bulls and genetics to use on the herd. Some of the earliest bulls used included Beaghmore Pirate, Ardnapondra Capital & Churchtown Miracle and then moving on to possibly the most influential Canadian bull ever used in Ireland, Standard Lad 93J and more recently Yarram Unique P160 and Yarram Unique F181. With regard to the Yarram bulls, semen rights were secured by Frank himself showing the efforts he was willing to go to, in order to get the right bull.

Over the years there has been many visitors to the herd from all over the world. One visit that stands out for Frank was a delegation of breeders from Canada which included Jim Hole, the breeder of “93J”. During their visit they commented that the cows were some of the best and most consistent that they had seen and were very impressed with their udders and milking ability. This is something that Frank is very proud of!

This complete dispersal offers a unique opportunity to be part of breeding history. The Queen & Bonny lines have been consistent breeders across Ireland and the UK for over 80 years and this is your chance to be part of their future.
