MONICA CZUKERBERG

Monica Czukerberg investigates themes of environmental protection and sustainability through an abstract realistic language rooted in Mexican traditions. Finding her primary inspiration in nature, the artist represents the magnificence of our planet, blending impressions of landscapes she has seen with imaginary ones. Her paintings are odes to the bounty of Creation, expressed in a joyful palette of rich blues, reds, fuchsias, and greens.

With a background in architecture Czukerberg takes a structural and textural approach to her practice. Over a base of acrylic wash on linen canvas she applies plastics, paper, leaves, flowers, and various other types of natural or recycled materials. Once they dry, she removes them, adding details with a brush or palette knife, using acrylic, oil, pastels, charcoal, or other media. The overlaid silhouettes create delicate yet vivid remembrances of tropical flora and oneiric sceneries. Rejecting hard edges and outlines, Czukerberg conjures atmospheres that are ethereal and in constant flow, punctuating the movement of nature through seasonal and meteorological changes, as seen in works such as Bailes Marinos (Marine Dances), Brotes de Vida (Sprouts of Life), and Anochecer (Nightfall). Recently, Czukerberg has been fabricating sculptures with textiles and discarded objects that echo the makeshift constructions of Mexico’s pueblos magicos–small towns valued for their cultural and historical significance–built by incorporating trash and recycled materials.

Czukerberg holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Universidad Anáhuac del Norte, in Mexico City, and is completing her MFA at the Miami International University of Art and Design. She exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions in Mexico and the United States and appeared in numerous art publications. Originally from Mexico, she lives and works in Miami.

I investigate the themes of recycling and environmental protection through an abstract realistic aesthetic, rooted in Mexican traditions. Drawing from my background in architecture, I explore how used artificial and non-artificial objects relate to urban and natural settings. The resulting landscapes are abstract impressions of real places filtered through the lenses of my emotions. While mainly employing acrylic paint, I experiment with different media and applications to discover new textures and shapes. Appreciating and admiring what surrounds us allows me to transmit my curiosity and desire for exploration through my artistic language; it allows me to create a work of art that conquers the viewer, with my own hands.
